Mallory: I must not quit
For the first time since she embarked on a relentless campaign to remove Potter from Gwinnett county's school libraries in August 2005, Laura Mallory has spoken out in detail about her motives. In a new article, she slams "myths" such as "this is a one-woman fight" and "witchcraft is just harmless fantasy." She writes that young children have been indoctrinated into witchcraft, causing their lives to be ruined. Furthermore, she implies that Potter is the reason for "violence, drugs, gangs, addictions, perversions" in schools nowadays, and that "we need God in America again."

In response to the question, "Do you believe Harry Potter promotes Wicca," JKR replied in a 2001 interview with this: "That's not true. Not once has a child come up to me and said, 'Due to you I've decided to devote my life to the occult.' People underestimate children so hugely. They know it's fiction. When people are arguing from that kind of standpoint, I don't think reason works tremendously well. But I would be surprised if some of them had read the books at all [Mallory hasn't].

"Witches and wizards are a huge part of children's literature; it'll never go away. Hundred years, two hundred years' time there'll be another kind of wizard story."

You can now contact Ms. Mallory at her website. Also, we don't plan to post anything Mallory-related until a verdict of her current case arrives.

Emerson's Comment: Winners never quit and quitters never win. But those who never win and never quit are idiots.

Emerson's comment summed it up. That website is such a waste of space, and I must say that as a Christian I'm embarrassed. Yes, the HP books are set at a school for wizards, but a lot of the situations that the characters face can be found ANYWHERE ... but of course, the woman hasn't read the books, so she wouldn't know that. =/ I really feel sorry for her kids...

WHY ARE WE STILL TALKING ABOUT THIS WOMAN!? I DON'T CARE ABOUT HER! I WANT MY RELEASE DATE! SHE WILL NEVER STOP US! WE WILL ALWAYS WIN!....................M Y CAPS-LOCK BUTTON IS JAMMED.

Teacher: Ok children, are we ready? Children: Yes! Teacher: 1,2,3!!! Everyone: DELUSIONAL! I swear, I'm getting sick of her. Yeah, understand why she's trying to get rid of HP but she fighting a losing battle! The day that she succeeds is the day that I'm going to...*sigh*...nevermind Thank you Emerson for your words of insight. You have spoken the truth. Once again proves that people in Indiana rock the socks of America. WHOOT!

music confrence (for lack of a better term), and only 10 bands in the entire US are chosen. Our top band, Wind Ensemble, was chosen to perform, and are doing so in March. There are around four Catholic schools in my town. Yet the release parties for the books and movies is huge, even within a mostly-Christian and Catholic community. I ask you this- how can you judge a book simply by its rumoured content? There *is* violence, but good always triumphs. It's about love, family, friendship, and good morals. But it does something very few books do. It shows the bad side of human nature that many deny. With Voldemort, the Death Eaters, and all the people out to get Harry, it shows that life isn't all sunshine and daises, there are hardships. And life is cruel. I admire JK Rowling for stepping up, and showing both the good and bad sides of humans. There are many hardships in the books, but they are greatly outweighed by the happy times. And true, the books are getting darker. But any die-hard fan since the beginning (I started reading HP&SS in third grade, and I'm now sixteen) has known this was coming. And we wonder who will die next. First- Lily and James Potter. Second- Prof. Quirrel. Third- Frank Bryce. Fourth- Cedric Diggory. Fifth- Sirius Black (RIP, Padfoot). Sixth- our beloved Albus Dumbledore. It's seems unavoiable that more are to die, but everyone *will* die. And how in Merlin's name do the books promote "violence, drugs, gangs, addictions, perversions". Violence- how? People are waving wands and shouting (in Latin) at each other. The occasional scuffle (in the first book) or slaps (Hermion slapping Malfoy in the third book after an insult). Shouldn't you try to ban some video games and movies instead? Drugs- where on earth are there drugs in the books?! Although many fans refer to themselves as "Potter heads", some jokingly shorten it to "PottHeads." It'a simply a joke, nothing more. Gangs- there aren't any gangs (like we see in NYC or Chicago ...

I don't know what gets more annoying about people like her. There's those who are trying to get good liturature banned and then those who are trying to ban teaching about the Big Bang theories. I am Christian and a Harry Potter fan. Before long she'll be after other things. TKAMB, Macbeth, Wizard of Oz, Star Wars, ect. Is there not a constitution saying we can read whatever the yell we want? Just incase she ever reads this I want her to know I love Yugioh, I play pokemon, I believe in evolution and the big bang, I love Stafr Wars [She might think 'The Force' is witchcraft], oh and I love Harry potter. I'd continued, but I gotta go.

WOW....She will never give up...in 25 years this woman will still be fighting!!! I pity her on so many levals...I hope she finds Jesus....

Posted by christianaeg Jan 28th 2007

Great comment emerson!!! *standing ovation*

Posted by gandalfxj9 Jan 28th 2007

I don't really like his comment...he probobly spent like 3 hours coming up with it!!! Am i right?

Posted by fire_whiskey Jan 28th 2007

exactly, emerson, EXACTLY! *laughs VERY VERY hard* this woman...is an idiot. i am a christian, and i love Harry Potter...how many times must i say that? she is giving us all a bad name! please, PLEASE don't you non-christian people believe all of us are like this!! a lot of the kids at my church love Harry Potter and i don't think i've ever met another christian who was all 'grr harry potter because its evil' besides ms. mallory. :P JK Rowling is a member of the Church of Scotland...so let's see...she wouldn't be teaching kids about worshiping satan! *duh*

Posted by kkatid Jan 28th 2007

wow. she even contradicts herself. "open our blind eyes and deaf ears" wow. she is oblivious

Posted by pbtan93 Jan 28th 2007

Look, she's not getting the point. She's not just taking away Harry Potter from the Christian Community, she's taking it away from people who do need it. And if she's read the books, paid attention to the actual cause of everything she blames Harry Potter on, she'd stop. And besides, Harry is worldwide. She's looking for a scapegoat for all of those things, and one scapegoat that will give her fame.

Posted by DracoSecretlyLovesMe Jan 28th 2007

PoisonedDoxy: No, Jesus doesn't use magic. He gets his power from God, who can do whatever He wants to because He's God. Maybe Laura Mallory needs a rainy day + a Harry Potter book + comfy chair + hot chocolate. Then she will see the magic.

Ok, I didn't read all the comments, so I'm not sure if anyone else noticed this, but go to her website. Then, first go to About Us, then Testimonies. You get something saying this page is under construction. You get that same "under construction" message if you go to Resources, then books. And what is even more interesting, is if you go to Resources, Support. You get a cheery message saying, Page Not Found. Hmm... sound odd to anyone else? The only pages that might have anything actually supporting her are mysteriously unaccessable. But what bugged me the most about her site was the articles, quotes section. The last two on that page are about these two teenagers in Michigan searching for people to join there covens. First of all, what on earth does this have to do with HP!? They never even mention HP in their searches at all!!!!! Plus, when has there ever been mention of covens in HP?? Now she got these searches off the internet, so she never actually met these two teens. It's totally possible that they have never even looked at an HP book in their lives, and that they chose to do this all on their own. Also, about three quotes up from those is a group of quotes from kids about why they like HP. Many of them mention how they would like to learn spells to get back at people who have wronged them. I have freinds who I know for a fact don't like HP, yet last time I checked, they wouldn't have objected to learning spells to get back at people who have hurt them.

Posted by crazyhpgirl Jan 28th 2007

When is she going to give up? And what’s this crap about HP causing drugs, violence, etc. to increase in schools? I can’t believe her. Thanks to HP, more kids are reading rather than joining gangs and doing drugs. If anything, a rise in such problems probably stems from the home, not reading materials. HP promotes imagination and creativity, not violence and drugs.

Posted by LindaW Jan 28th 2007

Until she reads the books, and can find evidence ANYWHERE in them of a quote or ANYTHING that says "hey, small kids- go practice witchcraft" I fail to see any purpose in this woman's attempts at censorship.

Posted by ej020506 Jan 28th 2007

this woman is unbelivale...unbelievably stupid that is...why dont she read the book first then judge it? oh, yes, i bet she cant read either....

Posted by Jimmer Jan 28th 2007

I think that only about one out of every 149,222,107 support Mallory. There's 298,444,215 people the U.S. So about two people support Mallory in the U.S. Herself and her Husband. I bet not even her church supports her. Luna, meet your mom.

Posted by mandi Jan 28th 2007

i left her a question saying that she should read the books first. maybe then people will take her seriously (highly unlikely...)

Posted by 98m57w62 Jan 28th 2007

Ok, so I got super annoyed and went into a major rant, and actually ran out of room, so here’s the rest of my rant, continuing from where I left off before. About two up from the one with the kid’s quotes is one listing several names that from HP that are, according to an ex-witch, names of real deamons. Now I can't say anything for Slytherin or Azkaban, but as for the others, well now. First off is Circe. I may have missed it, but when was Circe mentioned in the HP series? Next is Draco, which I believe Jo used since it means Dragon, not because it's a deamon. Next up we have Hermes. In HP, Hermes is Percy's owl, a messenger. In Greek mythology, Hermes is the messenger of the gods. I believe that this is where Jo got the name from, not some random deamon. And last off we have Erised. Any person who has actually read the books would know that this is the word Desire backwards, not some odd occult reference. But I suppose you all aren’t the ones who need to hear this. Maybe I’ll go send a message to Ms. Mallory. And being Catholic, not at all a witchcraft convert, I will pray to God that she actually receive and read my message.

Posted by LindaW Jan 28th 2007

"Hi. I'd like to know exactly what the heck these "donations" you're accepting are for. It seems to me as if you are promoting God by making an appeal on Harry Potter books. So, all I can see that would need money in this situation would be if you were paying off the board that makes the decision, or using the money yourself. Jee, I can totally see how this supports God." that would be what i wrote. oh, and i also wrote a comment that was abot 10 pages long about the books, but i won't bore you with that.

Posted by msmandi90 Jan 28th 2007

this is what i wrote to her: This is in regards to the comments about Harry Potter made by the miss Laura Mallory. I can understand that your religion conflicts with the idea of witchcraft, and that you are against the concept of other religions. But, as a person that sees both sides to the situation before making a remark, I cannot understand where you are coming from relating it to the occult (mainly Wicca) and drugs in the world today. Wicca is a religion based on nature and, just as Christianity was made to be, was a way to explain in simple terms how the world was created. It is much, much, MUCH older than Christianity and there are even connections between Christianity and the holidays of Wicca. (Easter, the date of Christ's birth, All Saint's Day, All Soul's Day ...) Harry Potter (or HP for time's sake), on the other hand, is a series based on the battle of good and evil, with made up words, or words coming from latin, to create a "spell." It is stated quite clearly that it has nothing to do with the real religious counterparts known as "witchcraft" and contains no factual statements. Also, to say that HP is the cause for "violence, drugs, gangs, addictions, perversions" in this day and age is an out-and-out lie with no way to support said statement. How can this series be a cause of so many things when, for one thing, the majority of the people involved in those actions don't read the series and the problems were there before the series was even in existance? The causes for "violence, drugs, gangs, addictions, perversions" is up to the person involved in them. I, as a teenager in today's world without God, made a choice to not have a god at this point in my life, and I don't see any reason that HP made me that way. In fact, now that I actually think that through, I chose not to believe even BEFORE the series came out. So, please explain, how could forcing "God in America" stop me, and many others all around the world, from reading the series? Oh, before...

Posted by Xindaeltal Jan 28th 2007

Alright, calm down everyone, I'm going to write her a nice intellectual letter to her and hopefully start some kind of dialog. Anger isn't a productive response to anything. Owl me with your loving comments. :-D

Posted by pdaervo Jan 28th 2007

This lady makes absolutely no sense; she says that the books promote Wicca without reading them and then tries to ban them. Never have I heard of them promoting Wicca in any shape or form, unless she means children drssing up as Harry Potter for Halloween. Of course they also dress up as witches for Halloween so I dont understand why she doesn't try to ban the holiday itself. If she truly beleives that Harry Potter promotes Wicca then she can teach that to her kids, but what right does she have to ban it in an entire community. Is it illegal to practice Wicca, NO, then why should it be banned. There are plany of books out there that encourage different religions, including her religion. If she feels the need to ban Harry Potter, then why can't other poeple try to ban books that are ACTUALLY centered around religion. Children are not forced to read Harry Potter. If she truly beleivves in her cause then why does she attack Harry Potter, rather than something along the lines of William Shakespeare's Macbeth, which actually includes fairly accurate Wiccan traditions and is ususally taught in school. Now don't get me wrong, I LOVE Shakespeare and Macbeth, but Malloy's logic is disillusioned.

Posted by Skram1113 Jan 28th 2007

Honestly, this is the funniest thing ever. Originally I was "rather annoyed"with this woman, but now I find her flat out entertaining.

Posted by jay4034 Jan 28th 2007

Xindaeltal, I'm sure there are plenty of people (myself included) who have written well-organized, intellectual letters to this woman. I'm not sure what she hopes to gain at the end of the day here, but she's not going to win. Stupidity usually annoys me but in Mallory's case it rather amuses me. She's so misinformed its almost scary. Oh well. I'm going to walk to her house dressed in Hogwarts robes and say in a creepy voice, "Join us Ms. Mallory, join us." I'll probably be shot or burned at the stake. In all seriousness, I personally won't hold this lady in any kind of high regard until she reads the books. Then I'll waste my time listening to her "highly logical arguments." Oh yeah, one more thing, one of the sponsors of her website is insane. Seriously they're trying to recruit young teens and children for their "war" against what they deem inappropriate. Basically anything that involves free will or creativity is bad to them.

Posted by dobbyroxmysox Jan 28th 2007

HAHA wow....some people(such as mallory) just never really see the light

Posted by ReallyTired Jan 28th 2007

I wish people would stop trying to use this space to push their political and religious (or "lack thereof") sentiments at us readers. The entire reason why Mallory is fighting is because she thinks there is some connection between HP and wicca or demon-worship. It's obvious to all of us who have read the book that there isn't, so her accusations are completely unfounded. Most likely the only thing triggering her response is the stigma surrounding the word "witch." In the end, the books are secular (secular: not supporting or fighting any particular religion), so saying that you are or are not a Christian or believe in the separation of church and state is pointless.

Posted by 98m57w62 Jan 28th 2007

Ok, well I wrote to her, a nice, kind, professional, intellectaul letter. Unilke the comments I poster here, I did not get angry in anyway, and even mentioned the Bible. I know it sounds cheesy, but hey, it may just be what get's me a response. I just hope she actually reads mine, it'll do her some good. I explained how HP saved me this year, and gave her 4 real life examples, including myself, of crazed HP fans who are some of the greatest, people I know. And I know them from CAtholic school. That's gotta earn me some points right?

Posted by Junigatsu Jan 28th 2007

She's wasting her time. I'm with Skram.. she's just entertaining now.

Posted by Audura Jan 28th 2007

I can't believe she's still on the campain trail! I went to her site and sent her a letter using some quotes from one of the articles about how Harry Potter caused a dangerous rise in witchcraft and asked in my letter how a good christian could judge a book without even opening the cover! I was very nice about it but I'm so sick of people judging things without even knowing them!

Posted by Audura Jan 28th 2007

Way to go 98m57w62!!! You rock for being so professional about it ^_^ ( I tryed to be professional in my letter but I did get a bit angry at times. lol)

Posted by love2laugh_asma Jan 28th 2007

I think mallory just wants to get famous. I mean, what is the woman thinking.

Posted by empirexstate Jan 28th 2007

Wise words, Emerson, wise words. This woman is f-ing psychotic.

Posted by Jolly_Roger Jan 28th 2007

To those posting on that crackhead's website: don't post jokes about how you joined a cult and shoot up drugs because of Harry Potter. While WE know you're kidding, this Mallory woman is seriously delusional and will only use your comments to her advantage. Don't encourage her. If you're going to post on her site, keep it informative and prove to her that we're not as stupid as she claims. Acting like a sarcastic idiot just to taunt her will only fuel the fire. On another note, why doesn't she go pick on The Wizard of Oz for a change?

Posted by sweetest_decline Jan 28th 2007

I suppose she doesnt let her kids watch sesame street because of The Count. How can you blame school shootings on harry potter, the first one is dated decades before his birth. I suppose we can blame him for the death of christ too.

Posted by GrownUpChick Jan 28th 2007

Dear Laura: There are more of us than there are of you. Read the books or shut up! Enough said.

Posted by toomanycanarycreams Jan 29th 2007

So I...um...read the books and really enjoyed the whole...um...love, friendship, loyalty thing going on and the, you know, stuff about defeating evil by staying true to what you believe in and I...um discovered I wanted to, you know, be a good friend and work hard at stuff and I even thought about reading some other books, you know, like Shakespeare and stuff.......then I went to Laura Mallory's site and ...um it traumatised me so much that I had to go and...um...find someone to give me a cigarette, you know, just to get over the shock of seeing the rubbish she wrote. And then...um the gang I got the cigarette from showed me some other drugs and stuff, and then we kicked someones teddy bear. I asked the gang if they had ever read Harry Potter cos I thought maybe, you know they, could um, maybe, you know learn from the books how to be good, decent, citizens and they said nope, they'd never read them. Then I asked well, guys, you know, this Mallory site really disturbed me and um that's what made me come out and hang with you guys in your gang of violence and drugs and perversions. I asked had they read it an they said, "don't you get it dude, we can't read." Mallory, I'm being sarcastic btw :0)

Posted by cfish Jan 29th 2007

I've just visited her website, so for all of those who need your souls saved you need to look no further. For the rest, can you say "lunacy"... Together now, boys and girls nice and loud! LU NA CY

Posted by Zeitgeist Jan 29th 2007

omg! this expalains *everything* The"violence, drugs, gangs, addictions, perversions" in my life. thank you Laura Mallory~~that is what we call sarcasm (it is a noun). this is idiotic now. I would feel less insulted if she would at least *READ* (it's a verb) the books. give it up lady.

Posted by mama Jan 29th 2007

I think I figure it out! She is worried that if kids practice spells, it might actually work! And somebody would turn her into an idiot! (OOps to late!). Anyway, maybe we should all pray for her, so one day she will see how stupid she is. Or maybe that would be to cruel...

Posted by AnyaMarcos Jan 29th 2007

See people, this is why I am so scared of Christianity. If people like this woman gain control, they will make this country a Theocracy. If you want to see some good world examples of how good theocracies are, just look at any country in the Middle East. That is what will happen to the USA if the Conservative Christians have their way.

Posted by fi_the_fairynymph Jan 29th 2007

i just read her "myths and truths" section... neither the myths or the truths seem to be true!! this is the most ridiculous argument ive seen since people tried to sue macdonalds for making them fat! im sorry, but i dont see how God would want her to get books banned from classrooms... i mean, maybe he's telling her to encourage more prayer and Bible readings in classrooms, and i think thats fair enough cos reading from the Bible means that the kids learn about Jesus and religion and can make an informed decision whether they want to follow christianity themselves (well, kids should learn about all religions) but banning stuff is just a gross injustice when it comes to freedom of speech and choice. and then theres the fact that there are hundreds and hundreds of fantasy books out there and she isnt pushing to get those banned... and a lot of them have really graphic sex scenes in too so surely theyr a lot more inappropriate? and when she says stuff about "age-appropriateness" she really doesnt give kids the credit they deserve, i mean she sounds like one of those crazy mothers that way overprotects her kids and doesnt let them live properly! and dont get me started on the "traditional Judeo-Christian roots upon which our blessed country was founded" your country was founded by the english! we had a king who changed his religion to suit his remarriages, we had a load of "christians" enslaving thousands of people, oh and taking them to america where other "christians" treated them like animals! traditional?? try moving where God is moving and thats towards the future!! my goodness conservatives irritate me! oh and then theres the most important thing- its a FICTIONAL BOOK!! its all made up! how can that be indoctrinating kids? indoctrinating them into something that isnt real?? HUH??

Posted by TurnerClassic Jan 29th 2007

Maybe she should take Hamlet out of schools, and all the other classics that refer to witches, why just Harry Potter. That woman has way to much time on her hands.

Posted by alien Jan 29th 2007

laura is the most idiotic person i have ever met. lets listen to what hp people say about this:ron say" the old hag, she's sick". hermione says" you are the most insensitive wart i have ever had the misfortune to meet". and i am saying " laura you better read the book"

Posted by Hogwarts_Grad Jan 29th 2007

First I feel like I have to apologize for this woman. I am a Christan whose father is a Pastor and we are both Huge HP fans and this woman is making Christians every where look like nutters. There are so many bad things out there that need to be handled why attack a book. I guess because it can't fight back. This Mallory woman has forgot the man princple of being a Christian and that's LOVE and that is one thing Harry Potter has. Its his power the ablity to love. This woman needs to get a life or a real cause to fight. Is she serious Harry Potter causes gangs well if she means book clubs then I guess I am a gang banger. If you go to her website she has taking so many quotes from Jo and the Hp books out of context its sad Again I am sorry I hope you don't all think Christians are like this because we are not

Posted by toomanycanarycreams Jan 29th 2007

Hogwarts_grad : I hope people know this is not typical of anyone who is religious, yes there are small factions of extremists in everything - even Harry Potter, yes really, people who believe that anyone who doesn't like HP is nuts! Anyway, I would hope that we all know this is one small minority who have just gone looooopy and not really typical of christians out there! Everyone is entitled to an opinion of course even if it's founded on frootloops and not commonsense LOL! However, Laura 'Umbrudge' Mallory does seem to be keen to convert us all...hmm, that's creepy. Is there a website or blog anywhere that expains the HP series and it's themes of love, courage etc? Might be worth letting Mallory know about it. I might set up a blog actually. Look for TooManyCanaryCustards blog coming soon, all about Harry Potter and why it's good! And you can all email your stories of what HP has done for you...:) No druggies, gangs, or perverst now (sarcasm btw)

Posted by toomanycanarycreams Jan 29th 2007
