Mallory: I must not quit
For the first time since she embarked on a relentless campaign to remove Potter from Gwinnett county's school libraries in August 2005, Laura Mallory has spoken out in detail about her motives. In a new article, she slams "myths" such as "this is a one-woman fight" and "witchcraft is just harmless fantasy." She writes that young children have been indoctrinated into witchcraft, causing their lives to be ruined. Furthermore, she implies that Potter is the reason for "violence, drugs, gangs, addictions, perversions" in schools nowadays, and that "we need God in America again."

In response to the question, "Do you believe Harry Potter promotes Wicca," JKR replied in a 2001 interview with this: "That's not true. Not once has a child come up to me and said, 'Due to you I've decided to devote my life to the occult.' People underestimate children so hugely. They know it's fiction. When people are arguing from that kind of standpoint, I don't think reason works tremendously well. But I would be surprised if some of them had read the books at all [Mallory hasn't].

"Witches and wizards are a huge part of children's literature; it'll never go away. Hundred years, two hundred years' time there'll be another kind of wizard story."

You can now contact Ms. Mallory at her website. Also, we don't plan to post anything Mallory-related until a verdict of her current case arrives.

Ok, blog set up. Please come and post your stories about how Harry has changed your life, about the themes running through the books and how/why you love them so much. No rudeness, personal attacks on religion or Laura will be tolerated though. I just want to compile stories about the wonders of Harry Potter. http://toomanycanarycream s.blogspot.com/

I think that Mallory should really consider the context of the Harry Potter books. The Harry Potter world is made up, and the sort of magic that goes on in the Harry Potter world is different than the type of witchcraft that Christians believe exists and are forbidden to engage in. In the Christian, and Muslim and possibly Jewish standpoint real witchcraft is forbidden because it requires us to communicate with demons. So basically, Satan is channelling his powers through you, and as good Christians/Muslims/Jews, collabarating with Satan is obviously forbidden. Now in the Harry potter world, the type of magic these people perform is simply their own. They were born as magical beings, and do not communicate with satan to perform magic. What makes the people in the Harry Potter world good or evil is simply how they use their magical powers. In the Harry Potter world, divination is real, people can apparently predict the future. In the christian/muslim/jewish standpoint, divination is forbidden because it is not real, not because we are not allowed to know the future, God even gives us "prophecies" through our prophets. God forbids us from engaging in fortune telling, because we CAN'T predict the future, and any sort of prediction a so-called fortuneteller would give us is an outright lie. So God simply forbids us to engage in divination, because it is false. Now in the Harry potter world, Divination is real sometimes, so in their world nothing would be wrong with it. The only argument that holds against the Harry Potter books in Christianity, is that it is a fictional, fantasy world, and one could argue and God might not want us to make up fictional worlds, because that might encourage falsehood. But that would mean that any fictional fantasy books would be forbidden in Christianity, whether it be about talking animals, cute little elves, or pretty little fairies.

I *wonder* what sort of messages people are going to be sending hr on that website...?

Posted by ReallyTired Jan 29th 2007

Come on people. Mallory is not going to accomplish anything against these books as long as those running the government have functioning brains. It is not logical to use this space to condemn Christianity (or any other religion) because control freak activists like her make up a miniscule percentage of the total Christian population. She only gets more attention because of her lack of reason, radical views, and unsuccessful attempts to ban HP. Besides, all you can hope to accomplish by attacking those who have beliefs other than your own is alienating them as well as yourself.

Harry Potter killed my family....:-(

Posted by Scarlette Jan 29th 2007

If she had actually read any of the books, her comments would at least hold some ground (even if she's still wrong) - since opinions vary. But this is like me trying to attack something I know nothing about. That lady's pathetic. She has no sense of logic, and she's wasting her time fighting a losing battle. I bet she's one of those ladies that just sits at home, day after day, trying desperately to fill her time with something productive... I guess she doesn't live on Wisteria Lane... she probably thinks that by attacking something as widely popular as Harry Potter would give her some 15 minutes of fame. her kids must be terribly embarassed.

Posted by fi_the_fairynymph Jan 29th 2007

well said ReallyTired! you make an excellent point.

Posted by Smarty_Roxy Jan 29th 2007

I hope this whole load of *insert word I'm not allowed to say on MN here* hasn't turned anyone away from Christianity. God sent a message of joy and of love. Last I recall the message wasn't "DON'T READ HARRY POTTER!!!" I'm writing to this site, give them a piece of my mind.

Posted by Sarahley27 Jan 29th 2007

I am just so sick of people talking so much crap on Potter books when they haven't even read them! Read them and THEN form an opinion!

Posted by Gonzo2006 Jan 29th 2007

Yeah...I think she's just doing it for attention, cuz there isn't really a way that the school board would get rid of these books. I agree with all of you that say she should read the books before she judges. Aren't we always telling kids not to judge a book by it's cover???

Posted by GrownUpChick Jan 29th 2007

HappyHippoGryff and RKRK1313: Bravo to you both! You are making alot of sense! FaithIn Snape: what are you trying to do, start a liberal vs. conservative war? This is not the place. If you want to complain about liberals, go to O'Reilly or Limbaugh's site, okay? Laura Mallory seems like nothing more than an uptight, closed-minded BAC who can't stand the thought of children being inspired by anything other than the Bible. She is an example of what's so terribly wrong in the U. S. today. Too many people trying to force their opinions on others and ban things they don't like while being secretly jealous of the attention those things, and their creators, get. While I agree with those who say that any e-mails sent to this woman should be well thought-out and mature, I disagree with the one person who says none of us should send her negative e-mails. She put up a website which she knew would be visited by those who disagree with her, meaning that she obviously wants the attention. She probably thinks she can "convert" HP fans. After all, this woman probably also believes that homosexuality can be "cured". If some upset HP fans send her emotional messages, well, she deserves whatever she gets! Sorry, but it's true. She knows she has a controversial opinion and she's loving all the attention. No one can convince me that I'm wrong about this. She is NOT trying to bring people to God. She is trying to get more converts to her warped version of Christianity so that her church can get more money and her pastor can buy a Rolex and another Mercedes. That's all people like her care about; creating more human robots for Jesus.

Posted by Staplegunneddxx Jan 29th 2007

Wow. She has got to be the most ignorant person i have ever heard of. She hasn't read the books but fully believes that children are doing drugs and witchcraft because of the books. Her poor children. What is she tryign to prove anyway? If they get banned there, which they won't, no one will care. People will just go out abd buy them since they can no longer get hem from the library or where ever.

Posted by ReallyTired Jan 29th 2007

Thank you, fi_the_fairynymph.

Posted by glo_baby_glo Jan 29th 2007

Where is her proof that h.p. is what is sending kids to drugs and gangs? shes insane! kids were obviously doing all that wayyyyy before she opened her big mouth! How on earth did her brain connect "drugs, addictions, and perversions" with harry potter? I am a christian and all my friends are christians. Some of them read the books and some of them dont, its a personal preference thing. I agree that we need God in America, and we have for a long time now, but pissing off most of the country is not the way to lead people to Christ. I think that its okay to read the books and watch the movies as long as you have enough sense to know that its not real. duh. All she is doing is promoting the books by making a big deal about it.what she saying is nuts. My idea is to kidnap her, ductape her to a chair, hold her eyes open and force her to read the books aloud. hahahaha. I like the post that someone else made about blaming Paris Hiltons singing career on Harry Potter... that was good! seriously though... give up mallory! its a lost war!

Posted by silverphoenix21 Jan 29th 2007

The stupidity is killing me. I don't have anything more to say about this lady. Before I thought that she was actually pretty nice, just very misguided about this issue. But now... she's just too moronic to even argue with.

Posted by silverphoenix21 Jan 29th 2007

I actually went to her website... these people probably don't even realize how stupidly pathetic their argument sounds, not to mention hypocritical and prejudiced against other religions not even including witchcraft.

Posted by Patronus_Potter Jan 29th 2007

ok, i could argue that harry potter is aganst my religion (judaism) becuae they dont mention hannukah or passover or anything in the books, but christmas, easter and everything else is mentioned. if i think that its aganist my religion (i dont) then i wouldnt read it. if she thinks it condriticts christianity, for petes sake DONT READ THEM.

Posted by music_is_magic Jan 29th 2007

Oh dear! Potter is the reason for "violence, drugs, gangs, addictions, perversions" in schools nowadays, is it? My, my, I had no idea at all that the reason I see kids getting beaten up is because of Harry Potter! Purlease! I doubt many of the bullies or ganags have even been to a library, and I bet they destroy Harry Potter books rather then read them! I think she is going too far. I mean, there are actual book series devoted to Wicca, why is she not trying to ban them? SHe really is one minded. And she hasn't even read the books yet? Hilarious! Don't judge a book by its cover, ever heard that? And has anyone been on her website? It is hilarious! Honestly, most of the stuff there is...well, i think she should read the books. I am refraining from calling her website garbage, because unlike her, I do not judge things that others hold dear. AS a christian, a very strong christian, all I can say is WHAT ON EARTH ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT LAURA MALLORY???????????? no religion has ever come into Harry Potter. no word has related to religion. LETS JUST KEEP RELIGION OUT OF IT!!! Especially since Harry potter does portray bad magic as evil and wrong.

Posted by db0823 Jan 29th 2007

IGNORE HER!! All she wants is attention, and by reporting about her and discussing her, we give her exactly what she wants

Posted by kookaburra Jan 29th 2007

hmmm.... instead of attacking negative influences on young people such as violent video games and mind numbing television shows, let's attack a series of novels that teach nobility and righteousness in difficult situations and encourage many young people to get excited about reading. yeah, that'll work.

Posted by hufflepuff_girl Jan 29th 2007

Number one... Harry Potter isn't BAD. That's such a stereotype! Number two... Just because people read Harry Potter and etc doesn't mean that God can't be present in their lives. She needs to know that JKR IS a Christian. Wow, talk about judging. The Bible says NOT to judge lady... Number three... Give it UP. You haven't one yet and you WON'T. If you were going to win, you would have by now. Lady, I'm a Christian and read Harry Potter. Am I going to Hell or anything? No. You should stop judging people and read your Bible more.

Posted by kkatid Jan 29th 2007

you know what is really stupid? people who use drug and are in gangs and are violent and perverted are not the literary type, for the most part! the people like that probably have not cracked open a book in their life. besides that, other things cause them to be like that, like being raised in a troubled home, which people should really be fighting against.

Posted by LaurenWeasley Jan 29th 2007

Tsk tsk. Laura Mallory.. if you read this, I DO understand why you want Harry Potter out of libraries .. because it's about witchcraft and all of that, what you call, 'nonsense'. Now I'm a 13 year old kid, and defiently the Harry Potter series #1 fan, and I can seriously consider this mad. It's just a story! Do you HONESTLY think the Harry Potter will put kids on drugs and stuff? That's rubbish. I"m sorry to say, but THAT'S nonsense. You're's truly, the Harry Potter series #1 fan [- Lauren

Posted by psycho2007 Jan 29th 2007

leave us alone lady do u ever stop? wait no...no....no you don't ever stop thats your problem u keep going until u end up in a mental institusion

Posted by danfan_1 Jan 29th 2007

what a phsyco-religious freak. she hasnt read the books??!!??!! how does Harry Potter promote drugs?? this is insane...

Posted by danfan_1 Jan 29th 2007

I'm Hindu and I can't believe she thinks Harry Potter is a cult. HARRY POTTER. omg the entire Harry Potter fanbase of the whole world will crush her...how is she still here?? are the courts taking her seriously?? she is the craziest most .....i cant even find the words... idiot.

Posted by Dexier Jan 29th 2007

i am waiting for a wiccan to sue her for the unjust claims she is making. I am wiccan and if she actually researched anything (which she doesn't seem to AT ALL) she would know that wiccans believe in the three fold rule and whatever harm you do comes back three times worse to you. Also i was wiccan before i read HP and i am happy with both. HP does not nor will it ever say "if you say these spells you can do magic and it is good because it is evil and will make god hate you." if it does someone can draw my attention to it as i must have missed it ;) Wiccans also are more based in nature and although i have been wiccan (and there is a DIFFERENCE to being wiccan and a witch btw) for over four years i have only done a few spells and they were all to help me get along with my sister. All Mallory and that website (which made me laugh so much) are doing is shinning a massive spotlight on their stupiditty. I think gangster films have more of an impact than harry potter as over here at least it is seen a slightly geeky thing but in a good way, definitly not satanic. I am not bothered if she keeps going because she's just encouraging more people to read the books and realise how idiotic she is. I think the best thing ever though is if her kids were found or photographed reading the books. I wonder what they think of all this. it would be nice to know. Also this is the reason that some people think christians are a little OTT. Espicially if she goes around saying "god is behind me" and all that. It actually creeps me out. I think that god (if he does indeed exist) has better things to do with his time than look after a woman who has clearly lost whatever message she originally wanted to tell.

Posted by danfan_1 Jan 29th 2007

does she think that only chritians believe in a god? I'm Hindu and we have a supernatural belief too. People from all over the world with different religions are not banning Harry Potter from their libraries because :it promotes drugs" or whatever this nutcase is saying. and what does religion have to do with it. I LOVE HARRY POTTER!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by ilovesushix3 Jan 29th 2007

to put it simply, i hate her

Posted by danfan_1 Jan 29th 2007

omg i just went to her site.... i think i will die laughing...

Posted by GinnyandHarryForever Jan 29th 2007

Is she even paying attention to who the fans are. Im an innocent person whos never been kissed who honestly is a bit of a nerd. All the druggies (and trust me i know some) think Harry Potter is idiotic. And you know what she brings up to me, the Witch burnings where women were burned if they seemed to smart because they could be witches. If its not explained by certain beleifs, blame it on something or call it evil. So many problems are all about people not knowing or understanding, face it world, there are things your not going to understand. This is ridiculous though, its not even not knowing because its so deep, shes just too lazy to read a book.

Posted by danfan_1 Jan 29th 2007

omg I think her quotes are fake. and she is taking opinions from 9 year olds. not that I have anything against 9 year olds.... but these innocent children are viocing innocent desires of wanting to be a witch or be able to fly...like every girl has wanted to be a princess and every boy a superhero. stupid lady. she is in it for the fame. send her mail everyone. I love Harry Potter!!!!!!!

Posted by dangerousMuse Jan 29th 2007

I HATE THIS LADY!!!! *CURSES HER* AND SHE HASN'T EVEN READ THE BOOKS!!

Posted by Broomsticgirl Jan 29th 2007

Mrs.Mallory is a sad person and needs to rethink her life. Not to mention drop this case about how bad Harry Potter is. I feel really sad for her kids now.

Posted by Mimbletonia Jan 29th 2007

i hope no one thinks that all Christians are like that. my entire family is Christian, and not only do we love the Harry Potter series, but, well, we're a bit nerdy about it. anyone who thinks these books are dangerous, evil, or have "ruined" the lives of the children who read them, is not only a fanatic, but a moron as well.

Posted by rr8569 Jan 30th 2007

I just took a peek at her website, and have to say that her comments and content are hypocritical and narrow-minded, at best. (I'm more inclined to say moronic, sanctmonial, and blatantly absurd) The points she tries so vailiantly to make just don't stand up in the cold, harsh light of fact. If she would just bother to take the time to read the series, she would have slightly more credibility, but as she is far too much a moral beacon for that to happen, I suppose she will remain an uninformed, pompous spotlight hound. 'Tis truly pathetic.

Posted by ltrain48 Jan 30th 2007

finally someone solved that pesky drug problem...

Posted by hpfan_11293 Jan 30th 2007

If she thought we would fall for that she was wrong! And removing the HP books from school shelves is in other words, BANNING the books from schools. Also, if she is so fond of our constitution, then she should read the part about FREEDOM OF PRESS. (sorry if i quoted anyone, i didn't have time to read 687 comments before my bus comes.)

Posted by Ithilwen Jan 30th 2007

I must comment again... What bugs me is that Mallory is mistaking folklore and mythology...and even Wicca...for the fertility religion of the ancient Canaanites, where they would, erm, have "special ceremonies" on the temple steps...to celebrate fertility....O_o (you can figure out what they did). Simply put, it was one certain brand of "magic" mentioned in the Old Testament that's got her panties in a twist....and she thinks if it says magic it must mean the same thing every time. Either way, even if it is real, how can reading about something you don't believe in harm you, unless your faith is so weak that you are swayed by anything you hear? Oh yeah, and as a side note....the good magic in Lord of the Rings (used by Gandalf and the elves) is based on an affinity to nature...a lot closer to Wicca than Harry Potter will ever get. Don't tell Mallory that, though. I think her universe would implode if she found that out.....or she may just try to ban LOTR too, which would irritate me even more....

Posted by Jessi2585 Jan 30th 2007

OMG!!! MALLORY JUST READ THE BOOKS!!! If she really read the books then she would know that there not evil. omg she makes me mad. My mom is really religious but she loves the books!! Mallory please due us all a favor and get a brain.

Posted by NoOneWouldListen Jan 30th 2007

I don't think that I'm going to write to her. I did that once, on another website where a lot of HP-defenders had written, and they used all the letters as examples of the 'poor deluded souls' that had been 'corrupted and brainwashed' by Harry Potter's evil influences. Or maybe I will write her. I've really just quit being annoyed with her or worried about H being banned. It's not like she's going to suceed. Hmmm... someone should make a parody about her.

Posted by ReallyTired Jan 30th 2007

Hey, I can completely see a Mallory parody existing in the near future. That would make my day.

Posted by bunnai Jan 30th 2007

Here is what I sent her: Here's my response to Laura Mallory's comments on Harry Potter in her article. My comments will probably go unread seeing as how she didn't even read the Harry Potter books to gain any knowledge of what she's talking about but it's worth a try: The Bible isn't banned from schools. It's just not something that they need to teach. If they were going to work on Harry Potter, they wouldn't teach that it's true. The Bible would be expected to be taught as "truth". Harry Potter just appeals more to children as an entertaining read. IT DOES NOT PROMTE THE OCCULT. The fact that it is FICTION spells that out. Getting rid of Harry Potter from schools would be such a huge mistake because of all you crazy mother opinions. And you say that it's just for schools, but it's something that would not end there. Soon you will try to ban it from bookstores. And then maybe not stop there but then continue on to have anyone writing such fiction be forbidden. Who are you to enforce your OPINION on the general public? And if you read the books, you'd understand that if the books promote anything, they promote things like honesty, courage, dedication, friendship, family... Should those themes be banned from our shelves? So what if there are other opinionated mothers who agree with you? That still doesn't relate to the fact that there are MANY more people who completely and one hundred percent disagree. Plus, they disagree for BETTER reasons. To be level headed about the situation, you would realize that your reasoning for banning these books has absolutely no solid fact behind it. The supporters of the books have the fact that many more children find reading more entertaining in great cause to these books. Oh and the best part. So you believe in witchcraft. You seem to believe in it even more than the children who read the books. So maybe one kid was lead to suicide because of witchcraft, not that you could even PROVE that since ...

Posted by bunnai Jan 30th 2007

CONTINUED: ...since the kid can't say that for himself. There are much worse things that lead to depression and suicide than witchcraft. How about kids who are sheltered all their life from the things that the everyday teenager gets to enjoy? How about a mother who takes a huge stand against the world, and now having to live with the fact that your mom is disliked by a large part of the POPULATION? I would sure get derpressed. Want some research? Watch South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut. It's starring YOU! And I am dead serious about this, that movie will actually teach you something because it makes a very good point on protesters like you who waste your time on the minimal issues that this country has to deal with. High school was filled with violence, drugs, and alcohol for me. I did not participate in ANY of it and I guarantee that everyone who does would laugh in your face if you asked them if they ever looked into witchcraft. The issues are completely irrelevent. You make yourself look foolish by bringing up such things that we SHOULD be focusing on as opposed to fictional novels about dragons and magic. So God dislikes witchcraft. We are biologically built to form our own opinions. The only person who is following and practicing what they read is you. Not the nine year olds who can't pronounce "wingardium leviosa" at home reading Harry Potter under the covers with a flashlight because their crazy mothers banned it from the house. Oh and P.S. There's no such thing as magic, you loony toon.

Posted by dlombard Jan 30th 2007

HI everyone! I sent Mrs. Mallory a letter and I am posting it right now... I do not mean to offend anyone with this inquiry, but.... Is this a joke? I would think people devoted to the greater good would dedicate their time to something more important than children's literature. These books have been circulating for ages, with more than ten million people reading their pages. If there where trully ment to enforce the "witchcraft religion" do you not think half of these people would be practicing it already? There are so much more important things going on in the world to worry about. The hungry, the poor, global warming, aids, the list could go on. I have read all the books, and watched all the movies. Indeed the movies have gotten darker, but for those reasons the ratings have changed, making some PG-. And each parent has the right to decide if their child should read or not the books. I started reading these books at the age of 14, and I have not followed such dark path. I am currently 19 studying animal biology, with hopes to enter veterinary school. None of the people I know have turned in to wicca lovers. In fact I believe that these novels are created to amuse, and increase children's capacity to imagine. If you truly believe these books are evil then forbid them from your family, but let others decide their purpose. Stop imposing your thoughts on others. Sincerely, Danielle Lombardi Hopefully you guys can give me some feedback, and tell me if this was a good thing to do or not. Thanks a ton!!! byes!

Ha ha, I think her contact webpage is busted. I tried sending her a comment and it didn't work.

Posted by Ithilwen Jan 30th 2007

So I just emailed Laura Mallory. Here's one thing I noticed: she used a Barna Group survey to back up her claims that Harry Potter was infecting teen's heads. So...survey says! "The research cannot pinpoint cause-and-effect relationships, but it appears that many of the teens who were most likely to be misdirected spiritually by Harry Potter were already struggling in other ways. That is, many teens who said Potter increased their interest in witchcraft were already isolated from others or were already dabbling in witchcraft-related activities." Does anyone else find this hilariously ironic?

I just sent her an email tell her about my friends parents like her and how i lended my friend my bokks...lol
