Mallory: I must not quit
For the first time since she embarked on a relentless campaign to remove Potter from Gwinnett county's school libraries in August 2005, Laura Mallory has spoken out in detail about her motives. In a new article, she slams "myths" such as "this is a one-woman fight" and "witchcraft is just harmless fantasy." She writes that young children have been indoctrinated into witchcraft, causing their lives to be ruined. Furthermore, she implies that Potter is the reason for "violence, drugs, gangs, addictions, perversions" in schools nowadays, and that "we need God in America again."
In response to the question, "Do you believe Harry Potter promotes Wicca," JKR replied in a 2001 interview with this: "That's not true. Not once has a child come up to me and said, 'Due to you I've decided to devote my life to the occult.' People underestimate children so hugely. They know it's fiction. When people are arguing from that kind of standpoint, I don't think reason works tremendously well. But I would be surprised if some of them had read the books at all [Mallory hasn't].
"Witches and wizards are a huge part of children's literature; it'll never go away. Hundred years, two hundred years' time there'll be another kind of wizard story."
You can now contact Ms. Mallory at her website. Also, we don't plan to post anything Mallory-related until a verdict of her current case arrives.
Emerson's Comment: Winners never quit and quitters never win. But those who never win and never quit are idiots.

*Sigh* Whilst I respect Mrs Mallory's right to determine the reading material for her own children and whilst I understand to a degree where she is coming from due to her religious beliefs, I only wish she would afford others the same courtesy. I am sure that she means well and of course her family is her own affair, but what she is proposing to do will also impact the children of others who may not share her opinion or may even be diameterically opposed to it. She is not the very quintessence of morality, whatever she may feel and some people (myself included) might even find her stance to be somewhat offensive. I was raised Catholic (and am now panentheist), but I have never thought that Christianity was the only possible measure of goodness. It is our actions and not which church we blong to that define us. I think that if Mrs Mallory really sees herself as a paragon of virtue then she ought to contribute her donations to more worthy causes such as Oxfam, rather than in a fruitless campaign against children's stories she can't even trouble herself to read. The Harry Potter stories do not promote witchcraft, simply the notion of innocent fantasy. The darkness in the stories comes not really from magic, but from the hearts of mankind. If anything, they teach us how to combat the evil that pervades both us and society as a whole. I wonder if Mrs Mallory would direct the same vitriol at authors JRR Tolkein and CS Lewis who also had characters who used magic and yet were seen as heroes? It would be ironic considering that they were both members of the 'Inklings', many of whom were devout Christians.
Geez, why doesn't she just lay off. If she doesn't want her kids to read it, then that's her choice. It's not her business to decide what other kids can read. She needs to find a new hobbie. As a matter of fact, I just contacted her and told her to. =] Anyone want to go maul her?? Anyone, anyone?
Oh, Blah, Blah, Blah! She just donesn't know what she is talking about. When will she give up? I mean, we all know that she won't win.
http://petitionspot.com/p etitions/banlm/ What a nut case.
I my gawd, when will she just get a clue? What about her poor children. This CAN'T be doing much for their social lives. And why is she singling out Harry Potter? There are TONS of books that have magic in them. For example, Eragon. Why isn't she trying to get THAT banned, too? I've just finished composing a letter to her outlining my opinion - which is that she is a moron.
she thinks that those books turn people away from God........ how crazy can u get, i mean im a christian and i love harry potter, everyone knows that its fake so why does she keep trying, Jo's right, people do underestimate children. and she hasn't even read the books, if she hasn't read them, she shouldn't judge them. She underestimates children but she's doing something that we all learned not to in kindergarden, judgeing something she hasn't read. she thinks she's helping but she's not. so maybe she should try reading the books before going on and makeing staments like that!!!
ARGH!! This woman is truely making me sick. Has anyone read the quotes on her website? They're absolutely aweful! She's even taken things out of context from the books and interviews with Jo to make it look like she's encouraging evil! J.K. ROWLING INTERVIEW ON THE TODAY SHOW âI made the conscious decision that I was writing about someone evil. I am not going to tell a lie. I wasnât going to pretend an evil person was a cobble cut out and no one would get hurt. If your writing about evil you have a responsibility to show what that means.â ^I'm almost positive that she's talking about Voldemort here. As if kids can't tell that he's evil! We all need to write to her now that we have an address. But screaming hate mail ranting about what an idiot she is (no matter how tempting that is) will get ua no where. Perhaps if we calmly explain our logic to her, she'll actually listen. But then again, perhaps her head's too thick to listen to logic. :p
I cant believe this women, she is a complete nutter. While I am technically an atheist, I have many friends who are christian, pagan/wiccan, buddhists....I believe to each his own. She speaks about wicca like it's devil worshipping when in actuality they dont even believe in the devil. In fact, all of the pagans I know have better morals than the majority of christians I've known in my life (Not to say anything about christians...) She needs to get her facts straight before she starts spouting off at the mouth, it only makes her look ignorant. And doesn't christianity teach you to love everyone and accept them? I hate when people try to push their own narrow-minded opinions on others. Even children should be allowed to make up their minds as to what they believe, adults do not give them enough credit. If she doesnt want to read the books, fine, but to try and have them banned is just egotistical. She is not god, or any form of a higher power, she needs someone to knock her off her high horse and beat her with the rational stick.
Ha ha ha...I sent her a letter also giving her a piece of my mind! Just keep spamming her and crash her retarded site. Should set her ass back a bit! What an idiot....
WOW, you would think she would catch on by now. harry potter is causing drugs, alcohol, ect. what is she thinking?! she needs to get a grip. wow
A letter sent to Laura Mallory via the contact page at HisVoiceToday.org: ATT N: Ms. Laura Mallory Hello, Ms. Mallory. My name is William Brendel, but my friends call me "Wil". I am contacting you in attempt to make you realize just how asinine, and, indeed, misguided your crusade against the "Harry Potter" series really is. Ms. Mallory, riddle me this: Have you ever actually cracked a Harry Potter book, even to peruse a chapter, let alone read it from front to back? If not, then it's obvious to me, and should be to any individual who considers themselves coherent, that your arguments are based on ignorance. How do you expect to win any arguments in a court senario without being able to site specific, relevant moments from the novels that benefit your opinions. It's just not an achievable goal until you swallow your pride and read the books. If you would, please allow me to inform you that your fears of the HP books leading astray your own or any other children are completely misplaced. I myself am a devout Methodist, a college student who balances class with a part time job reasonably well, who has read the Potter novels several times each. My mother owns her own set of the books and is even more dedicated to the church than I am, and is just as big of a Harry Potter fan. The idea that reading Harry Potter or anything in the vein of Harry Potter could have a negative impact on either of us is just laughable. Laughable! Ms. Mallory, the Harry Potter novels do not glorify witchcraft. Plain and simple. The books chronicle the ficitional (please note: fictional, as in, a made-up story written and read for amusement purposes) tale of a young boy's adventures from the age of eleven through the age of seventeen. The boy in question, even after ten solid years of belittlement, abuse, and cruelty, retains wholesome values, which is the truly remarkable thing about him, not the fact that he is capable of performing magic. This is something of the ...
Well I've just been to her website, and asked them to pray that she actually reads the books... I wrote it eloquently, and presented a reasoned argument. no doubt I will be ignored completely.
Uh .. that's it. THAT'S IT! The first time I heard about her, I laughed. The second time I began to wonder what the heck she was thinking. And I thought she would stop after the court, but did she? NO. And now I'm so bloody tired of her. Yea; I know the books won't be banned and I know that there are more HP fans than people like her, but. . .it hurts to know that there are people like her out there. She doesn't know what's she's talking about. JK would NEVER even TRY to promote wichcraft or satanistic rituals in any way .. she's not like that. I don't know her as a person, but every HP fan knows that she isn't like that. Laura Mallory, just give it up. Why does it bother you that children read HP books? It's not like it has anything to do with you anyway. It doesn't hurt you. Stop bashing others opinions, stop ... aahhh just stop it! and begin TO READ THE BOOKS! I promise you will have a different opinion afterwards. I know she will ever read this, but I don't care . .I feel like hitting something right now. Drugs was in schools maaaany years before HP came. It is NOT violent and NOT satanistic. HP made me a better person, and I know HUNDREDS who also got a better life after reading it. Begin to look around and you will see that it is her to say. Nothing you do can change it. HARRY POTTER FOREVER !
OH LOOK!: Mallory writes, "deceptive, exciting, children-friendly packaging of witchcraft in the Harry Potter series, our youth today view witchcraft not only as good and fun, but also as harmless fantasy." So she admits it herself, that we BELIEVE it is harmless fantasy. Just thought I'd point that out :)
Laura Mallory. Do you know what? I love her. Listen, without her I wouldn't have a continuos spurge of comedy. She makes me laugh everytime she tries to ban HP, personally... I hope she continues 'trying' to ban the books. That way we get an unstoppable source of comedy.
what`s this womans address? hmm? lol.. im going to box up the HP series and send them to her. AND, if she doesn`t reply to my nice message i sent her.. keep sending them. =) she is bonkers. completely bonkers.
LOL harry potter enforcing gangs and drugs? that's hilarious.
First off, what should I say to her? Any ideas?? (Non-violent please) Secondly, how does Harry promote drugs and gangs in the classroom? I do not see any evidence of these, unless she believes pumpkin juice is addictive. Also, I am a christain myself, and even if the books were "Evil", it probably still wouldn't be that bad to read them, as long as we do not do "Evil" things. "What an idiot! Now we hav a way to contact her i think he should all send her threatning messages saying we'll put curses on her unless she stops her stupid campaign!" Er.... That may not be a good idea. It may just make her more passionate for her campaign...
jesus man give it a break. I'm obsessed by the books but why on earth should I be using drugs? or being violent? yeah kids will if you forbid them to read HP, I would freak out too. Get a hobby -__-
Someone should just REMOVE her kids from the school and put them in a christian school. That would solve the problem and we wont hear from this lady again.
Okay, we get it that you don't beleive in fiction, okay, well what about other books, that are fiction, like Eragon, or Lord of the Rings, is she doing anything to have those books taken off of the shelves? Anyway i am a christian also, what is the point for reconciliation then? For people who don't know what that is, it's when people confess their sins to a priest, and they have to say like 15 hail mary's or something like that. IF you want to live that way, make a time machine and go back to the 1600's, where the books wouldn't even exist
she even accuses HERMES, Percy's owl to be a demonic symbol. and when did she get the right to talk in gods name. come on, I'm not even christian and I don't even do that.
I just opened my internet browser and the first thing posted under the news was - not something about Laura Mallory - but a report of how people are protesting the war in Iraq. Not that I didn't know this already, but I saw that there are worse things going on in the world than what Laura Mallory claims to be happening to kids reading books. Until there is an article on how kids ARE becoming more dangerous or whatever due to Harry Potter, I won't believe it. there are more important issues out there right now.
Can't concerned parents just tell the school (or teacher) that they don't want their children to read a Harry Potter book if a teacher assigns it?
Well, I know this is a wastee of button pushing but I'm gonna say it anyway. All those things that Mallory stated that wizards and witches fantasys promote, like being the reason for violence, drugs, gangs, addictions, perversions in schools ... Err HELLO, All those things have been around allot longer than the Potter books.
Um, isn't Jo a Christian? Anyway, this is so frustrating because her reasoning is SO ridiculous! She hasn't even read the books! She should be spending her time working against something that really does go against God's will, not against a fictional story. Jo is right, did any of you join the Wicca religion after reading the books as a child? No.
This woman is absolutely ridiculous and, in my opinion, represents everything that is wrong with America right now. I wrote her a fairly nasty letter on her website, and I hope that she reads it.
Ha ...My priest reads Harry Potter.
I actually went to the site and wrote a very nice comment for Mallory. I told her that she was giving Christians a bad name, and that if she would actually just please read the books she would realize that millions (billions!) of people are learning positive Christian values and morals because of JK Rowlings works! I just hope that she will actually read the comments...
that is so retarded. if she doesn't want her kids to read them then she doesn't have to let them read them. but why should the other kids in school have to suffer.
Ms Mallory is kind of pathetic. say the books did promote witchcraft (which they most certainly do not) how would she even know considering the fact she hasnt even read them. Im Christian and you dont see me going crazy now do you. Harry Potter is an awesome book and if she just read them she would see that it isnt promoting witchcraft. There are some tv shows and stuff that show "witches" blowing up buildings and stuff. I dont watch these shows but i have seen comercials for them. I could understand how someone like Ms mallory could think of that as promoting witchcraft, but not Harry Potter. If she read the books she would realize that it isnt like those other witch things, where they are sort of evil and attack things: she would realize that there is a much deeper meaning and that in it there isrnt a single piece of any of the story's that would motivate me to attempt to do "witchcraft" or whatever she thinks we are going to do. She should seriously give up, or read the books at least. I recommend to her, (not like she is going ot read this o anything), but I recommend to her to read the books before she "attacks" the Harry Potter books any more.
Here was my comment to her...kinda long, though. Dear Mrs. Mallory, I just have a few questions to ask you. Do you believe that children know the difference between fantasy and reality? And if so, since Harry Potter is a fantasy series, shouldn't children know the difference? (They do, by the way.) Never once in the books has it mentioned the word "wicca," "occult," "coven," or any words of the occultic type. I have Wiccan friends, Mrs. Mallory, and every one of the will claim that the evil witchcraft that you claim is in the books is not ANYTHING like what they do in their covens. So, as the papers say, if you haven't read the books, how can you have all of these claims against the series if you know nothing of what's in the books first hand? You're spouting lies to anyone who would listen, and for it, you got voted the Idiot of the Year by the Washington Post. That's an achievement. JK Rowling herself, in response to the question, "Do you believe Harry Potter promotes Wicca," she replied in a 2001 interview, saying: "That's not true. Not once has a child come up to me and said, 'Due to you I've decided to devote my life to the occult.' People underestimate children so hugely. They know it's fiction. When people are arguing from that kind of standpoint, I don't think reason works tremendously well. But I would be surprised if some of them had read the books at all. Witches and wizards are a huge part of children's literature, it'll never go away. I don't think it will ever ever ever go away. Hundred years, two hundred years' time there'll be another kind of wizard story." Of course you're going to say, "Well, she's the author, and of course she'd try to defend herself." But if you're going against Harry Potter, why not attack Lord of the Rings, the Chronicles of Narnia, the Redwall Series, or Star Wars for their use of the Force? There are wizards and witchcraft in all of them, whether by a different name or not. If you put the people of H...
I can't stand people like this. Way to tell her Jo, but it'll take more then that to shut her up. That woman sounds like my grandmother. :(
http://petitionspot.com/p etitions/banlm/.......... .READ THIS PEOPLE! GO TO THE PETITON SITE! SOME ONE STARTED A PETITION! FINALLY!
if she would just read them she might see why people like them so much.
she has a website???!!!!!!
this lady honestly makes me want to cry. The things she's said have been so hurtful. If I ever meet her in real life I would probably burst in to tears at the sight of her just because it would actually affirm in my mind that mean evil (yes i'm calling her evil) people like her actually exist. I hope one day she realises that she's wasted so much of everyone's time. and Mugglenet, I applaud for not posting anymore news about this woman. She doesn't deserve the attention.
I can't believe I just spent 10 inutes of my life writing to her! Man, that's insane. I told her that if interesting books that contained magic in them were a crime if they got kids to read throw me in jail. Also that if reading Harry Potter made me a non Christain, I was just screwed since I sacrifice goats and drink their blood on a daily basis. Man, stupid people never cease to amaze me!
all i have to say is that she's not only insane, but ignorant...
WHEN LAURA MALLORY PASSES AWAY WHETHER IT BE IN 20 YEARS OR 60 YEARS I WILL TAKE A PLANE AND ATTEND HER FUNERAL DRESSED AS A WIZARD AND PLACE THE POTTER BOOKS ON HER GRAVE.
I went to her website and started laughing. Honestly, even though its pathetic how much Mallory wants attention, it also is rather amusing. =P
what a freak lets unite and pelt her with hate mail!
I posted a message on her site after selecting the category for the message 'website problems'. My message was about how I had a problem with her website.
Thank You Laura! I now realize why I wake up in the middle of the night with mud on my clothes and my window slightly open! The occult is coming in through my window and forcing me to do drugs, be in gangs, and be a pervert! How exactly is HP related to drugs now? Or gangs, or violence. I mean, Harry must be a pervert. I mean, he and Ron did try to get into the girls dormitory! And Harry is addicted to helping his friends! Shame on him! He might possibly do drugs. So now we know what they're hiding in all that treacle tart! And lets not all forget here! HERMIONE CAUSES WOMEN VIOLENCE!! It's hilarious to read what she says, but it's getting slightly obnoxious. The only thing wrong with America, is her trying to take away our rights. And that we eat too much McDonalds. When someone tries to take away your rights, people get mad. We're studying about the Articles of Confederation and the Constitution in History right now, and the colonists were afraid of a constitution because they were afraid it would take away their rights. So does she think that everything was just hugs and rainbows before SS came along?? No it wasn't! It was just as bad back then. Possibly worse if you consider music. (jk everyone please don't hunt me down) You know what, I'm sick of this woman. I'm seriously thinking of calling my super-religious aunt and telling her to give me quotes from the Bible I can use against this woman. And if you can't tell, most of the things I said here were sarcasm. I'm done here. ~Lindsay
As soon as I read the title of the post, I laughed to myself. But when I read the words "violence, drugs, gangs, addictions, perversions" I was like, "WHAAAAATT???". You are kidding me. Since when was there ever any drugs and addictions in the books? I admit, there IS violence (but there's also violence in Snow White, when the Dwarves chase the Queen who falls to her death, ho ho ho) and gangs (Dudley's), but it's all been put under a bad light. And if Mallory didn't even read the books, how would she know? I bet she just thought of it all by herself one day "Oh, I know, I'll just blame everything bad on Harry Potter!" I'm surprised she hasn't blamed the fact that there's no world peace on Harry Potter. I mean COME ON WOMAN! Drugs, violence, gangs, addictions, and perversions?? Where in the world did THAT come from??
I went to this ladies website and sent this to her. I think more people need to stand up and say something to her. This is what I sent: How do you people get off saying that Harry Potter ruins peopleâs lives and supports Wicca? Are you honestly that stupid? I am a Catholic, and I firmly stick with my religion, but Harry Potter has changed my life. I am a very good student in school, I am heavily involved in my choirs, I teach in my spare time and I have a lot of friends and family who support and love me. You are the kind of people that give religion a bad name. Almost all of my friends have read the Harry Potter novels, and not one of us has ever smoked, gotten drunk, changed our religion, or gotten into any kind of trouble at school. Instead of just assuming that you are right, why don't you actually take the time to read the books and then you'll see why children have fallen in love. Don't just assume, because it makes an ASS out of you and me, and none of us appreciate it. These books have been my best friend for the past 9 years, and I hate, HATE people like you who give it a bad name. These books have taught me things like, self morals, how to be a good friend, and many other things. When I am having a hard day, or I've fought with a friend or family member, these are my gate way to another world. They have helped me through some really tough times and for you people to step in and say without reading the books that they are a bad influence on children is pure BULL-shhh. You are a disgrace to our society. You are never going to get these books band from schools, because the intelligent people in our world know that you guys are filled up to your eye **** in pure shhh. I am very firm in my religion, but you are the kind of people who make me question it. You are the ones making people leave their religions, not Harry Potter. How can you live with yourselves?
Laura Mallory is nothing but a stupid f***wad. She will not win. I suggest we stop talking about her.
Furthermore, she implies that Potter is the reason for "violence, drugs, gangs, addictions, perversions" in schools nowadays, and that "we need God in America again." I swear when I read this I cracked up laughing that is the stupidest thing I have ever heard in my entire life.
The only problem Harry Potter is causing is the fact that it motivates freaks like her to focus their peanut-sized brain to such a pointless purpose
Oh, I forgot something. Let's not forget that WICCA IS A RELIGION!! It's not about blood sacrifice, or anything like that. It's a real religion. She's insulting thousands of people by saying that it's an evil religion.
