Mallory: I must not quit
For the first time since she embarked on a relentless campaign to remove Potter from Gwinnett county's school libraries in August 2005, Laura Mallory has spoken out in detail about her motives. In a new article, she slams "myths" such as "this is a one-woman fight" and "witchcraft is just harmless fantasy." She writes that young children have been indoctrinated into witchcraft, causing their lives to be ruined. Furthermore, she implies that Potter is the reason for "violence, drugs, gangs, addictions, perversions" in schools nowadays, and that "we need God in America again."

In response to the question, "Do you believe Harry Potter promotes Wicca," JKR replied in a 2001 interview with this: "That's not true. Not once has a child come up to me and said, 'Due to you I've decided to devote my life to the occult.' People underestimate children so hugely. They know it's fiction. When people are arguing from that kind of standpoint, I don't think reason works tremendously well. But I would be surprised if some of them had read the books at all [Mallory hasn't].

"Witches and wizards are a huge part of children's literature; it'll never go away. Hundred years, two hundred years' time there'll be another kind of wizard story."

You can now contact Ms. Mallory at her website. Also, we don't plan to post anything Mallory-related until a verdict of her current case arrives.

Emerson's Comment: Winners never quit and quitters never win. But those who never win and never quit are idiots.

Waitwaitwait... so she's never read the books? Then how can she say all that stuff about promoting witchcraft? Did other people tell her or something? You know, I bet one of her kids gets a full scholarship to that new Harry Potter school they're opening.

Posted by LindseyBindsey Jan 28th 2007

How about "She-who-is an idiot" ?

Posted by Nightshade Jan 28th 2007

More like "Mrs. Demento--- Sorry, Demented."

Posted by chillcat Jan 28th 2007

wooohooooo! GO JKR!!!! OH she said that they probably didn't read it before ever accusing the book oooooo in mallory's face!!

Posted by chica89 Jan 28th 2007

I also went to the site and sent an email. Then I realized I could post it on their blog, so I tried and they said it was being considered. It will be interesting to see if they actually post it because it was very sarcastic. It was also very funny though, everybody should definitely go over there and read some of the stuff they put on their website, it's so crazy! Then post an angry rant and see what happens.

Posted by julietsurvives Jan 28th 2007

It's not about Harry Potter if you really think about it... She's using Harry Potter as an example of 'flaw' - the lack of God - in our school systems. It seems perfectly fine to her because she believes in what she preaches. But she's attempting to indoctrinate ALL children into her religion, which is not only inappropriate - considering that there are many different religions in the world today - but it is also illegal in the terms of associating PUBLIC schools with a [uniform] religion. In her perspective she is fighting for utilitarianism, but from the outside she is encroaching our individual rights. If she feels the need to keep her children 'safe' from 'evils', she should enroll them in a private school. Her method is to "get them while they're young" in the sense of converting people's beliefs because as we have seen the verdict of her last appeal reflected as it would if she were to attempt to convert adults into her beliefs. Now, I believe there is a better way to help the world out, start with joining a group whose cause is more effective and more helpful in todays society such as MADD or DARE - just don't use Harry Potter as a scapegoat.

Posted by LindseyBindsey Jan 28th 2007

She should consider writing stuff for a tabloid magazine or something...

Posted by hpintwense06 Jan 28th 2007

hahaha I love Emerson's comments. They are so insightful. :)

Posted by Nightshade Jan 28th 2007

Mrs Mallorys village called, they're missing their idiot.

Posted by JKRsunkmyship Jan 28th 2007

As a Christian myself, I find her accusations incredibly ridiculous. She's judging not only the HP books, but fans as well, when the Bible clearly says that judgement only belongs to the Lord. Hello lady, every read that passage about not pointing out the speck in my eye before taking the plank out of your own? I encourage everyone to go to her website and contact her.... BUT!!!! Don't just get angry and rant at her, because that will only solidify her belief that we are angry young teens. Be mature and kind and nicely state your opinion. Yelling at her will not convince her that we aren't some heathens.

Posted by hpintwense06 Jan 28th 2007

I totally agree with JKRsunkmyship in writing an angry rant letter to Laura Mallory. It WILL probably just make her think we're even worse than she already thinks we are, if there are mean letters. Not that she hasn't gotten any of those.

Posted by Hedwig Jan 28th 2007

I just feel sorry for the poor Gwinnett County board. ;-) How many times is she allowed to appeal, anyway?

Posted by vshannon Jan 28th 2007

That his word site....was really creepy. So is that gal. The paganization of our youth and country???? I really feel for her child (or children since many fanatics tend to have many children...in hopes that the brainwashing sticks to at least some of them?) and for any children whose parents join her in her crusade.

Posted by MiracleMira Jan 28th 2007

Well said Jo and nice one Emerson. I actually went to Mellorys site and read an article from a woman claming to be a ex-witch it's a laugh you should check it out (if you have 10 minutes to waste). One thing that I did find desturbing is a comment she quoted :"I'd like to go to wizard school and learn magic and put spells on people. I'd make up an ugly spell and then it's pay-back time." Catherine, age 9. Ummm I would advise anyone who knows that kid to watch their back hehe or maybe she was just having a bad day maybe someone at school ofended her or something - children can be cruel but HP is in no way the reason for that on the contrary.

Posted by goodgyal Jan 28th 2007

what an idiot!!!!!!!!! she hasn't read the books how would she know what it does and doesn't promote if she doesn't know what the heck is in it!!!!!!! and a book is made for entertainment purposes gangs and drugs didn't happen after harry potter its been happening what an idiot she won't win...

Posted by radical_dreamer Jan 28th 2007

When will she realize that no one freaking cares what she has to say? Gosh... Freaking idiot! I bet her children reads the HP books behind her back!!! Hahaha when will she ever learn! *gets on broom* Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm "flying" to McDonalds.

Posted by Bzz Jan 28th 2007

Her inbox is going to be overflowing haha. I basically just asked her if she could justify her statement on Harry Potter promoting drugs and gangs. It really is ridiculous..

Posted by Xander_Black Jan 28th 2007

I think it's funny, and kind of ironic. First people complain and complain that kids today don't read enough books, then someone like JK comes along and writes a great series that generates kids interest in reading and makes kids want to read, also the books show children how to deal with hardships of real life. Now that they have a great series that children love to read, someone out there has to ruin it for everyone because they don't agree with it. If you don't agree with it, then don't read it. Don't ruin it for everyone else just because you don't agree with it. For one thing, Harry Potter is NOT the cause of violence like Mallory thinks. My grandmother is christian, and she thinks it's wonderful that I read Harry Potter, cause of it's imagination and also, that it gets me to read. I agree with Calypphire, I think Mallory is just afraid of someone with a little imagination...or imagination in general. She really needs to get a life and stop trying to control others.

Posted by JKRsunkmyship Jan 28th 2007

I would just like to say that in the Christian faith, a sin is a sin, whether it be sorcery, witchcraft, lying, envy, pride, or selfishness. If we are all to follow Mallory's lead, then we should never watch or read anything that isn't perfect. I don't know about you, but I find that slightly difficult.

Posted by ThEdArKlOrd06 Jan 28th 2007

When is she going to give it a rest?the books don't say:'gee, you should be a witch/wizard' I'm 12 now, I've been reading Harry Potter since I was, like, 8 or 9, and not once have I ever thought that the books were telling me to become Wicca.

Posted by SomebodyElse Jan 28th 2007

Were I a parent, (which I'm not), my kids reading a book about witches and wizards who fight evil and intolerance would not really bother me all that much. And kids aren't stupid. If they're old enough to read, get through, and understand the Harry Potter books, I think they're probably old enough to know or to be explained to that magic isn't real, at the very least. JKRsunkmyship: I agree with you. We ought to respond to Mrs. Mallory in a calm, dignified way, otherwise she'll just say, "See? Look how HP fans act!" And also, kids misbehaved in school WAY before Harry Potter came out. Can someone please explain to me why everyone keeps saying Harry Potter encourages drug use? It doesn't. When have they ever used drugs?

Posted by moonyrocks Jan 28th 2007

thanks for the website i wrote her a note. i concluded it with "Read the book Ms Mallory, no one will call you a hypocrite because unfortunately they are too busy call you an idiot". Which is so true i forgot which newspaper named her idiot of the year otherwise i wouldve provided a link.

Posted by goodgyal Jan 28th 2007

love emmerson's comment btw

Posted by SomebodyElse Jan 28th 2007

Also, the Bible forbids worshipping other gods. Does this making reading old books of Greek and Roman myths wrong for a Christian (or Jew or Muslim or any other monotheistic religion or religion that doesn't believe the classical gods to be real) to do? As long as you don't believe them, I'd say no. And if kids want to do magic: sit down with them, explain that you can't, that it's just a story, and (if you're religious) God's the only one who can control the universe that way. Also: on her website, she quotes Voldemort about possessing Quirrell and says this is demon possession. Yes, of COURSE it's possession. But Voldemort is evil. I don't see, therefore, how it could be promoting demon possession, as it is really condemning this sort of thing.

I think you guys will get a kick out of the message i sent this lady in the comments section of her website: You sad and feeble woman. One can only imagine the utter humiliation your children must experience day in and out knowing their mother is viler than bubotuber puss. Up until I read about you, I never would have believed someone could be more of a toad then Dolores Jane Umbridge herself. Thank you for proving truth is indeed stranger then fiction. Is it hard to be more PATHETIC then a flobberworm? I guess if you were in therapy (which by the way you clearly need) they would be uncovering horrible childhood tales of finding gillyweed in your oatmeal, or troll abuse, or receiving stink pellets for Christmas. I might even wonder if you were wronged by an old broomstick, but I won’t go there. Maybe you just have too much time on your hands. When I have extra time, I like to read. I know my most favorite book series is off the list, so how about some of these other fine selections? Blood Brothers: My life amongst the vampires Charm You Own Cheese Encyclopedia of Toadstools (this one is right up your alley) Men Who Love Dragons Too Much Unfogging the Future Weird Wizarding Dilemmas and Their Solutions And finally Year with a Yeti I must say, as a current law student, I am personally looking forward to your upcoming trial. My only complaint is that our legal system is not perfect. For example, it will not make you pay the cost of wasted tax dollars you are going to spend in this little escapade nor will it allow a judge to give you a mandatory sentence requiring you to read all 6 books cover to cover. If it would, I would be happier then a centaur at the Planetarium. Nonetheless maybe I will send you some Cockroach Clusters and Bertie Bott’s Every Flavor Beans for you in celebration of your probable loss in court. My personal favorite flavor Bertie Bott’s are cherry and grass, but I think vomit or rotten egg is more your type. Too ...

Posted by moonyrocks Jan 28th 2007

i love it but she wont im sure. she'll think you're an angry teen and that all hp fans are angry teens cuz we read the books. but i still love the note so dont think im against you becuz that obviously took a lot of thought. though i do think a centaur would be more critical of a planetarium.

Posted by 5thMarauder Jan 28th 2007

She goes on and on about how kids want to become witches and wizards after reading Harry Potter, and I have to admit I did when I first read it. I quickly changed my mind when I found out that real witchcraft is nothing like the stuff in Harry Potter, and I expect that most children, too, would be deterred by that fact because they would soon realise that they would not be able to wave a wand and make someone break out in boils. The magic in Harry Potter is too different from real life witchcraft to have any correlation. There was an article on her website from a "former witch" claiming that the books detail real wiccan practices, and to her I have this to say: "do you even exist, or are you a figment of Laura Mallory's imagination to rally supporters?" because, really, I've read Harry Potter far more often than is healthy and I've read about real witchcraft (yes, I know that reading stuff isn't everything) and for starters phoenixes, dragons and unicorns don't exist, and they're fundamental in Rowling's world. On that train of thought (that mallory's making stuff up) she might want to read the Ninth Commandment (the one about not lying) ... wait, apparently she can't read because if she could she would have read Harry Potter before starting this crusade against it.

Posted by htidepotter Jan 28th 2007

mooney, now that i think of it they would. Mans recreation of the stars would psst them off i think. Although this loon that i sent it too, wont know the difference. I do however think she has many umbridge like qualities.

Posted by SomebodyElse Jan 28th 2007

5thMarauder: good point. Wicca is an actual religion with actual rules, and the witchcraft in HP is more like science, really. Apparently they (Laura Mallory and Co.) seem to think that the books are prejudiced against Muggles. Sure, they poke some fun at them, but as for hardline discrimination--well, if you consider J. K. Rowling's views to be expressed through Lucius Malfoy, maybe. Note to Laura, if you happen to be reading this: Don't tell us "Lucius" sounds like "Lucifer" and this is because J. K. Rowling is a Satanist. It is because Lucius is an eivl character.

Posted by amara Jan 28th 2007

htidepotter- you've probably just proved her point.

Posted by jkrfan211 Jan 28th 2007

All that website is, is article after article slamming Harry Potter. It's presented as a Christian website (which I have nothing against, being a Christian myself), but it has nothing except reasons why Harry Potter is bad. And since she hasn't read the books, she is the last person to be able to properly judge the books. Period. The end. You can't judge something that you haven't read or seen. It's just that simple. But if she wishes to continue wasting her time and money and making a fool of herself, by all means. It isn't going to change anything or do any good though. Oh, how I'd love to have a debate with that woman.

Posted by loony_luna_lovegood Jan 28th 2007

Ahaha, oh my gosh she's nuts.

Posted by deathcabforcutie Jan 28th 2007

i wrote to her. i hope she actually reads our opinions. i respect her views on life and i mean she can believe what ever she wants, but i wont respect her outlook on hp i mean she hasnt read them. stupid girl lol

Posted by DondaLonda Jan 28th 2007

Ok, so seriously, I was offended just as much as the next HP fan and being a Christian I found her views ridiculous but having read a bit more and having thought a bit more I realised that she just wants to control what her children have access to! She's not trying to take it out of bookstores or public libraries but out of her small school library as it is small and the less option of books the more likelihood of her children reading it and the less control she has over something she doesn't want her children to read. The media, people, the media loves a story and this one is JUICY! She doesn't say no one should be allowed to read it. Though having said all that I must say I find her claims of it being evil offensive. It's not a children's book but that doesn't make it evil. Maybe an age limit should be put on it. (of course if kids are more mature their parents could let them read it). But seriously, sometimes Christians just get it wrong. My parents used to never let me watch the Simpsons ("won't have that rubbish on in my household!") but now my dad makes me turn it over to the simpsons!!

Posted by Eclipse Jan 28th 2007

Wait, I thought it was the Jews that caused all the problems in the world? Oh yeah, that was another raving lunatic.------ This woman can think whatever she wants, but the fact that she's challenging the freedom of religion in this country really grates me.

Posted by DracoSecretlyLovesMe Jan 28th 2007

That Emerson always knows just what to say. Haha. Ms. Mallory doesn't know what she's talking about. How can Harry Potter want to make people do witchcraft? Wicca and HP magic are very different. I get what she means about how we need God in the U.S., but eliminating Harry Potter isn't going to do that.

Posted by Gisela Jan 28th 2007

emersons comment is great... lol

Posted by RKRK1313 Jan 28th 2007

Yeah Laura Mallory actually, to me, reminds me of Hitler in a way. I'm not gonna accuse her of being as bad as Hitler because I don't think a claim like that should be made about people so carelessly. But certain things she has said have brought Hitler to mind. She is basically saying there isn't God in schools anymore and we need to revive His presence within them once again. She is saying that Harry Potter is the cause of this. She is trying to keep her kids from reading them... but in the process is hindering others choice to read them as well. Basically she doesn't want people to read them because she is insecure in her Christian faith and believes that, as a result, kids will read Harry Potter and turn against God and become practitioners of the Wiccan religion. First of all there is nothing wrong with that, because, after all, we do live in the U.S. where people can believe and choose whatever they want.. but also she is afraid of ideas, imagination. As a result? She wants the books removed. That is just a polite version of orchestrating a book burning. She doesn't want the information out there so she wants the books removed. The crazy thing is, is the fact that the books don't even promote the evil things she has claimed in first place.

Posted by hpintwense06 Jan 28th 2007

The fact of the matter is that certain people will not read the Harry Potter series because it either does not interest them or it is not something they feel they should be reading, and that is perfectly fine! But when you go on to say that reading the books causes evil to those who do, it is going too far. I had a friend who wouldn't read the Harry Potter books for a very long time, simply because she didn't want to. Now, years later, she does read them. Heck, I didn't want to read the series at first, but I did and fell in love! If anything, the most it has done to me is made me love reading and given me better reading skills and use of vocabulary. That may sound a bit cheesey, but it's true. Sure my friends and I would make forts and pretend we were at Hogwarts when we were younger, but I think that is all part of having an imagination - but knowing that it is not real. Even if Potter hadn't been written, there would still be "evil" things happening in the world. People can make their own choices in what they read!

Posted by fi_the_fairynymph Jan 28th 2007

someone said the exodus quote about not allowing sorcerers to live is on mrs mallory's website... firstly, does she also stone adulterous women to death?? and secondly- its a BOOK! fictional! it's not a witch recruitment tool!!

Posted by PoisonedDoxy Jan 28th 2007

hey can i just say sumthing here i dont believe in God and i know noone who does so im probably completely wrong here but who cares; didnt God or Jesus use magic???????????????? a mean he cured the blind and moved great big flipping rocks ??

Posted by fi_the_fairynymph Jan 28th 2007

what IS magic anyway?? now theres a debate. what God does is use his power- seeing as he created everything, he can do anything. so normal rules of human existance dont apply to him. watch the matrix, it probably explains it better...

Posted by headlessseth Jan 28th 2007

i just told her to halt her breathing indefinately.

Posted by headlessseth Jan 28th 2007

i also told her: Poor Ms. Mallory. Your concept of evil is utter nonsense. I believe in God and our Lord Jesus Christ. But the fact of the matter is these books promote friendship and belief in the greater good. Children know they're fanstasy, for they're in the fantasy section. Furthermore, to be classified as Wiccan in origin, it must be of a polytheistic nature. Not one reference is made in the books to worship of anykind let alone to multiple gods. I know for I've actually read them. In fact their are several references to the one God in the book, and not at all of a derogatory nature. Knowledge is power, we know, so don't be ignorant.

Posted by HPROCKS8 Jan 28th 2007

OK BEFORE HARRY POTTER CAME OUT KIDS WERE DOING DRUGS AND STUFF AND HARRY POTTER DOESN'T EVEN HAVE ANYTHING ABOUT DRUGS IN THE BOOKS ANYWAYS!THIS WOMAN IS AN IDIOT AND SHE DOESNT KNOW WHAT THE HECK SHES TALKING ABOUT! SHE CAN'T STOP ANYONE FROM READING HARRY POTTER BOOKS. ALL THIS IS DOING IS PROBABLY EDGING PEOPLE TO READ THE BOOKS MORE. WHATEVER! HP ROCKS!!!

Posted by Slytherin_vs_Hufflepuff Jan 28th 2007

I posted her website again. I plan on continuing to do so. This time, I copied it into Word to print, and it was two pages. Mwhaha. I'm copying it cos we HP fans *must* unite- seriously. But we already are, no? Message: Ms. Laura Mallory et. al, Okay, now this got me quite peeved as I browsed you're site: “See what I have become,” the face said “mere shadow and vapor. I have form only when I can share another’s body. But there have always been those willing to let me into their hearts and minds. Unicorn blood has strengthened me these past weeks.” (This clearly is demon possession, and nothing less.) It is partially true, although cutting off a quote in the middle of it? If you'd actually bothered to *read* the book, you'd know that the face was Voldemort, who was pocessing Quirrell. When Voldemort ordered Quirrel to "seize the boy!", the protection Harry had kicked in. Voldemort/Quirrell, both being evil and meaning harm to Harry, were attatcked by said protection, which summed up simply, was the love a mother has for a child, that never dies, even in death. As told in the books, the protection is an ancient magic, that can only be done through love. When Voldemort turned his wand on Lily Potter, and she begged for Voldemort to kill her and spare her son (Harry), she envoked an ancient blood magic that protected Harry as long as he lived with blood relatives of his mother (his Aunt Petunia, her husband, and son) and considered their place home. Now, I am a devot Christian, and have spent many summers at a very well-known Christian summer camp in Wisconsin (Camp Timber-Lee). I went one summer just after a book release (I believe the fifth book), and so many people had HP books with them! Counselors too! And our town has one of the best high school's academically, musically, and sports-wise in the country and state. Our music department is well-known throguhout Illinois. Have you ever heard of Bands of America, or BoA? It's a very prestigous mus...

I don't even care anymore. Shes just an attention seeking idiot to put it in polite words. the longer she drags this out, the more people and children will read Harry! THe part about gangs does amuse me slgithly. Since Harry Potter is full of gangs and such, and thats the focus of the book and all. Methinks that the gangs influce comes from oh I dunno, TV, video games, and sadly bordeom. My final words: Read the books and stop repeately running into the glass door.
