Support JK in her eBay lawsuit
Support JK in her eBay lawsuit As we reported previously, JK Rowling is suing eBay for allowing illegal and fraudulent copies of her works to be sold on the auction site. Jo has managed to obtain an injunction which prevents eBay from listing illegal copies (namely e-versions of her books), which is binding until a May 23rd hearing.

Not only is Jo losing out from the auctioning of illegal books, but fans are being hoodwinked and wasting their money.

Marjorie, webmistress of the MuggleNet-affiliated collectors' advice site JKR's Army, contacted Neil Blair (Jo's lawyer) asking how fans can lend their support. Marjorie has set up a petition, which we strongly encourage you all to sign. We will soon have more ways you can help, but for now, visit this page for additional info.

jkr, i love you. but i tottaly suport ebay and its bootleged copies of your books, and anything fake like that. some of us are to poor to aford the real thing, but would like to experiance it with the rest of the world. take if from a poor girl and her mexican made harry potter blanket she bought at the flea market.

Posted by Silverswan Mar 10th 2007

To be honest I don't really care.

Posted by Hiriledhel Mar 10th 2007

Crazy_for_Harry 5 Well, I *am* bored, but I'm not looking for a fight or to annoy. I am dissenting because I do not support the lawsuit, plain and simple, and I posted because I wanted to make sure another opinion was voiced on this comment board. I've been a huge fan of the books for the past eight years and I don't think Rowling's suing for the money (though I'm sure her lawyers are), but I don't believe in the philosophies behind the suit and I think it will do more harm than good in the end.

Posted by DRx3HP Mar 10th 2007

I think eBay should be held responsible. While it really boils down to the individual selling it, eBay is hosting it. It's their job to make sure such illegalities not to make it to selling point, and if so, they need to take immediate action to remove said listing. I realize not everything will be caught, but if it's a downright copyright infringement or not even selling what is listed... If eBay doesn't want to do anything with it, they are basically just as guilty. -- -- -- -- Yes, someone will find another place to sell, but if absolutely no action is taken, it's going to continue, perhaps become larger than it already is. At least take the appropriate steps to try and stop it the best you can. Like I said, not everything is caught, but make an effort. -- -- -- -- Personally, I find it worrysome that they eBay would not take any action. What sort of credibility does that give them? I think it will decrease people using eBay because how do you know if you aren't going to get scammed. Yes, it's a chance you always take, but seeing eBay being lax about such an issue, what other issues are they ignoring? Of course something like this won't stop everyone, and it probably wouldn't even put a dent in the returning users, but if people get screwed repeated, eventually the word does get around. Just my $0.02

Posted by DCCOMICCC Mar 10th 2007

Hypocrite. JKR is one if she persues a lawsuit with eBay. A lady goes to court to ban Harry Potter books in schools. Sounds like a familiar story to me. eBay is a venue. JKR might as well sue the whole world for being idiots. Just another mindless lawsuit. If she does persue it, I hope her books get banned from schools and denouced. It would amount to the same thing as her lawsuit. Simply stupid.

Posted by Neldorf Mar 10th 2007

Go J.K. Rowling! Take down EBay!

Posted by freakotaku14 Mar 11th 2007

I'm sorry, but I cant mindlessly supports JKR just because I love Harry Potter, like most people that go to this site are. I STRONGLY disagree with what JKR is doing. Ebay should not be the target, but the people that are selling the illegal copies. She could have even worked with Ebay to aquire information about the people. I really respect JKR and love her work, but I just cant support her here. Sorry ^^;

Posted by TimeMachine Mar 11th 2007

freakotaku, DCCOMICCC, if you had read the stories you would know that this isn't the first time JKR has brought this up. She has contacted eBay several times trying to get them to remove their pirated Harry Potter merchandise. They refused to cooperate. Having done my fair share of trading on eBay, I can tell you that the auctions are not very well policed at all. eBay makes money off of the illegal vendors the same way they do the legal ones, and it would cost money to police them, so there's no real motivation for them to do so. If you report something you get an e-mail saying "We'll look into it, but in order to protect user privacy we can't tell you any more", which basically means "We're blowing you off". And nothing is done. And it is a HUGE letdown as a consumer when you recieve items that you thought would be legitimate, and upon inspection turn out to be pirated/forged. Simply because I, myself, do not want to be a pirate. Suing over spilling coffee in your lap is a mindless lawsuit. Suing over a corporation blatantly refusing to restrict (and thus, blatantly allowing) your intellectual property to be stolen and sold with no payment to you and a disadvantage to an unknowing consumer (especially considering many of these customers are kids) is perfectly legitimate.

Posted by Quiscalus Mar 11th 2007

TimeMachine, I couldn't have said it better myself!! Nicely put. :)

Posted by iz24 Mar 11th 2007

Number 9969. Go JKR!

Posted by mummy_the_house_elf Mar 11th 2007

Did anyone besides me notice this? ** 6100. Laura Mallory No No Those of you that read this god awful book will burn in hell forever!! ** She still doesn't get it!

Posted by EowynRowena Mar 11th 2007

I saw it too, but, come on - you don't seriously believe that this was really her ;) But I do agree on her still not getting it - I wonder if she ever will, but that's another story ;)

Posted by Dragon_queen4ever Mar 11th 2007

Anything I could have said to the people who act like this is stupid, was already put into perspective by timemachine, so I won't bother :)...ALSO, CassMaxwell, how could be to poor to afford the books, but you can afford a computer and internet access? Just a thought...

Posted by natrah Mar 11th 2007

wah.. 11100 and it keeps on going..

Posted by modenadude Mar 12th 2007

I love how after not even five posts of Jo being on the Billionaire list, this post about suing eBay shows up. I'll support eBay thank you very much, as eBay represents a community where anything goes - disabling eBay disables oh so many things. Not to sound like an ass, but it's up to the buyers to understand what they're buying - it makes not only their lives easier, but the sellers' too.

Posted by Okirun Mar 12th 2007

Personally, I'm kiiiiiinda of the opinion that it's up to the buyers not to screw themselves over on this sorta thing, but I'll still sign... no point standing against a perfectly fine cause.

Posted by Mimbletonia Mar 12th 2007

consider it signed. #310 dahlin!

Posted by silverphoenix21 Mar 12th 2007

Go Jo! Get those eBay people!

Posted by otto Mar 13th 2007

Over 12,000 signatures so far. So does anybody have any idea what this petition is actually supposed to accomplish?

Posted by Fidgette Mar 15th 2007

thats stupid. she needs to come down off her high horse. ebay can't catch a few people out of billions. boo hoo. Klenex tissues should sew Jk for pissing and moaning all the time.

Posted by july21tillhp7 Mar 17th 2007
