Staunton: tragedy at the heart of OOTP
Imelda Staunton (Umbridge) spoke recently about her experience playing the former High Inquisitor:

"Dolores is a vision in pink taffeta but a nasty piece of work. At first I thought, 'Ooh, a Harry Potter, that'll be fun'. But at the film's heart is real tragedy, and I found myself having four months of intense acting, followed by occasional wand-waving for the next six."

Yay! Top 10! Oh, can't wait for OotP! I think she'll be a good umbridge.

Posted by Celebwen Jan 15th 2007

Oh she seems like she really understands her part! I'm so excited to see her do Umbridge, she just seems so perfect!! I'm glad to hear that she takes the movie very seriously.

Posted by Jimbledore Jan 15th 2007

cant wait for the movie. she is the perfect choice! wonderful actress! Bravo!

Posted by Gotpotter269 Jan 15th 2007

have a cry party

Posted by SiriusEqualsLuv Jan 15th 2007

Wow...... I wonder if she meant she wasn't happy while filming or that she didnt realize that hp isn't just a kid's book. Hopefully the latter.

Posted by Micino Jan 15th 2007

So true, OOTP is a the most tradgic in the book series

Posted by potterlovver814 Jan 15th 2007

Ahaha... a real tragedy. She doesn't sound like she's enjoying the part though, because she mentions that Harry Potter was going to be a fun experience and then she mentions that she had to act for 4 months and then do wand stuff for another 6. Not exactly proof that she had a good time acting for the movie. Whatever. She'll be a great Umbridge though, from what it looks like in the trailers. I'm SOOOO excited!

Posted by SiriuslyHP Jan 15th 2007

i agree that she will be a great umbridge. anyhow, i think what she means is that she came into the movies thinking, "wow harry potter is all magical and fun kiddy stuff" but after filming it realized that a lot of work goes into it and harry potter definitely is not just a kid movie: at the heart of it there is real tragedy (*cries* Sirius!!) and there is so much more depth to it than just "wow... magic!!"

Posted by DIEVOLDEMORT Jan 15th 2007

Well duuuhhh. Of course its a tragedy!

Posted by Emell Jan 15th 2007

I think its kind of a poetic justice, that Imelda has to work a little harder and suffer a little more. dont you? anyway I hope they portray her as the evil witch that she is in the book, otherwise I'd be a bit disappointed,,,,

Posted by bwof Jan 15th 2007

Yeah it is not exactly a comedy when a person dies, is it now?! And terrific if she at last has understood that Potter is not just a story for children! Hope she had somewhat a nice time though cause to me she didn´t sound too cheerful.

Posted by Regulus_Black Jan 15th 2007

is that a hint of sarcasm i detect in her voice? She doesn't sound impressed with the 'occasional wand waving for the next six [months]' Still, she looks good on the trailor.

Posted by Regulus_Black Jan 15th 2007

also, darn right there;s a tragedy!!! SSIIRRIIUUSS!!!!! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!! why did JK do that?!?!?!? Sirius was......wow. he cant be dead! i'm still not over it...

Posted by H2theP Jan 15th 2007

I think most of yall are over examining what she said. She didn't say she didn't like OotP; it just wasn't what she was expecting. I think she'll be a great Umbridge and I can't wait to see the movie.

Posted by Nimue Jan 15th 2007

"A vision in pink taffeta, but a nasty piece of work" - Spot on, Mrs. Stauton. I'm now feeling nicely optimistic about Umbridge.

Posted by SiriusBlackIS4ever Jan 15th 2007

haha im not over Sirius yet ethier....hes my favorite character...he'll come back....umbridge is gonna be great...YEAH...i can't wait for OOTP

Posted by ilovechocolate Jan 15th 2007

oh boo hoo! She should be honoured to have landed a role in the movie!

Posted by Witchy_Woman Jan 15th 2007

Yeah, Imelda is pretty cool. She was freaking HIL-ARIOUS in Sense and Sensibility. She played this really annoying talkative woman and Hugh Laurie played her husband who could not stand her.

Posted by DecemberDrops Jan 15th 2007

It definitely has a far, far more serious tone than the previous books.

Posted by Crookshanks93 Jan 15th 2007

3 cheers for captain obvious! it is tradgic! anyway... she sounds the part, looks the part... even if her attitude sounds... umbridgeish

Posted by LemonDrops Jan 15th 2007

i agree ootp is probly one of the most tradgic (out of 1-5) but the 6th is tradgic too...but i think she will be a good umbridge...in my opinion she does sound think the umbridge in the book like crook said.

Posted by LemonDrops Jan 15th 2007

think to like and coma after book* lol...

Posted by hpyayi Jan 15th 2007

is it me or does anyone else think that we need a new trailer or some new pics and footage??

Posted by DDudeDerek Jan 15th 2007

I think she will be a great Umbridge, but I have a problem with her attitude. She seems like she doesn't care for the positon. Seems weird to me.

Posted by AnimalLover Jan 15th 2007

Don't like tragedy as much. This film's gonna be so different compared to the first and second, where everything's all a exciting fun adventure. The movies gets less and less a kid's movie every year. I sure hope, this one dosn't end up like the 4th one. GoF was a good movie, but they had to cut so much. 200 page book into 2.5 hour movie is okay, 600 page book isn't meant to fit into 2.5 hour movie and still end up close to the book. now with 776 pages, i'm not sure how that's gonna work out

Posted by Belsito Jan 16th 2007

Well, book 5 was a lot different to its predecessors. I remember thinking, after ready the first few chapters, that I would have been willing to believe that another author other than JK had written it. Even the style of the writing had changed. They did leave out a lot from GOF but I think the main theme of the book was very well portrayed and I enjoyed it (if you want to complain about any of them it should be POA which was completely hi-jacked). I disagree that she doesn't seem to be very enthusiastic about the role. She went in thinking that it would be a bit of fun in a children's film and found it to be much more serious than that - especially since her character is the one who is dishing out all the misery and abuse. It is the common feeling of adults entering the HP world - I remember not wanting to buy the books for my then eleven-year-old son because I felt that he was too mature a reader to bother with kiddies stories about witches and wizards. And here I am five years later catching a few minutes of Mugglenet before I drive off to work! It completely won me over as it does any adult who bothers to pick up one of the books!

Posted by megblack89 Jan 16th 2007

I think too many adults underestimate the depth and maturity of the harry potter series and the characters. It seems cliche that because so many kids and teens like them, they are not suitable to a wider and older audience, hence the reason adult covers came out...to prove that they are read by adults, and spare some older generations the so called "embarrasment" of reading 'childrens books' -- this is speaking very generally of adults, I know there are millions who love the books, but its very true, especially of these actors who are coming in with various expectations, or complete lack of knowledge on the series. (Not Jason/Lucius for example.) Makes you appreciate those who are genuine fans! They can always do a better job! Go them :)

Posted by lil_kitty22 Jan 16th 2007

yes..she really is evil...but i heard that she should be a great actress for dolores

Posted by Emell Jan 16th 2007

What's a pound sterling worth? compared to the US dollar,,

Posted by Silverswan Jan 16th 2007

Yet another actor who doesn't know Harry Potter. "I found myself having four months of intense acting". Apparently she thought she could get away with poor acting. Lol.

Posted by Ronaldweasley Jan 16th 2007

come on be happy atleast u where in one of the Harry Potter movies.....

Posted by my_ceddyteddy Jan 17th 2007

Does this mean she didnt enjoy the acting in HP?

Posted by harrypotteraddict Jan 17th 2007

She's going to be a great Umbridge... she's got to come back for the DH movie because Umbridge is going to come back. When I was reading OOTP I was thinking to myself "Imelda Staunton would be great for Umbridge." And here she is! You rock, Imelda!

Posted by hp323232 Jan 17th 2007

neatooooo.

Posted by wingardium_leviosa_7 Jan 22nd 2007

ok i know this is a super late comment, but I do think that she should be happy she got into an HP movie. And she really does need to get that HP is much more than a child's story...

Posted by SomebodyElse Jan 25th 2007

wingardium_leviosa: You're exactly right!!!! Harry Potter has depth and meaning, as much as LotR does, (no matter what the Wall of Shame says--I did enjoy LotR, though) and it concerns kids but that doesn't make it a kids' book. OotP especially is a pretty dark novel, and very complex. It's my favorite one so far, and I'm crossing my fingers that the movie is just as good. Emma Thompson and Imelda Staunton know each other?????? That's interesting considering Umbridge and Trelawney hate each others' guts.
