'Deathly Hallows' cover art released!
Scholastic and Bloomsbury today both revealed the covers for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows!

- United States Children's Edition - view here
- United Kingdom Children's Edition - view here
- United Kingdom Adult Edition - view here

You can also view a high-res version of the entire US jacket HERE.

Bloomsbury also announced today that the UK edition will be 608 pages long. As previously announced, the US version of the book will have 784 pages, making it longer than GOF. However, the UK page count makes DH shorter than the British GOF (which is 636 pages long). We presume this is due to an increased font size for the US version.

UPDATE: Arthur Levine, the US Potter editor, spoke this morning on the TODAY show about the American cover:

"We're seeing Harry in a very interesting situation. Readers will find out exactly what the situation is.

"When I was reading it, I had both the excitement and the power of the book, and the plot, driving me forward. But I was also feeling a little sad. It's the last time."

When Levine admitted he "sobbed and sobbed" while reading Deathly Hallows, he was asked the following:

"That means someone we like dies, doesn't it?"

"Well, it means it is a very, very emotional book," he responded.

surrounded by people behind the veil, not detah eaters?

Posted by christianaeg Mar 28th 2007

oh yeah and i forgot that both covers have curtins.... see my above post!

Posted by gymgrl Mar 28th 2007

is that griffindors sword that ron's holding??? so it is a horcrux.....

Posted by DanielRadcliffeIsSEXY Mar 28th 2007

Harry is going to live. He will survive. He's a survivor. Survivor: Hogwarts. Coming soon to BBC America.

Posted by hpintwense06 Mar 28th 2007

christianaeg - i posted that idea about the curtains about 100 or so comments ago lol. but i am glad i am not the only one who noticed it though.

Posted by kingyouth412 Mar 28th 2007

noliesjustlove: that's funny, you beat me. Everyone: I don't see harry's scar in either of the covers and I'm zooming right in on his forehead on my computer. In fact, there's is a piece of hair covering where the scar should be. It's a wierd thing. Maybe a coincidence, maybe not.

Posted by padfoot_4_eva Mar 28th 2007

yea i saw teh Today show this morning and i saw the rest of the cover...(warning maybe spoilers) The cover shows harry and voldemort, and there on a stage with curtains...meaning a chacter dies..because in plays when a major character dies, the curtains go down.. that and im gussing that locket is the Slytherin locket, meaning harry finds it and if you want to know where i think it is, reread harry potter 6, then 5 (well mostly when Harry is Sirius's house). but you have to make sure you read every sentence. besides that..ill shut up now:)

Posted by Violet_McCready Mar 28th 2007

Incredible covers. I am very happy that my book will be like the UK version, even though I am in Canada. I think the cover is incredible :) It will be a sad read however. Knowing it will be the very last Harry Potter book....

Posted by harrys_wand Mar 28th 2007

Inteerpratation: a portal exists to voldys headquarters. kreacher can take the trio to the portal and so he does. harry + lv face off using wandless magic.

Posted by gymgrl Mar 28th 2007

wow....i just now saw the whole jacket....i didnt notice that before....i couldnt figure out what everyone was talking about with voldemort & harry not holding wands & the curtains........wonder what their reaching for.....???

Posted by rachelli_00 Mar 28th 2007

Hey! I just wanted to point out, if noone has yet, that Ron isn't actually holding the sword... an elf is! Could this be Kreacher? Maybe Dobby? And it looks like ( on both covers) that they are at/in the veil or something. Any thoughts?

Posted by in2somethingood Mar 28th 2007

oooo!! i like the uk adult version best!!! but the american one is good too...but i dont care much about what the cover looks like, as long as the book is brilliant!!!!!

Posted by noliesjustlove Mar 28th 2007

rachelli_00: lol, about 100 posts back there was a bunch of "ITS KREACHER, NOT RON HOLDING THE SWORD"'s, but yeah, we've basically come to the conclusion that its either dobby or Kreacher. And the veil thing... yeah I'm still totally in for that theory.

Posted by TheOtherMinister Mar 28th 2007

The US kids edition is good; the fact that the adult edition is just a picture of Slytherin's locket probably means that the locket (and the design on that locket is awesome) will play an important part in the plot; but the UK kids edition is my favourite! That's the one I'm buying!

Posted by christianaeg Mar 28th 2007

hpintwense06: Yeah i saw that.. on my other post i had other similarities... I actualy noticed that and was scrolling down the page to comment when i saw your comment lol!!

Posted by flipgirl Mar 28th 2007

I cried when I saw it online. I just bawled. It's so sad but happy. I'm crying right now actually. *wipes tears*

Posted by darkhairhermy Mar 28th 2007

No. Freaking. Way. I can't believe this. That blurb on the back of the full cover picture wasn't very descriptive, but there was a castle, obviously Hogwarts, which means that it will play a huge role in the book (but I knew that already :) ) Okay now I'm going to go back and read the rest of the comments. I just couldn't contain my excitement. AAHHHHH!

Posted by Quantummilkshake Mar 28th 2007

Didn't the US version of Sorcerers Stone have curtains around it as well? And they were the same color! AND it was at sunset. lol. I also find it interesting that the US version is done in Gryffindor colors.. (scarlet and gold) coicidence? no?

Posted by JulieT Mar 28th 2007

i. cannot. wait. but seriously... i love this cover; i'd venture to say it's my favorite of the 7 (US edition, anyway...). i love reading all the theories.... keep them coming lol ahh can't wait

Posted by donnaryley Mar 28th 2007

Well, all the covers have their points, both pro and con. Let me address a few points I saw in previous postings. First, the difference in pages between the UK and USA editions is easily explained. The USA edition uses a bigger font or typeface, and has chapter illustrations. That may not seem like much, but in a large work like DH, it can add up fast. I work in print media, and deal with this every day...;-) Second, when looking at the UK "children's" cover, I first thought it was Ron holding the sword. But, look closer - Ron's "hand" and arm would have to be *very* long and is the wrong color compared to his face and other hand. As for the Great Locket Debate, I don't know :-)

Posted by MissingHorcrux Mar 28th 2007

Excellent! I was expecting a tinge of red on the final book's cover - I guessed right! I also appreciate the little hint to the beginning DH plot on the UK kid's cover. Thank you!

Posted by britishwannabe Mar 28th 2007

don't really like the uk cover but where exactly are they? Gringots possibly? I could barely talk or i think i would have started to cry. This is the end guys. I cant believe it and it just isn't computing into my head.

Posted by donnaryley Mar 28th 2007

As for the differences between the “children’s” and “adult” UK books, it’s is just the cover art. Seems there were too many “grownups” embarrassed to read something with a “juvenile” cover on the Tube. ;-)

Posted by JKrowlingismyIDLE Mar 28th 2007

i am not se if i like it

Posted by christianaeg Mar 28th 2007

britishwannabe: me too!! I found out (illegally) in school and i was really upset all afternoon! People were looking at me oddly because i wasn't really paying attetion in class, zoning out a lot. LOL Side affects of big news and the end!!

Posted by sary Mar 28th 2007

Truthfully.. I'm not a fan of any of the covers..

Posted by Quantummilkshake Mar 28th 2007

It's in red and gold... so could it be GODRICS HOLLOW they're at? They have Gryffindor's sword as well... So maybe it's Godric Gryffindor's treasure. Maybe they're seeking a horcrux from Gryffindor?

Posted by xdeanna Mar 28th 2007

This is going to be completely AMAZING!!! Great job, Mary Grandpre! On the children's UK version: I wonder what that bubble thing is on the flap and where the trio are supposed to be on the cover. On the US version: It looks as if they are in the ampitheater in the department of mysteries. I think that Harry and Voldemort may be standing in front of the veil. And do you think that those shadows behind them may be people?

Posted by sweetdreamer0285 Mar 28th 2007

*FREAKING OUT* YEAH!!!!! I can't wait!!!! I believe (compared to the other book cover colors)the orange/golden colors represent a new hope for the future. Or is it missleading...?

Posted by DanielRadcliffeIsSEXY Mar 28th 2007

best book cover ever

Posted by Mirdala Mar 28th 2007

I think the Deathly Hallows is what is behind the veil in the Department of Mysteries. And I also think this is where Harry and Voldemort are, on the cover of the U.S. edition of the cover. I think that is why there are figures in the background, because those are people who have been sent through the viel. How awsome would it be Sirius was there by his side while he defeated Voldemort.

Posted by Lucia_Swanne Mar 28th 2007

OMG so excited!! I think the US cover is a little boring but it's not all that bad...the thing around Harry's neck must be the locket, and Voldy looks really creepy! Slightly confused by the orange colour, it just doesn't seem to fit with the feel of the book...Wonder what they're reaching for, maybe a wand or something?? And then the UK kiddy version: it seems a little to colourful and cartoonish...I understand it's hte childrens cover but still, I think it sohuld have been a little more subdued...I an questioning the idea of the trio being in Gringotts...it seems a bit weird for them to go there of all places...the castle on the back cover looks like it's made of ice lol...no idea about the snake in the orb thing...I think the stag is obviously Harry's patronus...And finally, could the random robes and that hte trio are wearing be from Bill and Fleurs wedding? I have no idea why, but it's just an idea. Adult UK cover: very interesting...I love Slytherin's locket!! Not much to talk about though... All in all I think they released these at the perfect time...it's going to get fans excited all over again...:D:D:D very happy!!

Posted by lisa Mar 28th 2007

from the bottom of the first page.. dominogameboy... i'm sure a lot of people also noticed what he did, but if the veil from the archway is gone (IF thats the right archway) then maybe... just MAYBE... sirius returns? :D that's my dream come true. anyway.. GREAT BOOK COVER, the UK children's edition is um a bit odd, but the treasure sure gives away a lot more than the US edition. anyway SO excited!! :) ... btw, did anyone see the full (front and back) book cover on the today show?? a close friend of mine told me she saw it, and voldemort was on the back

Posted by cocoa_nut Mar 28th 2007

WAHOO! It wasn't at all what I was expecting, but it's definitely growing on me. (Very similar to the title. When I first heard Deathly Hallows I wasn't sure how I felt about it...) The UK version definitely shows more clues but we know that the US version shows something significant. I'm just so excited! I can't wait!!

Posted by imapirateargg Mar 28th 2007

OMG I can't belive it, it's so great I love it so much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!! *screm*

Posted by Prongs31 Mar 28th 2007

Uhhh is it just me or does it look like harry and voldemort are.....working together????!??!?!?!!?!!! ??

Posted by oakshaft79pn Mar 28th 2007

iI LOVE THE UK COVERS, IAM SO GLAD I GET THOSE ONES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by MuggleMage Mar 28th 2007

*curled up in ball* Oh my goodness... I love how the cover looks but it really is almost over...They should call this Harry Potter withdrawal.

Posted by Crystal Mar 28th 2007

Sad, I found this out while researching for something in Religion (Ha! Note the irony!), Oh my, I am so excited! I didn't hear this in the morning news, I didn't even hear them report it! Either that or I missed that part of the news (I missed the first 20 mins of the news). Wow, I can't believe it, the cover released! First the release date then the cover! Wow, reality is hitting me, Harry Potter WILL end! This is sad and exciting at the same time, I can't wait!

Posted by darkhairhermy Mar 28th 2007

Okay I gave up on the fourth page :) Has anyone else noticed that on the UK full cover on the top of the middle-thing (blanking on the termonology right now...) there's a triangle split by a line that also runs through a circle? Does that have anything to do with mythology or anything?

Posted by Flor Mar 28th 2007

I've just noticed.. Harry is hurt on his left arm, he has a cut and the sleeve looks like it's burnt or is that just the design??? Oh by the way I just love Hermione's cloak, very pretty

Posted by donnaryley Mar 28th 2007

Ok, now for the cover art. I’m looking at the hi-res image of the US cover. If you look at Harry’s left hand, it appears he is reaching for something, a cloud that is forming *just* behind the curtain. It’s whiter and brighter that the surrounding lighter swirls. More tellingly, Harry’s left thumb, index finger and web of hand between the two are illuminated by whatever is coming from behind the curtain. Harry is looking hopeful, perhaps happy at whatever is coming. To me Voldy looks afraid, but it trying to grab whatever’s coming. He’s not giving up. Now what could be coming? Hmm… Now I turn to the UK covers, and Lo! I see a silver stag, Harry’s Patronus. Now why would a cover designer waste time and ink on that? Could it be that the Patronus, an embodiment of Harry’s dad is coming? Much has been made of Lilly’s sacrifice to protect Harry, but James also stood his ground, perhaps to try to give Lilly time to get Harry away. That makes powerful magic, indeed. Just a thought…

Posted by ConCon Mar 28th 2007

haha. in the US version, harry's kinda hot. in the UK version, he kinda looks like Napoleon Dynomite... haha

Posted by Harryfan20 Mar 28th 2007

HOORAY! Aw, but the last one. It doesn't look horrible, but an orange cover? Hmm. Not expecting that one. Still, looks great!

Posted by Dumbledorelives Mar 28th 2007

For the UK children's cover, is it possible the trio are inside Gringotts, searching for a horcrux? If so, the creature on Harry's back could be a Goblin instead of an elf, and it would explain the treasure. Also, on the US cover, what is the small bag tied around Harry's neck? Could it contain a Horcrux? Or perhaps he keeps the note from R.A.B inside it.

Posted by Mnemone07 Mar 28th 2007

I don't have the time to read all of the almost 900 comments right now, so probably someone else already noticed this, but- that's not Ron holding Gryffindor's sword: that's Kreacher. Or at least, it's a house elf, but I highly doubt that it's Winky or Dobby. And it would make sense, seeing as I think Kreacher could provide Harry with loads of help and advice (albeit probably unwillingly).

Posted by DanielRadcliffeIsSEXY Mar 28th 2007

US Harry is sexy....like Daniel Radcliffe.....DanielRadcl iffeIsSEXY.....That's my name.....Mary Grandpre outdid herself. The US Cover is amazing and surprisingly emotional......*cries and hugs Gund Harry Potter Doll*

Posted by bspice Mar 28th 2007

Did anyone else notice Harrys scar is gone? Maybe it is a horcrux. Maybe the Mary just left it off. Who knows? I can't wait though.

Posted by americanidoluver Mar 28th 2007

OMG OMG OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i can not believe this.....they also put the the storyline!!!!!!! but it doesnt realy giv away much other than the OOTP will come to privet drive.......did u notice in the cover where the trio are surrounded by jewels that dobby is in the back of harry, one of his hand's is on harry's shoulder and he is thrusting up GOdric Gryffindor's sword? maybe that signifies that it is a horcrux........... also, on the adult UK edition, when it comes to slytherin's locket, i have a feeling that the locket is going to be the last and most important horcrux harry wil hav to find cuz sum1 else already has it....anyways the most important thing i thought was dobby in the back of harry...interesting!!!
