'Deathly Hallows' cover art released!
Scholastic and Bloomsbury today both revealed the covers for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows!

- United States Children's Edition - view here
- United Kingdom Children's Edition - view here
- United Kingdom Adult Edition - view here

You can also view a high-res version of the entire US jacket HERE.

Bloomsbury also announced today that the UK edition will be 608 pages long. As previously announced, the US version of the book will have 784 pages, making it longer than GOF. However, the UK page count makes DH shorter than the British GOF (which is 636 pages long). We presume this is due to an increased font size for the US version.

UPDATE: Arthur Levine, the US Potter editor, spoke this morning on the TODAY show about the American cover:

"We're seeing Harry in a very interesting situation. Readers will find out exactly what the situation is.

"When I was reading it, I had both the excitement and the power of the book, and the plot, driving me forward. But I was also feeling a little sad. It's the last time."

When Levine admitted he "sobbed and sobbed" while reading Deathly Hallows, he was asked the following:

"That means someone we like dies, doesn't it?"

"Well, it means it is a very, very emotional book," he responded.

Higgins--- That black rat is the Bloomsberry insignia. lol...nice try tho

Posted by higgins Mar 31st 2007

Does the US Kids edition show the room with the arch and the veil? Then the Deathly Hallows could be the dead people on the other side of the veil, including Sirius. BUT in OOP the room is described as rectangular with stone benches running all around the room and descending in steep steps like an amphitheatre. There is a raised stone dais in the centre with a pointed stone archway. The archway is hung with a tattered black curtain or veil. I'm not sure. The space behind Harry doesn't look rectangular. It doesn't even look like a room. There also seems to be a broken wooden post in the foreground. That definitely isn't mentioned in OOP. So I'm guessing it is somewhere else. Apparently, two titles: "Harry Potter and the Hallows of Hogwarts" and "Harry Potter and the Hogwarts Hallows" were copyrighted two years ago. So perhaps it is somewhere near Hogwarts?

Posted by HI_PEOPLE Mar 31st 2007

OH yeah now all we need is the name of the chapters and our imagination's will go crazy!

Posted by Mnemone07 Mar 31st 2007

Hogwarts Hallows...Hallows of Hogwarts- it's the graveyard! Alfonso Cuaron had asked Jo if he could set Buckbeak's "execution" there in the POA movie, but she said no, that it would come up in a future book! And it would make sense that Godric Gryffindor's armor was there- at least I think it's his armor- seeing as the founders are probably buried there. But why would there be arches and curtains in the school cemetary? Maybe the graveyard at Godric's Hollow...nah, Hollow and Hallows are different, and Hallows of Hogwarts wouldn't have been copyrighted if it wasn't at Hogwarts, obviously...hmmm...this is interesting...what do you guys think?

Posted by Mnemone07 Mar 31st 2007

Also...this confirms that "Hallows" are sacred grounds, though I think the Dutch translation of the title meant "Deathly Saints" or something to that effect...well, I'm even more convinced that the figures in the background are the spirits of the people Voldy killed, like in the Priori Incantatem effect. I whole-heartedly agree with higgins- they are definitely not behind the veil. But as to why a graveyard would be designed like that...I guess we'll have to wait until July to find out why, or at least if we're right. Sorry I keep on commenting- I have too much to say, and all my friends that care about HP are on vacation, so I don't have a chance to discuss this offline.

Who? Death's Ally.....is Voldemort going to die? Is he Death's Ally?

Posted by Zekiu Mar 31st 2007

Hmm...it's not really what I expected, but I love it! I was thinking lots of black with some red and orange, probably because a lot of stuff happens on Halloween in the series.

Posted by DanielRadcliffeIsSEXY Mar 31st 2007

The british cover is hopefully an early April Fools joke, seeing as tomorrow is the day Fred and George like best!

Posted by SiriusFool Mar 31st 2007

Why the kids UK version could be Gringotts: Look closely at the armor that's around the trio. The dragon perched on top of the helmet could be a big clue. It also looks like they have no regard for the treasure all around them.

Posted by RavenclawKid888 Mar 31st 2007

Mnemone07- I love your comments. You really put some thought into this, havent you? My first reaction to seeing the US cover was that they were behind the veil. I dont know where else they could be. For the UK Kids cover, my first thought was they were at Gringotts, trying to steal a horcrux hidden deep within Gringotts. JKR is soo sneaky! Shes told us about Gringotts and how hard it is to steal something from there since the 6th chapter of SS! But then, I thought maybe they were at the Malfoy residence, and it would be Dobby on his back. Dobby would know that house like the back of his hand, since he did work for them. I think the trio and Dobby are looking for a horcrux in the Malfoy mansion. Another thing: why does everyone seem to bring up the dragon on the armor? I really dont think its that big adeal...just some decoration. PS. What I find funny is that JKR has had me guessing since Book 1...and Ive been wrong everysingletime. I still havent learn my lesson about trying to figure out JKR.

ive read a lot of theories especially about why harry's scar isn't gone...and ive decided that this is the best one..and would also be really cool -->everytime harry destroys a horcrux, his scar fades. therefore by the time hes fighting voldemort, the scar is very faint, and no longer bright red as it was on the rest of the covers...and i think that when he finally defeats voldemort, the scar will disappear

Posted by DanielRadcliffeIsSEXY Mar 31st 2007

mOpNgLo853: Thanks for talking about my theory.....I really like my idea.....Harry doesn't have a scar....he's still to young to drive a car.....

Posted by loopy4lupin Mar 31st 2007

That is definitely my favorite cover.

Posted by heathwyn Mar 31st 2007

On the UK Children's cover Harry and Hermione have cuts on their arms. Wonder why? (Sorry if this was already posted)

Posted by best_fan_ever Mar 31st 2007

Wooooooooow!!!!!!! Amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!! me encanta!!!!!!!!! I really love it!!! The US COVER (As usual) is wonderful, is my favourite. in the uk children's cover Harry seems Crabbe, doesn't he!! hehe! I didn't like the uk cover. It's as boring as usual. the US's is amazingly beautiful. Harry's a little bit nicer, isn't he? Yeaaaaaaaahhhhhh, he is!!!! Goblet of Fire, Order of the Phoenix, and Deathly Hallows are my favourite covers!!

Posted by jman504 Mar 31st 2007

does anyone notice that in the british version that a house elf is holding a sword (possibly godric gryffindor...)

Posted by brantonli Apr 1st 2007

I can say that the UK children's version looks digustingly horrible. Like something out of A series of Unfortunate Events.

Posted by DanielRadcliffeIsSEXY Apr 1st 2007

US cover beats out HBP for my favorite cover...harry is HOT on the US DH cover!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by ArtemisBlack Apr 1st 2007

Many of you had commented that the battle was most likely to occur in the coliseum than the in the department of mysteries as the description given in OOTP did not match the drawing (US version of DH). Well, I looked up the definition of amphitheater....literally it means: The name amphitheatre (alternatively amphitheater) refers to a level, open space surrounded by an oval area that gradually ascends. The area may be a man-made structure or a natural geographic formation, but it is suited for seating people on the sloping area for the viewing of spectator sports, games, concerts, displays, rallies, or theatrical performances. One of many notable amphitheaters are the coliseum. From this I think we can safely draw the conclusion that the battle will indeed occur in the department of mysteries and not the coliseum.

Posted by inferi_infera Apr 1st 2007

They are definetaly in the department of mysteries. that looks like the veil although i dont know why it would be put to the side but i can't wait to read this book

Posted by dkizzy1 Apr 1st 2007

did anyone notice that on the back of the children's birtish edition, it looks more like baubataons [think i spelled that right- maybe an x] than Hogwarts, just throwing that out there.

Posted by asleep_at_the_moment Apr 1st 2007

i am also of the belief that that is not hogwarts on the back. since when did hogwarts turrets look like that? im inclined to say durmstrang though as we will see krum in DH

Posted by bwillmore Apr 1st 2007

harry is cut and bleeding, Kreecher is trying to attack him with the sword, and trying to get them out of the vault

Posted by pixeegirl Apr 1st 2007

yeah, that has to be a house elf. you can see the hand on harry's shoulder. It's not Ron holding the sword, but a house elf. *revalation dawning on me now****

Posted by lilkid13 Apr 1st 2007

i have to agree that thats Beauxbatons and not Hogwarts has anyone noticed that theres sort of like a dog on the british cover right on top of where it says Bloomsbury? its sort to the right where the barcode numbers are

(Sunday April, 1 00:10 am) Hi J.K. Rowling and everybody else, If you don't want to know the end of the story, don't read this. My friend and I have been analysing the different covers and this is the conclusion we came up with. First of all, the UK adult cover doesn't unveil anything... However, in 'unveil', there is 'veil', and if you look at the UK children version, you can see the arch in the background, but without the veil. So we looked for it on the US cover and there it is, on the either side of the cover, revealing the destroyed arch whose wooden bits and stone fragments you can see in the foreground. What confirms it is that the setting described in book 5 around the arch is that of an amphitheatre, whereas on the US cover, you can see an arena, both architectures being similar. No doubt, both Harry and Voldemort are near the veil. But the difference is that Voldemort is beyond the veil because he doesn't fear to die as he's immortal thanks to the Horcruxes left. On the other hand, Harry is standing before the veil on the illustration (the wooden bits are behind Harry). But soon... Harry will step beyond the veil too in order to destroy the four Horcruxes left, namely: Voldemort himself, Harry himself; the Slytherin locket worn around Harry's neck, and the very last one that both Harry and Voldemort are looking at on the cover. But there's a huge difference between them: Harry's trying to catch the object (his hand-palm is turned face up) whereas Voldemort is trying to push it away so the ultimate Horcruxe doesn't come through the veil, leading to his final destruction. So in a sense, Harry is sacrificing himself to kill You-Know-Who. This scene is the very last one of the 7th book (both Harry and Voldemort dying), which confirms JK Rowling's interview where she says two characters die in the last chapter. You think we've spoiled everything? Not yet... The shadowy people who are in the background are none but the Deathly Hallows that Luna heard whisper...

Posted by 53249314 Apr 1st 2007

(continuation of the previous message) whispering beyond the veil in book 5. Oops, have we said too much? Good day, The Spoiling Hallows PS: you'd better hurry to guess things because we'll be back to ruin your theories again... Love xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx.

Posted by kooldude10694 Apr 1st 2007

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOO! I know it's late, but I'm gonna celebrate! Hey, that rhymes, how many times...LOL. The least exciting of these covers is the UK Adult one! The UK childrens' one is the most "controversial" but I think the US is the best. ITS SO COOL!

Posted by Jobob Apr 1st 2007

On the UK childrens edition, it looks like they are either falling or out of the veiled archway. It has the same kind of stonework that is discribed in the book. I can't wait to read it and find out.

Posted by tula_21 Apr 1st 2007

I was listening to Mugglecast and was studying the covers, the snake in the Orb is ONE snake not two.

Posted by shiva_nf Apr 1st 2007

Did anyone notice, Harry has a locket/necklace kinda stuff around his neck?

Posted by Valix Apr 2nd 2007

Is it just me or is harry's right hand..blackened?

Posted by MollyWiltersen Apr 2nd 2007

Hannah-at-Hogwarts: good to see you're still with us! I agree with you that the fact that the editor sobbed his way through DH is not a good sign but I don't want to think too much about that yet. Wonder if I'll be able to read the book without reading the last page first.....

Posted by scon91 Apr 2nd 2007

on the UK one isnt that Dobby on Harrys back holding Gryfindors sword??

Posted by richlamb2222 Apr 2nd 2007

weres the scar at?

Posted by ALEXIS20 Apr 2nd 2007

I just realised............ On the U.S cover it looks like both Harry and Voldemort are reaching out for something above them, although Voldemort has his eyes fixed on Harry. Voldemort's hand is positioned upwards rather than directly towards Harry.

Posted by DanielRadcliffeIsSEXY Apr 2nd 2007

NEW ANAGRAM: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows becomes: At the end, Harry traps death. Holy Owl!

Posted by pixeegirl Apr 2nd 2007

Did anyone happen to notice the armor in the UK children's cover? There is chest armor with a snake on it and a helmet with a dragon on it. Please, has anyone else noticed it?

Posted by weasley_is_rad Apr 2nd 2007

Yeah, I think that is dobby in the UK/Aussie one (Australia usually gets the same as the UK, coz Aussie rocks!) holding godric griffindor's sword I'm thinking...hmmmm....I'm thinking that I thought that the seventh cover would of used darker colours, because of how emtional and intense the seventh book is supposed to be. Or that could just be me...I'm not the genius writting these books J.K.R. is, and she knows what she's doing, shes a smart woman, so i'm trusting that it'll be an incredible experience reading this final book as the last six books have been, although it'll be sad to see the Potter series end. Its so hard to believe that its finally ending...The Harry Potter Series is ENDING! wah! any way, I think its safe to thank J.K. Rowling for giving us the ride of a life time because the series has meant ALOT to everyone, I always felt more comfortable reading any of the Harry books when some really bad stuff was happening. I just wanted to go away sometimes and somehow after I'd read, like, a chapter of, say: 'the half blood prince' I'd always feel like I could work it all out. And that everything was gonna be OK, for some its just a hobby reading this series, for me this is a beacon of hope for any one that needs that little bit of comfort... -Desany >political Punks rock!< \m/(>_

Posted by Mnemone07 Apr 2nd 2007

RavenclawKid888: Thank you!!! It's nice to know that my theories aren't entirely worthless. I am less dismissive now than I was before about Gringotts; now that I think about it, it would be something Jo would do, to reintroduce it after a lapse of several books. She's done it before, but I still don't know what to think, except that we're not behind the veil. I still am adamant about that...but then again, I'll probably be proved completely wrong.

Posted by Potterfreak999 Apr 2nd 2007

Awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by Hermionerox1 Apr 2nd 2007

Yay!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm so happy :] I can hardly contain my excitment! I am soooo anxious to finally find out the answers to ALL of my questions (FINALLY!) And the covers look awesome! Although at this point I could really careless what the cover looks like, I just want to GET MY HANDS ON THAT BOOK! lol. I am very sad that it will all be over though...*sniffle* :'( it will definately be a sad day.

Posted by charma_10 Apr 3rd 2007

On the UK children's edition, can anyone else see the face like thing embossed on the top brick of the archway (It's on the right hand half of the brick)? Cause I swear I can see it....looks like an oldish guy with a really big nose....

Posted by _Ems_ Apr 3rd 2007

Allot of people seem to think the tree on the back of the UK children's addition is the whomping willow, but to me it looks like more then one tree- you can see several trees behind it, giving the perception of depth. There is also a large black cloud which is diffferent from the clouds higher in the sky surrounding the blackened trees - if we assume this is Hogwarts, it would appear to me that the forbidden forest has been set on fire.

Posted by Dumbledores_Lover Apr 3rd 2007

I personally prefer the UK version - the american version amkes the book look like a play (The curtains on either side) and voldemort dosen't look scary. Where as the UK version and the UK Adult version seem more linked to the questions of the book, for example an English tabloid compared the treasure on the front of the UK children's edition of the book to be inked with the mysterious treasure that Harry inherited from James and Lily. The treasure that teh trio seem to be laying could also be linked to the search for the missing 2 horuxes . Likewise the adults version has a picture of what appears to be Slytherin's locket - which is also believed to be a horocux. O well either way we'll have to wait untill July to find out !! x
