Jo speaks out for libraries
Jo speaks out for libraries JK Rowling is among 150 authors who have pledged their support for public libraries and their growing image problem. A recent study demonstrates that 42% of adults haven't visited their local library in the past two years. Jo compared libraries to the worlds of CS Lewis' Narnia series:

Where visitors could enter a thousand different worlds by jumping into different pools. When I got my eldest daughter a library card I felt as though I had bought her citizenship of that same fabulous world.

Cool, it's good that an established writer has come out in support of libraries instead of saying 'No just buy my books instead'. I love libraries, I volunteered in our local one last summer. Personally I bought the HP books but borrow most of the others, and last summer when HBP came out it was impossible to see it on the shelves!

I read everything that I like reading in my library, then I go out and buy the books I want. Then, when I'm finished with them, I donate them to the library. So it's a nice cycle. =P I read like...constantly. I'm obsessed with books. So, I think it's sad really that a lot of adults don't take the time to go to their library, but I guess their lives are really busy. They're missing out though.

What an awesome comparison! It's so true... Ah, Jo, we love you!

Yeah, the 42% with no kids. Grace

Both of my younger children (9 and 6) have their own library cards and they are constantly asking to go there, they love it so much. My 9-year-old is a bookworm, much like Hermione Granger! My 6-year-old has just learned to read and wants to go and get his own books out. I love going because I have always loved the library, and now they've made it better by allowing coffee and sodas to be brought in, as long as they are covered somehow! It's my happy place, next to Starbuck's!

That's really wonderful. Some kids never read for enjoyment, and only pick up a book for school assignments. Besides her popularity, JK also has...a lot of money and more importantly, a whole lot of influence. Go Libraries, and go JK!

I love my library C: I'm so glad that JK is attracting attention to them - although I hope this doesn't mean that my peaceful library is going to be suddenly full of loud annoying people xP

Libraries are our friends!!!!! Reading is fun!!!!!!! I spend a ton of time at the library, and most people admitt that i'm very close to normal! (That reminds me, I have a couple over due books...)

Posted by UncreativeMuggle May 16th 2006

I love the library, I got there once or twice or every two weeks or so. Free new books, and free new movies, who could ask for more?

Posted by Oldblue May 16th 2006

Well, it's about time! After using nasty Madame Pince to tarnish the images of both librarians and libraries for years! I often wondered whether Jo was bitten by a librarian at a young age. Thank goodness librarians remained supportive of Harry even when Jo was not supportive of them.

I know that the use of libraries are down and I don't understand. I read more know than I ever have. I read when I was younger and have fuel the love of books since. Libraries are great. I have a book mark that states: A book is a wonderful journey. Books can take many people to places that they can never go. It also stimulates a person's imagination. They is nothing a child can not do, especially with reading and imagination.

Posted by thechosenone May 16th 2006

yay, Jo! I mean, where would we be without libraries? I've read out almost our entire branch....

Posted by Sirius May 16th 2006

This is pretty cool, I like the bit about a library card being a ticket to other worlds.....JK is basically singlehandedly keeping libraries and reading books an important part of kids' lives. I am actually going to the library tomorrow, so yeah.

I agree with Maheema, libraries are definitely good for a number of reasons. Especially with hardcover books being so expensive nowadays, it is sometime s just easier and cheaper to borrow books.

Posted by jess May 17th 2006

I love in Gravesend. I hope she supports the campaign enough to come and open the new library!

Posted by jess May 17th 2006

And teach me to spell. Then I would say that I live in Gravesend rather than love in Gravesend. Although, theoretically, I love in Gravesend too..

I'm glad that JK Rowling is taking an interest in libraries. But I wonder, would she have taken the same interest if she wasn't "rich and famous"? I love JK's stuff, and I love what she's done for herself and her daughter, but you gotta wonder. As of late, I am in Library Club, a group responsible for working in my high school library and checking in/out books. We put books away, file magazines, etc. And recently we've been going to the Public Library across the street to read to elementary students. We try to better our community libraries, but you wouldn't believe how much we're scorned if we're in Library Club. They {other students} tell us we're losers and geeks if we work in the library. It's so sad how libraries are slowly debanding for computers and stuff. Did you know you can download books? Yeah, and that's REALLY sad, cause it just means kids are even lazier, and all they do is get on the computer and read what they want. They don't have to go to the library, get a book, then read it. I know when I got my library card I was so excited. I felt like I had access to the entire world. If only the entire world knew how very important libraries are... Kudos to JK for her books and her support of libraries. Now to get more people to respect something that is truly valueable.

Posted by gryffingirl99 May 18th 2006
