I think it's a bit too soon for reviews, as there's clearly still some editing to do, but I've no doubt this will be a wonderful film--
One statement: If you don't like the books and you don't know what is in them then you cannot critique what was is left in or taken out of the film. PERIOD
I luaghed out loud at the " they could aqueeze this into another film" comment. This reviewer needs to get a clue.
I don't see the need to get mad that the reviewer isn't a fan of the books, but it's clear that he doesn't really understand the storyline, about Voldemort, about Umbridge, etc. I don't mind if he hasn't read the books, as long as he can grasp the point of the movies. Still, I look forward to a review by someone who has read the books as well; that will tell me more about whether it will be good or not, at least to my point of view. Still, I'm glad we got a first review. It says a little about what to expect (cough Dumbledore kicking Voldemort's butt cough). ;-P
I don't think this person was very qualified to do a review since he has not read the books and obviously didn't know what he wast alking about...of course Dumbledore didn't defeat Voldemort in the end scene...there are two more books genius! And I think if he was dreading seeing Umbridge on the screen again, then the director did his job well seeing as we ARE supposed to hate her, and to make the audience hate her as well is getting the point across. Anyway, I can't wait to see the movie for myself, I'm sure I'll like it a lot better than the last one.
This guy sounds kind of like an @sshole. I don't like how he wrote the review.
Ok. This review is so dumb. He has only read one book. And, the first two books and written much different the rest. Jo's writing really progressed and changed over time. Those were the first two books she wrote, so of course they are going to be alot harder to get into. This person hasn't read the books and doesn't understand the significance of anything. Blah, Ignore this review.
I've already had a comment, #50 or so, PLEASE, PLEASE, contact Mr.Moriarty about this review, just clik on his name within the review site. That'll thank him. Please do this for JK.Rowling and all her characters, I'm sure they will all appreciate it,,,,
"squeeze this into another movie?" HELLO! its the longest book out of the entire series (unless dh is longer) How could you squeeze two years into one movie? This guy is way off his rocker!
2 1/2 hours!!!! SWEET!!! :-D the more the merrier!!!
Who's this genius to call Jo's writing mediocre? If he rates his own writing as 'good' then no wonder he doesn't like JK's. His review is all insolence and stupidity. What a shame that such a person was so lucky as to be invited for a preview of HP - what a waste of an occasion. I'M SO ANGRYYYYYYYY.
what the heak! only 2.5 hours?? AHH! That's not long enough! like TruePotterFan I say the more the merrier! I made a petition to have the movie longer (take out the spaces in the link): http://www.petitionspot.c om/petitions/Harry_Potter _Order_of_Phoenix
ok first of all, I haven't finish reading it but I think I wouldn't be to much of a friend to who ever wrote this because everything that he/she says that is bad is what I think it's great!! XD
I have to say that since the person writing the article wasn't a Harry Potter fan and still liked it in spite of himself, that I think that this is going to be one H@#$ of a movie!!! I can't wait until the release.
I can tell that most of you guys are not happy with the review, and I'm not either, but even though we all disagree with a lot of what he says, and his writing is terrible, there's no need to be angry! I'm just glad that review's been written at all...! So EMELL, pleas DON'T email this guy to defend the Harry Potter series, he hasn't done anything wrong!
im not likn this guy and who ever insults Jo infront of me doesnt deserve my attention!!!!!!! some of the things he said was just completely stupid and im not going to take most of it as the truth!
I guess his review is okay since it's unbiased, but to criticize the story when he hasn't even taken the time to read the books (and in so many words called the story mediocre and childish) essentially criticizes the film. Yeah, he was probably impressed by the FX that were there and the plot that presented itself, but I feel that his review cancelled itself out. I'm still excited regardless of his mediocre B+ rating and horribly uncool spelling of a Shakespeare character. Whatever--we all can't be film critics/literary aficionados.
OMG OMG I WISH I HAD BEEN THERE!!!! Well now im going to have to be extra careful about what I click on. I dont want any unwanted spoilers I HATE THOSE. lol i have had bad experiences with spoilers before. Lol ok im done.
While it is nice the movie recieved a B+, what I want to know, is how a book lover would rate it. After all, he can only rate it so badly if he didn't know what was left out.
Well, this reviewer is not very informed. But since he seemed to think it need to be cut (which I highly doubt it does) that sounds good for us Potter fans. I really believe this is going to be the best yet.
I'm not reading the review! But from looking at all your comments, I can't believe they would even put someone in there who hasn't read the books! I suppose they do need some impartial views haha. OH yea, JK is realll mediocre, she's just one of the most successful writers of all time...... Anyway, sooo excited for the film, and don't really listen to critics anyway (that's just one person's opinion!)
Spiolers? what spoilers? I didn't notice any spoilers in the review. So it should say spoilers if you hadn't read the book...
The man was reviewing OoTP as a film, not as an adaptation of a book - his lack of knowledge of the book series is really neither here nor there. I think he makes some good points, and I can definitely imagine that the film drags in the middle; the book did the same, and that was down to Rowling's editors not doing their jobs. I do think it interesting that he raised the subject of LV turning up at the end, as he has done in some form from the start of the sereis. To the casual viewer/reader this is obviously going to be repetitive, and I just hope that the film is good enough on its own to stand up in the mainstream against the length, and what some viewers will see as its sheer predictability; school, magic, battle, bad guy not-quite vanquished. It is a continuing format those who have no interest in the books - and review the film - aren't going to be thrilled about, and it will be interesting to see what reviewers make of it come July.
Hah. Why is this person critiquing this movie without reading the books? Okay, sure, you can say you didn't like certain parts, just as someone can say they don't like certain parts of a book, but to say that they shouldn't be in the movie... the scenes are in the movie because they were in the book! The director didn't just *decide* to stick in a random, boring scene. Sure, the movie isn't action-packed or fast-moving all the time, but that's because the book itself isn't that way. And to suggest they just combine it with another movie... >shudder< I can't wait until a review by someone who's actually read the book comes out.
that's so cool! can't wait to watch that movie =D but i think the leaky cauldron's review is better...they tell more stuff from the movie...one thing i hated is that Ron is going to be a minor caracter in the movie >.< i hate warner.
I would really like to trust this review, as it was pretty good, but I find it hard to believe that I would agree with someone who disliked the books. Besides, my main concern with the movie is that it will live up to the books, and we obviously cannot get that info from this review. Also, how could the plot from OOtP fit into another movie??? It's the longest book (in my opinion the best), and is pretty full of action. Either this movie will be awful or the reviewer is terrible. I'm going with the latter.
i cant wait to see what ron says after the kissing scens =p
Well, if a guy who didn't like the books liked the movies, and if the didn't leave TO much stuff out, it should be an awesome movie...
I LOVE the books and I am a fanatic of them [NO DOUBT] but I am going insane until July 13. WOOHOO!
I agree with everybody else. I am in no way impressed by this review. With this one it is especially important to understand the plot of the entire series, so it really isn't going to make much sense to those who haven't read the books (mainly because they cut so much from the first four movies). This one by itself does not have a strong central plot, but provides a good background for the series as a whole. Therefore anybody who has not read the books and does not understand it before going into the theater has very little chance of interpreting the events and what they mean. I also would like to say that I'm not sure I can agree with his (and many other's) opinions on Evanna. Though I may change my opinion after seeing the movie, I honestly do not believe that she is going to be much of an actress. She doesn't have to act much to be Luna because she already is so much like the character. I'm not trying to bash her or anything, but until I can see her in a role other than Luna, I don't believe that she could make a career in acting. As for this idiot's thoughts on Umbridge and Grawp. Maybe if he wasn't so ignorant about the story he might understand it, but for the time being we can't listen to what he says on them or anything else other than the few bits of effects that were already present in the film when he saw it.
Er...just wondering... do we know if the scene with Arhur and the snake is in the movie? Been wondering about that for a while now, and I really hope it is..
what is PG???
It better be hp_and_me! That is the reason why he tried to rescue Sirius. It shows that those visions are TRUE, and not just a dream.
the reviewer's complaining too much -_-;; does he/she NOT know that umbridge is SUPPOSED to be annoying?
PG stands for parental guidance, and it's a movie certificate here in the UK. And back to the review.... I totally don't agree with this either. Only read the second book and he thinks he can comment that JK's writing is "mediocre", I mean he really doesn't have a reason or right to say it. And as for the movie, I'm ignoring everything he said and I'd rather read the review of a TRUE Harry Potter fan who can compare the book to the film, and can really point out the films points. Even after this review, I'm still as excited as ever over Ootp!!!
Wow. That review seriously sucked ass, and the movie will probably too(after reading the answers Carlos gave at Leaky), to us book fans. He obviously doesn't understand the importance the fifth book has to the whole storyline(and an user called kash wrote a very lame story about OotP, too-- come on, didn't you READ, kash? there's much more to the fifth book than Umbridge and the Grimmauld house!). I mean --what does he expect will happen in the last two films if Voldemort dies in the fifth? Assuming, of course, that he/she even knows there will be seven in the series. We can't expect anything better from someone who doesn't even know about the horcruxes, I guess... Well, other than all that, good for Evanna! And it really stinks that they don't have Quidditch; the Quibbler article; the Mrs. Weasley's Woes Boggart; St.Mungo's; Prefects etc etc, in the movie. Though I guess it won't be as bad for the audience that hasn't read the books. They just don't know what they'll be missing. But still-- Cho as the snitch!? Jeez...
I will definitly love the movie, but the guy who wrote the review is a moron. Seriously, why did they even ASK him to review it. He says the first best one was the third, puh-lease! Urgh, I feel mad now....
They should have two reviews. One for the book fans, and for the ones who don't read tho books...
What a (Insert swear here)! You can't critisize what should or shouldn't be edited out if you haven't even read the books! we LOVE grawp, and if he was taken out of the movie, I would have to become violent. Umbridge is supposed to annoy you to death, thats her job! And as for J.K. Rowling being a bad writer, i have to ask this person if their mother ever dropped them on their head. Why should we listen to their review, when they probably couldn't even tell you how many siblings Ron has. I pity them for not being able to appreciate the magic and depth in this seiries. Leave the critisizing to the Harry Potter fans! we deserve it.
Okay, that guy needs to read the books! "Umbridge was annoying" well that's how she's supposed to be! And the reason why Voldie isnt defeated is because THERE'S 7 EFFING BOOKS!!!!!!!!! Holy crap. This guy shouldnt be a film critic. No matter what, us TRUE Harry Potter fans, will love the movie. Even if sucky film critics think it sucks.
I do think that a fan will appreciate the nuances and goofy parts more than he did, not being a huge Potter fan. But don't gripe at him, it was his opinion. And while I do admit to yelling "Reatrd!" at my computer screeen a few times during reading the review since he clarly doesn't understand it all, he at least gave it a good grade, which is GOOD. So to those who are complaining, stop. It's not gonna win an Oscar, but it will still be good.
This guy doesn't sound like he has any idea what he's talking about. He's never read the books, and has no concept of the characters beyond 'good', 'bad', and 'funny'. His grammar is horrible and half his review doesn't make sense. I'm sorry, but I'm not taking this guy's word on what the movie is like. I'd enjoy a review from, say... a Mugglenet staffer. How close is it to the book? Is Umbridge as evil as she is in the series? How spot on is Harrys character? I don't want to hear the fight between Dumbledore and Voldemort was good beacuse this guy just likes to watch wizards duel. Oh...and if he doesn't want to see anymore of Voldemort, he probably shouldn't see the next two movies....he comes back....IT'S A SERIES. I think it will be a wonderful film. Put it this way: WB is not going to give the movie to a director who's going to put it in the trash, and waste money. This is a hugely anticipated film that will make billions. I have evry confidence it is in good hands. I look forward to seeing it!!
Technically, he didn't say the movie sucked, He just said certain parts sucked...
Woooah I'm not reading that .. *backs away* I'm against any kind of OotP (and Deathly Hallows) spoilers .. :D I flipped out when I saw this though! *fangirl moment*
I'm sure that most of us will give us a better grade than a B+. The reviewer clearly didn't have a good grasp of the story or the depth of the series. Throughout most of the review, he didn't seem to know what he was talking about. GOF will be hard to beat, but I know that OotP will be great:.) Can't wait to see it:.)
I'm not gonna lie that was pretty much useless. A review by a person who has never even read the books doesn't help us real Harry Potter fans all that much....
Not the best critic is he? And I wouldn't exactly rely on someone to do the OOTP movie critic who says he doesn't like Rowling's writing... Where do they find these people?! Where do they find the people who employ them? "Another Voldemort confrontation where he is not completely defated" ... might as well have seen Shrek 3!
I don't fault the reviewer for being a typical viewer and not a fan of the series, but he did not have a good grasp on the storyline at all, if he is so angry about Voldemort not dying. He also could not possibly understand Grawp either, and that irritates me. He did say the movie was gonna be good though, and I agree with him. For Potter fans, that means that we'll love it. For normal fans, that means it is worth seeing. I don't take the review seriously. First of all, the errors in the spelling and grammar alone makes me think this person is not the best person for the job. Secondly, saying that Harry is less of a p**** is not something a reviewer would normally say when reviewing a movie.
"It is not horribly slow but it does drag, with the current running time being approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes there is definitely some editing that could be done to make this problem disappear." why would we want the humungus 5th book to made into a shOrt puny movie???i want the movie to be AS LONG as needed to be like the book!i don't care if its more than 2 hours long!!! i want (mostly) every thing that was in the book to be represented in the movie! 2 hours and 30min is a good length in my opinion. this "reviewer" is just being stupid! he didn't even read any of the books! he doesn't like umbridge and wants her scenes removed..YOUR NOT SUPPOSED TO LIKE HER and removing her scenes will ruin the movie! i dont know why they even let this non-harrypotterfan see the movie! they should have let a REAL fan see it...like me!!! that lucky @^$#*&
... Uhm... ok, I resolved not to read the review in case of the spoilers (duh!) when this news came up, but seeing that complaints that I read in the comments section, I took the temptation to read it and all I could say is... Oh. Honestly, the guy is entitled to his own opinions on everything he sees and hears, I really respect that, he is his own person. Though honestly, I was kind of annoyed on how he worded JKR's work. Calling it mediocre... ugh... he didn't even read the whole series, heck, he didn't even read the first one! Well, I guess we all have different tastes. He said this, "We have yet another Voldemort confrontation at the end where he is not completely defeated. This is getting tiring, I really hope this stops now, I am sick of the main villain showing up at the end and then not being completely defeated only say the same thing can happen again at the end of the next film," well duh man! The book does go on until the 7th book, and Voldemort is a powerful wizard, if he dies early in the book what about the others? What would Harry do then? So that one just cracked me up, though, I'm not taking his word and I'll just have to see the movie on my own and judge it on my own, I don't even read reviews anyway, so I'll wait for the movie.
