Mallory: I must not quit
For the first time since she embarked on a relentless campaign to remove Potter from Gwinnett county's school libraries in August 2005, Laura Mallory has spoken out in detail about her motives. In a new article, she slams "myths" such as "this is a one-woman fight" and "witchcraft is just harmless fantasy." She writes that young children have been indoctrinated into witchcraft, causing their lives to be ruined. Furthermore, she implies that Potter is the reason for "violence, drugs, gangs, addictions, perversions" in schools nowadays, and that "we need God in America again."

In response to the question, "Do you believe Harry Potter promotes Wicca," JKR replied in a 2001 interview with this: "That's not true. Not once has a child come up to me and said, 'Due to you I've decided to devote my life to the occult.' People underestimate children so hugely. They know it's fiction. When people are arguing from that kind of standpoint, I don't think reason works tremendously well. But I would be surprised if some of them had read the books at all [Mallory hasn't].

"Witches and wizards are a huge part of children's literature; it'll never go away. Hundred years, two hundred years' time there'll be another kind of wizard story."

You can now contact Ms. Mallory at her website. Also, we don't plan to post anything Mallory-related until a verdict of her current case arrives.

Emerson's Comment: Winners never quit and quitters never win. But those who never win and never quit are idiots.

All you people commenting! How dare you accuse Ms. Mallory of being wrong! Are you trying to deny that EVIL HERMY buys drugs from Grawp on the sly! Or that EVIL HARRY is actually trying to kill the god of good, VOLDEMORT?! Or that EVIL RON and EVIL ARAGOG are dating? How dare you?

Ha ha... My fave part is where she likens JK to Lenin. Its good that there are people like her out there... I love the fight!

WOOT go emerson's comment! brightens up everyone's day! ( or following morning ) :-)

Posted by marythefairy09 Jan 28th 2007

what's so ridiculous about laura mallory and why there are 600 comments every time new about her crops up here, I believe, is not mainly because she's trying to ban Harry Potter, but because she's trying to ban it but hasn't even read the series. Her intellectual level and ours are on such a far scale, that its hard for us to comprehend exactly why the idiotic human is doing what she is doing. Therefore, this situation can lead to fascination, which clearly explains why we are so fascinated by her and her claims.

Posted by RKRK1313 Jan 28th 2007

haha some of these comments make me laugh. keep sending her mail. its actually quite fun.

Posted by josgalthrunthru Jan 28th 2007

I just sent an email to her. Yaay! Here's what I wrote: Thank you for helping to spread the word about Harry Potter. Because of your campaign, people who were previously not aware of the existence of Harry Potter are becoming aware and are reading the books out of curiosity and are becoming fans (coz, of course, once you read the books, the material speaks for itself). This, in turn, is helping increase the popularity of the books. All us Harry Potter fans are very grateful to you. None of us, even as a combined effort, had, ever before, been able to popularize Harry Potter so much.Thanking you. Sincerely, Shalmal i.

Posted by DondaLonda Jan 28th 2007

psychandtheology, well done for thinking logically and fairly. Have you guys never thought that perhaps Mallory didn't want all this publicity all she wanted was for the books to not be taught to her elementary school children. When she couldn't get that she had to take it further and when the media found out, well it reeked of controversial discussion and makes people read their articles so of course they're going to make a big issue out of it. I know what the media is capable of doing as I've been 'quoted' on stuff that not only did i not say but wasn't even the situation at all. Mallory isn't trying to get rid of all HP books, she just wants more control over what her small children read and learn. That's not wrong. We all agree that it's not a children's book anyway.

Posted by JMandrake Jan 28th 2007

Now what is this lady thinking? I mean honestly! Now if she would really stop and think about this then she would realize that trying to get rid of Harry Potter would be like trying to get rid of The Wizard of Oz or Wicked. I mean the whole of the world would laugh at her for even suggesting such a thing. But would she do that? I highly doubt it. If you asked her why she hasn't suggested such a thing is because she knows that there is no way to accomplish such a thing. Which in itself baffles me at why she is doing this with Harry Potter. I swear, some peoples' kids, I bet that her mother is now saying that she is adopted.

Posted by Glitterbug Jan 28th 2007

No, keep posting stuff on her. She makes great entertainment! Oh Emerson, you do have a way with words. Perfectly put, again.

Posted by HappyHippogryff Jan 28th 2007

DondaLonda - you are right, her original claim was not to have the children reading the books in school and they certainly are not for very young children. And yes the media do help to spiral things out of control. But she has gone and created a website and a blog and appeared on national TV. She has refused to accept decisions made by a majority in a democracy and i feel is now perpetuating the controversy this has become. I think what people really object to is her outlandish claims of connections between HP and drugs, violence etc. And the biggest objection is to the fact she has never read the books. You just can't stand up and be respected for something you believe if you haven't even done the research.

Posted by RKRK1313 Jan 28th 2007

DondaLonda - I can see what you mean. But perhaps she should have simply told her kids not to read them and taken them out of school if they are being read. Also, not once does she actually say they were being read to the class. If they were then she could have politely excused her kids from taking part in those activites. Instead, she made it into a much larger issue...for one, because she simply has a different mindset than the rest of us and is incapable of understanding. But even more, in the process of doing all of this she has said things that I am appalled at. On her website she talks as if people who don't follow God should be jailed. She has no regard for others beliefs and seems soley focused on herself and her personal vendetta against the books. She is fundamentally wrong on so many levels it is astounding. So, naturally fans of the series are going to send her mail. That's what the contact form is for on her website, right? She wouldn't put it there unless she didn't want mail. And we are giving it to her. But lastly, why would she create a very public website about her vendetta unless she wanted all this attention. She clearly not only wants to get rid of the books from the classroom but wants to simultaneously spread her foolish words around. And that there is where my main disagreement with her is. Although, at the same time, I will admit I don't really care that she might not have wanted it to become this big of an issue. The fact remains that she did it, and I don't agree with her. So I'm going to keep sending her mail.

Posted by weaselette Jan 28th 2007

She raises a good point, I always find myself and my gang smoking pot after we popcorn read Half-Blood Prince. Honestly, does she have any proof? It's a shame, she seems like a very nice lady, just a little misguided. I wouldn't mind (well I would, but probably not as much) her rant of anti-Potter if she'd read the books. Is she trying to ban the Chronicles of Narnia, which conveys Christianity through magic?

Posted by RKRK1313 Jan 28th 2007

Oh wow. I was just reading her site a bit more and I was looking at the quote section and she has a quote from Sorcerer's Stone: “See what I have become,” the face said “mere shadow and vapor. I have form only when I can share another’s body. But there have always been those willing to let me into their hearts and minds. Unicorn blood has strengthened me these past weeks.” and then in parantheses she says: (This clearly is demon possession, and nothing less.) seriously what an idiot. that quote was said by none other than Lord Voldemort who is probably the evilest character ever. she really hasn't read the books.

Posted by HappyHippogryff Jan 28th 2007

Laura Mallory is trying to have withdrawn in her children’s school a series of books she believes inspire children into drugs, violence etc. These books she has never read, and yet she follows her course of action based on her interpretation of a book she has read (the Bible). How terribly ironic. What’s also terribly ironic is the HP books teach of loyalty and friendship. Of courage and hope. Of good over evil. She talks of children being harmed by the HP books. Children are harmed by adults abusing them, neglecting them, exposing them to drugs, violence, sex, and making bad choices that ultimately affect them. Children are harmed by adult's choices, not books. She is entitled to her opinion but needs, at least read the books and do her research properly. Children get into trouble because their parents make bad choices, not because of books they read. I know, I’ve seen and worked for over 12 years with the devastation left behind by poor parenting. Many of the children I work with struggle to read and therefore be educated, because of their parents' neglect etc. The HP books were a blessing when they came along, introducing reading as fun to these children who have consequently gone on to achieve in school and make successes of their lives. They understand the underlying themes in the books of friendship and loyalty, of courage and truth, of sacrifice for the greater good, the importance of a loving family, of being tolerant of difference, of good versus evil. If a parent does not wish her own children to do something, then don't let them. Equally one needs to respect the majority decision of a democracy, in this case the decision of the hearing that turned down Mallory’s claims. She can still prevent her young children from being exposed to something she disagrees with, by being their parent. You just can’t stand up and be respected for something you believe in if you haven’t even done the research.

I'll probably get some flames for this, but I'm not coming back to read these comments, so feel free to flame away. lol ...While I'm a HUGE Potter fan and I know that the books do NOT teach children "witchcraft" or encourage them to join the occult and such, I still don't really think bashing the woman to bits is all that mature. Neither is posting the contact page of her website, encouraging people to send her nasty messages. She's fighting for what she believes. Yes, her beliefs are misguided and yes, she's 'preaching' about stuff she really knows nothing about, since she's never read the books. But honestly, why is it that when someone stands up for something they believe in, people don't hesitate in bashing them? Or at least that's the case when it's GOD that they are standing up for. If it's any other 'liberal' issue, then they get praised for standing up for their beliefs (taking prayer OUT of school, anyone?). Anyway...I think some of you people need to take a step back and read over the messages you have posted and/or sent to this lady and think about how you would feel if it were YOU who were simply trying to fight for something you believed in. Because some of these comments are completely unnecessary and uncalled for.

Posted by EloquentPhoenix Jan 28th 2007

Must. Not. Send. Hatemail... I like Emerson's comment :) Suits her perfectly.

Posted by AriaAlways Jan 28th 2007

I am writing to her through that website. I'm a Christian and I love the books. Please, any others Christians out there, contact her and tell her why the world loves JKR's wonderful stories.

Posted by playboy_mommy Jan 28th 2007

I can't help but notice that there's a lot of anger amongst the fans about this; this truly ridiculous quest. Yet this woman deserves our pity not our anger. She's dismissing something she has absolutely no experience of solely because she feels that the subject matter included may possibly infringe on something that she believes. She's a woman so caught up in her own self-importance, that she's taken on this unrelenting quest, without bothering to investigate what it is that she's fighting against. How can she possibly draw the conclusions she does without reading the book? I think that it's sad that she's fighting something that's brought so many children, and adults, so much pleasure. Something has brought back the pleasure of reading to a generation. What she's trying to achieve is censorship, nothing more, and I think the events of May 10th 1933 show what a slippery slope that is.

Posted by RKRK1313 Jan 28th 2007

You are right FaithInSnape 5. You probably will get flames. I get the whole respect her beliefs part of it. But actually, I would say the majority of us aren't just bashing her. I, for one, wrote a very long and detailed message to her refuting all of her arguments so as to provide her with the views of one who disagrees with her. In fact, those of you who may be sending her 'hate mail' where all you do is say that she is stupid and HP rocks or whatever...well I think you should probably not do that. It really just proves what she's saying. We will come off as unintelligent and angry people. When writing to her try to articulate yourself in an intelligent way. If you have ever read MLK's "Letter from Birmingham Jail" you will know what I mean. If not i would suggest looking it up on google and reading it.. it's a really good piece of writing considering he wrote it in jail. Basically, we should strive to make our messages to Laura Mallory like those that MLK sent. However, FaithInSnape 5 - I do believe you are out of line with the liberal comment. It's not relevant and doesn't even need to be brought up. This isn't about liberals or conservatives.

This is what I sent to Laura Mallory: I like to think I come across as intelligent and knowledgeable, though I may of course be entirely wrong. "My general question or enquiry is this: why are you attempting to ruin the Harry Potter books? Your website makes the books out to be intentionally evil, containing subliminal (and not so subliminal) messages that evil is good and witchcraft should be practiced. Laura Mallory, have you ever read the books? I am sure you have not, and I am also sure that if you did, your prejudicial view of them would cloud all better judgement and make you view them as evil. I have read every book at least three times, I have enjoyed every book I have read, and I have never taken nor contemplated taking drugs, never practiced nor thought of practicing magic (which I do realise is not real), and I am a perfectly normal, happy, well-balanced person with a good heart and mind. Of course terrible things happen in Harry Potter, including murder, possession, curses and someone drinking the blood from a unicorn, but not once do the books even come close to promoting those things. They are terrible things, things that no one should ever contemplate doing, and are shown in this way. The good characters do use magic, but these books are fictional; just as fictional as the television shows where animals and infants speak, movies where Elves and such things exist, and very famous comics where a man wearing a blue suit with a large S in the centre has superhuman abilities such as the ability to fly, to hear very quiet things, to move at the speed of light, to lift extremely heavy objects and so on. Why are you not condemning these things? Why are you not condemning Lord of The Rings, The Chronicles of Narnia or Star Wars? Why are you focusing solely on Harry Potter; a series that has inspired millions of children to read when they had previously not wanted to? A series that promotes friendship, bravery and most especially love? A series that lets us ...

Posted by ginny_babe92 Jan 28th 2007

Continued on from the last post... "read about magic and distantly experience it through the characters, so that we will never seek to explore it in reality? People have jumped off roofs in the hope that they would fly like superman; children all over the world have pretend battles with plastic 'lightsabers' in which they attempt to re-enact scenes from the Star Wars Saga; and people walk around holding rings, whispering 'My Precious' and attacking anyone that tries to take it. Why aren't you upset about this? Why are you fighting so hard in a losing battle against Harry Potter? Please, forbid your children to read it, protest about it to your close relations, but do not attempt to prevent others from reading this wonderful series, I beg of you." Thankyou, and goodnight!

Posted by MimbleWimble Jan 28th 2007

I almost feel sorry for her. the poor woman is obviously insane.

Posted by Glitterbug Jan 28th 2007

Want to know something? I don't care about her beliefs. She is perfectly entitled to them. And she is perfectly entitled to take her kids out of school if they are reading Harry Potter. But she isn't entitled to shove her misguided and prejudiced and ENTIRELY UNFOUNDED (read the books!!!) beliefs down other people's throats. Whatever happened to the separation of church and state? I live in England and think that it's a damned good idea, whatever George Bush says. Bring it back, I say. And give the woman a copy of Philosopher's Stone. I'm sure she'd change her mind. It's a hell of a lot more enjoyable than the Bible in anycase. This woman needs her own page on the "Wall of Shame". Next to the militant H/Hr shippers who think that sending Emerson hate mail will change JKR's mind, and stop us all using the word "delusional" as an in-joke. Rant over. xxx

Posted by merry_muggle Jan 28th 2007

Glitterbug: I agree with most of what you say, except for the bit about the Bible. Please don't say that Harry Potter is better than it, even if you don't think it is, don't insult my, and other people's regligion, please.

Posted by mia_metamorph Jan 28th 2007

Someone go and tell her that she should read the books herself first or maybe she`ll say that i`ll get addicted to it so i dont want to.Idiotic git. She should see a Phychatrist and i won`t be surprised if the psychatrist himself goes mad trying to cure her dung filled head.

Posted by TonkyTonks Jan 28th 2007

oh this lady is so making it worse for herself everytime she opens her mouth....slamming 'myths' is just ridiculous.....every country in the world has myths relating to their origins, associations with giants, gods and what not, does she really think we believe them all... you know the saying quit while your ahead...she should just quit while she's behind!!!!!!

Posted by Obsessionful Jan 28th 2007

Oh my gosh, last night on the way home from a jazz concert, the car in front of us had a Georgia liscence plate. I didn't care. Until I saw the county. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, the plate was from none other than Gwinnett county. I started flipping out and screaming and hitting the dashboard in front of me. My mom looks at me weird, to which I promptly scream "GWINNETT COUNTY! LAURA MALLORY! MOM! SHE'S TRYING TO BAN HARRY POTTER BOOKS! LET'S SNIPE HER!!!" The chances that it actually was Laura Mallory was pretty small, but still. I'm an HP fan :D

Posted by TonkyTonks Jan 28th 2007

i feel sorry for what her kids must be going through...they'll be scarred for life....they must be getting bullied and everything in school due to her actions

Posted by Cherrylicious24 Jan 28th 2007

Preach, Emerson!

Posted by HappyHippogryff Jan 28th 2007

The blog, I did send something there last night, hopefully a sensible grown up discussion as to why the HP books are not evil but it's not posted. I'm wondering if they are inundated? Or not posting. Oh well, as for comments like 'let's snipe her'... let's grow up shall we and show Mallory that despite reading the HP books we are respectable, mature, sensible people who respect opinions that are well researched. She doesn't need us sending poisonous emails, or threatening her. She is entitled to try and persuade anyone who wishes to listen that god is good (I agree) and HP is evil (I don't agree). Like I keep saying, respect to her when she does the reading and comes up with a convincing arguement (which she probably won't because there is no convincing arguement). But keep the mean talk coming and she'll be able to quote the Mugglenetters as spawn of evil Harry Potter.

Posted by AlyGranger Jan 28th 2007

I "contacted" her on her site. This is what I said: "You are all evil. Literature is a way for children to expand their minds, and imagine. Harry Potter has nothing against Christianity. If you haven't noticed (which, by not reading the books is quite likely), Harry Potter is Christian and celebrates the holidays. If you believe Harry Potter turns children to the Devil, why not TV, every other book with magic, computers, school, and eating. You're practically a Puritan, taking away pleasure because you believe everything leads to sins. Well, you know what happened to the Puritans. I wish you luck not being hanged during the Salem Witch Trails of the Future."

Posted by Daisfunky Jan 28th 2007

lol I'll drink to that, Emerson. I respect the fact that this woman wants "God back in America" but I don't think that showing hostility and anger towards children's books and to people who read them, is the best way to go about achieving her goal. I suggest she reads Philosopher's Stone, back when the Potter books were innocent and light. I can see this woman becoming JKR's biggest fan in a few years time....In fact, she may make a claim that JKR has stolen her idea of Larry Brotter, the boy who did not live, and went to "Heavenworts" school of angels and imagey....

Posted by quichua_girl Jan 28th 2007

yiou know...emerson's comment just says it all.

Posted by gryffindor_phoenix Jan 28th 2007

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't her kids homeschooled? If they are, then what concern is it of hers that Harry Potter is read in public school??

Posted by jay4034 Jan 28th 2007

I definite sign of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. I don't remember who said this but i think it applies here.

Posted by hermy1011 Jan 28th 2007

what gang members read harry potter? and how does hp lead to drugs?

Posted by invisible_ Jan 28th 2007

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA HAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!! She makes me laugh so much. I hope the books aren't banned, but I also wish she continues like this for a loooooooong time. I love seeing her pointless efforts; they're hilarious. xD Of course, I'm sure all of us, Harry Potter fans, must be evil by now. But does she REALLY think that drugs and violence are due to Harry Potter?!?! That's crazy. She should do a little research; she'd probably figure out pretty quickly that drugs and violence existed since forever. It's certainly not Harry Potter that triggered it. -.-

Posted by alien Jan 28th 2007

how can a person act like this. laura is such an idiot.she is so jealous of jkr that she doen't know what she is doing. a letter to laura: laura , why are you acting like this?. first of all what do you know about harry potter?. have you ever thought about it. on what base are you fighting?. you are scared that you would change your opinion about hp if you read it. pls for heaven sake pls read the book and then open your mouth.at least after this i hope you "think".

Posted by Tora Jan 28th 2007

I'm stunned... I knew people were opposed to the HP books, but I never thought they were so deluded! A manual for teaching witchcraft?!? *keels over laughing* Im sure I wouldn't pass a single OWL on what I have learnt of the fictional curriculum in the books, and I've read them several times. Haha!

Posted by invisible_ Jan 28th 2007

DondaLonda - I understand your point of view. BUT, she doesn't, in any case, need to stop people from reading and believing whatever they want to read and believe. We should respect her religion, she should respect what we like. That's how it should be: she can love and believe in God and Jesus if she wishes, but us, Harry Potter fans, can love the Harry Potter books. I think religion controls us too much. I don't believe in anything, but I usually respect every single religion. But it's going to far, this time. It shouldn't stop us in our daily lives. It shouldn't affect other people than yourself. Religion is a personal choice. You may believe what you want to believe, but don't try to force the others.

if anything, harry potter promotes the most important christian message of all - that love and friendship can beat anything. look at harry and his mum, the protection she surrounded him with was all because of love. LOVE. L.O.V.E. seriously, stick a sock in this womans mouth, please?
