'Deathly Hallows' cover art released!
Scholastic and Bloomsbury today both revealed the covers for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows!

- United States Children's Edition - view here
- United Kingdom Children's Edition - view here
- United Kingdom Adult Edition - view here

You can also view a high-res version of the entire US jacket HERE.

Bloomsbury also announced today that the UK edition will be 608 pages long. As previously announced, the US version of the book will have 784 pages, making it longer than GOF. However, the UK page count makes DH shorter than the British GOF (which is 636 pages long). We presume this is due to an increased font size for the US version.

UPDATE: Arthur Levine, the US Potter editor, spoke this morning on the TODAY show about the American cover:

"We're seeing Harry in a very interesting situation. Readers will find out exactly what the situation is.

"When I was reading it, I had both the excitement and the power of the book, and the plot, driving me forward. But I was also feeling a little sad. It's the last time."

When Levine admitted he "sobbed and sobbed" while reading Deathly Hallows, he was asked the following:

"That means someone we like dies, doesn't it?"

"Well, it means it is a very, very emotional book," he responded.

Only 608 pages! WAYYY to short! Oh well.

Posted by EvaGo Mar 29th 2007

@freaking heights: you're right it really looks more like a leather pouch than the locket we see on the uk adult cover. but this can also be refered to the artists freedom (i'm sorry i sometimes cant express myself how I want in english - im german) and on the us cover it is drawed so darkly, that it could be anything. and if its really a leather pouch, it could contain a horcrux of voldemort, too. perhaps harry uses it as his protection against voldy, because voldy wouldn't damage his own horcruxes. perhaps its the last one left and perhaps voldy would die directly when it is destroyed, because his own soul in his body has already been destroyed when the avada kedavra fell back when harry was a baby. okay this is a lot of speculation here...

Posted by Hermy_Own6 Mar 29th 2007

The UK kids version is so gaudy. I want the UK adult version. Its the best looking so far. I never really liked the US version.

Oh my gosh!!! Those are sooooooooo cool? Where is Harry in the US cover? It looks like he's summoning those people in the background. Sweet. I can't wait until it comes out.

Posted by hpintwense06 Mar 29th 2007

EvaGo - I like your idea on how Harry could have one of Voldemort's horcruxes in the pouch (if it is in fact a pouch). It would be a smart thing for Harry to do.... kind of like in book 5 when no one could attack Harry because he was holding the prophecy. That's a cool theory.

Posted by Peevsie Mar 29th 2007

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH HH! Oh MY LORD< I AM SO EXCITED!!!! What do you think Harry has around his neck? A horcrux, maybe? It has to be the locket, but is it the REAL one? The picture has kind of odd colors. I like it, though. It is too sad to think that we will never see another new cover now.

Posted by KalKat Mar 29th 2007

who thinks they are in the room with the veil? ooooo-i do! i do!

Posted by weather Mar 29th 2007

I KNOW WHAT THE US COVER IS! they (harry and voldemort) are in the department of mysteries yet again. Their in the cathedral right alongside the curtain that Sirus fell through. The curtains could be symbolic in that they show how close voldemort is to death once harry gets all his horcrux's or they could actually be fighting in the death room at the department of mysteries. The murky figures in the background would then be all the dead watching the battle unfold. Maybe Sirus, Dumbeldore, Harry's parents, Bertha Jorkins... can help yet again. Jk did say that sirus and dumbeldore were truley dead but not gone. it all makes sense!!!!!!!

Posted by DanielRadcliffeIsSEXY Mar 29th 2007

weather...hey, nice prediction. If it is true.....Harry can see his parents...if they are ghosts....HARRY WILL HAVE HIS ERISED DESIRE COME TRUE!!!

Posted by TracyRogers Mar 29th 2007

Are they being thrown OUT of that stone arch on the UK cover, or are they being SUCKED IN to it...?

Posted by 6slytherinangel6 Mar 29th 2007

I think this is going to be the best book of the whole series....I can't wait to read it and I will probably cry because it's the end of the harry potter series.

WOO HOO!!! squeeee

Posted by wanderlust Mar 29th 2007

I am in awe of the amount of post on this thread!!! It's awesome!! I just want to say that I think they are all great. I'm in the US and I like the fact that it's different color just like the rest of the books were. I, like some of you think that Harry and Voldy are probably reaching for something, maybe a horcruxe or wands or even the phoenix?!? The covers do tell us alot of different things.. Can't wait!!!!!!!!!

Posted by hpintwense06 Mar 29th 2007

i think that the curtains are just there because like in the US book one cover, there is a curtain, which i believe means like the "opening" cuz it is the first book, and the curtains on the US cover of book 7 mean the "closing." you know, like a play begins with the curtains opening and ends with them closing??? i think that is all they mean. i don't think they could be representing the veil because it is never mentioned in book one. i hope that makes sense!

Posted by DanielRadcliffeIsSEXY Mar 29th 2007

A prediction from Digg that actually would make sense: Harry is shown throwing the Horcruxes through the curtain, which we (the viewers) are looking out the bottom of. (It's easier than destroying them each individually.) Voldemort is reaching to stop him. Harry's "missing" scar is simply hidden by his hair in the way this is painted. The end game will be Harry vs. Voldemort, and after Voldemort kills a couple people, someone important will sacrifice themselves to take Voldemort through the curtain with them--again, easier than winning a direct wizard duel. We the readers will go with them and in doing so see the process by which a person becomes a ghost. My money's on Harry for the sacrifice and ghost. That way it's a tragic ending but Harry remains a character through to the last page (and forever presumably). It allows him to say goodbye, while at the same time firmly closing the door on the series, which Rowling has always been very firm about. RAB is Regulus Black but it's not that important--he just happened to get one of the Horcruxes out of the cave because the key to get past the Horcrux defenses is the Dark Mark. He was killed unceremoniously after re-hiding the Horcrux among his family's possessions, where Harry will find it despite Kreacher's treachery. Snape uses his Dark Mark to help retrieve another Horcrux or two from behind their defenses. But as always he acts alone and secretly, and Harry does not know and/or believe Snape helped him at all. Snape survives but in the end is trusted by no one--an outcast.

Posted by TracyRogers Mar 29th 2007

Could the UK back cover show a war between DEMENTORS and PATRONUSES?

Posted by TracyRogers Mar 29th 2007

Knockturn Alley = Nocturnally Grimmauld Place = Grim Old Place AND Severus Snape = Sever a Snake SO, somehow Snape is good and will help kill Voldemort in the end.

Posted by DanielRadcliffeIsSEXY Mar 29th 2007

Caption for the US cover: Harry: "It's the final Horcrux!" *catches and destroys last Horcrux* Voldemort: 'NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! !" *Voldemort dies* Harry: Oh my god, my scar....it's GONE!"

Posted by Bishopk Mar 29th 2007

I can only assume that the locket on the cover of the UK adult edition is Slytherin's locket :)

Posted by bumbledore Mar 29th 2007

I'm afraid I havn't read most of the posts here, so this may be redundant--I can't accept that Mary Grandpre didn't INTENTIONALLY not show Harry's scar. It has been very obvious in almost every other illustration she has done. I think this supports the theory that Harry is an accidental horcrux, and that by this scene, the portion of V's soul that was in him has been removed (I have no idea how!) and therefore the scar has disappeared. Also, neither has a wand. How many times in the previous books has Harry been advised to learn wandless magic?

Posted by BetZZZlovesHarry Mar 29th 2007

i think harry's scar will disappear after he defeats Voldemort because all of his powers from Voldemort were form the scar and if Voldy isnt there than his scar will disappear...that is unless harry is a horcrux and has to kill himself to get rid of Voldy in the first place...i posted this idea a lot earlier so dont think im copying anyones ideas!! lol

Posted by iluvsoccer_717 Mar 29th 2007

i dont really care wat the cover looks like!!! i just wanna get my hands on the book!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh hh!!!!! i cant wait 113 dayz, i need 2 read it now!!!!! i hope its the best book yet..... :) =D

Posted by DarthMuffin Mar 29th 2007

I think the UK Child edition looks terribly strange (not in a good way). The adult edition is similar to the previous ones, and I love it.

Posted by rcow Mar 29th 2007

Does anyone else think it's interesting that it looks like Harry's got some white or gray hairs growing in up top? Too much stress!

Posted by hpgirl_91 Mar 29th 2007

i don't know but did anyone else think that it would be a lot darker? I was definitely expecting dark blue/purple/green etc. This seems really bright for such a dark book.

Posted by brunetteginny Mar 29th 2007

one step closer to the actual release! YAY! i thought it would be black though. it seems too happy almost. even though a great voldemort is on the back but still. anyway, i'm still happy

Posted by sintered_mud Mar 29th 2007

I love the new covers! They're exciting! But I must say that the creature holding onto Harry on the UK version is definitely a goblin from Gringotts. The goblins probably joined Voldemort and the goblins are protecting some of the horcruxes. So... maybe the scene is from Harry, Ron and Hermione going to steal them and destroy them. YAY!

Posted by bookworm1991 Mar 29th 2007

I was on Amazon looking something up and i clicked on HP 7 because it seems to have a picture. I was like "Surely that is a random picture that they have put up in place of a cover since that isn't out yet." I looked closely and decided it was too close to the right style to be a made up pic. So I beetled over to MuggleNet and was like "AAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH HHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's HERE. I have GOT to tell my sister!!!!!!!!!!"

Posted by Eleanor_Prewett Mar 29th 2007

Three thoughts: 1- Is that a house elf holding on to Harry in the UK version? Whatever it is, it is also holding the short sword there. That's not Ron's hand. 2- Why in the UK version does the Trio seem to be pretty banged up (notice the blood) but Harry looks unblemished in the US version. 3- At the far left, bottom corner of the UK version, in the circle, are those the two snakes entwined Harry saw from Dumbledore's instrument directly after Nagini attacked Mr. Weasley in OotP?

Posted by kdog Mar 29th 2007

Thats problably her worst cover yet....

Posted by bookworm1991 Mar 29th 2007

What don't you like about it?

Posted by LooneyLunaLove Mar 29th 2007

I am sooooooooooo anxious for the book now! MUST HAVE BOOK!!!! The UK cover looks like something my nine year old drew the other day. The US cover really was not what I expected but, in a good way. The bright colors give me hope that Harry will live! Now I have done some research on the symbol on the UK cover's spine because I was curious as to what it was and why its there, I had that research each symbol individually because I could not find the whole symbol. The vertical line represents man, it symbolizes the path from earth to heaven and the REALM OF SPIRIT. The circle is a symbol of completeness, eternity, and the SOUL. And the upward triangle is a symbol of rising up or aspiration, male force, and fire. My guess is that Harry (triangle) will go thru the veil (Vertical line) and return with his soul intact (circle). Here's the link to the wesite the info came from http://altreligion.about. com/library/weekly/aa0620 03a.htm I'm looking forward to everyone's theories.

Posted by danfan_1 Mar 29th 2007

omigoodness. the covers are already released!!! I'm so exited!!!! millions of theories are forming in my mind...

Posted by jens Mar 29th 2007

oooh I love the covers! I think yellow is a good choice. It'll go nicely with the other 6

Posted by Kale57 Mar 29th 2007

Alright, I've been looking at these for a while now and I think that, like most people have concluded, in the US cover Harry and Voldemort must be behind the veil at the Ministry in this scene, and the shadows in the background are all the dead people. I don't think that the shadows are the hallows though, and I'll tell you why. A hallow (when used as a noun) means an important or powerful object, like a horcrux. Furthermore, in gaelic mythology the four hallows of ireland are the stone of destiny (slyterine's locket), the spear of destiny (maybe something of ravenclaw's), the sword of Nuada (gryfindor's sword) and Dagda's Cauldron (Hufflepuff's cup). Rowling borrows pretty liberally from Gaelic mythology throughout the series (Wormtail's hand being a great example) and I think it more likely that the 'hallows' referred to in the title are the horcruxes Harry has to collect and destroy. Also, I don't know if nobody else has noticed it or if I've just not read it, but if you look at the US cover you can see that Harry and Voldemort are not looking in the same place. While Harry is looking up past his hand, Voldemort is looking at Harry, and his hand is dropped (hence, not pointing in the same direction). Finally, in the US cover I don't think that's Dobby holding the sword, because Dobby is always wearing a hat when described in all the books after the Chamber of Secrets. It could be Kreacher, it could be Winky, it could be a goblin, but it's probably not Dobby.

Posted by snapesmyguy Mar 29th 2007

Has anyone noticed yet that there is a shadowy silhouette on the back of the US version where the light is spilling out out of Hogwarts? Look closely and you'll see it because the light should be a solid line, but it's not........

Posted by snapesmyguy Mar 29th 2007

Oops! Sorry, meant UK children's version............

Posted by sanyas Mar 29th 2007

The UK cover is terrible! It looks like a Mad magazine spoof! The back cover looks interesting though. But I find the main drawing interesting nevertheless. What is this mysterious room full of treasure? What is that portal at the back? Are the falling forwards through it or falling backwards? What is up with Hermione's hairdo? These and other questions I shall eagerly await the answers to. On the contrary, the US cover is awesome. It doesn't give much away, looks very cool and mysterious, and features the best drawing of Harry Potter yet. I must admit, however, that I did expect it to be darker in tone...

Posted by KidRowling Mar 29th 2007

I was hoping that the US cover would be black. It would have looked phenomenal with a black background, Harry Potter written in silver, and Deathly Hallows in grey with Harry's silouette underneath. Oh well, this cover looks awesome!

Posted by loveylunegood Mar 29th 2007

While I agree the artistic value of the UK children's version leaves much to be desired, it does give you alot to think about. I don't think the creature behind Harry is a house elf. The ears look almost identical to the ones of the goblins in the SS film. It would make sense if they are in a vault at Gringot's. Houseelves ears tend to go out to the side more. (See the illustration from chapter 2 of CS) It is possible that now that Harry is of age ( or will be toward the beginning of the book) that he might have access to further funds from his parent's or Sirius then those of which he has been currently aware. Perhaps something that could help with the horcrux hunt. One question I do have, if anyone has the answer to it, is what is the substantial difference between the children's edition and the adult one? Also, can you order the uk edition from the us (just for posterities sake)?

Posted by Furbz Mar 30th 2007

What if the horcruxes that keep Voldy bound to the earth can be thrown through the veil and bind him to the "afterlife" beyond the veil. It would certainly explain why the cover has Harry looking like he flicked a horcrux or two through the veil and Voldy is like reaching for them as they're flying through, like "NO!!!". Harry then keeps the last horcrux on himself to prevent Voldy from attacking him while he does this. Maybe uses it to sort of force Voldy to to "lay down his wand". Something along those lines.

Posted by loveylunegood Mar 30th 2007

Okay, so I don't know how to spell (posterity's). I also reexamined the uk book cover and the creature's ears do go out to the side some, however, I still think they look more like goblin ears.
