Mallory: I must not quit
For the first time since she embarked on a relentless campaign to remove Potter from Gwinnett county's school libraries in August 2005, Laura Mallory has spoken out in detail about her motives. In a new article, she slams "myths" such as "this is a one-woman fight" and "witchcraft is just harmless fantasy." She writes that young children have been indoctrinated into witchcraft, causing their lives to be ruined. Furthermore, she implies that Potter is the reason for "violence, drugs, gangs, addictions, perversions" in schools nowadays, and that "we need God in America again."

In response to the question, "Do you believe Harry Potter promotes Wicca," JKR replied in a 2001 interview with this: "That's not true. Not once has a child come up to me and said, 'Due to you I've decided to devote my life to the occult.' People underestimate children so hugely. They know it's fiction. When people are arguing from that kind of standpoint, I don't think reason works tremendously well. But I would be surprised if some of them had read the books at all [Mallory hasn't].

"Witches and wizards are a huge part of children's literature; it'll never go away. Hundred years, two hundred years' time there'll be another kind of wizard story."

You can now contact Ms. Mallory at her website. Also, we don't plan to post anything Mallory-related until a verdict of her current case arrives.

i totally agree with what JKR said. It's not like she is a Satan worshiper and only wears black! I know many people and they are still the same. If she says that Harry Potter isn't appropriate for kids, then what about "Sword in the Stone" or "Matilda"? Those were kids movies/books and they involve magic. i doubt that kids will start turning "evil" just from reading a FICTIONAL novel or watching a movie!

I was happy to see that we could finally contact Ms. Mallory. This is the message I sent to her... Dear Ms. Mallory, I, too, was apprehensive about letting my daughter read the Harry Potter books, having heard the controversy. She expressed her wishes to read the series, and I asked her why? Her answer surprised me. She did not say that she was interested in witchcraft or that she wanted to read a fantasy novel. She wanted to read about the brilliant, strong-willed, courageous female lead in the novels, namely Hermione. So, I did something that you might find a bit odd. I went to our local library and actually read Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. It was fantastic. I couldn’t put it down. I bought the second book in the series while I allowed my daughter to catch up to me on the first. We have both now read all six and we are patiently awaiting Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. In the mean time we are enjoying theorizing and predicting. We re-read the books all the time, trying to find small details that we missed. This is something my daughter and I share. My daughter is no longer ashamed to be the “straight A know-it-all”. I adore her new found confidence. You've said your peace. Enough is enough. Some of the greatest literary works of all time have been on the banned books list (The Scarlet Letter, Of Mice and Men, To Kill a Mockingbird, Alice in Wonderland, etc). I have no doubt that the Harry Potter series will, one day, be held in the same ranks as these books. That's not something to be ashamed of. Thank you.

Mallory needs to quit this stupid idiocy. She knows sure enough that HP can not be banned from anywhere. What she says about HP putting guns and violence and drugs into our schools? Jo would not write something that promotes things like that. I am Christian. That does not stop me from reading and loving HP. As long as I know that the topics of HP are not real. I will keep reading and LOVING these books. HP has become part of American culture. And unless you've been living under a rock for the past couple years, you would know that the rate of witchcraft following children (if there ever were any) hasn't really gone up. If religion has anything to do with the books, Ms.Mallory, I suggest that you inform us on that, because I have never once read one sentence in any of the books that states anything about religion. You can keep your own children from reading the books if you want to. But you can't keep America's children from reading the books.

This woman is rediculous. I hope her kids grow up to be huge harry potter fans. that'll serve her right.

Posted by an_oddesy_in_potter Jan 28th 2007

well i strongly suggest to emerson to start a mallory sucks section.though i know that this might just be against the law or something but we should really do something about people like her who try to hurt Jo just to get a scrap of her fame.......

Posted by LupinsGoddaughter Jan 28th 2007

Oh my! Harry Potter might turn me against God! The last Pope said HP was completely fine! She is so full of it! She hasn't even read the books! Emerson, I do believe she deserves a full page on the Wall of Shame! She is never going to win. Mater fatua est! (For thoses who speak Latin!) HP will never fail; she will never win!

Posted by britishwannabe Jan 28th 2007

Stupid woman. I feel bad for her poor kids. Does she know that more or less of the whole Harry Potter fandom hates her? HEH. I can't stand that womans rants anymore.

Posted by HappyHippogryff Jan 28th 2007

Hear, hear Neonxheart The underlying themes of all the Harry Potter books are: friendship and loyalty, courage and truth, sacrifice for the greater good, the importance of a loving family, being tolerant of difference, good versus evil and love. and LOL Daisfunky - Larry Brotter indeed *rolls about floor laughing*! I feel that perhaps yours is the attitude we should take from now on. Do write a chapter or two. I want to hear about Larry and his time at Heavenworts...:)

Posted by Regulus_Black Jan 28th 2007

'Mater fatua est' - well said LupinsGoddaughter, she is darn foolish. Ialso thinkn it's true to say that 'mulier a dedecus ut humanus est'. I'm all for free speach and everything, but this is just ridiculus.

Posted by RachelPotteroxo Jan 28th 2007

Where did she get drugs out of Harry Potter? And is it too much to ask to actually read the books?

Posted by kman3124 Jan 28th 2007

I wrote this to that lady: Please, tell me, I do not understand. You havn't even read any of the Harry Potter books, and you claim that it is the reason for drugs, gangs, etc? Harry Potter does not promote things like that, it promotes friendship, loyalty, and courage! Do you think that until children come of age they have no brain? They know what is fiction and what is not. Gangs, drugs, and addiction have been around long before Harry Potter. Harry Potter is a world that can help kids escape peer pressure, the stress of school, and family problems. Removing it from the shelves would remove that santuary and force kids to deal with those troubles 24/7. And another thing, if you plan to remove Harry Potter than you will have to push to remove Eragon, Lord of the Rings, Charlie Bone, and thousands of other books. I know children who have read all of the potter books and their faith has never been stronger. So, please, recant your views. You are wasting your time.

Posted by treb Jan 28th 2007

This lady is so stupid and blind. There has always been violence in america and always will. If she thinks harry potter promotes violence she should read other books that are worse than hp.

Posted by Dylan122792 Jan 28th 2007

ummm... wow this lady needs 2 get real and stop running her mouth. come on.. jkrs books dont promot witchcraft or anything lke that. they are HARMLESS fiction. written entirely for fun. and this lady just wants 2 be in the spotlight for a while. if you dont want your own kids to read them then thats fine like whatever its there loss. but she cant stop other kids from reading them. and as she goes and rambles on about how they are "against our lord jeses" shes never even read one of the books. and so really ho would she know?? she just needs to give it up. i mean how many times has she appealed this case, and how many times has she lost?? she says the books are the #1 most challenged books, but their also the most popular book series prolly ever created. so what do u xpect. SHE WILL NEVER WIN. Harry Potter hype will NEVER and i mean NEVER go away.she gets madd bcuz everyone loves them so mcuh, but she needs 2 get ovr it. if all you do is go around and campaign against books, then you need a life. and she says that shes had people send her there well wishes and stuff, ya umm out of the millions and millions of Harry Potter fans, theres prolly like 3000 people at the most ho feel there so terrible they need b protested against. and if u feel that way, go get over it

Posted by WeasleyIsOurKing Jan 28th 2007

This is crazy. I am a Christian and I like to read. My brother got these books a looooong time ago and I eventually satrted to read them. IT IS JUST FUN READING. "violence, drugs, gangs, addictions, perversions" All of this stuff she said happens in the books is by the bad kids like Dudley and his gangs. You never actually hear the heros doing any of this stuff on purpose. It is self defense most of the time for Harry and all of them. And I have read all the books about 10929385720192 times and I have still to notice any drugs, addictions, and perversions. Violence and gangs are the BAD people doing it and shows us not to do any of it. So there ya go Laura Mallory.

Posted by WeasleyIsOurKing Jan 28th 2007

Oh, and arn't real Christians supposed to be accepting to ALL religions, including Wicca...

Posted by Xyik Jan 28th 2007

she's trying to ban Harry Potter books when there are countless other books and movies about magic/sorcery/witchcraft/ fantasy....she's trying to ban Harry Potter books when there are countless amounts of books, games and movies about gangs, guns, shooting, etc. she's trying to ban Harry Potter books when there hundreds of thousands of people who have been inspired by them. why? For no valid reason. the quotes on her website are a ridiculous and desperate attempt to convince people. If someone were to quote all the posistive comments about Harry Potter and put them on a website like her, there would be millions. Not only is her reasoning and support pathetic, but her website looks like garbage too. If your seriously getting so much support/donations, then at least hire a better website designer. Honestly.

Posted by golfmodel Jan 28th 2007

SHE IS A LOSER. Can she not see that SHE WILL NEVER WIN

Posted by Dissendium Jan 28th 2007

here's what i sent to that lady: Hi. Though I'm sure you have already been contacted by hundreds of other people with this very same subject, I just couldn't stay quiet about this. I was raised in a Catholic home, followed Catholic traditions through out my life, I've been christened, had my first communion, confirmation, the works. Save being a nun and being married (I'm 21 and single), I had all the sacraments Catholic Church says a young girl should have. Nevertheless, I became a Wiccan. Yes, I'm Pagan, but not because of Harry Potter. I was already a Pagan before I started reading the books, and probably so should you read the books. Look, I'm not trying to offend you here, but enough is enough and you medled with somethig much too big for you! Who, in their right minds, could say America was founded on God's laws, when you guys (meaning american settlers)killed thousands of Native Americans? Did God ever say "kill for what you want?" They were there befor the settlers, they were robbed of their livings, of their land, because of the american GREED! Has God ever told you to carry guns? Give your 16 year-old child a gun to protect him in school? Nevertheless, you americans do it, and have been doing it even before Harry Potter ever existed! I'm not offended if other people decide to pray in school, because I believe there's only one God, regardless of the name we give him.But there are people who get very offended if you pray in a different way, or even if you talk about God! You are execising your freedom, by wanting to get prayer back into schools. But what about those other people's freedom? Should they have to pray just ecause you think it's right? Should they have to take their kids out of school? Where do you think your freedom ends and other people's freedom starts? You're campaigning against the books, and using quotes from a father of a Collumbine Massacre victim, but you forget none of the Collumbine attackers read Harry Potter, because Potter hadn...

Has anyone else been leaving rude comments on her site like I have? :D

Posted by Dissendium Jan 28th 2007

(continue from last post) because Potter hadn't even been divulged by then!I'd be ANGRY at you if I was that father from whom you took those words! Those kids killed their colleagues because thy thought it was fun, because they thought it was a GAME!!! Why don't you cruise for a better parent awareness in America? For violent video-games being licensed only for kids from 16 up, the age for which they are appropriate according to the game's maker? That would be worth! But that would be medling with other people's freedom, and with big enterprises and huge mobs, and with thousands of parents who buy those games for their kids in order to keep them quiet and content so they don't have to deal with the kid's whim. Or because that way the kids are kept at home, where they tink they're safe, and a lot more damage is being done! Why don't you cruise about that? I've been beaten up during most of my school education, ever since kindergarden, and always by other kids who didn't read! Are you gonna blame them on Harry Potter? or are you gonna tell I deserverd it because I'm Pagan? Because if you do, you're not any better than the Inquisitors who killed thousands for nothing during the witch-hunt, simply because of their narrow minds and desire to prove themselves right. They killed people who used herbs to cure, just because they knew more than those days doctors did! Do you think that's right? Harry Potter has helped me through those times when I was beaten, helped me to find courage, to see right from wrong, to face school every day, like Hermione did when she was mocked, to seek for the best in every person before I condemn them, to trust, to believe I can make a difference, to take stands for what I believe, it made me find out more of who I am! Those books are a blessing for thousands of kids who don't have a reference from their parents regarding right or wrong, kids from problematic households who have learned through those books the meaning of courage, friendship, love,...

Posted by Dissendium Jan 28th 2007

(continue from last post) righteousness, who became better children and better persons because they try to emulate their heroe's loving heart! In the third book, on the chapter named "Lord Voldemort's servant" (or something similar, since I own the portuguese edition), Harry stopped two men from killing the one who betrayed his parents, therefor killing them! How can that be evil?He did what was right, he decided to take that man to the autorities, so that he could be righteusly punished, he didn't do justice by his own hands like many kids do at school these days! How can you see evil on those books, books that helped dyslexic children to read, that keep the mind of some battered children away from their suffering, that give sick kids strength to keep on fighting against teir diseases, just so the can read a bit more, see a bit more, be a bit more like Harry Potter! I read the things on your website. They are EXTREMELY tendencious, don't give a real view of the books and don't really inform anyone on REAL harms, in case there are any! I'd advise you to READ THE BOOKS before you post any material related to them, and especially before you go into court again. If after that you still wanna do it, fine! But at least you will be able to have a REAL oppinion formed on the books, because you read them! If you had read them, you would know that in those books, love is presented as the stongest power in the world, more powerfull than hate, greed, fear, and even magic. I'd be glad if more people started to believe in this, and started to love more. Cruise for this, for love. Start a battle for people being aware of the benefits of love, not only for themselves, but for everyone around them. maybe if there was more love in the world, love for oneself, love for our fellow man, love for mankind, a love big enough for people to put their selfishness aside and start doing something for those who need, with no other interest in their minds besides the well-being of another ...

Posted by Dissendium Jan 28th 2007

(continue from last post) another person, maybe there wouldn't be so many horrible things on the news, and maybe then Harry Potter wouldn't be necessary, because children wouldn't need to seek for a role-model in a book, they'd have it at home. Please consider this. I'm sure a lot more people would support you, and you surelly wouldn't be getting hate-mail, as you surely are right now. May the great love of the Gods be with you, and may your path be enlightened by truth, love, altruism and intelligence." Finally I finished this ! :D

Posted by golfmodel Jan 28th 2007

ok if she thinks that harry potter is causing all those problems then i have one for her. Why not get rid of the bible, I mean it mentions the devil numerous times an you know that might cause children to become satanists. Totally owned.

Posted by jay4034 Jan 28th 2007

all i know is that i'm a straight A student, with a chance at a scholarship because i write well. i owe this to JK Rowling because shes the person who turned me into a book nerd with her books. after Soccerer's Stone i just thirsted for more and more literature and i started writing my own. now i dont devote my entire life to one woman, there are plenty of other factors, but i do know that my life could have been a lot worse. i grew up surrounded by gangs and violence and drugs and my parents saw my love for academics after reading the Potter series and moved me to a safer place.

Posted by mugwort Jan 28th 2007

I've heard about this, and it is sad that this woman is so relentless. She obvously is driven by fear and not faith. She believes that just by reading Harry Potter, people, especially kids, are being initiated into the occult. There are occult books out there, and as a Christian, I don't recommend them, and I personally believe that to practice what is taught in them is dangerous. But Harry Potter? Give me a break. I grew up watching Disney movies, and reading other fiction in which sorcers and witches were involved, and no one was up in arms about them. Some of you might send this lady a copy of "Looking for God in Harry Potter" by John Granger (last name is coincidental). He is a Christian minister, who also believed that Harry Potter was dangerous, because he was told so, but he did what Mrs. Mallory will not do, he READ the books for himself, and found that the books contain many Christian themes and ideas, that were useful in teaching his children.

How in her idiotic mind did she come up with harry potter contributing to violence gangs and use of drugs??????

Posted by polkadots56 Jan 28th 2007

"violence, drugs, gangs, addictions, perversions" oh gee, because i read harry potter, i just noticed i punch people, do drugs, am involved in one of the biggest gangs in my state, am addicted to certain things, and i have perversions. oh wow. i am kidding by the way :)

I wonder if she'll say something about all the mail she's receiving from all us HP fans... probably not

Perversions?!?!?!?!?!?!?! ?! Another sacastic response --Oh yeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaah hhhhhhhhhhh, I remember that time harry walked into the boys' dormitory and the curtains were drawn around Ron's bed. harry heard a lot of moaning so he went back to the common room. One hour later ron and hermione came down from the dormitory all sweaty... I see when Luara gets her aurguments from. HP is so perverted, and I think it should be banned.-- THIS SHOWS THAT MRS. MALLORY (a.k.a. mrs. malfoy or L. Mall) IS LYING!! A REAL LIFE RITA SKEETER!!!!!!!!

Posted by LindseyBindsey Jan 28th 2007

^ Lol. We should make a list... "Nicknames for Laura Mallory". We already have Mrs. Malfoy, L-Mall, RealLifeRitaSkeeter and Idiot. Anyone want to add to that? Or am I being too mean?

Posted by Nightshade Jan 28th 2007

Okay, so besides not having read the books, having her head up her arse, and blaming all of societies problems on Jo Rowling, she aslo disses wicca? I'm sorry, but the woman is obviously an idiot. I was brought up with an open mind, my mother was good like that and she let me read fiction and I think I've turned out to be a very fair person. If this stupid Mallory woman knew ANYTHING she would know the following; 1 - Harry Potter's deeper storylines are about growing up, love, good triumphing over evil. Magic being just the setting, as all good stories need a setting. 2 - There have been myths, fables, and stories about magic and wizards since before Mallory was even born, does the name Merlin mean anything to anyone? 3 - There have been cracks in society since society began, there have always been criminals and I'm sure there always will be. 4 - You should NEVER force your beliefs onto others, because that would remove other peoples freedom of speech and right to opinion. 5 - The study of Wicca (having studied it myself) isn't all about performing spells. Essentially it is about worshipping nature created by the gods by treating it with respect. Recycling, etc. Some spells are performed, yes, but they are spells to help oneself in their own wellbeing and every day life. 6 - Mallory and others always mix up Wicca and Paganism, because they are stupid. Pagans made blood sacrifices. Wiccas do not.

I think that is humorous that she would talk about how Harry Potter is evil, but has a link to Benny Hinn's website. For those of you not familar with Mr. Hinn he is con artist who uses Christian goodwill to obtain items such as Private Jets, and lives in a house that has seven tennis courts. He has made prophesies such as Fidel Castro will die in the 90's, and earthquake would destroy the eastern part of the United States and so on, by the way none of these prophesies he has made has come true. What is true is that he has been investigated by the IRS for tax fraud, that it is publicly known he uses the donations given for missions to support his family and their extravegant lifestyle. Wow Hypocracy is a great way to prove that you truly care...

Posted by rheanna480 Jan 28th 2007

Hello, I do not understand how this person or the 3000 others (not a big number by the way) can seriously state that Harry Potter is Desensitizing. The news is way worse. I am a christian and born to a minister. I am also a prevarer of science and logic. I know that there is not much real fact to most beliefs but faith is what fuels them all. The basis of there argument is that wicca is bad/evil and that Harry Potter creates "Justification" for the religion. I feel it is a mute point wether Harry Potter justifies/promotes wicca. I know of plenty of other novels in the schools librarys that do so even more. I have even found a complete history of wicca and instructions on how to get started. Seriously if someone thinks that banning these books from school to stop "desensitizing" our youth then the news will need to be blocked along with cartoons and even graphic depictions in the bible its self. In fact lets create a world that does not give anyone a chance to recognize "evil" ( different for all) and only teach that of what the christians believe.... wait a tick.... did we not try that in the past. It did not seem to work to the fact that we all came over to this great country have the freedom to choose what to believe. I can not put any truth in what they say because they are a biased group. Scientifically any thing they say or do in favor of themselfs is not acceptible in the academic comunity. Who says first of all that wicca is evil. I am sure there have been a few bad people that use wicca as an exuse to indulge in already set wrongs. However, I have not done a huge amount of research into the religion but I do have a few friends that do practice Wicca. From explination its more of a phisical thing and puts more empisis on nature than spirits. In fact the christian religion and the bible refere to spirits as much or more than the wiccan religion who put there faith in Nature, feelings, and body. Not to mention that its ok for Jesus to "heal with powers" not HP

Posted by Xyik Jan 28th 2007

I too, have left Ms.Mallory a message regarding her questionable case: I understand that you have your own belief on what is best for children, but have you considered that your talents might not be better elsewhere? You list Harry Potter as a cause for violence, drugs, etc. Although Harry Potter does contain minor themes in which violence or evil is associated, they are underlying themes necessary for story-telling. Just as many classic childrens tales such as Snow White has a villain, so does Harry Potter. But putting this aside, you are right, Harry Potter does contain questionable themes despite the fact that they are miniscule and overlooked by themes of perserverance, love, respect and friendship. I also understand that you have not read the book, perhaps, in fear of insulting God or perharps because it may contradict your viewpoint on the book. However, you should also understand that many Harry Potter fans find your argument and view on the book ridiculous as you have never read it, and as such, are oblivious to the posistive aspects the book brings. You are biased in only acknowledging the negatives of Harry Potter. If fans of Harry Potter were to make a website like yours, promoting every posistive aspect of the book, it would surely be larger. You may however, still have a case, despite how weak it is. I do however, question your judgement on taking a stand against this particular book. There are multiple books and stories about magic and witchcraft, many of them far more accesible and just as popular. Shakespeare's classic Macbeth for example. Lord of the Rings, Eragon, Chronicles of Naria, Wizard of Oz, etc. The list goes on. I question your motives in assaulting this very book out of all the others which contain similar themes. Why not attempt to ban them from libraries as well? Not only do I question the book that you are assaulting, but your belief in the cause for violence, drugs, perversion, etc. There are multiple causes, many of them ...

OH YEAH HOW ABOUT "SHE-WHO-MUST-NOT-BE-NAME D". still thinking of more...

Posted by Nightshade Jan 28th 2007

I must admit, I admire Jo for not verbally attacking hte woman, i'm not sure I should be so patient. I'm writing the second in my own series of books, if I was Jo I would have given the woman a cameo and killed her off. Well done to Jo for taking the mature route and not giving this woman more ammunition for her mid life crisis battle. I'm sure they'll have Mallory back on her medication soon.

Posted by madamtorsion Jan 28th 2007

While I don't think that the series promotes witchcraft or any particular brand of religion, I do find it a little off-putting that people think Wicca or just witchcraft in general is so terribly detrimental.

Posted by mrs_black Jan 28th 2007

Potter is the reason for "violence, drugs, gangs, addictions, perversions" erm.. .. HOW exactly? will this woman give it up!?! IT DOES NOT DO HER OR ANYONE ELSE ANY HARM!!!!! IT IS ONLY A SERIES OF BOOKS! why doesnt she try reading them for a change, and she might see that there is more to the books than witchcraft! Its also about harry's life; always the outcast, and i stress that one of the KEY IDEAS is the importance of LOVE! which is also a very key idea behing the whole of christianity! anyhoo i really shouldnt go on as im saying exactly the same as just about every one else whos read them (which is a LOT of people) so you get the idea!

Posted by GiantSquid Jan 28th 2007

I wonder if she's read the Bill of Rights lately.. let alone Harry Potter

Posted by Topdogpenny Jan 28th 2007

I know, to solve ALL problems, lets just not read . . ever and future generations will just be illiterate instead. cos that is soooooooooo much better than reading a book about magic. JKRowling has caused children to . . .READ!! :O god forbid, we can't let children hav imaginations, that would just be the end of the world! i've just had a good look at the website and it's a load of garbage! and they think that 10yr olds saying they would love to be able to do magic is threatening! of course 10yr olds would love to do magic, doesn't mean they are worshipping satan or forming gangs and taking drugs, it just means they have imaginations, which Laura Mallory seems to lack. every child wishes they could fly, or become invisble and be able to do magic, that doesn't make them evil! please miss mallory, drop it, leave it alone, you can't win

Posted by rheanna480 Jan 28th 2007

I have never read the bible and I believe that it promotes all that is evil. I think we should ban the bible from hotel night stands everywhere because if it is there then it will most definitely turn all travelers into worshipers of all that is unholy and wrong. Who wants to join me in this fight? -signed Sarcastic :)

Posted by Nightshade Jan 28th 2007

Oh god yeah, lets ban it before people start using their imaginations! Or worse! THey might like, learn freedom of speech and opinion! NOOOOO! Stupid woman.

This woman keeps opening her mouth and all I hear is "Blah blah blah I'm a stupid idiot who doesn't now how to not judge a book by its cover blah blah blah." And is there anything she would like to add to that list of hers? Maybe HP is the reason parents hit their kids, or maybe for the Iraqi War?

Posted by Nightshade Jan 28th 2007

You know, I think I heard Hitler mention that Harry Potter was his idol...
