Jo speaks out for libraries
Jo speaks out for libraries JK Rowling is among 150 authors who have pledged their support for public libraries and their growing image problem. A recent study demonstrates that 42% of adults haven't visited their local library in the past two years. Jo compared libraries to the worlds of CS Lewis' Narnia series:

Where visitors could enter a thousand different worlds by jumping into different pools. When I got my eldest daughter a library card I felt as though I had bought her citizenship of that same fabulous world.

Cool. good for Jo. Its true you can go to the libary and yu become a citizen to a magical world.

Posted by amadeus May 15th 2006

Its so awful that libraries are becoming "obsolete." Of course they're not. But, unfortunately, lots of people think so.

Posted by Helene May 15th 2006

I felt the same way when I got my daughters their library cards; yay, Jo!

Posted by belletrix7 May 15th 2006

Go Libraries!!!! Libraries are wonderful, so useful

Posted by fairy_lights May 15th 2006

I adore libraries! I can't understand people who never use them, they're so fun. The sweet smell of books!

Posted by Kaleygurl May 15th 2006

I love libraries!! I'm like another Hermione!! Except dumber...lol

Posted by josie May 15th 2006

i totally agree with jo. i used to spend hours at a time at the library, its where i first began to read harry potter... i've been going to hte library ever since i cud remember, and it really is a magical place.

Posted by Yiffniff May 15th 2006

Awesome, go JK!

Posted by mischiefmanaged128 May 15th 2006

Cool!! At the summer I live at my library, I don't understand why people wouldn't want to go there!

Posted by Gingerbread_Man May 15th 2006

Libraries aren't obsolete at all. I'm in one right now--it's the best place to access the internet for me!

Posted by mariapuff May 15th 2006

Good for Jo! It's kind of scary that 42% of adults haven't been in the library in two years. I go to the library once a week, but then again I'm a kid. But still my parents always go with me to the library!

Posted by GinnyPotter May 15th 2006

i deffinitly went to the library like....a month ago but wow thats insaine...only 42%

Posted by Juliette May 15th 2006

Thank goodness for people like Jo who keep the traditional wonder and magic of reading alive... ESPECIALLY in libraries, too, where there's always something new and different to check out. :)

Posted by PotterISlovE May 15th 2006

Thank god (or whoever) for people like Jo! This world is getting way to high-tech and we need libraries everywhere to stick around!!

Posted by jfebery May 15th 2006

It's great to know that despite the time-consuming book-writing process, JKR is still working to make a big change in society. The fostering of knowledge through our libraries is so important to the future generations. Rant over.

Posted by nysuperstarz May 15th 2006

The library is my sanctuary. Its my absolute favorite place in the world (to a degree) I agree with you jkr all the way!!!! Rock on!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by scurvy_cur May 15th 2006

this can only be a good thing! Good for her, libraries are so important and i truely hope it will do them some good to have the backing of so many authors.

Posted by henrietta_r_hippo May 15th 2006

Well, it is sort of sad that adults don't go as much, but you've got to consider that most adults can afford to buy books. I personally don't go to the library any more, I buy what I want to read, but that's only because it breaks my heart to be separated from my books. I just can't take one out for 3 weeks and never see it again! (I'm such a geek!) I still have school textbooks from classes I'll never have to take again.

Posted by Bagpiper May 15th 2006

Woot for libraries! I love books like Hermione does. I just wish I was as smart as her!

Posted by veelagirl May 15th 2006

Awesome!!! I would practically die without a library- it's important to me to go often. Go Jo!!!

Posted by Sophie May 15th 2006

That's a sweet analogy between the library and Narnia. Good for Jo.

Posted by horcrux May 15th 2006

That's great! I go to the library every couple of weeks (unless i can get a ride sooner lol) I can't believe some people hate it. It feels great there doesn't it? The smell of books and everyone there cares about something other than their appearance, it's so refreshing after being at a middle school for like 6 1/2 hours where all people do is cuss and lash out irrationally

Posted by dumbledoresnotdead May 15th 2006

oh thats cool wheres MuggleCast? it tis the afternoon

Posted by blackheirloomishorcrux May 15th 2006

i love god!!!!!! and i still am a huge fan of Harry potter! any of you like me out there!? let your presence be known! give a woot woot! and great for Jo!

Posted by dinky_diddy_kins May 15th 2006

Books are good. They are even better when they are arrainged using the dewey decimal system.

Posted by hermy1011 May 15th 2006

she's so great. she not only writes amazing books, she speaks out for everything she believes in and makes a difference. and by the way, i find the dewey decimal system really confusing.

Posted by loonz May 15th 2006

lolz of course jo wud have all that to say about a library but yeah i love my local library but i hadnt had time to visit it the entire year! =( i used 2 a lot tho. i heart books! :P

Posted by DecemberDrops May 15th 2006

I was just at my local library today! I love libraries; they are some of my favourite places in the world and good for J.K.R.!

Posted by hummingburdd May 15th 2006

o thats awesome! i really like how she described it...very accurate =] i lvoe the liabrary...it's always just such a peaceful/content place...

Posted by trueligth May 15th 2006

I know what Jo means, a book open different worlds and you can go to different places. One thing that I like is that you do not need a passaport to visit this worlds and you are always welcome too it.

Posted by scarlet_and_gold May 15th 2006

yay for jo! i love that, citizenship to the world of literature. yeah, i would read all day if i could, and pretty much anything i can get my hands on too, although i must admit, i usually buy my books, and can't go into a bookstore without buying a book. i prefer to own my books so i can dog ear them without feelign guilty. as dumbledore says, a well worn book is a high complement to be book :)

Posted by slytherinprincess922 May 15th 2006

very cool. i go to my library alot, tho i dont usually send much time there, i just go in pick up my books that are on hold and then check out. the people who work at mine arent the nicest people in the world so i just order everything online. i have even memorized my library card number!!!!!!!!!

Posted by that_girl May 15th 2006

man, i love libraries. yay for jo.

Posted by caitieMEEP May 15th 2006

YESH! Its good that someone like Jo cares for the little causes, like public libraries. I also really enjoyed her whole girl body weight issue. Go JKR!

Posted by dobby_rocks May 15th 2006

Yeah Libraries are awsome, i use to go all the time during the summer when i was younger. Now i have so many books at home that i gotta read, but there are a few books i plan to look at , at the library

Posted by Snuffles May 15th 2006

I love going to the library! I go there, like, almost every week. It's great! Everything is free!!! It's quite amazing. It's great fun to go there and...check out the HARRY POTTER books that I don't have.

Posted by districtsleeps_alone May 15th 2006

I've been visiting the library more frequently lately and I have to agree with what Jo and others say. Some people may have found Harry Potter in the library before it became big. They really are wonderful places.

Posted by WickedSmile May 15th 2006

I love walking into the library, it excites me. And I'm with Jo on this one, The Chronicles of Narnia rock!

Posted by Sariza May 15th 2006

Yeah, libraries rock! Good for you JKR!

Posted by potterlovver814 May 15th 2006

I think that it's absolutely wonderful that JK is speaking out and supporting libraries. Public libraries recieve little funding and it's mostly from private benefactors. It's great that she's a wonderful writer, yet an fantastic role model and citizen as well. Great job, Jo!
