Laura Mallory to appeal yet again
Laura Mallory, the mother who has been crusading since August 2005 to remove the Potter books from the County's school libraries, is set to appeal to the County's Superior Court the decision Georgia state made in December to keep the books on shelves.

Mallory said, "We will take a stand for truth, and pray God will touch the hearts of this generation." For the past year and a half, she has vehemently preached that the books indoctrinate children in witchcraft. She hasn't, however, actually read the books.

Mallory says she is poised to take legal action and has apparently received "significant donations" from "supporters" in aid of this.

God, woman, give it up! Don't you have a life, besides criticizing other people's book choices, which just happens to be their choice! Dude, it's part of our natural rights: we aren't hurting anyone, changing people's religeons, etc. Accpet that you are wrong. People like you bug me to the extreme. Le Corpse

She really needs to find a hobby. Trying to ban books that children love, especially the books that started children reading again, is just dumb. She should be banned from America for wanting this lol.

Posted by unforgivenvampire Jan 18th 2007

Oh, let her do it... It's fun to watch. *sits back with some popcorn and a BIG soda*

Posted by JEngle1122 Jan 18th 2007

I am very disappointed in Ms. Mallory's opinions regarding the Harry Potter books. I am a very devout Christian, (you all would probably call me evangelical), and I think the books are fantastic, not just as literature but also as spiritual teaching. And the bet part about them is that, unlike a lot of Scripture, Harry Potter is readily accessible to kids. I often use Harry Potter to get kids to talk about their feelings and their beliefs. For example, a young child might not understand why Jesus would choose to die, because choosing to die is very counter-instinctive for living creatures. But if they are presented with an example of self-less love that they can relate to (such as between Harry and Lily, or to some extent between Harry and Sirius) then sacrificing yourself for someone you love doesn't seem so far-fetched. So I appeal to you, as intelligent people, please do not judge all evangelical Christians based upon the actions of Ms. Mallory. Not only has she not read the Harry Potter books, but I have sincere doubts as to whether she has read Scripture... because the Bible I read says that we should be know what's going on around us. Because it never pays to be ignorant, and ignorance never brought anyone to Christ (Ms. Mallory, this means YOU).

Posted by irishjeanie Jan 18th 2007

Look at it this way lady....there is finally something that takes the game system controllers out of childrens hands and replaced it with a book. If this woman would read one of the HP books, then she would see that this is a story of good verses evil not a text book on witchcraft. Banning books and book burnings were a method used by the Nazis...Wake upo ad smell the 21st century lady!!

Posted by RavenMist Jan 18th 2007

*facepalm* She will lose again. She will waste money that could be used on something more important. She cannot just go spouting off ignorant statements with out facts and proof. Seeing as she hasn't even read the book, she is just wasting the time of these judges. Her appeal is ridiculous as well, because not everyone is Christian. There are Muslims and Jews, why should it be generalized? Absolutel y ridiculous.

Posted by bwof Jan 18th 2007

Yeah? well, she is such a fcking nutcase! " take no notice of fcking nutcases, they´re soft" - sort of a quote from blood brothers, just a little changed :).

Posted by AnyaMarcos Jan 18th 2007

Ms. Mallory is a famewhore, end of story. She's doing this for her own glory, not to "save" anyone from witchcraft. If she was serious about her case, she would read the books and do proper research, so that she wouldn't be laughed off the stand every time. Since she has NOT made a serious effort to build her case, it is obvious that this is all a ploy to get attention in her sad, lonely, gray life.

Posted by hpwizkid Jan 18th 2007

Ok, we get her point.....does she have to keep reiterating???.....she doesn't have the authority to control what everyone else reads......I pity her children.....

Posted by Smarty_Roxy Jan 18th 2007

TO BE HONEST, I'M GLAD THAT MALLORY'S TRYING TO BAN THEM. NO! HEAR ME OUT, DON'T YOU REMEMBER WHAT OUR DEAR HERMIONE SAID IN OOTP? ''IF SHE COULD'VE DONE ONE THING TO MAKE SURE EVERY SINGLE STUDENT WOULD READ IT, IT WAS BANNING IT!''

Posted by Momof2isHPfan24 Jan 18th 2007

Muggleneters I have posted twice and I have decided to email the news stations and comment my opinion about the matter. I know you'll find it silly but if Mallory can put effort into banning the books I can put mine into showing just how stupid this woman really is. lol So wish me luck that my voice will be heard.

Posted by AnyaMarcos Jan 18th 2007

bwof.... "EDDIE:My mummy says I haven't got to play with you!" "MICKEY:Well my mum says I 'aven't got to play with you, but take no notice of mothers; they're soft!" LOVE that show. Saw it while I was in London years ago.

Posted by eagleboy Jan 18th 2007

Well said JEngle1122!! Well said indeed. I help with the youth in our Southern Baptist Church and since most of them had read HP, I decided to read "Looking for God in Harry Potter". John Granger(coincidence?) does a fantastic job noting various symbols and literary processes that JKR does a fabulous job using. If your interested in the "religion and HP" debate, it's a good resource to use against ignorant people like Ms. Mallory

Posted by The_Library Jan 18th 2007

When I first read the Harry Potter books, I was slightly older than the target age (I read book one at about 13) and I thought they actually showed a pretty good moral example for kids. Now, this lady is showing her children determination, this is true, but she is also teaching them not to tolerate ideas they don't understand, and to persecute those who enjoy things they don't understand. In my mind that is more wrong.

Posted by bwof Jan 18th 2007

@ AnyaMarcos: I´m glad that someone knows what I´m talking about :), yeah it´s a terrific show! And the music and lyrics are brilliant.

Posted by hg06 Jan 18th 2007

Good luck MOMOF2isHPfan24, I hope to hear it on the news sooner or later!!! THanks for telling how we potter fans feel!!! GOOD LUCK again

Posted by Jo_H Jan 18th 2007

A year and a half, huh? Looks like someone doesn't have a life

Posted by BerthaJorkins Jan 18th 2007

She needs to get a life. Really. Has she even read the books? It's called getting to know the opossing team. Stupid. Stupid. Stupid woman.

Posted by BigbearSF Jan 18th 2007

This woman amazes me. I wonder why she doesn't go after Disney for all the witches in their movies and let's not forget Shakespear's witches. I have a feeling she is one of these people who have nothing better to do than watch a film frame by frame looking to things that are not really there.

Posted by AnyaMarcos Jan 18th 2007

She should just read John Granger's book, "Finding God in Harry Potter." It's a brilliant book written by a conservative Christian dad who originally forbade his kids to read the HP books. But then he (unlike Mallory) actually READ the books, and realized they were actually very in-line with Christian teachings.

Posted by TestName Jan 18th 2007

Honestly, I think this has gone beyond the books for her. Her proposal was unanimously shot down last time around, and I can't see that position changing now, different court aside. I think she realizes that, too, yet she continues to fight. IMHO, she's doing this for the attention, and not in the name of her supposed "agenda," because I cannot fathom why else she would continue to struggle to obtain something so TRIVIAL. --------------- ------------------------- ------------------------- ------------- It's. A. Book. If she is honestly pouring her heart and soul into this project, in light of all the people who disagree with her, in light of all of the judges who have told her "no," simply because she cannot "get over" the content of a series of (currently) six novels, then I don't think Harry Potter is her biggest problem. Assuming she's doing this for attention alone is the only way I can see her position in a rational light. :/ --------------------- ------------------------- ------------------------- ------- I don't think determination is a bad thing, but this is just madness.

Posted by PlickaPlicka Jan 18th 2007

Does everybody see two copies of this same news story or is it just me?

Posted by Altoid_storm Jan 18th 2007

Yes, that's right Laura. I"m going to step out of my dorm room right now, into the hallway, wave my magic wand, and STUPEFY YOU!! ... eugh. What a freak.

Posted by xxcrazedpotterfanxx Jan 18th 2007

You have got to be kidding me. Honestly, she hasn't read the books, so therefore she has no case. GIVE IT UP WOMAN!

Posted by Arrow564 Jan 18th 2007

OMG WILL SHE JUST GIVE IT UP ALREDY!!!! The Irratating GIT i hate her!!! READ THE BOOK YOU S.O.B! AND BURN IN HE11!!!!!

Posted by goldensnitch01 Jan 18th 2007

This woman really does give us Georgians a bad name! She needs to just give it a rest and face the fact that Harry Potter rocks and everyone knows it and nobody is going to take the books off of shelves! I can just picture her kids hiding all the books in their rooms somewhere and reading them under the covers with a flashlight at night when their mom is asleep! HAHA!!!

Posted by siriusisalive Jan 18th 2007

What can I possibly say when all you who have posted here have already said it? good job people.

Posted by iwishiwashermione Jan 18th 2007

i totally agree about the "never judge a book by its cover" because she's obviously breaking that "rule"!! if she would just read at least one book she would know that Harry is trying to GET RID of the evil! it's not like when they go to school, professor mcgonagol teaches them to kill chickens and use their blood for some weird rituals! i happen to be a christian and pretty much most of the people at my church are fans of harry potter too. i hope she will learn a lesson and stop wasting other people's time and money with this ridiculous lawsuit. JK Rowling should talk to her too.

Posted by Miss_Weasley23 Jan 18th 2007

Laura please give it up!!! Plese, let the other parents control their kids, and stick to yours.

Posted by WooDaddy Jan 18th 2007

My faith is Christian but I have Read all 6 books at least twice, (I love them) and my 3rd grade son has read them all once. There has never been a time that I thought there was any intention other than entertainment. It's absurd to think otherwise. Jo is an amazing author and I can't wait for Book 7 and Movie 5!!! Barny (the purple dinosaur) on the other hand is clearly evil. :)

Posted by xilovegeorgex Jan 18th 2007

oh give it up woman. and it's called fiction, hun, f-i-c-t-i-o-n. (meanin g not a true story)

Posted by heartnut Jan 18th 2007

I have never been so ashamed of calling myself a Christian Woman. If this is the image that one person projects to the world, it is a sad day indeed. Why is this Child of God protesting something that she has not even *read*? God told us in His Word to use spiritual discernment for determining if something is evil. Has Mrs. Mallory done so? I thought not. Fantasy is never a substitute for the Bible. Fantasy sadly becomes a substitute for the Bible because parents stop parenting their children. I think Mrs. Mallory should stick to tending her own flock, instead of worrying about everyone else's--she has no control over them.

Posted by Vivian Jan 18th 2007

I expect her appeal will be denied, and that will be the end of this nonsense. And the sooner the better.

Posted by alichris77 Jan 18th 2007

Sure you don't want your kids to learn actual witchcraft or devilworship or anything else that will send them down the wrong path. But this is fantasy for goodness sake! No kid can read this book and learn from it how to do an actual spell. And in the book the only people who can do magic are those that are born with magical ability. Also, almost every fairy tale kids are told involves magic, or a fairy god mother, or a wicked witch of some sort. Let's pull all books off the shelves that have even an inkling of magic in them, shall we? We celebrate all kinds of pagan holidays as well like Halloween, and some parts of Christmas (the christmas tree) and Easter (the easter bunny and egg hunts) have pagan symbols in them. So what I want to know is, does Mrs. Mallory put up a Christmas tree? Also, where is her husband in all of this? He must be keeping out of it because he doesn't want to be a part of her nonsense. Maybe this keeps her out of his hair. He needs to step in and speak up for his kids. Meanwhile, are her kids eating healthy? Are they being bullied in school? (probably so after this) Are they experimenting with drugs? Wake up Mrs. Mallory! There are many things that are more important than this. And if her kids want to read Harry Potter, they will find a way to read it. She is making kids want to read it even more because it is "wicked."

The USA is a strange country. Many of the people doing the crusades against something i courts are really disturbed. They would land in a mental asylum or at least get involentary treatment for mental disorders in many countries :-/

Posted by marjer4 Jan 18th 2007

All I have to say is props to you Laura for making the whole world think you're a complete idiot.

Posted by Azazel Jan 18th 2007

Another example of the religious right trying to control our everyday lives. Whether it's this, or trying to ban gay marriage, Christians everywhere are all the same. And for that reason, above all others, I choose not to be one.

Posted by VNelson Jan 18th 2007

OMG this woman is definally off her rocker, when will this crazy a** woman give it a break. this stupid woman hasnt even read the books and yet she is complaining about something she know nothing about. I wonder if all georgia people are crazy. no offense to the people who love and read the hp books.

Posted by proud_slytherin Jan 18th 2007

Because obviously reading is bad for kids. Of course this mother will never allow her kids to read Macbeth....

Posted by loona Jan 18th 2007

This woman is driving me nuts. She focuses all this energy on being anti-potter. She should be focusing on raising her kids. I'm gonna laugh they day they leave her house and decide to read the books they never got to even look at when they were younger. I have a little girl who is 6. I have found that it is pointless to censor what she watches (being 6 she doesn't watch much that is bad anyway) but rather take the time to watch at least one episode with her. If there is something "bad" in it I simply explain that they aren't things that we do in this family. Shes a smart kid (as most kids are) and she understands. She knows that just because she hears a word in a song, doesn't mean she's allowed to say it. So Laura, stop your "crusade" and just focus on helping your kids understand. The more you censor them, the more they will want to disobey you.

Posted by H2theP Jan 18th 2007

YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME!!!! Will this lady ever give it up? Harry Potter will not go away no matter how many times she tries to apeal it. Maybe she'll never learn, maybe she'll never read the books. But can she atleast just get over the fact that she has lost. No one is forcing her to read the books. So she shouldn't force anyone to NOT read the books. She needs to just let it go.

Posted by JEngle1122 Jan 18th 2007

Not all Christians are like Laura Mallory. DO NOT fall into those prejudices which JKR tries *so hard* to show us are WRONG. You can't say that all Christians are anti-Harry, or anti-Gay marriage, or anti-anything. This is simply NOT TRUE. In Harry Potter, don't we learn that you can't judge a group of people based on the actions of the individual?______________ _________________________ ____________ What about Fudge? Just because he was the LOUDEST ministry official, and he said that Harry was a liar and Dumbledore a quack, did that mean the whole ministry thought so? No way, half a dozen of them were in the Order from the get-go. And how about Filch? Are we to believe that just because he is bitter and resentful against fully-capable Wizards the rest of the Squibs in HP are? NO. Mrs. Figg helped save Harry's life in Little Whinging (although she'd probably be to humble to say so) even though he could do magic and she couldn't do anything. And just because Karkarov was a Death Eater, does that mean Krum or any Durmstrang will be? _________________________ _________________________ ____ PLEASE I implore you, if you really love Harry Potter surely you realize that the WARNING is not to fall into traps such as these in REAL LIFE. DO NOT be divisive! Not to judge on the exterior, but on what is inside. Please, please be careful what you allow yourself to feel... JKR herself shows us that if you cannot master yourself, then you cannot win.

Posted by mmesnape Jan 18th 2007

This woman reminds me of Dolores Umbridge. How, do you ask? Well, Umbridge did her stuff under the impression she was serving the Ministry, trying to quash anything that sounded like 'Voldemort is alive' (Obviously trying to gain recognition at the same time).... While 'Laura, the crusader' is going after anything that "might" be construed as devil-worshiping, under the impression that she is serving her 'Lord's' wishes, as she understands her scriptures (And trying to be seen as a good christian). Both are guilty of using strong-handed measures to kill any and all dissenting views with their self-serving, self-centered and biased judgement. Ultimately, they end up looking foolish and laying flat on their keisters. As for me, I just hope she stops her fight against HP and finds other venues to cry justice for the christian cause.... ie, poverty, crime, etc.

Posted by ccmandhp Jan 18th 2007

JEngle1122 : good post all around, but i dont think its safe to assume she hasn't read scripture. I for one think that Laura Mallory Praying to get rid of the harry potter books, is a wee bit of a waste of time. Frankly there are sooooooo much more for this generation that she could be praying for, much more serious problems. And frankly, when was the last time someone converted to Wicca because of HP? I mean honestly....the two things aren't even on the same level.

Posted by seriouslyaddictedtohp Jan 18th 2007

I think god forgot to give her something called dignity. I mean after being given the title "idiot of the year" any 1 would die of embarrasement. But then again she is an idiot. "no offense"

Posted by Horcrux8 Jan 18th 2007

What a moron.

Posted by Momof2isHPfan24 Jan 18th 2007

Ok I just now finished submitting a letter or message to every major news station, channel, or show about Mallory's stupidity lol. Maybe my voice will be heard as much as hers.

Posted by Obsessive87 Jan 18th 2007

Oh God! What a stupid women. How many times are people gonna blame the media for having an 'effect' on children! They're been looking at it for 60 years and have found no evidence it exists!! She should really learn that Harry Potter is not promoting witchcraft, and people wont be so naive to think 'ooh! Witchcraft! I want to do that cause its on TV!'. Idiot Women.

Posted by Roonilwwazlib Jan 18th 2007

Mrs. Mallory, I know you're not going to be reading this but i thought just in case you come to mugglenet you would. Harry potter is the coolest thing that ever existed and i believe that it is totally wrong to deprieve kids of their right to get entertainent out of such excellent books. I understand that you think they promote evil in children, and you are entitled to your opinion. Just let your own kids not read them, not everyone in the county. -Roonilwwazlib

Posted by JEngle1122 Jan 18th 2007

ccmandhp 14: That's fair, maybe she does read scripture. But she seems to be peddling the angle of a person who doesn't have all the facts. I keep waiting for her to quote some passages or historical examples at the least to back-up her defense, but either their not coming or the media is filtering it out. Either way, if she really had a strong case I think she's got enough media exposure to make it heard. She just keeps saying the same generic (a.k.a. unsupported) arguments over and over without any real support. Thanks for being objective.
