wow.. i dont really know whaat to say.. he sounded like an idiot if you ask me. and he kept spelling radcliffe wrong! (R-A-D-C-L-I-F-F-E, got that buddy?)
I don't like the reviewer so far i'm in the middle of reading this and right now i want to write him a letter tell him how much of a moron he is. Umbridge is SUPPOSE to be annoying and edditing would just take away from the movie but, this guy thought Goblet of fire was the best so of course he would think so. You NEED the scenes with umbridge i really really really hate this man right now. How would he know if luna was great he never read the books. Okay you just don't call harry potter a pussy its just somthing you DON'T do!!! This story deffinatly could not have been squeezed into another film considering it is the book where we find out tons of information that is important to the book of course it isn't going to be as action packed at GoF becuase theres no triwizard tournament or anything i really really need to stop reading this becuase i am getting angrier and angrier. The voldemort confrontation is part of the book!!! and they didn't confront voldemort in PoA OR HBP and they only confronted his memory and CoS so shows how much this guy knows. The character of harry potter is more interesting in the book but could you acctually read the books? of course not. Hagrid's brother and umbridge scenes are apart of the book and the story. MEDIOCRE WRITING!?! this man wouldn't know good writing if it danced naked in front of him wearing doby's tea cozy! =] okay i think i'm done now.
always take movie reviews with a grain of salt, especially when they come from someone who - admittedly - doesn't even like the books or cherishes the details like all of you do. and remember, it's the books that brought you here. without them, there would be no movie to begin with. it's all about perspective, people. will it really ruin your love for harry potter if you don't enjoy the movie fully because this person didn't do this right, or that character was left out, or this character took that characters line? it may make it less enjoyable, but will it turn you off of HP? if so, then you're only mildly interested in the first place. no one is going to see this movie and love every single aspect of it. i'm personally going to wait til the editing is done, the movie is released, and i have seen it myself to judge it. i'm looking forward to seeing evanna as luna, and helena as bellatrix and it certainly sounds like imelda is doing her job as umbridge! and i certainly cannot wait to see alan on celluloid again...yummy! :) i have had a love/hate relationship with this book from the start. i threw it down my hallway when i finished it, and cussed a great deal, but i cherished every word jo wrote. when DOES a story become literature instead of just children's literature? i'm in my thirties and i love harry potter books.
Sigh.I hate when complete morons review movies. This person had no idea what she was talking about and I am especially mad at this comment: "I am not an avid fan of the series, and I think the subject and mediocre writing of Rowling stops it from ever being an all around amazing series" How ffin retarded can you be! And she wants them to edit out Umbridge.....HEEEELLLOOOO O she's one of the main characters. And she said they should have put thesescenes in another movie because it wasnt good enough to be its own movie I mean come on it's one of the most action packed books. And whats the point of Voldemort dieing before the series ends. So whoever you are just DIE! And please get a better taste of movies.
I find it difficult to take seriously the comments of someone who labels Rowling's writing "mediocre". There are so many fans - why in the world do they do these random screenings for people who don't know anything about HP? It makes sense to do that for other movies that have no history or background - but HP is a bloody phenomenon! So frustrating.
I think everyone bashing the guy for critiquing the movie needs to take a step back and breath, and get a little perspective. Books and movies are two different mediums, thus, should be critiqued separately. The gentleman did a good job critiquing the MOVIE. If you have a problem with his assessment of the movie, so be it...although I find it laughable that anyone can have an opinion on his critique of the movie when they have not seen the move themselves. I will say that his comments on JKR's writing didn't add anything to the movie critique, and thus, should have not been included.
well it was a good review, i guess. BUT MEDIOCRE! what?????that is crrraaaaaaaaapppppppppp. i wish someone whos acctually read all the books reviwed it though...
I AM SO MAD AT WHOEVER WROTE THIS REVIEW hagrid n umbridge are essential so stuff it i jsut want to punch her in the face and umm if u actually READ THE BOOKS u would no voldemort cant die yet then there will be no point in the books u idiot!! n then she goes n calls jkr writing MEDIOCRE!! can we plz hunt her down n burn her house plz lol nono but i want O AND OMG so i went to go see the number 23!!! n i didnt get the screening things AT THE RIVER EAST TOO!! and i went to the movie theatre the day of the screening and i didnt no i think im going to cry i should have been in there cuz river east is my theatre and i would hve actually appreciated the screening!!!
i'm so excited. i'm disappointed with the author of the critique. i can't criticize him for disliking the harry potter series but why should he be criticizing JKR in his MOVIE critique? uck. i'm scared about umbridge now though because i was really looking forward to her character. well the other review on leaky says that umbridge is good so, i'll listen to that. soooo excited.
Hermes- no big mystery. I was just referring to the Man Bat/ Batman.
Wow... stinks that this guy wasnt a bigger Harry Potter fan... he sounded like he didn't even get the reason Voldemort wasn't getting defeated... HE'S THE BAD GUY. He won't be "defeated" yet, if ever. I'm not gonna rely on him much. He dosnt like how Jo writes? Puh-leese. I agree Emell, next time WB screens a HP movie, find someone who actually reads the books. The movie will be fantastic, regardless of what some random, slightly dull guy who happened to get an advanced screening thinks!
hp5 moviee yayy so excited !!
wow...so this guy obviously didn't know what he was talking about. I laughed when I read the part about how it's annoying that Voldemort is never defeated =P sounds good though. can't wait to see how Evanna does!
omg i want to to check out the spoilers... but im not... grr so hard to resist them!! i just dont want to ruin the surprize of the movie.. o well just 4 more months...
Yeah....this person was right. the whole "Voldemort" thing IS getting old. (yes, that was sarcasm) I mean HELLO! Could they have gotten a bigger dunce to review it? The person was like: "I don't like the books"....and "Voldemort's boring"...HELLO, HE'S LIKE, THE ENTIRE PLOT!!! *gasp* , I'm done ranting now....
i can't BELIEVE this guy said that nothing happened in the film...that's so disappointing because i always though the fifth book was pretty intense and filled with stuff going on! also, the PG rating made me a little mad. if goblet can be PG-13 and ootp ends up being PG..we know there's something wrong.
What is the major malfuction at Warner Bros.? This book was about 813-821 pages long and they have edited down the running time to a measley 2 1/2 hours. It is easy to deduce that they feel a kid can't sit through a three-hour-long movie. Never mind the fact that most Harry Potter fans are in their mid-teens, late-teens, and early twenties...you still have to think about the little kiddies. Never mind the fact that the last movie was rated PG-13 and still made 102 million dollars in the first weekend alone...you still have to make it short for the kiddies. I doubt anyone cares for this rant but I am really getting sick of big studio executives and the filmmakers themselves shortening the running time of a movie based on 821 pages of text just so they could bring in an extra family. Why can't they do what New Line Cinema did and encourage to the filmmakers to lengthen the running time of the Lord of the Rings films so as to be more faithful to the source material? For this entry into the movie series, in the closing credits, they should replace "Based on the Novel by J.K. Rowling" with "Inspired by a Story by J.K. Rowling". It's sickening.
yea erinquinn's right.. if ootp is pg and goblet was pg-13 it means that ootp cant be that good... =/
That was a poorly written review... The guy sounded like a jack***.
This guy is so stupid. He obviously isn't the right person to go and see the movie because he never even read the books and he doesn't like JKROWLING. I wish that i would've gotten to see it. On the plus side, it seems like Evanna is a good actress which makes me really happy because i was worried about the character of Luna...just like this guy said. This guy needs serious help....AHHHHHHHHHHHH Whatevs...i don't really care about the movie that much, only about the book. By the way, 137 days left baby!!
I CANT WAIT BUT I DONT GET IT THIS GUY SAW THE MOVIE LUCKY GUY. AND I BOUGHT ALL THE MOVIES ON DVD HOPEFULLY THIS DOSENT JUST COME OUT ON HD AND ON DVDS TO
Ok...so I never really comment, but this guy totally pissed me off. I think it is such a waste to give people like these tickets to see the advanced screening. Clearly there are people out there who are much better qualified and would appreciate the movie more than this guy. If he thinks Jo is a "medicore" writer, than why is he seeing the movie. The movie is based on the books (duh!). As for why Voldemort has not been defeated, is he not aware that there 7 (I repeat 7) books! I would love to see old Voldymort dead, but if we kill him in the 5th book/movie what happens to the other 2. This guy just wasted space at the theater. That is all.
I am not even going to bother reading the review written by someone who hasn't even read the books! We don't need anyone to tell us the movie ROCKS!
wow! it sounds amazing from th review!! Although it might have been nice to have the review done by someone who has actually read the books, i still can't wait!!
Needia3000 - I feel like Homer... DOH! AND the suspense was killing me! XD
I had to stop reading this review because it started making me mad. I agree with what a lot of other people said on here - this person should NOT be criticizing movies and their quality when he/she hasn't even read the books. Yes, it is very much possible to enjoy a movie and not the book. If that's one's choice, so be it. However, some of the comments made by this person came off like he/she is some kind of expert or something. For example... "We have yet another Voldemort confrontation at the end where he is not completely defeated. This is getting tiring, I really hope this stops now, I am sick of the main villain showing up at the end and then not being completely defeated only say the same thing can happen again at the end of the next film." Umm, hello?! Anyone who has read the book like a real fan of the story can tell you that book 6 doesn't end that way. People like this need to just shut up, eat their popcorn, and enjoy the fact that they're seeing the film before almost everyone else. Don't try to be an online critic when you don't have a basis for comparison!
While I agree with most people that this was perhaps one of the worst reviews of any of the Potter films, I do not think that we as a community should be so quick to bash the nay-sayers. Many people have commented on the reviewer's "blasphemous" comment about JK Rowling's writing style, stating that it was "mediocre." Now, as an avid fan and lover of all things Potter, I think that we should all take a moment to think about this. Is Jo the best writer? No, she isn't. But at the same time, she also isn't mediocre. She just isn't at the same caliber as other authors, such as J.R.R. Tolkien. However, she is a FAR better STORYTELLER than Tolkien and many of her contemporaries. And considering the Harry Potter series may be perhaps the best story told in a VERY long time, I don't think it really matters how well she writes it. The important thing is that she is writing it and that is has touched the lives of so many people. That being said: Jo is a better writer than this reviewer and in the end, I think that matters most.
JK Rowlings mediocre writing skills!! Are you kidding me?
How dare he call Jo's writing mediocre???!! How then, did she become the like richest author on earth by selling her MEDIOCRE stories?? I hate people that judge books that they've barely read. Plus this guy thinks OotP needs more editing and stuff cut out when the producers are barely squeezing the plot into a 2hr 30 min movie? The guy obviously doesn't know the most basic things about Harry Potter, which is obvious from his review, but to real fans like us it's a bit disheartening. One thing I don't get is why are they making OotP PG when they made GoF PG13, and OotP is supposed to be much darker.
this person is one of thouse close minded person that criticis without knowing and that when they saw lupin as a werworlf thought that was dobby. I hate people like that! they talk and talk but they dont make sense. *sorry for the english*
What an idiot! This guy obviously doesn't know how to appreciate good literature, much less, how to rate a film in production. what does he mean that the scene with Grawp should be deleted? He has no right! he hasn't even read the fifth book. And please, stop with the profanity or O will give you some profanity of my own.
What a baffon. Mediocre writing my right eye. Silverphoenix is right. If her writing were mediocre, how in God's name did she become the wealthiest person in the United Kingdom!? People like this drive me crazy. It doesn't make sense that you should be able to critique the movie if you have no appreciation for the story in its original format.
I have a comment for the person who wrote this review. READ PAST BOOK TWO!!!! YOU COMPLAINED ABOUT ALOT OF THINGS THAT ARE EASILY EXPLAINED IN THE BOOK. I HATE NON FANS. GRRRRRR
I just want to agree with what many of you have already said. This reviewer was extremely annoying. Those of us who love the books all agree that this guy doesn't get it. I don't know why on earth he thinks he has a right to say what should and shouldn't get cut out of the movie when he has no idea how important it would be to the fans of the books, much less how important it will be for future books/movies to make sure those parts are included.
"We have yet another Voldemort confrontation at the end where he is not completely defeated. This is getting tiring, I really hope this stops now, I am sick of the main villain showing up at the end and then not being completely defeated only say the same thing can happen again at the end of the next film." Oh this guy rather annoys me. Hes making all these comments about whats annoying and what should be cut but he has no idea how it affects things later on. Of COURSE voldemort is supposed to show up each time. pfft *walks off muttering about Laura Mallory and other non-hp fans*
This was an... interesting review. At first when they said they didn't like the books I was like okay some people just don't I understand but when they said Jo's writing was mediocre... Oh my gosh... I died inside. If there is something more far from Jo's writing... I don't know. Jo is a spectacular writer and I understand some people just don't like magic but come on I don't say Tolkien is a horrible author because I don't enjoy his books. Do away with Grawp. Yea he probably doesn't seem that important in the movie... they never explain anything, but in the book he does play a part. The Umbridge part... I think everyone should cringe when she is on screen but not because she is boring and uninteresting but because we all know Harry or another character had bad luck coming their way. In my opinion not a very enlightening review just complaits about Jo's writing, an unfinished Grawp and a person who does not understand Umbridge's character. The B+ though gives me hope. Sound great!
He doesn't like Harry Potter? What is he doing reviewing it???? He doesn't seem to know hardly anything..... Ah this was frustrating.
"We have yet another Voldemort confrontation at the end where he is not completely defeated. This is getting tiring, I really hope this stops now, I am sick of the main villain showing up at the end and then not being completely defeated only say the same thing can happen again at the end of the next film." maybe we should lock him and Laura Mallory up in a small room with no windows and make them read all the books. then lock them up again and make them read the seventh one once it comes out..... "I am not an avid fan of the series, and I think the subject and mediocre writing of Rowling stops it from ever being an all around amazing series....." ARE YOU FREAKIN' HIGH? JKR has an /amazing/ writing style, that kept me at least from skipping to the end of HBP to see what happened..... How is it only PG? OotP is a lot darker than GoF and GoF was PG-13.... "...That being said: Jo is a better writer than this reviewer and in the end, I think that matters most." (taken from MOONLITELUPINES's comment). who cares wut this guy thinks? we all know that the movie will be amazing. as for him not liking Imelda Staunton's Umbridge, screw him. Umbridge is /supposed/ to be annoying. she's not supposed to be someone that makes people say 'OMFG, she was my favorite character.' she shuts down the DA, makes Harry carve words into his own skin, and is an all-around a**hole.... "This film is not much different from the last entries in the series." hmmm.....let's think about that....it /is/ a different film, there's a different plot. um, does Harry get blamed for Petrifying people again? does he get entered in this big contest that he's not supposed to be in? cos i dont remember that in the book.... anyway, congratulations to Evanna. she's getting tons of great reviews. cant wait to see her (and everyone else!) when i see the movie a trillion times this summer... sorry for such a long comment, btw...
You must understand that the majority of critics reviewing the movie aren't going to have read the books. A movie must be reviewed as a separate entity from a book. So many people keep saying he shouldn't review it because he's not a fan of J.K., he doesn't like Harry Potter that much, etc... however, since he's not even a fan of the series and he still gave the movie a B+ really shows how great of a film it is. I agree that some of his statements were foolish, such as talking about Voldemort coming back in every movie, but a favorable review from a non - Potter fan is much stronger than a review from a preexisting fan.
how cn reading the movie review spoil anything to those who've read the book 5 times? 'snot like there's ever really anything new in the movie b4. Phesh..
Ohh people... I was reading these reviews and I realized that I couldn't have expressed my opinions about the reviewer better than all of you together... It's so nice to know that when someone critcizes what our fandom stands up for we can finally all agree on a same thing... I mean... what was that guy thinking?? Mediocre writing - Jo?!? What a loser. He's the one that can't even write a short paragraph without a grammar error in it... ugh, why do these kinds of people get to see the movie first? They don't deserve it...
im surprised the film is only PG. sirius dies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!! thats supposed to get it up to PG-13 :( oh well. i just hate little kids in the theatre that start crying or disturb the movie but i guess i'll have to deal with it...
I'm glad that someone who hasn't read the books reviewed the film! WE know what is going to happen and can "fill in the blanks" but it is useful to see what the average viewer understands. In watching GOF, my non-fan friends kept asking, "why is the ship sinking?" etc. WB isn't making the film only for us, it has to be understandable for everybody.
Who is this idiot? Never read a book but the second, doesn't like JKRowling's writing, has no clue to who any of the characters really are in the story or how they got there, and yet he dares to critique the film? Only the true fans and readers of the books understand the depth of the situation and where all the character's motivations stem from. And the acting is spectacular by everybody!!!! Horrible to think some fool gets paid to see a preview of OOTP and to write badly about it. Give me a break!
A nonentity gets to see HP . Why did he even write a review. [what an idiot]
I really don't care what the reviews say I am gonna love it anyway. I still love the other films to and people have said some pretty harsh things about them but I just love them to death. Those kids and adults put alot of hard work into those movies and I just love them.
Right on! Emell I wholeheartedly agree this reviewer Sucks! He admits only ever reading The Chamber of Secrets and passing on the rest of the books and is very critical of JKR's style of writing. In my opinion if he hasn't read Order of the Phoenix and doesn't like Harry Potter in general then he shouldn't be giving a review of the film and his unsavoury review counts for nothing as far as i'm concerned. Bah Humbug! I suggest this reviewer reads the books prior to reviewing any movies that are based on them. As a loyal and fanatical Harry Potter fan myself I am really looking forward to the film, Three cheers for JKR.
I am offended. This supposed critic of visual media besmirched an author that I include in my top 20 favorities. I am a literary snob. Forgive me for not following the trend of kissing Hollywood's butt. I did not like any of the movies as much as the books. Take my DVD's but leave the books, please. I understand there is a rift between those that read the books and see the movies and those that only see the movies. Alls I can say is,"Shut up. You should take the time to read the books and garner an inkling of the actual magic Rowling uses in crafting the novels." Hollywood makes movies to make money and sell their weirdo ideals. Rowling writes books to tell a story we all want to hear.
I wouldnt put too much in store by what this person says. Firstly he says he doesnt like the books because of the way JK writes and thats just absurd. I wouldnt trust any review from a person who doesnt like the series because they already have a negative thought about it. It seems very encouraging and we all know its just work in progress but I think it will be the best one of the series so far.
this guys weird.. andt hey had a thing about him in r newspaper and they said how barely anybody agreed with him!! 200th?
