Mallory: I must not quit
For the first time since she embarked on a relentless campaign to remove Potter from Gwinnett county's school libraries in August 2005, Laura Mallory has spoken out in detail about her motives. In a new article, she slams "myths" such as "this is a one-woman fight" and "witchcraft is just harmless fantasy." She writes that young children have been indoctrinated into witchcraft, causing their lives to be ruined. Furthermore, she implies that Potter is the reason for "violence, drugs, gangs, addictions, perversions" in schools nowadays, and that "we need God in America again."

In response to the question, "Do you believe Harry Potter promotes Wicca," JKR replied in a 2001 interview with this: "That's not true. Not once has a child come up to me and said, 'Due to you I've decided to devote my life to the occult.' People underestimate children so hugely. They know it's fiction. When people are arguing from that kind of standpoint, I don't think reason works tremendously well. But I would be surprised if some of them had read the books at all [Mallory hasn't].

"Witches and wizards are a huge part of children's literature; it'll never go away. Hundred years, two hundred years' time there'll be another kind of wizard story."

You can now contact Ms. Mallory at her website. Also, we don't plan to post anything Mallory-related until a verdict of her current case arrives.

This is really silly and pointless attention seeking. If this doesn't make an impact, she'll probably start hounding on Dan, Rupert and Emma next, sending them Bibles or something. Actually it wouldn't surprise me if she is already.

Posted by loona Jan 27th 2007

Oh and then theres this on her site: “The study revealed that 41 percent of teens have either seen the Potter film or have read one or more of the Potter books. As a result of watching the movie or reading the books, 12 percent said they were more interested in witchcraft…” ...... Ok first off 12% isn't very many. I was also like to highlight the words MORE INTERESTED, that means that these kids were already interested in witchcraft to begin with, as in Pre-Harry Potter. so yeah totally Jo's fault.

Posted by LindseyBindsey Jan 27th 2007

I've sent her two comments already. Not hate mail. Just a piece of my mind... she doesn't have one, so... lol. Everyone send here your thoughts! haha

Posted by CedricLover125 Jan 27th 2007

I contacted them and this is what I wrote: How dare you try to rid Harry Potter! I used to hate reading before I read those books! These books are an act of literature created in the mind of an astounding author! These stories DO NOT promote the Wicca religion nor do they have anything to do with any religion at all! They are specifically there to entertain the children and EVEN ADULTS of all ages. Besides. You will never succeed at disposing this world from all magical/witchcraft literature, because as a revolt, people shall re-create these stories and they shall never disappear from this Earth. You should not blockade the children and adults from these arts because it is for their own free will and helps develop imagination and taking this away from the people would be cruel. I bid you good luck and recommend that you all go to therapy.... I tried to use some big words so that they thought that I was an adult and not a teenager!!! TEE HEE!!!

Whats she going to do to us if we read them... stick us in Azkaban?!

Posted by Lindsey11387 Jan 27th 2007

I sent her an e-mail asking (in a nonthreatening way) if she could provide me with a statistical analysis of the harm Harry Potter has caused in children under the age of 18 for a school project I am doing. What I did not mention is that the project is about morons who have never read Harry Potter think it is corrupting the nations youth.

Posted by indiestar08 Jan 27th 2007

Its my strong belief that Mallory would have to be on illicit drugs to cause her to keep pursuing this very lost cause. (Uh can we say Attention Seeker?) Theres an article on the website, which was actually really funny to read. "As a former witch, I can speak with authority when I say that I have examined the works of Rowling and that the Harry Potter books are training manuals for the occult. " When I last checked the spells and potions in the books, weren't real and the wicca kids I know don't run around with wands. So does this mean JKR is training us to use things that won't work? Because In that case I want my money back. The whole website is a work of art and the aritcles on Harry Potter are absolutely ridiculous. Just Give It Up. No one cares what Mallory thinks. We only care what JKR says and right now thats occupying the majority of our minds while we try and figure out HPDH release date.

Posted by britfan Jan 27th 2007

She's becoming quite annoying isn't she? "God has been with me, answering specific prayers and reassuring me of His will and His word" she says. She needs help. "May God forgive us, open our blind eyes and deaf ears and send revival." I think it may be her who is 'blind' and 'deaf'... to reality.

Posted by pigwidgeon Jan 27th 2007

HP doesn't ruin peoples lives. It stops an enormous number of people from experiencing severe depression.

Posted by Kate_Loves_Harry_Potter Jan 27th 2007

o my.....doesn't she know she's gonna lose she has nothing to support her case so harry potter caused:violence, drugs, gangs, addictions, perversions..how could she not notice wars, druggies, the thousands of gangs, the AA, and pervs all her life?.......someone's a moron *cough (that just happens to sound like Mallory)*

Posted by st1y Jan 27th 2007

She is a PRIME example of what is wrong in the world. The road to damnation is paved with people with good intentions. Mallory if you don't want your children reading the books don't let them. But don't tell me what my kids can read or can't read. If she thinks that the Harry Potter books are a leading cause of " drug use and volence" I think she would be better of tring to get the six o'clock news banned.

Posted by MaraudersFan13 Jan 27th 2007

Maybe she's a DEATH EATER!!!!!!!

Posted by hpstephanie Jan 27th 2007

I have just written a lengthy letter to the website. i encourage everyone to do so in order to either make her mad/ shut her up.

Posted by silverglass19 Jan 27th 2007

Jeez...this woman has it all backward, twisted around in her closed, ignorant little mind. Amazing that someone who claims to follow the preachings of love could be so consumed by blinding hate. :/ I'm interested to see what her website looks like, but I'll be d*mned if I give her any hits. *snub*

Posted by oroleon Jan 27th 2007

Okay, I live in the bible belt, smack dab in the middle, and I took the time just to say a couple of things to her. I didn't go on an argument for HP. Lord knows we could write a book for that. I did however play a different side that I believe she can't argue with...at least not without insulting me. --------- Mrs. Mallory, I am a Christian. I have grown up in a safe and loving home. I live a life that includes God. I live a life that includes Harry Potter. I've read your arguments against the books in public schools. So the least you can do is read this: I began reading the books when I was eight years old, when my Grandfather would read them to me. These children that you believe are going to grow up corrupt, I was 'supposed'to be one of them. Yet isn't that interesting...I live a life with God, I have never been tempted to smoke or drink or participate in lewd sinful behaviors. Certainly not of the occult. In fact, from actually completely reading the Harry Potter books I have learned that LOVE is the most powerful kind of magic. God is love. God is magic. Magic is the miraculous and unexplained. That is God. I don't appreciate you condeming myself along with other fellow Christians to this horrific sinful life because we have grown up with a series of novels. Because the last time I checked, that was God's duty, not yours. Stop insulting my faith. I've had enough. Believe me, I live in the middle of the bible belt, so people like you, I've heard a million times over. So parent your child in whichever way you will, I'm sure you're a wonderful mother, but don't make judgments about those whom you are ignorant of. That's not your place. - Kaitlin

Wow, have you seen this page? ---> http://www.hisv oicetoday.org/hp quotes.htm she's crazy...

Posted by Ithilwen Jan 27th 2007

*twitch* But she gives absolutely no explanation as to why she believes Harry Potter is real witchcraft! I have a very limited understanding of Wicca, but it's better than she does! She is equating folklore with reality! Did her parents teach her the difference between the two? I am going to do some extensive research on Wicca, FOR HER, and send it to her, and tell her, "Look, was this so hard to do?" She's driving me mad now. She equates every problem with society with taking the group Bible readings and prayers out of school. I'd like to see that in school too, but that's not the only cause of these problems! How can she possibly think that Harry Potter causes...gangs? I mean, WTF indeed! Okay I just had to rant. I will definitely be writing to her.

Posted by Lunasa Jan 27th 2007

Ok, sent her a piece of my mind too. I just thanked her for sending a shiver down my spine on just reading her name and since Jo's one her homework, perhaps she shouls do hers....properly. While she's trying to ban HP, she should try banning Mythology and Classical Studies from schools, that's were the "demonolgy" comes from. Stupid idiotic woman.

Posted by indiestar08 Jan 27th 2007

and hate is the work of the DEVIL. I say we buy the series for her and leave it on the door step, but then thats about 50-100 dollars down the drain because she'd probably burn them.

Posted by OneofThem Jan 27th 2007

Silly, silly woman. Quit giving Christians a bad name! Ever heard of The Chronicles of Narnia? The Lord of the Rings? Those have "magic" and are very popular—moreso than Harry Potter, I hope. :P Both were written by devout Christians. (C.S. Lewis was an Anglican and a Christian apologist [one who defends his faith as a hobby or career], and J.R.R. Tolkien was a devout Roman Catholic.) Opposition to fantasy is the work of atheists.

Posted by oroleon Jan 27th 2007

OneofThem, you forgot to mention JKR is a member of the Church of Scotland :) Interesting how she blames HP for Columbine though huh? Probably 9/11 too no doubt....

Posted by Crazy_for_Harry Jan 27th 2007

Dear Laura Mallory(or should I say Idiot of the Year?), Unless I am much mistaken, you were named Idiot of The Year by The Washington Post, a very well known newspaper (though I am sure you found out the day it came out). I think you have earned that humiliating title well, as you bash the Harry Potter books, assume they make kids join occults, and blame them for voilence in school. I know many young kids who read Harry Potter, and not one turned to the occult. Why not trying reading the books for once, instead of speaking out against them? Your bashes on Harry Potter seem like feeble attempts of attention that you crave. Thank you for reading my e-mail, as I am sure this is taking precious time away from your daily ongoings of making yourself look like an uneducated fool. -Sara

Posted by WickedSmile Jan 27th 2007

For pity's sake, someone make this woman shut up! I'm so tired of her and her babble about all us being turned evil by a book.

Posted by usd443 Jan 27th 2007

Yes, it is Harry Potter books that is causing violence, drugs, gangs, addictions, and perversions not the relatives and friends.

Posted by indiestar08 Jan 27th 2007

THe only problem with bringing The Chronicles of Narnia into it is that she can justify the book because the majority believe (as well as i do) that its a religiously based book and therefore no harm can come from it (that part i don't believe)

Posted by Wot_Wot Jan 27th 2007

Goodness, we need Hermione here. "Foul, Loathsome, Evil Little Cockroach" doesn't seem to cover what I want to call her. How dare she make a bad name for us Potter Fans? I for one, am disgusted by her actions. She won't even read the book. It is like saying that...I don't even know. Her accusations are so unfathomably stupid, I cannot think of a comparison!

Posted by divinemizjess Jan 27th 2007

I am a Christian and Mallory is giving us all a bad name. I LOVE Harry Potter, but I'm not interested in being a witch...does that mean I can still read the books? I went on her website and read up on the beliefs and everything....I can understand where she is coming from (my mom was once the same...but shes better now) but helloooooo its a STORY! She should be spreading the word of God instead of acting like a....well . She's embarrassing.

Posted by LindseyBindsey Jan 27th 2007

Everyone send multiple e-mails to her. I'd love it if she said something about it on her website...

Posted by Glaedr Jan 27th 2007

I sent her something rather simmilar, Oroleon. People please try to remember that, much as it might make you feel better, sending her a ton of insults really doesn't help. Perhaps if she received some reasonable (calm) emails she might be a little more willing to dicuss things calmly herself.

Posted by GeorgeusGirl Jan 27th 2007

Ms. Mallory. I have heard over and over again about your attempts to get Harry Potter banned from schools. I will tell you right out, you will not succeed. But if you will read on as to hear why. Harry Potter has been my love, my passion for quite a while now. It's full of laughs, mystery, love, and most of all friendship. Yes, there's evil and though they have not been ultimately defeated (have to wait for Book 7). Harry Potter is a place for you to escape your own world and troubles and delve into Harry's for a wonderful ride. I visit MuggleNet.com and the LeakyCauldron.com everyday. Those are 2 huge fan sites where millions of Potter fans go. None of us practice Witchcraft. In fact, most of us there are teens or early adults. You and your "people" underestimate the children of today. We know it's fantasy. We know it'll never happen. You need to stop shielding your children from a book that they will love for the rest of their lives. They will not start casting spells at you and think they will work. Sure, maybe as a joke but not seriously, and I would know as I know the Potter Fandom and have many Potter-obsessed friends. In response to the question, "Do you believe Harry Potter promotes Wicca," JKR replied in a 2001 interview, saying: "That's not true. Not once has a child come up to me and said, 'Due to you I've decided to devote my life to the occult.' People underestimate children so hugely. They know it's fiction. When people are arguing from that kind of standpoint, I don't think reason works tremendously well. But I would be surprised if some of them had read the books at all. Another point I would like to make is that America has the freedom of religion. I know everyone thinks their religion is the best but America is a free country and that's what makes it so special. By adding God back into school you would be ruining more lives that Harry has. (Not that we've seen any proof that he's destroyed ANY). Please Ms. Mallory, I too believe in God but u...

Has anyone read the Quotes Section? She went through peoples sites on the internet who are looking for people to join their covens! I bet my life she took these sources without permission.

Posted by soccerluver13 Jan 27th 2007

I'm a 13 year old Catholic. I go to a Catholic school. I go to mass every Friday and Sunday and have Religion classes 5 times a week. I've been reading HP since I was 7. It's not like I'm gonna go join the occult because I read about witchcraft. Fantasy and Sci-Fi are practically all I read. I love reading about magic and things like that, cause it's fun. Mallory is just another person jumping to conclusions before reading the books & taking fiction WAY to seriously. ( Just like all those people who wanna ban DaVinci Code. I love that book! =) ) Sure, we all wish that magic was real sometimes, but we all know it's not... Bottom line, HARRY POTTER ROCKS. And Laura Mallory, go read the books. Stfu. =)

Posted by Crazy_for_Harry Jan 27th 2007

GeorgeusGirl she is going to take what you say and twist it to her liking. She'll probably take the part where you say "Harry Potter is a place for you to escape your own world and troubles" and translate it as Harry Potter is making kids delusional and not aware of reality. I sent her an e-mail telling her that she deserved the title Idiot of the Year.

Posted by HPluver13 Jan 27th 2007

Well, I am a Catholic and I'm homeschooled too but I love HP! The books don't have any evil influence on me! I mean, come on! That woman must have a mental problem or something! I agree with the fact that America needs God and everything, but this is certainly not the way to do it! Oh, and good job, Jo, for standing up to that!

Posted by GeorgeusGirl Jan 27th 2007

haha what I really wanted to send her I dont think I could post on this message board. =] But w/e, it's not like Mallory will succeed.

Posted by morgaine_dulac Jan 27th 2007

Crying or laughing? I dont know what to do after having read some articles on Mallroy's website.

Posted by LindseyBindsey Jan 27th 2007

Crazy_for_Harry, I liked that e-mail... was funny, lol.

Posted by muggleprefect Jan 27th 2007

mallory should be inscribing "I MUST NOT TELL RIDCIULOUS HARRY POTTER LIES I MUST NOT TELL RIDICIOULS HARRY POTTER LIES" into her hand...i sent 3 e-mails already. Each one saying "nicely" that not everybody in public schools are christain or catholic and mite not BELIVE in tat stuff...me, personaly, am christain and i luve the books and movies just as the next guy would.. mallory needs to get a life prehaps sewing will intrest her?

Posted by ConCon Jan 27th 2007

yes, actually, you must quit. Just like jo said. witches and wizards are going to be around forever. I dont see mrs. mallory trying to ban: cinderella, snow white, sleeping beauty, ERAGON! etc. they all have witchcraft and magic in them. Hey! maybe its because of the fairy tails that people need to spend huge dollars making little princess costumes instead of feeding the poor! honestly...

Posted by Weazley_is_MY_King Jan 27th 2007

Ugghh . . .honestly, this woman is starting to disgust me!! I mean, honestly, half the points she's trying to make don't even relate to the books. She just keeps pushing without any proof to put it by!! This is driving me crazy. Grrr . . . . I was planning on venting right now and righting a whole bunch of stuff, but now I'm just frustrated, so . . . nevermind >:(

Posted by wougal07 Jan 27th 2007

This lady is totally off her rocker! I don't think I've ever heard of any stories of some kid joining wicca because of Harry Potter! This lady is clearly just digging for a story and finding nothing! Read the gosh darn books!

Posted by LadyM Jan 27th 2007

I just saw the quotes page! It's absolutely ridiculous! I have half a mind to fly to Georgia right now and yell my head out to her! I already sent her my piece of mind! I don't know what to do anymore! I bet she took them without permission too, and i bet as well that those teenagers had never read harry potter before!

Posted by Kaylad Jan 27th 2007

OMg I am sittin up here laughing cause this woman is totally crazy. I am angry also that she is saying all those things about the Harry Potter books and she just won't stop. If anything I think the Harry Potter books show children the meaning of friendship and how to be loyal something along those lines. But as for witchcraft and stuff like that no way and what the heck she said Harry Potter is the reason kids are violent, joining gangs, and doing drugs.........this woman is insane really.

Posted by LindseyBindsey Jan 27th 2007

I think Laura Thompson should have a good long conversation with Laura Mallory. Maybe that will work. Or she could get some people to throw eggs at her house or something... heheh

Posted by blu_jean_girl Jan 27th 2007

This one is hard for me. I am a Christian. I know that many of my Mom's friends (who are Christians) don't allow their children to read Harry Potter. I think thats their own personal desicion. Mrs. Mallory is trying to make that desicion FOR other people, which is wrong. And to top it all off, she is giving conservative Christians a bad name, painting us as fanatics who are against EVERYTHING. Its tiresome. Even if she wishes to keep her children from reading the books thats fine, but good grief, censorship isn't the answer.

Posted by lumos_aeternum Jan 27th 2007

Notice that the "Books" section of her website is under construction. I take that to mean they can't agree that any books are worthy of "indoctrinating" children with....lol And her thoughts on it causing violence and drugs is pure ignorance. Where were you pre-Potter? Maybe we all completely forgot how drugs and violence did not occur back then. It has seemed such a long time for us....

Posted by muggleprefect Jan 27th 2007

LOLOLOL i just sent her another e-mail, (using my other e-mail adress of course) i wonder what shes gonna say to this!: Dear Ms. Mallory, I am PLEASED to inform you that you have been accepted to Hogwarts school of witchcraft and wizardry. I understand you may not be interested, but due to circumstances, you ARE A WITCH! You have unbeliveable talents into twisting brains around. Well, twisting YOUR brain around, but never the less, i have still accepted you into my school. I forgive you now for ranting HORRID things about our beloved Harry Potter who is still in battle with Lord Voldie. But if you do it again, i will not be so kind and as to must expell you from Hogwarts. RSVP ASAP. ~magic is thrust upon you~ -Professor, and Headmistress, Minerva McGonagal

Posted by oneuglykid Jan 27th 2007

I have ranted about this woman many times before. The thing is, in all that time I haven't changed my opinion of her. With that, I'll just say: this woman is the personification of ignorance.

Posted by circa_rigel Jan 27th 2007

I may not be into Wicca, but I have friends who are, and there is NOTHING Wicca about Harry potter! I also find it obscene that a person can come to such conclusions about Harry Potter without having ever read the books. The quotes they've posted on her page as coming from children who "want" to be able to do magic? I don't see a single quote where a child is asked if they believe that the material presented in Harry Potter is real. Mrs. Mallory, stop embarrassing yourself... You're only hurting yourself and your kids. If you're going to ban Harry Potter, why not go after the "Chronicles of Narnia" and "Lord of the Rings" as well? Oh, I know why... the Christian church endorses those series as having Christian undertones. I've read ALL of these series, and NONE are anything close to the Wiccan religion. All contain magic and quests where good overcomes evil. Harry Potter is a charming book, and it teaches strong moral reasoning to children, including loyalty in friendship, making independent decisions to protect the greater good, and the importance of love as a strength. In fact, the whole premise of Harry Potter comes down to love, and that it alone can conquer evil. If that's not a Christian value, I don't know what is.

Posted by Dan21 Jan 27th 2007

I've posted long comments with my theories on why she's so incredibly stupid, but I'm just not even gonna go through that again. I just want everyone to know that she's so incredibly stupid. That's all.
