Peter Alexander, a former vice president of Universal Studios and founder of a theme park design consultancy, said: "People keep screeching that it's an entirely separate park, but according to Steve Spielberg, who we talked to about it, he says it's going to be a 'land' within the confines of the existing Islands of Adventure theme park. If it's a 'land' it will cost at the very least $500m."
The article goes on to say that Universal and JK Rowling "are agreed on the principle of the mini-park, but are still hammering out the details of a settlement." Once plans are finalized, The Scotsman says the park could be built within 18 months. We'll keep you updated as more details emerge, but keep in mind that nothing has been confirmed yet.

Awesome! That is a great idea. If there was maybe even a Great Hall where people could eat, they could put 4 house tables into it. And maybe they could make a giant wizard's chess board or something. That would be really cool.
Hmmm... that's an interesting idea. I'm not exactly sure how I feel about it... It could go horribly wrong and be very cheesy... or it could be totally amazing, if done right. I agree that the idea of someone wearing a Voldemort mask and getting their picture taken with little kids is extremely creepy. But if they put in a lot of thought and creativity, it could be great. Harry Potter has all kinds of theme park-worthy scenes. P.S. I will still love HP to death, even if it does become too commercial. It started off as a book series, and that is what it will always be to me, even though I also love the movies, fanfics, and merchandise. It'll be interesting to see how this turns out:)
That's so cool! I would go!!! Then there will be even more HP souvenirs. Stuffed animals, tshirts, etc. I wonder what it will be like.
in my opinion i think it is completely unnecessary. I think that is going to far, but it doesnt mean i wont ever visit it
haha that would probably be like a heaven for me even though the idea is sort of weird...i would definitely visit it though
OMG my family owns a condo RIGHT THERE!!!!!! THATS SOOO EXCITING
Agreed vanishingact23 !!
Harry Potter theme park?!!!!! How many times and how loud can you say "Frickin awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
that sounds like so much fun!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
OMG! YAY! Okay I can see how some people wouldn't like it, but I think if they get it right, this would be awesome. We'd be able to see diagon alley, hogsmeade, hogwarts, the ministry, azkaban. What if they had the secert passages and the shrieking shck, and the chamber of secerts? It'd be sooo cool! But I also feel that they shouldn't have rides, instead just let it be a walk through world. You know, just experience the wizarding world. Oh and also they should make one in Califirnia (where I live). I'd still beg my parents to take me to Orlando.
Excellent. I would definately go. Oh, to be able to wander around Hogsmead, The Burrow, Diagon Alley and Hogwarts Castle. Ahhhh, my idea of heaven. but a long way from Australia.
If this were to happen, I believe that the folks in charge of building the sets and designing costumes in the movies should be contracted to help build this park. They already know what to do and how it should look (the movies may not be exactly what many people imagine, but come on, they're pretty darn close as a whole), and the whole setting and mood. *~>THEN... those who are hired as wizards and such, should be required to not only read all 7 books, but be quizzed on the fundamentals of the books, plots, subplots, and certain details. It may be a bit to go through just for a job, but those in charge of this venture (if it is more than a rumor) really do need to take into account the closeness in which most of us fans hold these books to heart and if they want our business, they gotta really make it feel real. Anything that even remotely reeks of 'cheez', will destroy the experience. I, for one, would love to visit the 'wizarding world' via a themepark, if it is pulled off as real, and detailed as possible-like stepping into the pages of the books. I think it would be kind of fun to have my favorite series literally come to life, even if the actual magic isn't real. Oh, and one other thing... if Steven Spielberg touches this, it will be totally destroyed. He is a good director overall, but he now is too obsessed with good visual effects and tends to sacrifice the true details and plot that make the experience all the better. He should be kept far away from any kind of project like this. Get one of the most recent directors (or all of them) to collaborate and give input since they devoted 12-18 months (or more) of their lives bringing HP to life on screen. It isn't much of a stretch to do it live.
It's true... universal DOES have the bid to build the park. Not Disney's WDI... which they would have done a better job. Thats all I am saying. :)
OMG! I would love to go there. But I'm so far a way. I would love to get souvenirs and shirts and everything from that park if that were possible! If J.K. wouldn't approve of this, I don't know what I'll do (probably cry myself to sleep). I can't wait to ride hippogriffs. I wonder If we'll really even bow to them before we get on the ride. Ooh! Maybe they'll even let us ride a boat to hogwarts and maybe even try to use the sorting hat to find out tables in the canteen! There could even be a game called "shoot-the-death-eater" and we get to hold the stick and yell out latin words and water will probably come out of the wand hit the death eater. 50 points if it's voldie! And maybe they even sell uniforms so we could walk around in harry potter clothes and feel like as if we're in hogwarts. There could be like a hotel there and when we wanna sleep over, the guy who owns the place would probably ask us what house we wanna sleep in. If you're on a budget you could probably sleep in Hufflepuff! But if you're rich and all, you could sleep in Slytherin dorms! Ah.. that would be a dream come true..
Sorry, not likely folks. The visual rights to Harry Potter are owned (in the US at least) by Warner Brothers / Time Warner Inc. Those rights and the licensing involved are worth WAY too much money to share with Universal. Universal is operated by NBC/Universal & Vivendi, a subsidiary of General Electric. While I'm sure they'd love to get a slice of the Potter pie, their exposure wouldn't do anything to grow the Potter brands. Not to say it couldn't be done somewhere else, but I don't think Universal is the place. Of course, I'm just a muggle ... I could be wrong!
BTW - Britishbelle, you mentioned MGM using the Hedwig theme. Disney licensed usage rights for the Potter films and uses them frequently on ABC, ABC Family, and Disney Channel. I think you're right on the money that THEY, Disney, may have an inside track to a Potter themed attraction. In the past several years (post Eisner), Disney has made a resurgence in family and youth-themed interests, and they could certainly cook up some great possibilities. If anyone could do it justice, it would be Disney.
A Harry Potter theme park?... I'm going, no doughts about that.
that would be soooo frickin sweet is they built that. i wasn't too crazy about Universal Studios when i went a few years ago (i prefer Disney World myself), but i would totally go again if they built this "mini-park"!
having a harry potter theme park would be really cool but i doubt they will make one. i am sure that would be a lot of people who would go to it, but would it make enough money? also idt JK would ever go for that...and she HAS to approve.
HOLY CRAP! I WOULD TOTALLY GO!! good thing i already have my annual pass...they could do a quidditch rollercoaster or something like that, and they could build hogsmade and have all of the stores like zonkos and the three broomsticks and stuff like that...but on the other hand it could really suck but universal is awsome at building parks and rides so i bet you that if "harry potter" land passes through, it will be totally kick ass...i hope :)
