JK Rowling sues eBay
JK Rowling sues eBay Jo Rowling previously wrote on her website about her request for eBay to adopt preventative measures against the sale of illegal and forged merchandise. However, the online market giant was unhelpful.

Unauthorized copies of the Harry Potter books have been sold on the Indian version of eBay, and JKR has now obtained an injunction which prohibits illegal copies of her work being listed. This court order is binding until the hearing resumes on May 23rd.

Rowling's legal representative stated, "If they can do it in this case then they can do it a lot more. This is the first time eBay has been compelled to take measures to prevent e-books being sold."

The indian {version of} ebay!!! They did not! Go Jo! [even though i'm indian, that doesnt matter in this case because HP RULES!]

Posted by sticky Feb 26th 2007

go jo!!!!!! woooo!!!!!! i don't really like ebay anyway...i prefer amazon.....

Posted by SiriusEqualsLuv Feb 26th 2007

ALL RIGHT GO JO!!!!!!!

Posted by flipgirl Feb 26th 2007

Go Jo! I like eBay but that's meaqn to sell unauthorized stuff like that, especially if it's HP!

Posted by silverphoenix21 Feb 26th 2007

punkchick_draco_luver, I'm Indian too and I was totally shocked at this, although I don't actually live in India. Good of Jo to finally take some action against this, ebay deserves it! Go Jo!

Posted by hp_bookworm Feb 26th 2007

YOU GO JO!!!!!!!!! You're J.Rowling, don't let anyone mess you around.

Posted by Padfoot_SiriusBlack Feb 26th 2007

Dont mess with Jo! You rock Jo!

Posted by Katskradle Feb 26th 2007

That is why i don't trust or support web sites like ebay. Anybody can go on there and sell whatever they want, as there are very few strict guidelines. You can't be sure you're actually going to get what they advertise. It's scary. I'm glad somebody is finally trying to do something about it. Go jo!

Posted by Rayen Feb 26th 2007

Pirated coppies aren't exactly great, but how exactly is ebay supposed to gaurd against it? It's not like they ever lay hands on the merchindice.

Posted by my_ceddyteddy Feb 26th 2007

I never really had taken a liking to "eBay"

Posted by HPbrownLove1 Feb 26th 2007

niceee Jo!! i hope you win. but i dont really see what banning it will do since what theyre doing on the internet is illegal anyway... so making it illegal to sell pirated copies AGAIN wont make the people selling it change their mind. i know i sound a bit confusing, but get what i mean?

Posted by waterpolo1324 Feb 26th 2007

all she needs....more money lol

Posted by sondra Feb 26th 2007

JK is seeking legal action for her fans . They sell forged signed copies of her books on e.Bay.She has said not to buy from them.

Posted by demonchild13 Feb 26th 2007

You go girl! I'm glad she has decided to sue eBay because it really is sad when people try to degrade her work by selling copies that are supposedly signed.

Posted by dobby101 Feb 26th 2007

Posted by hpintwense06 Feb 26th 2007

YEAH GO JO!!!!!!!!!!!! I really hope she wins!!!

Posted by lupinsgirl15 Feb 26th 2007

wow. go JK. that's kind of suprising though. but you have to realize there is always gonna be people put there who can figure out how to get stuff for free. how do you think Napster or Limewire got started. but good for her. its good to win a battle once in a while. but she won't win the war.

Posted by Glubad Feb 26th 2007

Its India though...they sell illegal pirated versions of the books on the streets. My cousin gave me one once... I'm not saying its bad to sue them, and I'm not saying I hate India (Desi Pride man!) but I am saying that it happens alot there...and no doubt in other counrties as well. No matter how it happens, illegal sales will CONTINUE to happen in other ways. Not to be a pessimist.

Posted by sorceress22 Feb 26th 2007

Go Jo!! You show them!!

Posted by Susan_Bones Feb 26th 2007

O.o wow....but you know, ppl will go on selling those other ways besides ebay.

Posted by Northern_light Feb 27th 2007

Well, they should not sell pirate copies... But then it isn't really e-bay that is selling them, so I'm not sure that it will make such a big difference. This might be a little off topic, but I can't help to wonder... you are defending Jo's right to not get her work copied, but how many of you people are downloading music illegally? About the same thing, isn't it?

Posted by Glaedr Feb 27th 2007

EBay have always been spineless money grabbers. It's their responsibility to ensure that none of the items being sold on their site is illegal. It's bad enough them "not noticing" but for them to refuse to do anything after she's told them that the items are absolutely not genuine is disgusting.

Posted by otto Feb 27th 2007

If Jo doesn't go after the individual sellers, they'll simply go elsewhere to sell their pirated copies. Suing ebay will accomplish nothing.

Trust me, every corner there is something illegal happening. Its what makes India india...

this is simply pointless and stupid on Rowling's part. 1. little kids should not be bidding on anything on eBay by their own. they're parents or guardians should be aiding them when on eBay and telling the kids what is real and what is fake. most adults would be able to know this if they applied they're brains a bit. NEWSFLASH!!! Rowling does not sign very many novels. Get the facts in your head and stop crying and moaning. educate yourself and stopping wishing others will come to your rescue. 2. secondly, the genie is out of the bottle. the harry potter eBooks have been around for a few years now in many formats including the very popular PDF and MS Reader. do you really think this is going to stop anything with this litigation? the sellers will just disguise the material in another packaging format and manage to make money off of it. also, the illegal eBooks are never going to disappear with the popularity of this series of tales. 3. Rowling has the right to sue because of copyright, but honestly, it's not like the lady is worrying about her next meal and shelter any time in this current life. she's basically lowered herself to being a greedy miser like Metallica did back in the Napster lawsuits. And guess what happened to pirated music after Napster closed downed? It actually grew exponentially because more peer-sharing sites took Napsters place. 4. Rowling has already done enough for warning kids and parents about pirated material on her own website and in interviews. She could simply be applying all this money of hers to charitable orginizations and have it do far more good than this course of action. if anyone needs to go after illegal or doctored copies of Harry Potter novels, it should be the publishing companies who stand to lose the greatest amount of money here. 5. Rowling may have a lot of money, but eBay has time and lawyers on their side. i guess 5 to 10 percent of all eBay sales are of questionable origins. my guess, a l...

I know i definitely would if i was her! thats not fair to her. she works so hard on her books!

Posted by AlyGranger Feb 27th 2007

Call me clueless, but since this is an international case, will it take place under America's laws, or under England's laws. I did an essay on International computer ethics, and this is like that. Different beliefs and morals in differnet countries collide and can cause suing to be difficult. But I think in both countries it's considered wrong to sell forgeries and illegal copies. Although the fact that it's also Indian copies of the books might make it even more complicated. Poor lawyers!!!

Posted by AlyGranger Feb 27th 2007

By the way, those who say JKR is suing for money are crazy! We all know she's well off, so stop suggesting that she spends more time donating to charities. In case you clueless people haven't noticed, JKR is highly involved in many charities including helping with cancer patients and single mothers. She is a wonderful woman and wanting to protect people from a site that is allowing forgries to be sold is perfectly within her rights!

Posted by Glubad Feb 27th 2007

Cool! Someone actually agreed to my point! People actually read this thing!!!!!!

Posted by Serinity Feb 27th 2007

~giggles~ Good for her!

Selling fake signed book... leave all the pirating, Ebay has no class on this.

Posted by Glaedr Feb 28th 2007

"She's going about this the wrong way. All you need to do is get an assistant to sign up for the Ver0 program. It takes about 20 minutes. After that, all you have to do is e-mail eBay the # of the guilty item." - JK Rowling -was- contacting Ebay and informing them about these products. The fact is that Ebau refused to do anything about it. I don't think JK Rowling is worried about the money, but there will be a lot of fans disapointed who have paid a lot of money for autographed items who will be very upset to hear that those items are fake.

Some people are saying that it is not ebay's fault that people are illegally selling jo's books on the site. I think both ebay and the people who are selling the pirated books should both have to pay up because obviously, what the pirating people are doing is totally wrong. But ebay should also be cautious about what people are selling on their site.

Posted by ams Feb 28th 2007

Ou go kick their lieng butts Jo!*not to morons who think she needs to stop wasting her time and that she is greedy* I HIGHLY DOUBT SHE CARES ABOUT THE MONEY IT IS MORE OF THE PRINCIPAL IT IS RATHER INSULTING TO HAVE FANS ACTUALLY THINK THAT THESE PIRATED VERSIONS(SOME OF WHICH ARE BOGUS)ARE AS GOOD AS HER LIFFES WORK.AND eBAY IS AIDNG THEM SO THEY DESERVE A PUNISHMENT SINCE THEY DID NOT SLISTEN TO HER WHEN SHE ASKED NICELY

"I don't think JK Rowling is worried about the money, but there will be a lot of fans disapointed who have paid a lot of money for autographed items who will be very upset to hear that those items are fake." Two words best remembered: Caveat emptor - Let the buyer beware

WOOOO Thats awesome!!! GO JO!!!

Posted by go_ginny_girl Feb 28th 2007

Ebay's going down!

Posted by Vivian Mar 2nd 2007

If Ebay is happy to make lots of money from the goods sold on its web site, then it can jolly well put in the resources to make sure that the sales are honest. I have no pity for Ebay. Go Jo!
