JK Rowling sues eBay
Unauthorized copies of the Harry Potter books have been sold on the Indian version of eBay, and JKR has now obtained an injunction which prohibits illegal copies of her work being listed. This court order is binding until the hearing resumes on May 23rd.
Rowling's legal representative stated, "If they can do it in this case then they can do it a lot more. This is the first time eBay has been compelled to take measures to prevent e-books being sold."

Whoa, that's interesting. And kind of weird...
If anything deserves not to be pirated, it is the Harry Potter series. I totally back Jo, I hope eBay loses this case and has to pay.
3?
OMG!!!!! I can't believe it! How shocking!
thats interesting! OMG!
oh darn
whoa!!! i knew she didn't like eBay selling fake signed books, but wow...
Good! eBay should have been on her side and defended her.
Good for her! Go get 'em, Jo!!
I think this is really good. That she takes a stand!
Wow! Good for you, Jo! =)
Woah, I didn't take her for the suing type, but it is only fair.
Oh good! Stand up for yourself Jo!
Man. I'm so glad, it is really unfair for her. Thank goodness. Can't wait to see the outcome of this. Anyways... GOOD JOB, JO!:)
hmmm.... this could be interesting. Two international Giants [so to speak] going head to head..... I am in full support of JK, but this is going to be a tough battle to win..... Good luck! :::boycotts Ebay:::
i can't believe some people thought they could get away with selling those!
Urgh. Poor Jo. At least we know it won't make a difference with book 7. :P
I do feel for jo, and think it is a shame for her and her work, but i think it should be the resposibility of the person selling the merchandise, and not ebays, problem. There's about a million things for sale on ebay, how are they going to figure out whats fake and not fake.
i dont want to sound offensive or somthing but here in Pakistan and maybe in India the original versions of harry potter books are usually very expensive and are rarely bought by anyone its after the release of the pirated versions that people start to buy these books......they dont want to hurt Jo but they just cant afford buying books which have prices higher than 1000 rupees
Not that Jo needs any more money...but serves eBay right!
eh... Who cares?
I doubt JK Rowling is doing it for the money, but having pirated and forged copies of your work is a complete slap in the face. Let's face it, these books are something that will keep a piece of her alive forever. And when she's long gone, Harry Potter will be a big part of why the world remembers her. And having people trying to make a sneaky buck off her life's work is very insulting. If they story I'm writing right now were ever picked up and made a fraction of the success of Harry Potter and some jerk off people were doing this to me, I'd do the same thing.
I totally agree with you bennyjoe8. Dont mess with Jo people!
bennyjoe is totally right. the thing here is not the money -although that is some pretty important deal to consider- but the fact that its her intelectual property! i think she's got the right to defend what she's created! any argument of the sort that she's already rich etc misses the point.
Yeah...she should be sueing the people are selling the stuff...not ebay. People do this every day there, on different items. It's gotta be really hard to see what's stollen or not.
"I do feel for jo, and think it is a shame for her and her work, but i think it should be the resposibility of the person selling the merchandise, and not ebays, problem. There's about a million things for sale on ebay, how are they going to figure out whats fake and not fake." if ebay profits from the selling of illegal merchandise [which, they do] then they are liable. ebay doesnt provide its site free of charge to people looking to buy and sell - they arent just hosting the site, they are making money off virtually every transaction that takes place. so yeah, it is their problem. and with the amount of money bring in each year, they can easily afford to hire some people who are assigned to this sort of task.
I'm an Ebay seller and I get absolutely infuriated when I see supposedly SIGNED HP books listed. 99% of these are forgeries...it's terrible how much people waste on them. I'm glad she's doing something about it. These sellers are just scam artists. Of course, some are people selling the forgeries they bought on Ebay...and some really don't know they are forgeries. It's sort of sad. There are a FEW legit signed JKR sellers...you really have to figure that out beforehand. I would recommend doing some EXTENSIVE research.
It's true that it's individual sellers that are doing the selling and not eBay, but that doesn't matter. They're still the ones that are allowing the selling to go on. It's their site, their medium they're allowing others to use to sell things, so it's their responsibility to put a stop to this. Plus, if I remember correctly, they ARE making money off of what's sold; it's how they're able to turn profit. Even if no money is turned over in this suit, it should at least show them that Rowling is dead serious about them putting a stop to this.
Go get 'em Jo!
You go Jo! I hope that eBay loses their case. They are raking in lots of $ just from other people wanting to sell on their site. I think to avoid another law-suit, they should take some of that money and hire people who will watch what os being sold. The people selling are required to provide an address, so bust them at their home. Ban them for life on eBay. For all that eBay is raking in, they sure aren't being wise with their money. They should have stopped the forgeries. They should have seen another law-suit coming. Now, they have to deal with the best author and greatest person ever in history: JKR!!!
I am all for Jo defending herself against people trying to sell illegal copies of her hard written work but, Ebay is a 2 BILLION dollar a year company with hundreds of thousands of auctions going at any one time. I think it is unrealistic for them to attempt to police every one of them.
GO JO! I have been screwed over by Ebay once before. I bought something online that was described as "Authentic". It was a cheap knockoff. Please be careful when buying from them. It happens a lot more than people think. ESPECIALLY with Harry Potter merchandise, such as autographs and whatnot.
Good for her!!
Jo should go after the individuals pirating her books, not ebay.
I was a bit taken aback when I read that she's suing ebay, but she has every right to try and prevent her work from being smuggled and sold to the public much earlier than the release date. Plus, those copies are unathorized. The person might buy a copy and spread all the information about it on the internet months before July 21st.
If I had spent the last twelve or so years of my life writing a series, I wouldn't want illegal copies of it sold either. You go, Jo!
Plus, other people are fighting against ebay to (Tiffany in New York and Christian Dior Couture in Paris) because ebay never takes responsibility for what they allow on their website, and so many people are allowed to sell bootleg copies of anything and get paid alot of money. Luckily Rowling made a injunction that now FORCES ebay to policce the sales of what goes on their website. Of course, ebay had no comment other than they are not responsible for what the auctioers do. Ebay has always had these problems about infringing peoples work, they only make an effort to stop it when someone comes along and sues thrm.
Yeah, I guess JK should seek legal action against eBay... it's her right. But I feel a little strange saying so, because this reminds me of what is taking place in the music industry too. Some artist releases a CD, someone buys it and makes it available to everyone with a computer, and then the artist gets upset when they don't make as much money as they thought they would through sales, or gets upset for some other related reason. I really don't feel that I can say JK should win her suit over forged copies of her book, when I don't really care about ethical practices when it comes to obtaining music... Whatever. it's Jo's right to do what she wants, but it's not a big deal for me whether she wins or loses.
Good job Jo. If I were to publish a book, I wouldn't want it duplicated like that. Good for you!
Tsk tsk, shame on you, eBay. Hope Jo wins.
Excellent! Way to go, Jo.
She's going about this the wrong way. All you need to do is get an assistant to sign up for the Ver0 program. It takes about 20 minutes. After that, all you have to do is e-mail eBay the # of the guilty item.
There are too many guilty items to do that. She's been dealing with this for years. She is right to do what she's doing.
woo go Jo! 'bout time something's done about this
i thought that that mask was a toy dog, lol, i was wondering, 'since when did jo walk around with a toy dog on her shoulder?' then i saw it was a mask and i wondered the same thing about the mask...
It's about time!
Good for her!
Yeah, seriously. I'm glad she's taking control of this.
ANDREW'S BIRTHDAY... is the day the hearing is resumed. Well good on ya, JK. You deserve a lot of rights, and eBay is just scamming you. But they can't get past Jo!
