The title of Book 7!
Presenting your Christmas present from Jo Rowling:

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

Thank you, Jo, and Merry Christmas to you and your family!

Analyze the title: Debate and discussion about the title is currently taking place over at our forums - go check it out!

The release date: Find out when we think Book 7 will be released, now that we have a title.

EDIT: Some news outlets are reporting the title as "Deathly Hollows," but this is incorrect. Also, for those of you who hadn't noticed, the title was released yesterday on the winter solstice. Recall in OOTP: "...at the solstice will come a new... and none will come after..." At the winter solstice, a new title will be revealed, but as this is the last book, no more will be released.

Including 'death' in the title sounds like a very ominous move for me... Not auspicious in feng shui.

Posted by viaaurelia1310 Dec 21st 2006

Deathly Hallows are of course the Horcruxes. A hallow is a holy or sacred item. Deathly.. well, we saw what happened to Dumbledore after handling a Horcrux... and isn't book 7 about finding and destroying the horcruxes and then voldemort? I think that's what the title means: Horcruxes.

Posted by hpfan112 Dec 21st 2006

Can anyone please tell me what the word Hallow means? I've never heard of it... I searched the dictionary but I couldnât find it⦠Now that the title released, I believe that the book will be released in 2007!!!!

Posted by BaybeeBethy Dec 21st 2006

HOLY NACARONI GREATEST THING THATS HAPPENED TO ME ALL YEAR OH MY GOD OH MY GOD OH MY GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by jennibee Dec 21st 2006

hal·low 1. to make holy; sanctify; consecrate. 2. to honor as holy; consider sacred; venerate: to hallow a battlefield. So, deathly holy things? Interesting... If what happened with HBP is an inclination, this book will come out next Christmas, probably this this summer.

Posted by priyananda Dec 21st 2006

Hallow (v. t.) To make holy; to set apart for holy or religious use; to consecrate; to treat or keep as sacred; to reverence.

I am hyperventilating so bad it is ridiculous. I'd better not die just when we get the title of the next book! But I do love it, I really really do!!

Posted by DnlW Dec 21st 2006

I like Harry Potter and the Parsel Tongue Trophy better. I think this title is weak.

Think of all the people that will come on this site later today and discover this amazing news, I'm expecting a hell of a lot of comments about this!

Posted by HalfBloodProphet Dec 21st 2006

Its a weird title. Sounds a little too melodramatic for Jo. Didn't she say it wasn't going to be anything like "The Temple of Doom" or whatever? And I just checked the UK patent office's website and all they have is Hallows of Hogwarts, and thats withdrawn. but if it is the title, sounds like an interesting book.

Ok let the theorizing begin! A hallow is by general assumption a saint or a holy figure, hence halloween comes from all hallows eve´, meaning all saints eve. Now a saint is a very religious figure which makes me doubt that JKR would go that way, she usually stays away from any kind of religious references. The other possible meaning for hallow is ghost, which makes a lot more sense since we know that ghosts may have a larger role in book 7. I liked the idea someone mentioned before that harry would have to go to some kind to underworld like in most of the great heroes journey kind of stories. OOOhhhh ... other theories please, or other definitions for hallow would be nice, yay im so excited!!!!!!

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows? How odd. I think I liked Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince better but I am sure it will grow on me. At the moment however, I rather think that "deathly" is a rather corny word to be in a title. I think "deadly" might have even been better... I wonder if she will revels what the other two titles she was thinking about were. I think that would be nice, but If she does I hope she waits until after Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is out so that we do sit around saying how much better one of the other titles would be and that we hope she changes it ... Oh well, I think it is growing on me....

Posted by Luke Dec 21st 2006

I'm unsure of it to be honest. But, I'm soooo glad. I gasped when I saw the news post. Thanks for the speedy delivery. Once again Happy Holidays. I'm off to search what a hallow is.

Posted by _mugglecast_ Dec 21st 2006

PS/SS CoS PoA GoF OotP HBP DH Hmmm. That's cool. The first and last books are the only ones with 2 letter abbreviations...

Posted by BaybeeBethy Dec 21st 2006

Can't type... screaming... going mad.... I can't believe we know the title! Think how mad we will all be when it's actually released. We might get arrested for going too mad.

Posted by ospreypatronus Dec 21st 2006

You know what's funny? I was actually DISAPPOINTED that there wasn't another WOMBAT. How dense am I? *shakes head* Just like challenges, I guess. It's time to do the title dance! *dances* Meh. Forget dancing. *sits down in a corner and contemplates title* For the record, a 'hallow' is a holy (set apart, special) place or thing. Seems like good old Voldie's horcrux hiding places to me. But let the speculation continue!

Posted by blastedgoose Dec 21st 2006

im not loving the title right now, but that's probably just cuz it needs some getting used to--i really didn't like half-bloof prince at first. actually, the more i say it, deathly hallows sounds less and less awkward. dealthy hallows...maybe i shud keep on saying it until it feels right :P

Posted by iwishiwashermione Dec 21st 2006

awesome, what a great christmas present!

Posted by Pixiestx Dec 21st 2006

Yes!!! A title Whoo hooo! Happy Holidays to us! But now, I think with a title like that, Harrys death would be too predictable.... I mean it does have death in the title. Thanks JO!!!!

Posted by browncoat Dec 21st 2006

Oh nevermind, I heard what the voice said, now. "Hello..hello...is anyone there?" I wonder who the voice belongs to? >_>

Posted by jennibee Dec 21st 2006

That's Jo's voice! It's been on there for a long while though, pretty much since the website was first developed!

Posted by Lynn Dec 21st 2006

What kind of STUPID title is that I thought it was a joke *sigh*

Posted by ChoChang Dec 21st 2006

Micah! I will snog you when I see you! UGH! JK! I LOVE YOU

Posted by bookworm1991 Dec 21st 2006

Someone asked for the definitions of Deathly and Hallows. Here is what I could find.... Deathlyâ (1) resembling death or somebody who is dead as in âA deathly pallorâ, or (2) high in degree or intensity as in âa deathly hushâ Hallowsâ (1)To make or set apart as holy, or (2) To respect or honor greatly; revere

PS, COS, POA, GOF, OOTP, HBP, DH love it!!!! I can't wait to hold that book in my hands!

Posted by Greta_Prewett Dec 21st 2006

If she let us know the name of the last book it will definitely come out next year! Like HBP! OMG YAY! that's ooo cool. Since I've heard Bloomsbury's board meets for the next year just before Christmas every year maybe it's a sign that the book will come out in 2007! This is so cool! My early Christmas present ! Oh yay!

Posted by Juze Dec 21st 2006

Oh my God! A title! Whoa! Micah Tan the Anchor Man gets results!!! I can't believe we have a title finally (albeit kind of a creepy one, but still!!)

Posted by hp_bookworm Dec 21st 2006

FOR ALL OF THOSE PEOPLE THAT THINKS THE TITLE SUCKS I THINK IT IS THE BEST TITLE SHE COULD HAVE GIVEN BOOK 7. AND IT'S CERTAINLY BUILDING UP A LOT OF EXCITEMENT :D :D :D IM SO GLAD I DECIDED TO CHECK MUGGLENET BEFORE I WENT TO BED. THE ONLY PROBLEM IS, NOW I WON'R BE ABLE TO SLEEP :P

Posted by Cess Dec 21st 2006

So deathly is not something that can cause dead, but something that IS dead or resembles death ...hmmmm... that's interesting...

Posted by HMWogglebugTE Dec 21st 2006

Revealed on the winter Solstice no less. "...at the Solstice will come a new..." Book title? "...and none will come after..." How true.

Posted by Gryffindor_Pureblood Dec 21st 2006

THIS IS GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sounds like a June or July Release again WOOO HOOO!!!!! if so it is going to be a busy!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by zeddy Dec 21st 2006

Well, I rather like the title; I think perhaps some people are a little disappointed becuase we build it up for sooo long then anything that comes out is like an anti-climax. Still I think it's a grower and anyway as we don't really know what the story is about yet, how can we judge is the title's a good one or not? Regarding what it might be about, do you remember when HBP came out - lots of people (not me included) realised it was Snape straight away; although I think that might have been more when the front cover came out. Still, maybe the meaning of this title, is quite obvious too. Maybe the deathly hallows are the horcrux's? Becuase as a hallow is something holy or revered as holy, surely the horcrux's are like this to Voldie? Also deathly, becuase we think that they would kill you, if you think about what happened to Dumbledore's hand...

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH BEST CHRISTMAS PRESENT EVER

Posted by dreamin Dec 21st 2006

OMG OMG OMG OMG!!!!! Couldn't be a better time to make a first post here!!!! I'm so excited, but now i just want to know WHEN!!!!! Anybody else wondering if there is a significance to us having to play hangman to get the name????

Posted by tonksrocksmysocks Dec 21st 2006

Not too sure about it...doesn't sound like a tile...thought it was a joke at first... It is growing on me a bit though..and because of the door it could be true..Damm you Jo, you've manage to compleatly confuzzle a fan here.

Posted by jennibee Dec 21st 2006

No, it doesn't sound like a June or July release. She announced the title of HBP in June of 2004 and it was released in July of 2005. She announced the release date around Christmastime 2005 as well, and the date was more than 6 months later. So, we've still got a while, unless she really rushes it. I would rather it come out next November, spread out the Potter-mania next summer.
