American 'Deathly Hallows' 784 pages!
American 'Deathly Hallows' 784 pages! Scholastic announced today that the US edition of Deathly Hallows will contain 784 pages, making it the second longest book in the series behind OOTP!

Since the US versions of the books are published in a larger font and contain chapter pictures, this should mean the UK version will be around 700 pages long.

The US version of the book will have an initial print-run of 12 million, and the publisher has also revealed that each of these copies "will be printed on paper that contains a minimum of 30% post-consumer waste (pcw) fiber."

The President of Scholastic Trade Publishing and Book Fairs said, "Scholastic worked hard with our suppliers and the Rainforest Alliance to secure this extraordinary amount of recycled and FSC certified paper for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. As a company with an ongoing commitment to protecting the environment for this generation and generations to come, we believe producing this book and our future reprints of Harry Potter books with a minimum of 30% pcw recycled paper is an important publishing decision."

I'm pretty happy with that. I wanted it to be the longest book yet, but I'm happy with second.

RyAn2006, I'm sorry you find my remark insulting. It wasn't intended to be, I wasn't even disagreeing with you. I was merely pointing out that, surely, you feel ever so slightly sad that the series is finally over? Do you not feel that bittersweet sense to the announcements as the release date draws close? The people who want a much larger book are simply expressing their sadness that the end is in sight in this way, that's all.

Posted by TruePotterFan Mar 20th 2007

aww man!! i wish it was longer!! this makes me so depressed, only 784??? imagine how fast we finished OOTP! now that this is finally coming out and we know the pages, THE END IS NEAR! :-( this makes me sad....

Posted by Frey Mar 20th 2007

The Brittish version is about 680-700 pages, I suppose. I'm happy with it. It's the second longest book. Thank you, Jo!

Posted by love_u_harry Mar 20th 2007

Thats great! Of course, i would love it to go on forever, but this is ok too...glad its longer than GoF.

Posted by Helene Mar 20th 2007

As I just voted--"Perfect"!!

Posted by LadyM Mar 20th 2007

one word: *squee* :-D

Posted by RyAn2006 Mar 20th 2007

mastermike apologies indeed-yes of course i am awfully sad its so close to the end but my point was merely that looking at how sad we all are-can you imagine how Jo feels. She is so happy with book 7 as she has said that i think we should see that as a sign that there is no need to worry about this book being to short and lacking closure. Anyway i perfectly understand the way people are feeling-just trying to encourage some happiness! Anyway american people here should be happy-they have a few more pages than us people here in the UK!

Posted by lonewriter Mar 20th 2007

at least we know it's not going to be short. I just can't wait to READ it.

Posted by fanaticallyobsessed Mar 20th 2007

Oh and I also wanted to say to all those who read the Scholastic HP books- Now you know...on the 21st of July, 2007...when you'll be turning to page 784, you'll know everything...absolutely everything...there is to know about Harry Potter...well almost everything...and everthing important! Posted by queeny Mar 20th 2007

Posted by DobbysRevenge Mar 20th 2007

I would read it if it was 500 or 1500 pages. I love the seris. Great work JKR, you have done an awesome job!!!!!

Posted by silverphoenix21 Mar 20th 2007

YAYYYYYY!!! Long book, alright!!! Though I wouldn't mind if she had made it a 1,000 pages long...

Posted by DumbledoresArmy88 Mar 20th 2007

ahhhh i cant wait for July 21st!! :) :) :)

Posted by snuka Mar 20th 2007

I thought we'd get something around GoF in the local translation - 610 pages - but cool! More Potter for the end.

Posted by dobby101 Mar 20th 2007

I CANT WAIT!!!!!!

Posted by darkhairhermy Mar 20th 2007

Wow! I really wanted it to be longer than OotP, but I'll get used to it :). Now all we need are the covers and we're all set until the book comes out. Yay!

Posted by Padfoot_SiriusBlack Mar 20th 2007

Awesome! More than i wanted! Awesome! Go Jo!!!!!

Posted by Heather25x Mar 20th 2007

Yes! I am so glad. I don't think anybody expected it to be longer than Order of the Phoenix. I wish it was never ending! At least there's more to read hehe. I'll probably finish it in 2 days lol because i know i won't be able to stop reading it.

Posted by HPDH2007 Mar 20th 2007

They said OOTP would be 890 it was 870, they said HBP would be 672 it was 652 so this book might be 764 I hope its 784 though and for some reason I think it will be because I don't remember scholastic announcing anything for 5 and 6 retailers all had 890 and 672 as the page counts for 5 and 6 and they were both 20 higher than the real total. 50 PAGES MORE THAN GOBLET IS FANTASTIC I thought the beginning of 5 dragged a bit (that first week of school seemed to take 100+ pages and it was kind of boring until they started recruiting members for the DA in the hogs head. ) So 784 sounds perfect to me.

Posted by adri278 Mar 20th 2007

Ah, that's awesome. I can't wait!

Posted by live_the_magic Mar 20th 2007

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO It needs to be one hundred million pages, or at least longer than OotP. Well, ok, I just don't want the series to end. :(

Posted by WickedSmile Mar 20th 2007

~does happy dance!~

Posted by Arya_of_Ellesmera Mar 20th 2007

OH MY GOSH OH MY GOSH OH MY GOSH!!!! soooooo excited...haha, my guess on how long it would be was off by 20 pages; I thought it would be 764 pages (the exact halfway point between OotP and HBP), so it is actually longer than I thought it would be...theoretically, it should take about 9 hours of reading to finish (at least in my case)...now all that is left is...the cover...getting closer and closer to the end...there will be sobbing.

Posted by HPDH2007 Mar 20th 2007

I think they include the chapter listing pages, acknowledgements, etc. in this count so maybe 764-770 odd pages is more accurate for story content

Posted by kissmysnitchumbridge Mar 20th 2007

THis book obviously can't be too long. I'm excited!

Posted by Ticci Mar 20th 2007

Yesss! Thanks Jo :)

Posted by SilentBob Mar 20th 2007

Well, it's longer than HBP, so I'm satisfied. I just hope she gave as much information as she could in that of pages. There are a lot of loose ends to tie up.

Posted by ChoChang Mar 20th 2007

My Goodness. The editing is DONE, it's over! JK can no longer do any modifications. It's OVER! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH HHHH

Posted by starlight Mar 20th 2007

:D Fianlly, some more news on the book. I'm happy, its not unbearbly long, but it's not short. Pretty much perfect!

Posted by Chronopulis Mar 20th 2007

First reaction..darn, it's not long enough! But after figuring that J.K. Said it was her favorite book. The best possible ending there could be. So I'm more than happy with near 800 pages. It'll take me all of my day of to read it, and then bam, it's over. I know she did it justice, so I can only wait to see how it has come out.

Posted by iluvdubai Mar 20th 2007

....u knw..all the books of hp series...i finished each book in one day...but i dont think i will finish DH in one day...but its will be summer n skool will be off sooo....maybe i can

Posted by HPBrad16 Mar 20th 2007

I iwsh it would've been the longest, but i'll take it.

Posted by Grub Mar 20th 2007

Cute :) 700 pages for book 7.

Posted by soccerluver13 Mar 20th 2007

Well I just cracked open the OotP book and saw how long DH is going to be.. I WANT IT LONGER! Lol. I'm kidding. It seems like a decent size but... I want the cover!!

Posted by GramSybil Mar 20th 2007

I am so happy, I am setting up my chair, table and lamp, so I will be ready.

Posted by RyAn2006 Mar 20th 2007

Jo can still edit. Final editing is still ongoing. Scholastic are ahead of Bloomsbury because they have millions more books to print so they work faster! Bloomsbury should announce something soon enough!

Posted by gaminggirl Mar 20th 2007

aww i want it to end!!! NO!!!!!...i guess thats a good amount of pages even though i want it to last FOREVER!

Posted by googie77 Mar 20th 2007

i very excite, i very excite, too bad it can't be longer though...

Posted by marissa813 Mar 20th 2007

hmm. 784 is definitely not anything to be whiney about. although i secretly hoped it was 48975243928 pages. but that's definitely substantial reading.

Posted by SOS90 Mar 20th 2007

784... Yeaaaahhh. That's so good but i hope to know the italian lenght soon, given that i'm italian.

Posted by Kareen Mar 20th 2007

-Jaw drops- 784 pages!!!!!! WOOT!!!!!!!!! Awesomeness!!!!!!

Posted by RuSirius Mar 20th 2007

I can't wait to read the book! I was hoping that it was longer but 784 is good enough!

Posted by Fuzzykitten99 Mar 20th 2007

I am glad it is as long as it is. I want a book that will take me more than 2 days of consistent reading to finish. On the recycled paper issue, maybe that is why the book costs so much-the kind of paper they are using to print it is much more expensive to produce for a durable thickness to stand up to high speed printing that book pages go through.

Posted by harry_p_7 Mar 20th 2007

OMG!!! YAY!! i am sooo happy, but still, i wish it was longer than ootp! o well, at least its almost 800 pgs. hmmmm, i wonder how long the delux edition is? i cant wait to get my hands on this book, cause when i do, ill never put it down!!

Posted by LindaW Mar 20th 2007

*Squee* If you're unhappy, think about it: she wrote this in a REALLY short time. Personally, I'm ecstatic.

Posted by dementor Mar 20th 2007

crud i wanted around 1500 pages lol but i suppose thats a bit demanding :) so im happy with 784 pages. i was hoping it'd be longer than OotP but atleast its longer than HBP. wooo hoooooooo. now to only wait for the book jacket.

Posted by ps911325 Mar 20th 2007

omg- 7 + 8 + 4 = 23!!!!!!!

Posted by Clamshell Mar 20th 2007

AHHHHHHHHH 784 is too short. Make it 7784 and we're getting there! Heh. No, it's OK. I CAN'T WAIT. 784 pages of Harry left till there was none. AHHH I LOVE HARRY POTTER TOO MUCH! No, wait, I love it just enough.

Posted by performingmonkey Mar 20th 2007

I'm just pleased it's longer than GoF. HBP was the right length for what kind of book it was, and DH was always going to be longer with all the details Jo has to cram in. Even though it isn't as long as Ootp I think it's going to be a lot more action-packed. A lot of the extra pages in Ootp are filled with stuff like the cleaning at Grimauld Place, Hagrid's Tale and the Grawp parts. I can't see anything being that leisurely in DH, it should be quite intensive like HBP was (even though the romance stuff (if you can call it that) felt like a side-story that could have been cut to make the book even shorter). I re-read PS recently and it's amazing how much plot and action is crammed into the book even though it's the shortest of the series. Just go back and see how much Jo put in and how excellently. There isn't a slow moment in the whole book. That's how I want DH to be. A final ****-to-the-wall HP book!
