The title of Book 7!
Presenting your Christmas present from Jo Rowling:

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

Thank you, Jo, and Merry Christmas to you and your family!

Analyze the title: Debate and discussion about the title is currently taking place over at our forums - go check it out!

The release date: Find out when we think Book 7 will be released, now that we have a title.

EDIT: Some news outlets are reporting the title as "Deathly Hollows," but this is incorrect. Also, for those of you who hadn't noticed, the title was released yesterday on the winter solstice. Recall in OOTP: "...at the solstice will come a new... and none will come after..." At the winter solstice, a new title will be revealed, but as this is the last book, no more will be released.

Fab love it! CANT WAIT! x Merry Christmas everyone!

Posted by Tony_the_Terrible Dec 21st 2006

The title of chapter 1, ps/ss, was "The boy who lived". Wouldn't it be really cool if the last chapter of Deathly Hallows was titled "The boy who lived again"? If I am right, and the final battle occurs in the placed called the Deathly Hallows, Harry must live!

Posted by ickle_diddykins Dec 21st 2006

Yes! Yay! This is fabulous! I wish it would hve came out on Xmas though.

Posted by Sasquatch Dec 21st 2006

OMG! Somebody freeze me until the book comes out. What's the bloody freezing charm again? AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!! FREEEEEEEZE ME!

Posted by bwof Dec 21st 2006

Maybe this means we will get the it sooner than I thought....it feels weird, the last one. Harry Potter and the deathly hallows...so cool of her to release it before christmas....

Posted by lunaluvgood14322 Dec 21st 2006

i agree with silver_shivers! ..... deathly hallow..... do you think it could mean the graveyard in the 4th book? like a hallowed ground where there are dead people? it could be the final battle scene where harry defeats voldemort. because if you remember corectly then the graveyard was in godric's hollow, and thats where harry said he was going to go. very interesting......

Posted by Tony_the_Terrible Dec 21st 2006

...points wand at Sasquatch and says "Stupefy", leaving him stunned and frozen...

Posted by Elisabet Dec 21st 2006

Great christmas present, JKR. I'm shaking :)

Posted by Firebolt_Rider Dec 21st 2006

Merry Christmas Jo! Thank you for the wonderful present! Sorry....I didn't get you anything....

Oh my god [x27895473289] *cries* This is the best Christmas Present ever!!!!

Posted by antlers Dec 21st 2006

that title doesn't seem to flow as well as the others, but regardless, i'm guessing it has to do with All Hallow's Eve and not Godric's Hollow considering they are both two different words. and we already know there's some significance to Halloween in the HP books personally I like this person's idea: "A couple of comments: Hallows are places where spirits are known to dwell, so I wonder if we're going to see Harry, Orpheus-like, going into the Underworld, perhaps to retrieve Sirius? (Maybe, maybe, maybe!)" by MadamPince2 i don't think Sirius is going to be retrieved, however i'm sure Harry will get into contact with him at some point. hopefully. also I think someone mentioned a graveyard of some sort, that's interesting too

HOLY FRICKEN CRAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!! I'M AT SCHOOL RIGHT NOW, AND I JUST CAN'T CONTAIN MY ENTHUSIASM... MY FRIENDS ARE WONDERING WHAT'S GOING ON WITH ME!!!! I LOVE YOU JK!!!!!!!!

Posted by galois Dec 21st 2006

Not that I don't want it sooner, but wouldn't Halloween be a very poetic day for the book to be released? With the Hallows/ All hallow's Eve connection, and with all the events in the books that have happened on Halloween(and the fact that the book and the fifth movie probably will not be out too close together), that's the date I'm hoping for!

Posted by tomatohead Dec 21st 2006

when it says deathly hallows does it mean godrics hollow? or all hallows eve? or both? your killing us here Jo!

Posted by DrSkeeter Dec 21st 2006

Oh my god! I am so nervous. I dont know if I want to know it or keep it a surprise!

Posted by bwof Dec 21st 2006

Pretty good idea galois!! I had been expecting a summer release for a while but maybe that´s too soonn you know?

Posted by Slorf Dec 21st 2006

Don't you people see the difference between an "a" and an "o"?!

Posted by Grub Dec 21st 2006

No wonder it took so long to choose - Rowling was really stuck on which title would be the most ambiguous in meaning without knowledge of what happens in book 7 :)

Posted by knoflookov Dec 21st 2006

This is my best christmas present ever!!! This name is so cool

Posted by keri_potter Dec 21st 2006

ok i did a goole search on the definition for hallows it said... ("holy" or "holy night") the Oct. 31 Greater Sabbat, also called November Eve, the Celtic Samhain ("sow-en"); the beginning of the Celtic winter, and of the Celtic year; the beginning of the Witches' Year, when the Veil Between the Worlds grows thin and the spirits of the dead may return to Earth; the Descent of the Goddess to the Underworld; the final Harvest festival. IM TOTELY THINKING THAT VEIL COMES BACK INTO PLAY AND THE SIRIUS AND OTHERS THAT HAVE PASSED MAY COME BACK TO HELP HARRY. but i think itll just be thier spirits and not actully them. though it would be nice.

Posted by BerthaJorkins Dec 21st 2006

To: gryffindorgirl20 7 I almost started crying (from my excitement) in class. My best friend (Dr.Skeeter) and I are practically shouting our praises to JK! Merry Christmas to everyone!!!!

OH MY GOD!!!!!!! My iinternet wasn't working for a while and I was trying to get on mugglenet and it wouldn't let me! OK I think I am the happiest person right now! I was so stressed about my final today...but forget about that this is HUGE! I LOVE YOU JK!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by Tony_the_Terrible Dec 21st 2006

For all of you who are skeptical about the title, Jo has been writing this book for over a year now, not to mention 6 others before it, so I am sure she knows what she is doing in selecting the perfect title. Afterall, this is to be her masterpiece.

Posted by krazedreamer Dec 21st 2006

YESSSSSSS !!! I wanted to find out the title of the book myself so I did the hangman thing on her site!!! Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows better come soon!!!! :D

Posted by Lunis85 Dec 21st 2006

OH MY GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!! I'M SO FREAKING HAPPY!!!!!!!!!!!! DEATHLY HALLOWS! SOUNDS CREEPY!!!!!!!! It makes me think of deatheaters... AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Could it be Bellatrix... no... NOOOOOOOO!!! SNAPEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!! ! AAAAAAAAAHHHH!!!! so many things that come to mi mind!!!! YAAAAAAAAAAAA AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYY YYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!! >>Hall-ow: vb 1 : CONSECRATE 2 : rever venerate.

Posted by Sparty Dec 21st 2006

I wouldn't put it past Jo to make the Deathly Hallows an actual place (as in name of the place). Think about her past titles, they are never what they seem, and they are very often literal as opposed to figurative. Either way, I'm very much looking forward to the next book! Can't wait!

*SQUEEE!!!!*

Posted by Annie Dec 21st 2006

Ummm... holy crap. I just got on here through one of the library computers during my free period at school and I nearly SCREAMED out loud when I saw this post. Omg. Just the fact that she finally released the title is... omg. *tries to breathe* I actually don't like this title very much :\ It's just so... I dunno, it doesn't seem fit for the last book of the series. It's too depressing. And I thought the title would be something AMAZING, but this just seems so ordinary. Then again, I thought Half-Blood Prince was a crappy title but after reading the book, I realised how amazing it is. Gah. But at least now we have some solid book 7 info! I was having such a bad day, and now I'm freaking on cloud nine.

Posted by Nameless Dec 21st 2006

Deathly Hallows? Takes some getting used to...but...ok. This is how I felt about HBP's title, too, so it's not a big deal. Although I'm a bit scared because the title has death in it and the book will have a lot too... :(

Posted by thelovelylunalovegood Dec 21st 2006

woo! best christmas gift! omg i can't wait

Posted by Jello Dec 21st 2006

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!! This made my day. I love you, Jo Rowling!!!!!!!

Posted by bwof Dec 21st 2006

The release date, I wonder if she knows it already? what do y´all think???

Posted by mrrix32 Dec 21st 2006

Someone needs to update WIKIPEDIA! DO IT NOW!!!!!!! Merry Christmas :-)

Posted by virgombchick Dec 21st 2006

That title stinks...I don't like it at all. I'm still excited for the book but that just...idk...I think I liked referring to it as "Book 7" more than I'm going to like referring to it as "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows"...

Posted by JC_Cainstone Dec 21st 2006

Oooooh, how exciting! But she never said it was the title!! It could be anything, it could be a code within a code, it could be a forwarning. Or it could be me being over-paranoid :P Ah well, will just have to wait, all shall be revealed soon, I'm sure. Happy Christmas, all!

Posted by H2theP Dec 21st 2006

Yeahhhhhh! OMG what could the "Deathly Hallows" mean? So excited! Can't wait for the release date!!

Posted by Ruth Dec 21st 2006

I typed define:hallows into google this is what it said ("holy" or "holy night") the Oct. 31 Greater Sabbat, also called November Eve, the Celtic Samhain ("sow-en"); the beginning of the Celtic winter, and of the Celtic year; the beginning of the Witches' Year, when the Veil Between the Worlds grows thin and the spirits of the dead may return to Earth; the Descent of the Goddess to the Underworld; the final Harvest festival three words OH MY GOD

Posted by scarlet_and_gold Dec 21st 2006

wow, this is the first book that reveals how dark the series has become in the title. i think that is very telling as to what the book will contain, but whatever happens, i trust jo to give us a good story, and a great close to the series.

Wow. I don't think it makes a whole lot of sense (Deathly Hallows?) but it's awesome knowing! This is the best day home sick from school ever! What a Christmas present! Thanks Jo! Kate-Lynne

Posted by Smartie439 Dec 21st 2006

Oh My Goodness! I'm soooo excited!!! Now I don't need anything else for Christmas!!!! Thanks J.K.!!! Can't wait for the book!!!!

Posted by PokeyPeeves Dec 21st 2006

I'm so excited she gave us the title....it seems a bit....odd though....I wonder what the hallows are...a place maybe? Maybe the hallows is the place where the final battle happens?

Posted by Trelawneys_Fan Dec 21st 2006

It's cool, but I'm a little dissappointed, to be honest. I expected a cooler title, like 'Half Blood Prince'. It doesn't matter, anyway. All I want is the book!!! PS. What the FCK are "Hallows"?

Posted by sarah_harry_dearest Dec 21st 2006

i'm like sooooooooooooooooo excited!!! i dont think i can sleep tonight.. hahaha.. might just finish reading HBP again for the night..

Posted by BooksGamesMoviesMusic2 Dec 21st 2006

Oh, wow, I'm so excited!

Posted by Miss_Weasley23 Dec 21st 2006

OMG! OMG! OMG! When iI saw it I started to scream! Yeah! Great title!

Posted by icedbluetiger Dec 21st 2006

OMG, just heard them say on the radio, but turned it off fast so i could read it first here. Hallows means spirits doesnt it? so 'Evil Spirits'? I think it's a great title, fitting for the final book methinks.

Posted by keri_potter Dec 21st 2006

actually ICEDBLUETIGER, hallows is another word for saints.
