The title of Book 7!
Presenting your Christmas present from Jo Rowling:

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

Thank you, Jo, and Merry Christmas to you and your family!

Analyze the title: Debate and discussion about the title is currently taking place over at our forums - go check it out!

The release date: Find out when we think Book 7 will be released, now that we have a title.

EDIT: Some news outlets are reporting the title as "Deathly Hollows," but this is incorrect. Also, for those of you who hadn't noticed, the title was released yesterday on the winter solstice. Recall in OOTP: "...at the solstice will come a new... and none will come after..." At the winter solstice, a new title will be revealed, but as this is the last book, no more will be released.

merry christmas, jk! how are we ever going to repay you for such a great present?? i have a question: does "hallows" refer to arthurian legend of the four items: sword, cup (the grail), platter and spear" and is it related to the horcruxes?? i have to know!!! it's so friggin exciting! but it's gonna be forever before the book comes out!! merry christmas again! to all hp fanatics!!

For those of you who dislike the title because it's hard to say or doesn't role off the tongue, consider this: Shakespeare, when he wanted the actors in his plays to say something slowly, would write the words so they had to say it slowly or they would mess up the dialogue. Maybe JKR intended the title to be said with a slow emphasis. It does sound creepy that way. Try it; say the title very slowly emphasising the first 'D' and the 'Hal' of Hallows. I think the title is juicy. :-)

I can't believe I didn't make the connection of the solstice thing and the release. I've been trying to figure out what that meant ever since I read it and it's seems so obvious now. *bangs head* Good job Jo, you are still the trickiest author ever.

Okay, after a whole day to stop hyperventalating and going absolutely crazy and screaming etc, I can actually think for a minute. I wen't to bed last night thinking about what it could mean and everything, but I just couldn't get over the fact that this is it. It's nearly the end. It's not yet though, we've still got the bit we've all been waiting for to go. Deathly Hallows ( I was so about to type Book 7 then, I'm still not used to it!). But when this is over, what then? Yeash, there's the movie's, but I still will be craving more books about Harry than movies. I'll be crying so much when I've read it. I've been thinking whether to read it quickly, within a day, like I usually do, or to spread it out over a week or something, to make my last chance of reading a new Harry adventure as long as I can. But knowing me, I won't be able to stop reading... but that's the sign of a good book! I can't wait for this book! I f I could just know when it's out, why, I'd be over the moon. We'd be all set and ready to read then. And when you think about it, would you rather have the book in your hands now, like most of us think we wan't, or would you not rather wait and go crazy in your excitement for the book. The wait can sometimes be better than the experiance. But I sure hope it comes soon!

OMG about the solstice thing! JKR is so clever!

I bet you ARE Jen....

Ah yes, St. Mungo's is next in my weirdo anagram story. Well, see... Harry and McGonagall are ghosts! They were very afraid of dying (Harry had Voldy to vanquish and McGonagall-y had a life to live!) so of course, it's the most likely thing to happen. Luna came back too, and constantly is shouting, "But Harry, I'm an orphan *too*!" at him and trying to get together with him... all while they're haunting the halls of St. Mungo's. So, eventually St. Mungo's shuts down, and pretty soon only Voldy is left. What is he to do? And what happens with the rest of the Wizarding world? (Anagram = death to Harry and sly hallow, the terp.)

I didn't realize that the title meant that! Thanks so much, this has to be one of the top christmas presents! Oh god next year will be harry potterless. sad. THANK YOU J.K. ROWLING!!!!!!

Posted by bwof Dec 22nd 2006

*yawns*...yeah, yeah. I just want some more mindblowing news. * looks up in bewilderment*, I can´t believe how greedy i am- to get this title was the best Christmas GIFT......! Thanks a million to Jo!

Posted by beccabear747 Dec 22nd 2006

BaybeeBethy, i completely agree. i will be crying befoe i even read it. every f seconds it will be "THAT'S THE LAST TIME I WILL READ THE 5TH WORD OF CHAPTER 3 IN A HARRY POTTER BOOK FOR THE FIRST TIME!!!!!!" lol. i honestly hope she doesn't give us closure on everything so we will always have something to discuss. and what's-his-face up there telling us not to freak out: you obviously don't understand us so don't even try. i've found better friends through Harry Potter than i have in real life and i am forever greatful for that. When the story finally ends we WILL go on and love these books forever. There is not another like them and there never will be. Love you Jo!

Posted by christianaeg Dec 22nd 2006

i agree people.. This is the end. the end of all things for me. But not quite. There's a few months left to enjoy it.. drink up the books looking for foreshadowing and all that jazz. Every day i think the clock's ticking... so i say PARTY WHILE WE STILL CAN!!! lol

Posted by Soras_Best_Buddy Dec 22nd 2006

Exciting yet depressing. Exciting in the way of "we have a piece of information that we've been waiting ages for". Depressing in the way of "Every bit of information we get means one step closer to never again experiencing the anxiety of waiting for the next Harry Potter book". ^_^ / ~_~

Posted by ShilohBailey Dec 22nd 2006

JKR is the cleverest person to the walk the earth... at the solstice will come anew and none will come after.. there is our answer for the release date of DH =) at the solstice, the sun is dirrectly overhead at noon, and it appears to stand in the sky..... maybe you can only make a horcrux at this time!!!!!! when the sun is still...... it must have something to do with the planets room in the DOM!!!!!!!

Posted by grlivinlife Dec 22nd 2006

are you guys serious?? i dont really think its as interesting and intriguing as the other titles im happy and all...but c'mon.... its not as goood as the rest of them

Posted by Ljh Dec 22nd 2006

does anyone know where that quote is from?

Posted by Hermione_Granger090894 Dec 22nd 2006

OH MY GOD!!!! I CAN'T CALM DOWN!!!I'M SO HAPPY!! THANK YOU JKR!!!

Posted by moonyrocks Dec 22nd 2006

i like the idea that the deathly hallows is a synonym for horcruxes my mind is racing now. but i liked the idea of it having to do something with halloween

Posted by AlyGranger Dec 22nd 2006

All Hallows Eve. Halloween! This could be a referal to the night harry's parents were killed. Or, this could mean Deathly spirits.... of dead people or from behind the veil????

it would be really cool in the next time she opens her door, along with the release date, we would find out the two other titles she had been speculating. That would give us a lot more information than chapter titles, in my opinion.

Posted by personyperson Dec 22nd 2006

yay! hallowed, hallow, dictionary.com says holy, revered, etc. interesting. hmmmm. is it godric hollow or hallow?????????????//

Posted by hpgirl953 Dec 22nd 2006

I have a questioon? Will mugglenet keep going though the series ic coming to an end?

Posted by Dusty_d69 Dec 22nd 2006

I agree with what someone said on one of the first pages. The title will have to grow on me, I think. It just doesn't seem to click like the others did. But I'm sure it will be awesome!!!

Posted by dancemama073 Dec 22nd 2006

just as a side thought... in a way, I don't like that the title, when said out loud, doesn't have the same ring as the other titles, HBP, CoS, PoA.. those had three words to say and Deathly Hollows sounds somewhat cut off or short.. I still love the title..

Posted by Slorf Dec 22nd 2006

deathly hAllows! And 'Philosophers Stone' are two words, if you ask me...

Posted by performingmonkey Dec 22nd 2006

IMO this means Harry, without a doubt, will SURVIVE. If he dies everyone will be like 'yeah yeah, it's obvious he's going to die seeing as JKR put "Death" in the title!' that's why it's not going to happen. The title either means a place/places (e.g. Hogwarts cemetery), an item/items(i.e. Horcruxes), a person/people(e.g. the Hogwarts founders). Whatever, I LIKE the title! It's excellent. I don't CARE if it doesn't 'flow' as well as some of the others. I can just imagine the movie voice guy saying 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows!' and it sounding dramatic.

Posted by basicblack Dec 22nd 2006

the arch in the ministry where sirus died that is nothing but a death chamber. i dont think it has anything to do with the title. also the second mirror will come in to play prob by harry going to grimmauld place and seeing it there. harry has already said that he aint going to go to his seventh year at hogwarts. hogwarts may play a small role thats it. as far as i know there is no mention of a graveyard in or near the school if so then someone please tell me. i still maintain that deathly hallows has to do with lv hide out. harrys adventure will no doubt start in godrics hollow cause to him thats where it all started. i have also read on an edit part of mugglenet that it isnt the real title. only time will tell it would be cool if the last book came out in a few months.

Posted by HogsmeadeGirl111 Dec 22nd 2006

Ehh...definitely my least favorite title out of all the HP books. It's very cliche - the deathly hallows. The other titles were much more vague, which I have to admit, added to the excitement of the new book. But still, that's an awesome Christmas present =)

Posted by sabrina250 Dec 22nd 2006

OMG OMG OMG!!!!!! the best Xmas present ever!!!! i'm sooooooo excited yeah!!!!! i luv it "Deathly Hallows" OMG i have to calm down lol :D

Posted by lalala Dec 22nd 2006

I think that they might just be keeping this at the top of the page so that everyone will see it...? Or are wu just in a news rut? :p :D lol

Posted by hpgirl953 Dec 22nd 2006

yeah i think harry will go back to hogwarts difentitly no arugment there...

Posted by Donkeykongjr Dec 22nd 2006

^^^^ I think he will go back to hogwarts but he will be like dumbledoor and leave for weeks at a time searching for horcruxes. Hogwarts will be his safehouse.

Posted by futuremrsradcliffe Dec 22nd 2006

WOW! That title is so unexpected. Maybe Rowling wanted to put a kick in it?

Posted by alien Dec 22nd 2006

deathly hallows superb

this is so awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ! i can't wait to read what's in it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i'm so excited!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by skates Dec 22nd 2006

I just finished watching the "Devil Wears Prada" (awesome movie!!!) anyway, in the movie Andrea(aka Anne Hathaway) was supposed to get her hands on the seventh Harry Potter book or she gets fired. She does get it(never could happen) it was cool. Doesn't make sense though because the book wouldn't even have been finished. It was weird, but cool!!

Posted by siriusisalive Dec 22nd 2006

ive waited to say anything until now. i screamed when i first found out the title at home yesterday. its all so lovely...ironically (deathly not seeming very lovely) I'm not quite sure what to say except--WOW. i was certainly not expecting it!!!! OF course, now the "end" is in sight for all of us. i wonder how active mugglenet will continue to be after the final book and movies are released. it's interesting.

Posted by lilyhpfan23 Dec 22nd 2006

I just reserved my copy at borders!

Posted by Sincerely_S Dec 22nd 2006

OH MY GOD!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by Lprdgecko Dec 22nd 2006

Wow, I am so excited now that we finally know the title! I am a HUGE Harry Potter fan. I've read books 1-5 about 5 times each (no joke) and I'm in the process of reading book 6 for the second time. I have a hunch as to the meaning of the title of book 7 "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows". In one of the Harry Potter books (I can't remember which one), it explains that Harry's parents were killed on Halloween. Halloween is also called "All HALLOWS Eve". My hunch is that the rumored 2 people that die in the book will die on Halloween, in much the same way that Harry's parents died. MAYBE the 2 people that die will be Harry and Voldemort? Who knows?

Posted by iheartmugglecast Dec 22nd 2006

Thought I'd better leave my mark... OMG OMG OMG DEATHLY HALLOWS SQUEEEEEEEEEEE THAT IS SO AMAZING WOW LIKE OMG OMG IM SO HIGH... lol I was high yesterday. OVER IT. But I like the title~!
