JKR announces 'Deathly Hallows' plans!
To celebrate the publication of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows on 21st July 2007, J.K. Rowling will be signing the night away at the Natural History Museum in London.US residents can apply at scholastic.com. Other English-speaking publishers may also be allotted tickets; keep an eye on their websites. (for the US).
Ten years after publication of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, the launch of this, the final book in the series, returns to where it all began: with a book, the author and her readers.
1,700 fans will have the opportunity to meet J.K. Rowling and have their book signed at the Natural History Museum. The first 500 randomly selected winners will attend the midnight reading with J.K. Rowling. The subsequent signing is expected to last until dawn. Every ticket holder will receive a free book from Bloomsbury Publishing.
Tickets to the event are free and will be available by online draw from 23rd May. The deadline for applicants is 11th June. To apply for tickets visit Bloomsbury's website.
Jo says, "It has been a long time since I've done a signing and had the chance to speak to readers individually, so I'm delighted that we are launching the book in this way. It will be wonderful for me to get the chance to speak to people who have already read a few chapters while in the queue!
"Good luck if you're applying for tickets, and if you're successful, I'll see you shortly after midnight on July 21st!"
UPDATE: Good news! Raincoast is now offering one Canadian fan a chance to also participate in this event! Thanks to Shoshana for the tip.

Scholastic's age limit seems stupid ... most of the people who have been reading HP since they were released are probably over 21 by now! *rolls eyes*
Oh cool! Too bad I'll be at an academic conference that I have to present. I better not even tempt myself into entering!
I can understand why it's for under 21 year olds only, though. It's because 21 year olds might love Harry Potter, but the children get MUCH more excited. So it's like a sacrifice you have to make, just for the kids :P I don't care though, I'm just 13! But I live in India, so I could be a 100 year old for all it mattered.
HOLY MAGGOGOHGDSIOHGIDSHFIDS! AM SO APPLYING IF THERE IS ONE IN AUS. IF SO PLZ TELL! ahhh haha even though i'm broke i would still go if i got it!
Wow that is sooooo cool!!!
Harry Potter series IS NOT A CHILDREN SERIES!!! Most people know that, but there are a few (WB and her book company) that don't.
Good luck to all who participates! I can only drool whenever such nice events occur as I'm from from Asia. Sigh
wow! I hope someone someone from mugglent can go!! i wish i could go :)
darn it, I'm 21, I can't even enter. That blows... :(
I AM TOTALLY APPLYING!! My parents said I could. Could people from the same house-hold apply? My brother, my sister, and I all would probably want to apply. This is so cool. I shan't get my hopes up though. *tries to push hopes down*
I don't know why there are people who say that there is no age limit. It says right here in Scholastic's rules, #3: "3. Sweepstakes is open to legal residents of the United States who are under 21. " Maybe Bloomsbury is different but for us US residents we have to be under 21. You know, when even Jo herself says these aren't children's books, you'd think they'd get the hint and let everyone apply...
The bad news keeps coming. I'm gonna be on holidays during the release. If only I could've been going to London. WWWHHHYYYY?!
Why does nothing happen in India? >.>
It really is a shame that in the US you have to be under the age of 21 to win. You would think that because HP spans the age gap between children's and adult literature, they would want to prove it in this drawing, but it seems otherwise. In addition, it is sad that I still talk to people on a regular basis who think that they are too "old or advanced" to read the books, and I try my hardest to convince them to the contrary. *sigh*
Oh that's cool!:) Too bad I'm on vacation then and - more importantly because I could still go there while on vacation - on the main land of Europe. I'd love to go to London for some days ... but that's hard to realize. I'll have to work, after all... well, I'll just hope that Jo won't completely stop with making public appearances so I might meet her one day...
Can't I just PRETEND to live in the UK? :P She's never going to come here in The Netherlands! Aaarrrgh, I really really really wanna go!
I too realise that it is not Jo who has set the conditions, but it really is SO unfair that it's not open to non-UK residents!! I'd gladly pay the money for a plane ticket to London if I was allowed to enter...but as I'm not I'll just get hysterical all by myself here in CH on July 21...at least I have my supercool new HP earrings *lol*
In the great tradition of Monty Python and the Holy Grail..."Scholastic, I f**t in your general direction!!!!" Under 21 only, unbelieveable.
Whoa! Sooo unfair. Just for people who lives in countries with english as the official language and in USA just for people under 21. I think this contest is going to make more people angry than hopeful. I mean, the odds of winning wouldn´t be good anyway, but being the last book I think we all had hopes of having an opportunity to go, and to have it crushed just like that...
I'm happy to see a prize draw for such a great event for the last book but it's really unfair that only 7 US residents can win and that only under 21's there may enter, it should be the same as the UK where we can enter if were over 8 years old.
i just can't stop thinking about it, does that mean that harry potter is read only in UK and USA? this is the last book after all, i thought it would be something greater more.. international, i don't know. i'm feeling myself ignored, like i'm not good enough
Awww, I wish I could go. I entered the one for HBP, but I didn't win. But yay for the lucky people who do get to go!!!
Aw, I'm soo happy. I'm going to enter for the US. It would be great to win, although I have no clue what to say to her, besides the usually, "Omg, I love you. I love your book. Please write more."
Oh wowsers. Good Luck to me Muhahaha.... and of course the other people, not in competition with me, in England :P
*cries* oh nnooooo i live in the uk and i could easily enter, but my parents won't let me go...they won't let me go to the ootp premiere either..*cries* oh well *sighs* good luck to those who can go....looks like im back to waiting outside my nearest bookstore with my friend....
I realize the series is a childrens series but many more young adults read the books and are truly devoted fans. I am a 24 yr old american so I have no shot. Many of the fans who grew up with the series are in their mid 20's. I know I'm a bit immature, but never tell me I'm too old to be a Potter fan. If I had the oppourtunity I would fly straight to London to be a part of it all. I understand however that London can't accomadate the mass pandimonium of fans from the world over, but we would still come if allowed. I've always wanted my books signed. JKR is my hero.
OMG!!!! ive just entered and im sooooo excited! god im prying i get a ticket because that would be the best moment ever meeting JO!! WOHO!
OMG!!!! I can't believe this! I'm Engl;ish and have always attended the book releases and film premieres. But this summer i'm going to the states for the very first time to work at a summer camp, which i am EXTREMELy excited about, but I can't believe I won't be in the UK for everything that is happening! The ONE year that i go away for the summer, and england becomes Harry Potter Central! It's not fair! But it's ok. I'll have a great summer anyway. I'm gonna read the kid the new book when it comes out! Good luck to all who enter! I hope that one day I will be lucky enough to meet Jo and get a book signed. But it'll probably only happen once the hype has quieted down. Oh well, I can wait.
I'm going to be in Scotland then! My family is visiting the UK so I figured Edinburgh would be the place to be that night and I reserved a book at a shop there. Apparently I was wrong. It should still be awesome though! I'm entering anyway; I'm sure we can work out back and forth train rides if I win... Goodness though, whoever wins is going to have such an amazing time!! *crosses fingers... and toes?*
Under 21?!?!? I'm 22! *sobs* NOT FAIR! What if I act like I'm 5? Will that count? They never have anything for adults! I started reading Harry Potter when I was younger! People get older you know! Stupid contests...
I just was on the Scholastic website and emailed there customer service department. There also is a general phone number I am going to call them too. Maybe if enough people complain about the age restriction they may lift it. I doubt it will happen but, it is worth a try.
OH MY GOD!!!!!!!!!!!! what do I do if I'm neither British nor American??? I HAVE to be there!
I have to be there! I'm Israeli, and my friends and I are coming all the way from Israel to London just to be there when it comes out... and she will be there? we have to see her!!!!!!! I mean, people here are crying because they need to take a train to london and it's far... I'll do anything to be there (: if I'll be there but I wouldn't be allowed to see her just cuz I'm Israeli... it reminds me of the time i found out she was in my hotel in romania only after i got back to Israel.... )X I WILL be there. (:
those people will be sooo luckyyy ahhh even if i won i prob wouldnt be able to go bc the plane ticket would cost to much from ny:(
how do we get there if we live in America? Pay for a plane ticket?
i've just come back from london and i've been to the museum to see the chess of the first movie when harry and ron played together!!!and there i bought the copie of them!!!!!!! maybe my parents will let me go alone....will be great!!!
uGHHHHHH another reason why I wish I lived in London!!!!
kaj9201, your plane and all is paid for if you win... read the rules/terms on the website and it'll tell you all the info you need! :)
so only 7 americans can go? im confused
Why are things always like this? Urgh.... See, I'm under 21 and a US resident (all non-UK/US people or US people 21 and over... I'm soooo sorry for you guys... at least I have some chance), but, my mom is sick with cancer, and I wouldn't have a guardian to take me (I don't know any adult Potter fans either). It's slightly ironic that the US only has 7 winners but probably the same amount or more fans, where the UK has so many more winners. Then again, I always find things like this occur with me in the Potter fandom. It's kind of like how there are NO Potter events/Mugglenet/Leaky/Sc holastic events anywhere near Florida, where I live, beyond the neighborhood Borders release parties (which are fairly unexciting). Too bad my mom had the bright idea to move from San Jose, California to stupid, boring Florida.... (darn living costs)
WAAAAAAAAAH booo can't enter ... so what if I don't live in an English speaking country ... my English is pretty good (except for my spelling but I don't think they test you on that hehe) anyway I soooo wish I could enter but I guess there's not much of a chance to win anyway. disapointing really :(
I can't believe you have to be under 21....that's so depressing. Scholastic has always viewed it as a children's book though, unlike Bloomsbury who markets the book both to children and adults. You would think that the primary US publisher would get more than 7 tickets though out of 1700. Oh well....bah for me, I guess I'll just have to stick with my current plans.
so basically, only 7 americans can go. okay. but people in the UK can just apply for it and get tickets?
I live in the U.S. and I'm going to be 23 when Deathly Hallows comes out. The conest should be open to everyone. Also I'm going on HP Fan Trips London Book 7 Release Trip so I don't need flown out to London. This is really unfair.
What about Europe?!!!?? Don't they understand that there are English HP fans in countries besides the UK and the USA. This is the last chance to go. *cries*
I live in Norway, and I went to London(and England) for the first time in my life this weekend. I even went to that museum! :p I guess they chose that place juuust because of me! :P Anyway, me and a friend ordered tickets to London for the release of DH the same day the date was made official. I've been nervous that all the fun stuff might be happening in Edinburgh, so I couldn't be happier right now! Or.. I guess I could, if only that "competition" was open to others than just residents of either US or UK... 'Cause i'd looooooove to go! Even though the chances of actually getting tickets are as small as an ant... Still... soooo happy Jo's going to London
Yay! Just entered :) *fingers crossed*
Not as cool as her book 6 plans I think. Plus holding it in London is pretty selfish, as if people can afford to get there and stay over night. Should have done it in Edinburough again, it's cheaper. It's like to go but would need somewhere to stay, and it would all take up time i could be reading the book!
ok, here goes: "MICAH DID IT, MICAH DID IT, MICAH DID IT!" ok- i am now officially sure that JK Rowling listens to MuggleCast! && her favorite MuggleBoy is Micah... --- on the other hand, this is the first time i have dislike living in the "Land of the Free". [aka United States] not that i am saying anything against the US but i sure do wish i could have had the chance to go- that's not fair. if i remember right: "the united states of america gave a chance && loved Harry Potter before the rest of the world did..." again, im just saying. no offense to the Brits and Europeans. i'm just REALLY jealous.
oooooo i hope that i get tickets!!!! also, if i do get them, i hope i can save up for train fare!!!!
