Swedish Deathly Hallows translation may give clues
Tilden, the Swedish Potter publisher, has revealed on their official website that JK Rowling has provided an alternative DH title to foreign countries: Harry Potter and the Relics of Death. The second title was released by Jo and Bloomsbury because the phrase "Deathly Hallows" is hard to translate without being able to read the novel.

Relics of Death can easily translate to dödsrelikerna, and now many are speculating over exactly what these relics are. Thanks to everyone who e-mailed with this information!

hopefully we'll get some clues out of this!

Posted by jen_92 May 25th 2007

Wow, you'd think horcruxes, right, but those aren't really relics of death, just pieces of soul, I dunno...interesting...

Posted by Hilere May 25th 2007

OH mY GOODNESS! Yay I've been waiting for some foreign titles that were actually decided by Jo! This could mean sooo many things :D Relics are usually from saints right? and saints can also be known as hallows - think All Hallows Eve -the day before All Saints Day

Posted by SpaceyStacey May 25th 2007

OMG 4th comment. Relics eh? Hmm...

Posted by plutogirlgenius May 25th 2007

O wow, that's a very cool title. It's definately a better clue to stem off of than "Deathly Hallows". I can't wait to hear the theories on this one...

Posted by bettymonster May 25th 2007

Hmmm. I like the title.

Posted by Eimear_d69 May 25th 2007

yeah relics means they're holy and old?? I think it has to do with Hogwart's four founders...they are practically saints in the wizarding world. Maybe their items (such as the sword etc) when reunited have a special power?? And it's connected to the secret graveyard in Hogwarts JK mentioned in the poa film?

Posted by Maebh May 25th 2007

there's a very strong theory out in the fandom that the deathly hallows relate to the four great objects of power connected with arthurian legend. i think it's over at hp lexicon if anyone is curious.

Posted by Nailson May 25th 2007

well, im interested in what mugglecast has to say on it

Posted by jthhere May 25th 2007

In tradition Christian theology a Relic is an actual piece of the person or object that can be venerated. In the case of a Saint, these are usually bones. It would seem as though there are parts of a dead person referenced by the title, a very apt description of Voldemort's horcruxes I would say.

Posted by Saki May 25th 2007

yay . . . this in a way confirms the "Harry Potter and the Hallows of Hogwarts" copyright title put up for the publication of OotP (I mean if in fact these relics belonged to the founders) YAY soooo excited . . . can't wait for July!

Posted by sesaru May 25th 2007

Perhaps it tells something that Voldemort failed to see about Horcruxes. Something unexpected... Like the very old magic that protected Harry in the very first place. There is no magic without consecuences. Great! First time I write here!

Posted by ginnyweasley393 May 25th 2007

Yea this is really cool...I hope the translations give us clues...I CANT WAIT UNTILL IT COMES OUT! I AM BEING TORTURED! Its worse than the Crutiatus Curse....I am going 2 cry when I have it in my hands!

Posted by fantfreak May 25th 2007

cool o!

Posted by luv_hp_4ever May 25th 2007

OOOOO!!!! this is soooo exciting!!! and scary!!!! 56 days!!!! omg relics of death!!! hint hint!!!!! i dont know if it is good that we know this know!!! im sooo scared!!!!!! its horrible!!!!! ahhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!1

Posted by woodsmom May 25th 2007

I just hope that "deathly hallows" and the "relics of death" aren't just fancy names for Horcruxes. A horcrux sure would be considered hallowed by Voldemort.

Posted by Lumos_Walcnevar May 25th 2007

Oh my Gryffindor. So, the title almost definitely refers to the horcruxes! This is all happening too fast. . .and yet not fast enough.

Posted by x_radishes May 25th 2007

Ooooh, spooky! Man, I can't to hear what Mugglecast has to say about this.

Posted by GummyWorms May 25th 2007

I think it is Stonehenge. Henge means gallows, which rhymes with Hallows (even though they do not mean the same thing, I know!) But then maybe Stonehenge will have some holy purpose in the next book. We'll see soon!

Posted by mosmodre_Jul31 May 25th 2007

ooooohhhh. clues...am I smelling a horcrux???!!

Posted by luv_hp_4ever May 25th 2007

lol interesting theory GummyWorms... lol. id laugh if u were right! but i dontr think so... but thats just me... and yes mosmordre i smell horcruxes as well....!!!!!!!!

Posted by Harry_iPodter May 25th 2007

That's so awesome!

Posted by yokata May 25th 2007

This is quite fascinating! I would inject my own theories into these comments, but considering the brilliance of J.K. Rowling, she'll surpass us all. :D

Posted by Iceking May 25th 2007

This really annoyed me I don't like spoilers/clues of any kind and Mugglenet has just gave us further insight into the novel, not considering that some people want to go into the novel knowing as little as possible. Please put some sort of spoiler warning

Posted by viki_hp_nerd May 25th 2007

oh wow!

Posted by luv_hp_4ever May 25th 2007

the results of my search for relics on answers.com... Relics (European mythology) "The preservation of objects, believed to contain virtue because of former associations, is very ancient." then it says some stuff about st. augustine that no one cares about... then it says... "It became the custom to carry relics as a means of protection from evil influences. In 1066 William the Conqueror went into action at Hastings wearing round his neck a string of relics given to him by the Pope. Voices were raised against the cult—Alcuin (735–804), the ecclesiastical adviser of Charlemagne, said that it was better to copy the example of the saints than to treasure their bones—but it continued with unabated vigour throughout the Middle Ages." plus a definition... "Somethi ng that has survived the passage of time, especially an object or custom whose original culture has disappeared" hmmmm.. . something to think about!!

Posted by nineandthreequarters May 25th 2007

My first impulse is to think of Horcruxes- specifically those made from objects belonging to the founders. And now to read what others have posted!

Posted by heather_s_70056 May 25th 2007

If you read mugglenet's book, they give a nice description of what these relics might be.

Posted by luv_hp_4ever May 25th 2007

something i forgot to add to my previous comment (look up) ... maybe since it says something about how william the conquerer went into some battle wearing some relics from gthe past around his neck, maybe that pouch around harry's neck on the us childrens cover is some relics from the past or his parent???!!!! probably not, but it is just an idea... plus im really bored. i would think it means a horcrux except that it means something holy right. well, they are holy to Voldemort I guess... hmmmmmmm puzzling...

Posted by eyeheartlupin May 25th 2007

All right, Mugglecast, get to work :)

Posted by moonshyne May 25th 2007

This is an incredible piece of information. Though we still don't know what the "deathly hallows" might be, we can start ruling things out...only 56 days left and then we'll know for sure!

Posted by eyeheartlupin May 25th 2007

Okay so maybe I have more to say. When I read Relics of Death I didn't really think of horcruxes because to me, they're more like Relics of Life.. after all, you use them to keep yourself alive. But, then I thought, you have to kill someone in order to create them, right? And some people see splitting your soul as a form of death I suppose.. so perhaps they do refer to the horcruxes (how blase is that?). I rather like all of the comments talking about how it may be referring to the relics of the four founders, but I can't help but think it's just talking about the horcruxes in general and not about the founders' relics necessarily. After all, a "relic" can simply be "An object kept for its association with the past; a memento." It doesn't HAVE to be old. We already know Voldemort kept trophies (and still does, apparently) so I only expect it to be items that are tied to Voldemort in one way or another (which, yes, I know, could technically be the relics of the founders..) Anyway! This is what Mugglecast is good at, so I'll let them do all of the work! :)

Posted by luv_hp_4ever May 25th 2007

WAIT!!!!! i just went and translated deathly hallows into swedish and then translated that back into english and it came up with " Undying Hall"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!! interesting nd possibly totally irrelevent but yeah just thought id share!!!!!!

Posted by Bradyboy May 25th 2007

That means that the Deathly Hallows are probaly the horcruxes!

Posted by potterlovver814 May 25th 2007

Horcruxes of course... relics of death-- Voldemort's death presumably!! w00t! exxxciiiiited!!

Posted by kind May 25th 2007

A relic or relict could even be a hangover.

Posted by sushieater May 25th 2007

wow... relics of death. I wonder if we can get any clues out of this title.

Posted by LindaW May 25th 2007

repeat after me : HORCRUXES

Posted by Travis May 25th 2007

Cool! So this confirms that the deathly hallows are in fact objects, most likely horcruxes.

Posted by harrypotterprincess08 May 25th 2007

I love the idea of translating it back from Swedish. She did say that "the phrase "Deathly Hallows" is hard to translate without being able to read the novel." So maybe it is an undying hall. If nothing else it is a cool idea. I'd like to think it means something more than just the horcruxes. Most likely it is just a reference to the horcruxes. I can't wait for mugglecast to do their thing.

Posted by Secret_Muse May 25th 2007

Iceking...That makes absolutely no sense at all. Mugglenet is great about preventing spoilers. This isn't one. It's just the title of the book, in another language. You couldn't obtain any extra information about the book by knowing this, than you could've by knowing the title of Deathly Hallows. I personally would like to hear one way how this new bit of information has ruined the book in any way for you.

Posted by kind May 25th 2007

All right! The Swedish title has been released officially. The translation is confirmed and Joanne Rowling gave this piece of information (Relics Of Death) to the foreign publishers. So if this is a spoiler it´s type an authorized spoiler by Joanne Rowling herself! Nothing to worry or to compalin about. It will help us to find a way out of the jungle of unnecessary speculations which is good indeed.

Posted by danny1018 May 25th 2007

it sucks that this news came today cause mugglecast probably already recorded their episode for this week so we probly have to wait till next week for a discussion on this

Posted by kind May 25th 2007

I found by chance a newspaper article from Poland. In this article the expression Relics of Death stands for TORTURE instruments. Here: http://www.warsawvoice.pl /archiwum.phtml/13136/ (2002)

Posted by iheartmugglecast May 26th 2007

Wow... that's so freaky!

Posted by deathcabforcutie May 26th 2007

omg kind thats really creepy. i cant imagine them having torture instruments in the harry potter books. gummy worms i like your stonehedge theory too because the cover looks very stonehedge like. i hope no one guesses what is gonna happen in the book or ill be dissapointed. the more we wait, the more good theories make me think that i know what will happen in the next book! lol ok ill go to bed now ta ta

Posted by AdrianTresk May 26th 2007

That doesn't really need to be spelled out to anyone does it? Relics of Death could only be Voldemorts Horcrux's - Afterall, he had to kill people to split his soul (hence the Death) and then he transferred the split soul fragments into his prized possessions (Which are obviously the Relics)

Posted by Ravenclawswisdom May 26th 2007

Wow, just think of all the new theories popping up all over the internet. I looked up relics and here is one of the definitions I found, "something that is kept for its interesting associations, for example, with somebody famous or with a historic event" it sounds alot like the objects Voldemort uses for his Horcruxes. But the death part doesn't make sense, horcruxes are supposed to keep you immortal, so it doesn't exactly fit.

Posted by HPgeek4LIFE May 26th 2007

thats exciting. relic sounds like relish. YAY PICKLES!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by MlleMolly May 26th 2007

I think that 'Relics of Death' is an ALTERNATIVE title and does not necessarily mean the same as 'Deatly Hallows', in fact I could bet on it. I dout she has any idea how to translate into Swedish, so when the translator were having problems of putting the title in to Swedish she, rather than explain the meaning behind the title, gave an ALTERNATIVE title. And 'Relics of Death' sounds lot better than just 'Horcruxes'.
