Mallory: I must not quit
For the first time since she embarked on a relentless campaign to remove Potter from Gwinnett county's school libraries in August 2005, Laura Mallory has spoken out in detail about her motives. In a new article, she slams "myths" such as "this is a one-woman fight" and "witchcraft is just harmless fantasy." She writes that young children have been indoctrinated into witchcraft, causing their lives to be ruined. Furthermore, she implies that Potter is the reason for "violence, drugs, gangs, addictions, perversions" in schools nowadays, and that "we need God in America again."

In response to the question, "Do you believe Harry Potter promotes Wicca," JKR replied in a 2001 interview with this: "That's not true. Not once has a child come up to me and said, 'Due to you I've decided to devote my life to the occult.' People underestimate children so hugely. They know it's fiction. When people are arguing from that kind of standpoint, I don't think reason works tremendously well. But I would be surprised if some of them had read the books at all [Mallory hasn't].

"Witches and wizards are a huge part of children's literature; it'll never go away. Hundred years, two hundred years' time there'll be another kind of wizard story."

You can now contact Ms. Mallory at her website. Also, we don't plan to post anything Mallory-related until a verdict of her current case arrives.

You tell her Jo! Laura Mallory will go away. She is just searching for her 15 minutes of fame, and I think you are right, the less time you give her on Mugglenet and in any news/press, the quicker she will go away. Verdicts only please.

Posted by Joshua21890 Jan 27th 2007

I wish she would just give up already.

Posted by Avalon Jan 27th 2007

For Heaven's sake, what is she trying to achieve? If you don't want your children read the book, fine, forbid them, but what right does she have to prevent other children from reading it as well?

Posted by Firebolt1 Jan 27th 2007

Oh dear lol :)

Posted by iceboots Jan 27th 2007

How in any way would reading Harry Potter encourage people to do drugs?

Posted by orangeparrot Jan 27th 2007

At what point will the courts refuse to hear her appeals? This is a waste of time and money.

Posted by Feeny Jan 27th 2007

What? Please someone tell me I'm dreaming. Ms Mallory, please, read the books, you're just making yourself look stupid.

Posted by Lupi Jan 27th 2007

I pity this woman's children. How humiliating must it be to have a mother like her? Although, perhaps they are as brainwashed by religious madness as she is herself. Was there no violence/drug taking, etc in US schools before the release of Philosopher's Stone? Were they all filled with angelic, pure children who rescued kittens from trees and helped old ladies across the road prior to that? I don't know, but I seriously doubt it.

Posted by nixnux Jan 27th 2007

oh man, her website hurts. how can someone be so deeply into god loosing his view for more in the world? as jo said, kids love fiction, furthermore her books are full of love, understanding and friendship (but how can you know if you haven't read them). And if someone thinks kids are too young for the books, wait till you believe they are old enough for them, i don't see any problem at all. Everyone has the right to decide on his own what he wants to read or what's good for his children. My device for Mrs Mallory: take your time and read the books, after this think of it again and decide on your own what you think of these books and not for all.

Posted by magicgirl_rulz_4eva Jan 27th 2007

I can not honestly belive that she is still banging on about preventing harry potter from being on the shelves of some bookstores. Her website has "quotes" from interveiws and such things to do with Harry potter being bad for children and that they can not see a difference bettween fantasy and reality. Honestly...

Posted by laurydory Jan 27th 2007

this woman is an absolute nut case. Witches and wizards in childrens literature will never go away but I wish Mallory would. While she's at it why doesn't she slam the chronicles of Narnia? Children may start to travel to different universes by way of their household furniture and .. oh boy.. look out... they may have fun! God forbid!

Posted by goody2shoes Jan 27th 2007

ok, a quick tip, actually READ the books. how can you protest against something you don't know anything about?! If she'd read the series she'd have noticed that the books actually promote friendship and unity!

Posted by uberskittles Jan 27th 2007

This woman is the hero of stupid people everywhere.

Posted by MeNotHer Jan 27th 2007

One cryptic, confuzzling message left on her site. Nothing threatening, thats not me. Just cryptic. This is ridiculous.

Posted by Quiscalus Jan 27th 2007

*Sigh* This is really getting out of hand. I read one of the articles on that site... it mentioned Lumos... and they made it sound as if the classes that were given were actually real magic. If anyone is interested in what one weirdy had to say: http://www.hisvoicetoday. org/hpfruit.htm . I contacted them and told them to leave Harry Potter alone and to go read the books. How could you blame DRUGS on Harry Potter. I mean, Dung smoked a pipe for about two seconds before Mrs. Weasley made him put it away. URGH! I could go on forever about this... so I'll stop now.

Posted by deepxinstatic Jan 27th 2007

I agree with iceboots and Lupi. I'm seriously considering bringing this up in my debate class/club. I'm wondering if she's ever read Macbeth- required reading for some high schools. Is she going to try and ban that as well? Surely not, seeing as how it's been considered classic literature for years. This woman is beyond ridiculous. How much more attention can she ask for? A series of books is not going to cause every little flaw in our world. I believe in God, I've read the books. I have yet to follow any wicca beliefs, become addicted to drugs, or had the urge to shoot up my whole school. I highly doubt I'm by myself in this case.

Posted by xxcrazedpotterfanxx Jan 27th 2007

Oh dear God what an idiotic woman! I feel so sorry for what her kids go through.

Posted by danni_shez Jan 27th 2007

This has got me so fired up! I have been curious about this woman for quite some time. I had a look at the articles on her website to figure out where on earth she was coming from, and what the basis of her argument was. I can't get over how uneducated the site's opinion is!! So many assumptions are made... and to make judgements like this WITHOUT having read the books just really REALLY annoys me. I want to call this woman and read the Harry Potter books to her over the phone. And when she stops answering my calls I will continue to read the books to her on her answering machine. STUPID stupid woman. I'm tempted to respond to every one of those articles on that site. They're completely ridiculous. D xo

Posted by LadyM Jan 27th 2007

*facepalm*....Guys, help me, i don't know whether to scowl or go into hysterical fits of laughter at this woman.. Let us let wise little ladym give advice: READ THE FREAKING BOOKS! maybe she should atleast TRY? i dont get it. I just dont get it. im trying so hard to see thins fom a different perspective, i can't, i really i can't. *Jo rocks more every day, btw* laurydory: you rock.: oh boy.. look out... they may have fun! God forbid! *rotfl*

Posted by Kitty09b Jan 27th 2007

Wow. If I was her, I would be so embarrassed. She is crazy. I have not heard in my entire life about anyone, kid or adult, being switched to witchcraft because of the books/movies. I'm a christian, no one in my entire church has a problem with Harry Potter. If kids become obsessed with witchcraft from the books, it's their fault for not being able to handle it. Ugh, Laura Mallory, you make me sick!

Posted by machelle Jan 27th 2007

Just like Umbridge, Mallory is promoting the books by creating hype and trying to forbide them. I am willing to bet that several hundred people have read these books to see what all the fuss is about. Perhaps we should thank her for expanding the Harry Potter readership.

Posted by thefiona007 Jan 27th 2007

Like omg! I sooooo agree with that!* I've just finished reading the HP series and now Im gonna go and smoke some pot. -_- *sarcasum.

Posted by LadyM Jan 27th 2007

By the way, i don't get a darn thing from he website. It's all junk. Junk.Junk.JUNKKKKKK...... .....

Posted by elphaba8906 Jan 27th 2007

this is so stupid what next....Will harry potter be responsible for "global Warming"???

Posted by Strider_of_Eire Jan 27th 2007

Went to her site, Posted a rant, Felt much, MUCH better!

Posted by fabricio429 Jan 27th 2007

The nerve of this woman.. it's starting to get personal.. AND NOW SHE HAS A WEBSITE??? it's obvious that she's doing this for the publicity.. not for her religious believes.. and for that she's soooo going to hell

Posted by Glaedr Jan 27th 2007

As a fan and also as a Christian I have to agree that she has gone too far. If she's that worried about fiction involving magic, why is she not complaining about "His Dark Materials"? If -any- book series has an anti-religious message it it's that one. (Please note that I also enjoyed the HDM books, even though I disagreed with some of the authors veiws). I run a large fansite, as well as helping out with several others. I have met literally hundreds of fans. Only two of them were wiccan. TWO. And those two people were wiccans -before- they became Harry Potter fans. It's quite obvious that Mallory hasn't read the books. If she had bothered to read them, she'd know that the entire story is centred love, and the giving of one life for that love. If that isn't a Christian message, I don't know what is.

Posted by addie17 Jan 27th 2007

whatever it is...im glad mugglenet has decided NOT to post anything about this woman until the verdict...we have wasted enough space on her as it is.

Posted by Wildfire Jan 27th 2007

If you assume that the books do promote Wicca, which all of us who read the book know it doesn't, but if it did... Then wouldn't banning the books from public library the same as banning religious text from the library? Isn't there something about freedom of speech and freedom of worship in the US???

Posted by Viktor_Krum7 Jan 27th 2007

She's a complete idiot ... those problems with teenagers existed way before Harry Potter, and I don't care if she tries to make HP illegal, I'm still going to read Deathly Hallows.

Posted by deepxinstatic Jan 27th 2007

One more thing: I think Mallory needs to take a look at our constitution, you know, the one on which our country was founded since she herself said we needed to return to the "...roots upon which our blessed country was founded." Oh and by the way Mallory, we killed off thousands of innocent people when our "blessed country was founded." Since when does God approve of that? Harry Potter didn't have a thing to do with it. Anyway, the constitution- "The right of freedom of speech and press...embraces the right to distribute literature and necessarily protects the right to receive it."--Martin v. Struthers. It's that wonderful first amendment, learn to love it- it's not going anywhere.

Posted by iluvbeingme23 Jan 27th 2007

Bored? No. Angry? Yes. Honestly, I agree with the statement that we need God in America, but this is not the way to do it. Angering Harry Potter fans, including Christian Harry Potter fans, is not the way to open America's heart to God again. Harry Potter can't be blamed for the things that teenagers decide to do themselves(drugs, violence, etc.). It is their responsibility to do or not do those things. Next thing you know, this woman will be blaming Paris Hilton's singing career on Harry Potter.

Posted by faeirydancer Jan 27th 2007

Dosn't this woman realize that it's a ones personal decision to decide how they believe and not what HP reads? HP is imaginative and well thought out. Does jelously play a part in her 'crusade'? Maybe she dosn't like HP because you have to be well read to understand some of the assides in the series. What's funny is I'm a witch most of my friends and aquaintences are Pagans in one form or another and are far more 'christian' than most christians. Does this "god freak" want to ban the Wizard of Oz? How about Hansel and Gretel? or are the represeantive to her what a witch is supposed to be? I guess no one can really know whats on in her head, other than she wants to force her beliefs down the throats of her entire school district. All I want to tell her is: Lady, if you don't like the choice of books offered your children in public or private schools HOMESCHOOL YOU TWIT! 'nuff said.... Now i shall rant at her *insert evil grin* and I shan't be as nice as i was here. Blessed Be to all HP fans and to JK

Posted by braders101 Jan 27th 2007

Okay, this women should SOOOO just give up. She is perfectly in her rights to tell her own children not to read the book, but to try and stop other children from reading is down right RUDE and PATHETIC! Its bad enough that she aint even read the book!

Posted by theREALginny88 Jan 27th 2007

Posted by DIEVOLDEMORT Jan 27th 2007

HAHA im going to contact her and give her a piece of my mind!

"sing song way" ;) mallory is the bloody girl........ of a bloody witch... and should be thrown in a ditch. the wicked witch, she dares...... how dare she?????????? anyway, harry potter CANT be banned... mallory is the bloody girl of a freakie witch and should be thrown in a ditch.... ;)

Posted by Avalon Jan 27th 2007

She really Does reminf Umbridge, come to think about it. Both narrow-minded and dangerous in the fanatic deeds. Maybe we should open READTHEBOOKS.COM ? She's a nut case.

Posted by LadyM Jan 27th 2007

right-o...just one more thing, i really think that we need to do SOMETHING about it, i mean she is talking about us, the fans, as being sucked into the 'dark side', right? I think we need to have a say in it--but thats just me. i just took a closer look at her website and i seriously think its outrageous. I mean, nobody has so much of a problem as her and all of these refrences to the bible and stuff, i think (i don't know much bout it, im muslim) don't really have to do with the point shes trying make, and i just can't see where its all coming from, no reason behind all of the info shes putting, i mean she really HASNT READ THE BOOKS. Im just really angry and confused, i guess...:-(

Posted by Ryuji35 Jan 27th 2007

I really don't get it! What's with her?!!! I mean, I love Jesus Christ, WE love Jesus Christ so much and also GOD. And I love Literature, and I am one of the children who was opened to book reading because of Harry Potter when I was 11 (2001). I am a Harry Potter Fanatic. So Much. And Yet, I still woke up in the morning a christian, a good person, and the same as myself and not a freak who calls myself a wizard.... duh!! I have nothing against her, it's just her very wrong understanding about things.

Posted by YoMama Jan 27th 2007

Are you kidding me? She's still going at it? Okay, it's my turn to get on the soapbox *stands on soapbox*. This woman is INSANE! Look, I'm a Christian and I'm very particular about what I read, listen, and watch, and if I had problems with Harry, I think I would at least have the intelligence to realise that everyone has their own opinion and they usually don't like it when other opinions, especially uneducated, idiotic, moronic, I could go on....opinions are continually forced on them. I also think that I would have read the books just to see what everyone was getting worked up about, and if my opinion didn't change, I could say that I've read the books in order to form a more informed opinion. At any rate, I have read the books, I love the books, and they definitely do not promote witchcraft. I agree with Glaedr about HDM. I've read those and I liked them, but don't necessarily agree with them. It's people like Mallory who give Christians such a bad rep. We're definitely not all like that, but we're just as sincere in our faith. I respect other people's right to their own opinion, and if they don't want their kids reading the books, that's their decision. Forcing other people's kids to follow your parental view, however, is never going to go over well with very many people. They say she's from Gwinnette County. Sheeesh, I'm from Glynn County, and don't you know that we have problems of our own (*cough*school board*cough*), but if someone tried to ban the books in our county, people would sue. Then they would get paid. Then they would move to Camden County. What can I say, Southerners like to be extreme like that. Too bad Mallory picked the wrong side. People who don't pick sides are smart enough to keep their mouths shut. Anyway, I hope that this woman hasn't given any of you a bad opinion of Southerners, or more specifically, Georgians, we're really not as bad as all that, and most of us can read. Apparently Mallory is one such person who can't...

Posted by Gryffprefect Jan 27th 2007

Lol. Please... it's the people that don't read books like Harry Potter that are responsible for violence, drugs, gangs, addictions, perversions. Why is it that people like her assume because we read Harry Potter, we are atheist fools with no sense of God in our lives. I am in fact a Catholic. Maybe if she would actually read the books she would realise how overbearingly smallminded she is. And why only Harry Potter, there are tonnes of books and movies with reference to witchcraft in them somehow proving she definately is an attention seeker at all costs by only targeting one of the biggest franchises in the world.

Posted by Janeykins Jan 27th 2007

"she implies that Potter is the reason for "violence, drugs, gangs, addictions, perversions" in schools nowadays" Oh yes i can picture it now...your typical hardnut gangleader addicted to drugs and beating people up...then he comes homes and curls up with Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix for a bit of light reading and some more ideas on how to hurt people Too bad he cant really find many as you sort of need a wand in the books...

Posted by faeirydancer Jan 27th 2007

If you do not like the choice of books offered your children in their school HOMESCHOOL! have you even thought of their well being at school have you even really asked them what happens at school? are kids terrorizing them because of their "crazy mother"? you are not the morality police nor are you one to challange the first AMMENDMENT. People with far more to lose than you have been challanged by this RIGHT and have come out hailing the founding fathers. "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances." So keep trying if you want but you won't get any court in the nation to forgo this Constitutional right. This happy Homeschooling PAGAN teaching pagan beliefs and differances in opinions to her young charge look to the goddess and thank her everyday that we can embrace differances and forgive ingorance and stupidity. * What i posted to her* maybe she'll get th point? Yeah I doubt it too

Posted by skates Jan 27th 2007

*sighs* Once again I must state that THIS WOMAN HAS NO HEAD!!!!!!!! I forgot that JO had previously stated that on her website, you tell them!!!!! Probably the thing that gets me the most about all this is that people who are so against books and movies with witchcraft and wizardry really haven't looked into it enough to despise and state their silly little lives on it. Somone needs to shut this woman up soon......

Posted by YoMama Jan 27th 2007

I would now like to quote one of my personal favourite philosophers, Forrest Gump. "Stupid is as stupid does."

Posted by Avalon Jan 27th 2007

Anyone, who has actually READ the book (which excludes her automatically) will no doubt be amused or outraged (or both) by her accusations. The books are actually showing the hard choice between 'Good 'and 'Evil'. And as a devoted HP fan and Christian (though I honestly don't see what has the religion to do with the books), I would be glad to assure her I've never been tempted by 'evil' things.

Posted by sonic07 Jan 27th 2007

What an idiot! Now we hav a way to contact her i think he should all send her threatning messages saying we'll put curses on her unless she stops her stupid campaign!

Posted by Calypphire Jan 27th 2007

First thing I will admit to is that I am a Catholic and yes, I believe in God. But like that has stopped me from loving anything and everything that has witchcraft and all of that in it. This Mallory woman is one of those radicals who are afraid of a little imagination. Harry Potter does not, I repeat, does not promote Satanism and I believe this Mallory woman needs to give up. She has all the right in the world to stop her children from reading Harry Potter and any other book that has Witches, Vampires and other 'Satanic' creatures. But I wish she would stop trying to tell other parents or people in general on what to do. It's even more of a pain in the neck when she cannot see that Harry Potter is fiction, as in NOT REAL. Oh and the Bible, in my opinion, was written by bigots. I believe that Ms Mallory should get a life and give up this 'quest' to banned Harry Potter from American libraries, as it is not going to happen. Harry Potter is here to stay, for J. K. Rowling will be remembered just like Shakespeare, Beatrix Potter and many other brilliant authors and poets. HARRY POTTER RULES! nuff said.

Posted by chemo_man Jan 27th 2007

"Thank you so much! thanks to you, you have really opened my mind to the cult of Harry Potter. I have read the books since I was 13, I am 19 now. My God! Do you think that the books cause me to age? This is horrible! Save me!" That was my response to her.....enjoy!
