Laura Mallory to appeal yet again
Laura Mallory, the mother who has been crusading since August 2005 to remove the Potter books from the County's school libraries, is set to appeal to the County's Superior Court the decision Georgia state made in December to keep the books on shelves.

Mallory said, "We will take a stand for truth, and pray God will touch the hearts of this generation." For the past year and a half, she has vehemently preached that the books indoctrinate children in witchcraft. She hasn't, however, actually read the books.

Mallory says she is poised to take legal action and has apparently received "significant donations" from "supporters" in aid of this.

Emerson's Comment: Ever seen a fly crash itself repeatedly into a transparent pane of glass, never quite getting the hint? Yeah.

Enough with the whole me and Timothy thing already. Just drop it. He's always going to hate me, and I'm always going to hate him.

OMG! She's joking, right??

Posted by AnyaMarcos Jan 23rd 2007

Sadly not, Crazy. She's completely serious. And she has been for going on 2 years now. The horse is beyond dead, the horse is compost.

An open comment to Laura Mallory: Since your crusade has gone beyond doing what you feel is right and has now turned into an obvious lust for publicity, I believe you just might be reading this right now. After all, it wouldn't exactly hurt your cause if you were able to quote some of the comments on here and other websites just to make yourself out to be some kind of martyr, would it? Well, I have one last thing to say to you: no one is going to listen to you because you are uninformed. If you want to fight the Harry Potter books, you'd better read at least the first one. If you are unwilling(afraid?) to do this, your best bet is to just be quiet and go back home.

I have already commented once on this story, but after reading all the comments since then, I feel compelled to comment again. Harry Potter, whether for good or evil, is a piece of literature that models the values and culture of an age. As such, it stands with Steinbeck's "Grapes of Wrath" and Adam Smith's "Wealth of Nations". As a lit. buff, I'm against censorship in general because literature allows us to view and weigh other peoples' ideas and systems of belief against our own, allowing us to question the reason we believe certain ideas and not others. Close-mindedness and self-inflicted ignorance are perhaps two of the greatest crimes a person can commit against themselves. That being said, as a history major at a Christian college, I can honestly affirm that banning anything did nothing to stop it. The Romans tried it with the Bible and all they did was spread it.

Spot on, Emerson! Spot on...

Y'know.. She JUST might be right.. The other day, I was reading one of the Star Wars books..and the next thing I know, I couldn't fight the compulsion to move Tie-Fighters out of mud with my mind, choke my subordinates from several feet away, and destroy imperial robots with a lightsaber.. THEN I read Alice In Wonderland, and suddenly found myself inches tall, and talking to an invisible cat, and a giant talking centipede.. And thats WITHOUT even taking a toke off of his bong.. And FINALLY I read the Bible (New and Old testament)- And I just couldn't stop myself from causing a 40 day and night flood, whipping out the 10 plagues (multiple times), turning water to wine, parting the biggest seas and oceans I can find (and leaving them that way..), and impregnating women with messiahs without ever touching them (Heh..I gave Maddonna and Angelina Jolie triplets..they don't need to adopt any more children now!) Yup..Let's not read any of these books that have magic in them, they can corrupt us all!

Fragger, it was an X-Wing stuck in the mud, not a Tie-fighter. :-) Geeks unite!

Can we send her children copies of the books? I think they would love them. I really feel sorry for the librarians that have to DEAL with her. She's made them famous. They have received all sorts of rewards from the American Library Association because they haven't killed her yet. Can Laura Mallory be put on the Wall of Shame?

Posted by Ithilwen Jan 24th 2007

I laughed hysterically when I saw this. Because it's so pointless. Emerson has it right. There's not much else I can say 'cause everyone else has said it so well!

Posted by iceball19 Jan 24th 2007

Ugh, I wish that mother would just read the Harry Potter books and give them a chance! They are fiction! She mind as well be agains Cinderella cuz their's a fairy godmother with a, 'OH NO' wand! sheesh

Posted by SomebodyElse Jan 25th 2007

Let's go bother Laura Mallory! :-) Bother, bother, bother, bother . . .

Posted by SomebodyElse Jan 25th 2007

On a more serious note: a) Why does she think that the books are against God? They're not, they're really not. It's got magic, sure, but there's a different between fictional magic, used as a plot device, then consulting Satan. I mean, Lily sacrifices herself, and Harry doesn't die even though technically he should have because he was AK'd. What does this remind us of? -- In Christianity, Jesus dies to save people from Hell. Wow . . . b) Please, please, PLEASE don't judge all Christians or Christian evangelicals by the way some behave. I'm Catholic and I don't care what the person sitting next to me in science is reading. c) Think about the stuff Dumbledore says: "Death is but the next great adventure", "It is our abilities, more than our choices, Harry, that define who we really are", and his advice to be kind to Kreacher even though he doesn't deserve it. (This is paraphrased). Doesn't this sound a lot like how God wants us to behave? d) All that theology aside, banning the books is a violation of both the First Amendment and the separation of church and state.

Posted by SomebodyElse Jan 25th 2007

Oh, and one more thing: Laura, if you want to continue to argue against the books, (as is your right), try reading them. You might be able to argue more knowledgeably. Or realize there's nothing to argue about.

I live in Georgia and I'm completely ashamed to live in the same state as this woman. I'm 21 and I know better than to act like that. She totally needs to grow up a bit. Her throwing this hissy fit isn't going to change the HP books being in libraries, not even school libraries. All she needs to do is teach her kids NOT to read the books and if they do then that's her fault, not anyone else's. All she's doing through this is making other people's lives frustrating. She's becoming an annoyance...

Posted by Glitterbug Jan 26th 2007

Oh, dear God, never let this woman quit. She has provided the BEST entertainment. Emerson- nice one ;)

It's sad to think that law/appeal systems are being misused in this way. Not to mention tax-payers money. What I don't understand is how anyone in authority can agree to hear an arguement against a subject that has not been thoroughly researched by the complainee? She should be ordered to read the books or listen to the cd's, take a written test to show she knows the content and then put together a convincing argument (which she will find, having researched, that she can't). It's her children I feel sorry for. I hope they aren't getting picked on or bullied by this whole sad affair. People are entitled to have opinions but they need to think about how much they hurt others with them. Surely she must be hurting her children with this. She thinks she is protecting them but the best way to do that is to not have the books in the house, if that is her worry. Not masquerade all over the world as this 'do-gooder' against 'evil'. She's also hurting faiths and religions which may be judged by her behaviour. I hope not. I'm not a believer myself in anything other than Mother Nature and I am mature enough to know that this is one idiot, but there are others out there who will 'tar with the same brush'. Get to a doctor Laura and get help. You've gone way past what is healthy and true.

(sigh) Reason seems to have less of a place than ever in society nowadays.

Posted by Queenmab Jan 26th 2007

What true Christian would want to take away something that makes children everywhere happy? Did this woman even have a childhood? (To use an altered version af a Draco Malfoy quote( "If hearts were made of gold, Laura Mallory would be poorer than the Weasleys!" What a bitter, self-righteous, hag. She makes me sad and disappointed. By taking books away from children, it would appear that this would encourage anti-social behaviour, insofar as, youngsters will have little else to occupy their thoughts from lack of reading adventure, and would most likely find other, less acceptable methods of excercising their imaginations. What could be worse than a child playing an imaginary game of quidditch? Heaven forbid! Perhaps, Ms.Mallory would prefer they hastle he elderly? Ipso facto, she needs to pull her head out, read the books, and perhaps invest in some therapy.

OK Jesus Christ, I am a christian and i luv the harry potter books. they accually teach some very good morals in them and besides i not going to pick up a stick and start killin ppl. dumb b**** ahh well i feel sorry for her kids

Posted by padfoot10369 Jan 26th 2007

Ok, I know this is a little late & and has been said before, but... Lady - you really, really, really need to read these books, before you can pass judgement on anything. I love the HP books and re-read them often. Also I agree with all the statements out there that us parents should be the one deciding what our own kids should be reading - it is not her responsiblity to save everyone - just herself!

Posted by JEngle1122 Jan 26th 2007

Everyone who complains that Mallory should read the books should read the Bible. That way, we're not hippocrits like her. I'm not saying she's right, just a thought.

Posted by SomebodyElse Jan 27th 2007

JEngle1122: Veeeery good point, haven't thought of it that way before. I feel really sorry for her kids, it must really suck for them to have to deal with this whole mess.

Posted by dracomalfoylover Jan 28th 2007

here we go with the god again (yes i do belive in god) were in america or at least she and i are and we have something called freedom of religon. i would seriously like her to name 5 people who have started trying witchcraft as a result to harry potter.she needs to stop shoving god down peoples thoughts who don't want him, read the books so she can see theres nothing wrong with them and they are not teaching witchcraft, and give up because shes never going to win.wow im seriously starting to not like this person.

Posted by GiantSquid Jan 28th 2007

I just read Half-blood Prince for like the 2908th time.. and now I think I might go smoke some weed.. or shoot kids at my school.. or turn against God.. something like that. Geez, what a n00b.. lets pwn her.
