Waterstone's calls PS best book in past 25 years
Coinciding with their 25th anniversary, UK bookstore Waterstone's has named Philosopher's Stone the best book in the past 25 years.

Thanks to HarryLatino.com for the tip.

Of course it's the best! Well, actually I'd still say POA, but eh...

Posted by mithrilarrow May 17th 2007

Azkaban was the best.

Posted by Quiscalus May 17th 2007

I liked HBP best, but at least it was an HP book! WOOT!

Posted by Prefiera_de_Gryfalco May 17th 2007

Though maybe I'll stand corrected with Deathly Hallows...JKR says its her favorite...hope it'll be mine!

Posted by AnyaMarcos May 17th 2007

Wow! First Jerry Falwell starts his permanent vacation in Hell, and now this! What a great week. :-)

Posted by Jerry May 17th 2007

Yeah, I think PoA is my own personal favorite, but it's definitely a deserved honor.

Posted by magic_apple_pie May 17th 2007

Great:)

Posted by Hermione_Weasley4ever May 17th 2007

Go SS! I like HBP, but whatever.

Posted by Moudi May 17th 2007

Great! Id still go with OOTP though...

Posted by scurvy_cur May 17th 2007

cool, still PoA and OotP are my favourites but PS started it all and without it being so brilliant the others would never have happened, it was such a break through at the time so thats probably why they chose it

Posted by SugarxSpunxQuill May 17th 2007

To right its the best book! lol...

Posted by forever_charmed May 17th 2007

The movie ruined the book little. I would stick to OotP and PoA. But nothing would be the same without PS.

Posted by katetate May 17th 2007

I liked GOF more but PS was an excellent book. People need to give JK her ratings. It's the movies that have made people forget just how brilliant JK is. The movies have spoiled the books with their oversimplified and retarded plotlines in my opinion.

Posted by SugarxSpunxQuill May 17th 2007

Just wondering here, but why did they change the title to Sorcers Stone in america? I personally think the title Philosophers stone is much better... maybe im a bit prejudiced as that was the title i grew up with but still, Philosophers Stone sounds better...

Posted by sticky May 17th 2007

well it is a harry potter book...what did you expect?????? SugarxSpu nxQuill - i didn't get that either (changing the name fo the ps) but the americans have different names for lots of things.....like jelly is jelo or something...and jelly is jam instaed....confusing.... well done anyway...all of them are brill but my fav is probably gof or poa

Posted by Northern_light May 17th 2007

@SugarxSpunxQuill: Well, I cannot be sure, but since it is a name for a substance the alchemists was looking for, I'd guess that it had different words for it already... I mean, Rowling didn't invent the word "Philosophers stone", so if it had another name in american english, then they should translate it, shouldn't they? But hey, I'm Swedish, so what do I know... Neither one of them can be found in my English Dictionary anyway.

Posted by arry6 May 17th 2007

top 20 whooo!!!!! and of course

Posted by LaurenWeasley May 17th 2007

JK Rowlingg, congratulations! I'm so PROUDD!!

Posted by RedHeadNuphar May 17th 2007

Naa, I liked OOTP best. Or maybe HBP. But, oh well, PS is great, too!!

Posted by PotterManic May 17th 2007

I agree with RedHeadNuphar. OOTP, or HBP, are the best HP books... so far. At least it WAS a Harry Potter book

Posted by hogwartsempress May 17th 2007

GBP was okay... But I LOVED order of the Phoenix. It was DEFINATELY the best book! After that I'd have to agree with PotterManic and RedHeadNuphar... POA was top two. Oh, by the wayThey changed the name from Philosophers sone to Sorceres stone in America because there are different names. They both basically mean the same thing though.

Posted by muggle_magic May 17th 2007

Well it was the book that started it out, the one that introduced us to the magic. It was the one that had me craving for more. GOF is my fav out of all though, then it goes to HBP.

Posted by AnyaMarcos May 17th 2007

The Philosopher's Stone was (is) a mythical substance that could be used to turn any metal into gold. It was around way before JKR was a glint in anyone's eye. :-) They changed the title to Sorcerer's Stone in America because they felt that Americans wouldn't pick up a book with the word "Philosopher' in the title. After all, everyone knows that we Americans all walk around falling down and bumping into stuff cuz weer so dum, u no. :-)

Posted by knowitall May 17th 2007

Everything begann with this book. All the mystery and magic of the Potter Universe. Good choice!

Posted by K8y May 17th 2007

I agree with Quiscalus: HBP is my favourite, too, but any HP book is perfect and will outdo all competition regardless! I think I'll be going to a Waterstones party on July 20th midnight - anyone going to any parties in the South Wales area, perchance? :-)

Posted by No_Siriusly77 May 17th 2007

HBP is my favorite and did anyone find the 3:00 question? i looked at every page.

Posted by Nimue May 17th 2007

The best in 25 years? Best out of *all* books from the last 25 years? For goodness sake, leave the exaggerated claims to the fangirls!

Posted by dark_nymph May 17th 2007

GoF and HBP are my favorite books, but I also loved P/SS, the one that started it all. I'm just glad they said one of the HP books was the best book in 10 years- they couldn't have been more right about that:)

Posted by AnyaMarcos May 17th 2007

Nimue, it's just one bookstore chain. And it's a few months before the next (last) HP book comes out. Publicity!

Posted by HarryPotterFreakers May 17th 2007

Thats exciting, but SS is the worst book in the series. You would think that one of the others would have won.

Posted by SugarxSpunxQuill May 17th 2007

Thanks to sticky, Northern_light, hogwartsempress and AnyaMarcos for helping to clear up my question! Its just one of those things i've always wondered, so thanks again!! xxx

Posted by july21tillhp7 May 17th 2007

na eldest was better then hp #1.. #4 was best

Posted by GreenInsanity May 17th 2007

Wow...I really love Philosopher's Stone, but seriously, best book in 25 years? There have got better books than that... I mean, that's not even my favorite HP book. It's not really the best book in 25 years. I would be really sad if it was, because as cool as that would be, that would mean a lot of the "not greatest" books would really suck. You know what I'm saying? I love HP more than anything in the world, but come on... There's really nothing better?

Posted by harrys_wand May 17th 2007

Gof is better

Posted by sirius_rox May 17th 2007

IMO, the movies aren't at all resemblent to the books they represent, it's that they change little things that don't need to be changed- like in the COS book Prof. Binns told them the legend of the Chamber of Secrets (our very favorite Headmistress told them in the movie)- no one gained anything by that being changed, it wasn't any faster or more effective with her telling them but it made a big difference (at least to me) that they sacrificed the acuracy of the film for no apprent reason. GOF was my fave book, just because about everything fell into place at the end, there was alot of build-up during it with people being murdered randomly or being kidnapped (Bertha Jorkins) that tied it up so nicely. SS (or PS) was (I think) the most acurate movie of the HPs.

Posted by StMungo May 20th 2007

Rubbish. PS is either the worst or the second worst of the series. Just because its the foundation stone of a whole empire...blah, blah, blah. StM
