Universal Studios to open Harry Potter theme park!
Official Concept Art:
Hogwarts | Hogsmeade | Owl's View of Park | Logo
Latest Developments (10 AM EST):
- Official park website now open; visitors can sign up for e-mail updates.
- JK Rowling: "The plans I’ve seen look incredibly exciting, and I don’t think fans of the books or films will be disappointed."
Universal Studios and Warner Brothers made a joint announcement this evening from Leavesden Studios on the set of Dumbledore's Office to reveal that a Harry Potter theme park is currently in development. The image to the left is the first piece of concept art for the park: Hogsmeade Village.
Here's what we learned from Potter set designer Stuart Craig and a representative from Universal Studios (both of them hosted the big reveal):
- "The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Orlando Resort"
- Announcement was made live via internet at 12:01 AM EST today to select media, including MuggleNet.
- Areas of park to include Hogsmeade, Hogwarts Castle, and the Forbidden Forest.
- 20 engineers working on project.
- Universal came to WB looking for authenticity.
- Potter park to be built in "Islands of Adventure" area of Universal.
- Stuart wants to "take his grandchildren" to the park.
- Opening early 2010.
- Universal's Potter website to be available at this link.
- JK Rowling has been involved "since the very beginning" of the project. Also "supportive and encouraging."
- Stuart thinks that the park will be better off in the United States.
- Have been in design "for at least a year and a half."
- "Important that the theme park represents the entire saga from Book 1 to Book 7"
In a rather cute way to end the announcement, the Universal representative asks Stuart Craig, "Now where's Dumbledore?" Stuart paused for a moment, looked around the office, and replied, "He was just here."
We'll be discussing these developments on this week's episode of MuggleCast (due out over the weekend). This post will be updated frequently as we learn more!

This is awesome! I think they should have a virtual reality Quidditch, but that's probably pushing it a bit. It's great and all, (and i don't mean this to be disrespectful), but I think they should have it in England. We don't have any major attractions like that but in the States you've got Disney Theme Parks and Harry Potter shops and loads of things. No one comes to Englanhd just to visit Alton Towers or whatever, so they should build it here. Harry Potter is British after all. I mean, it's great, no matter what, but I wish they'd built it here - you know, true British weather, heh, heh, give it a real feeling of the dank and darkness. But anyway, can't wait!
this is gona be sooo *awesome* ...i'm just scared i'll never be able to see it.... :(
OMGOSH!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Now I have something I can save up for! I must go! Too bad it's not closer to Australia though..... I'm so exited!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Not really sure what to think about this. On one hand, it'll probably kill the books. On the other hand, it might be cool to explore Hogwarts castle and Hogsmede and all. :|
It's such a shame. I highly doubt I'll ever go. Maybe, but probably not. I really don't like the theme park idea it makes Harry Potter seem too kiddish
OMG! i can't wait! as soon as it comes out im flying over there and going to see it! this is so cool, i've always thought the HP world would make a great themepark. ;)
No way should it be in America! It's should be at home in England!
I find "Stuart thinks that the park will be better off in the United States" completely offensive. These are British books by a British author. The reason why the the films have been below average is because JKR allowed an American film company to produce the movies (the best bit about them are the British actors) I find yet again something that us Brits have to be proud of is being completely hi-jacked by American corporations. No offense meant to US Harry Potter fans... you are all great but I wish people would give Britain the credit it deserves!!! Sorry rant over.... ;-)
I think Stuart meant that in a “population” way. The US is a pretty densely populated country (not saying that in a condescending way). To be honest, the US probably has more Harry Potter fans than other places. I don't think it has anything to do with "Oh, it's the US and they should get everything first because they are, of course, ten times better than Britain." I've read posts on here from past articles like the one about the UK getting Order of the Phoenix before the US. I read the comments and the US fans seemed completely fine with it. Hardly anyone was complaining. Then, of course, when the date for Order of the Phoenix in the US was moved up ahead of the UK release date, I read comments. A lot of fans from the UK completely bashed the US saying it was greedy and selfish because they "have to have everything first." I have nothing against the UK and, in fact, love London and I think the people their are nothing short of awesome. I just don't get why it always has to be a, I don't know, 'contest' about who gets what first. Anyway, I think the theme park looks amazing. I hope they have a Department of Mysteries area, maybe. Imagine walking through the Hall of Prophecies! And all of the little shops. You'll probably be able to buy Zoinko products and they'll probably have butter beer (like green eggs and ham at the Dr. Suess place). You'll be able to buy robes and wands and probably all sorts of things. Not to mention the rides! They'll probably have like a Hungarian Horntail roller coaster or something.
YEY!!!!!!! I went to Universal Studios last year....and I'll go in 2010 too!!!!!! CAN'T WAIT!!!!!
It sounds like a great idea! A Harry Potter theme park, I've been waiting for this for a long time. However, I feel that the park should be made in England. I mean, yes, America is the most powerful country in the world, but it does seem kind of unfair that a book by a British Author, set in England, at a British boarding school is going to be made in the Staes, when it should really be made somewhere in England. And I don't just think this because I am British, because I'm not, I'm Australian. But it peeves me that a theme park based on a fantastic book by such a wonderful author is being made in America instead of the place that it is originally from.
Nice! I'd really like to go, only problem is that I live about 3000 miles away in the UK!
A-M-A-Z-I-N-G-!-!-! words are not enough to express my feelings...I'm so excited...Thank you JKR!!! for writing the novels...now fans will have a chance to have a feel of Hogwarts...images are very promising!!!
Oh. My. God. RIDES AND HARRY POTTER COMBINED! SQUEEEEEEE! Who else thinks there'll be a ride called "The Horntail"? I CAN'T WAIT FOR 2010! Only three years away!
I am so there. This is so great!
to sbwilson - 'Where else would it be built?' There are other countries in the world! Just so you know. It doesn't always have to be america. America ALWAYS gets everything they want. It's sooooo annoying.
YYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYEEEE EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESS SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
-screams- OH. MY. GOSH. My life is now complete. SQUEE!! -dances around like a spaz- This is amazing!! I'm sooooo excited! It'll be done just in time for my graduation, too. Best graduation present EVER!! YAAAAAAAAAAAAAY!! This is the PERFECT thing to brighten up exam week.
koolzies: I think you are viewing the Mugglenet posts rather baisedly. When everyone thought that the UK was getting OOTP first there were a fair few American complaints!! My Argument isn't about the American people it is about Corperate American "Disneyfying" everything! If a great American literary character had a theme park created in the UK it would provoke the same reaction from the US
whooha!!! yey awsome
Oh.My.God.. Is this real? I can't believe, this is a perfect way to make Harry Potter live forever, and plus, when we've finished all the books after Deathly Hallows, and all the movies are done and dusted, we'll all have this to look forward to! This is brilliant! I screamed when I read about it, and it's only a measley three years to wait, which in honesty, really isn't that long. We waited 2 years for DH, and we're almost there, so it won't be that long until we will all actually be stood there, in that Theme Park. So excited! I'm from the UK, and while I agree it would have been a lot more fairer and decent to put it in the UK, nothing is going to change that now, and besides, at least we have a HP Theme Park, no matter where it is, and I don't mind so much that it's in America, I have been the Universal Studios twice and it was one of the greatest times in my life, so I really don't mind. Bring it on! :)
How lucky am I living only 25mins away from all Orlando FL attractions including Universal Studios. "would do better in the US" yes it would, do you have any idea how many people come to Orlando FL on vacation from the UK and other parts of the world just to visit Disney World? Many rather go to Disney World then Disneyland in CA........then going there attracts them to the other theme parks around like Universal Studios and Sea World. I live in tourtistville.....Kissimm ee and believe me there are 1000s of tourist each year that come from around the world rather then within the US itself.........so don't feel discouraged or jealous because they will be building it here in Orlando FL USA.........if anything it's a great excuse to give your parents for a heck of a vacation to the USA :)
I live in Orlando - so I'll be there opening day. I am so excited. They have always had an area at Islands of Adventure (IOA) right next to the Dueling Dragons roller coaster that was sort of a wizard type area. I have always said this needed to be done as Harry Potter and not this sort of non-descript village. Might just have to get new annual passes...
i think there is going 2 b a broomstick/quidditch ride.
OMG!!!!!!!!! I'm so gonna go there when it opens!!! Woot woot some of the coolest news ever!!!!!! I just hope it's going to be big enough!!! This is so freaking awesome!!!!! Thank you Andrew for reporting this important bit of news. I LOVE HARRY POTTER!!!!!!!!!!!
Alright so im totally going to this for my birthday my freshman year of college...too bad Its so far away. Anyone else think they should let MuggleNet have a gift shop in hogsmeade?
OMG OMG OMG OMG, I'M SOOOO GONNA GO THERE. Do they allow people to live in the Harry Park? I'd be the first buyer!
Im Happy but annoyed that its in America rather than England. WHY does America get everything before us why why why why why can we just have this!!! Its an english book after all mehhhhhh just sour grapes i guess :(
I am loving the idea of a Harry Potter theme park, however I am very dissappointed it is in America. After all it is an English book with an English author and it annoys me as I will never be able to go to the park. I am a student with no way of affording just getting a plane ticket to America, let alone the ticket for the park itself. It does make it very unfair on families in the UK and fans who may never be able to see it. They could make one similiar in the UK which will be good and make it alot easier. But i see it as another money making scheme, it will be some rollercoasters and some walk through villages, thats it probably. Which in itself would be amazing but not spectacular. I am very unhappy I am never going to be able to visit the park and see it, and its just another way to push kids into pushing their parents to take them to a theme park and make them money.
"IT SHOULD ABSOLUTELY BE BUILT IN THE U.S...WHERE ELSE WOULD IT BE BUILT?!" Typical!! And a silly question really! It may be a novel concept but how about building it where it is set and hence where it is supposed to be, ie England! I agree with British_Boy - completely offensive!!
You guys need to remember that the concept of this whole theme park idea is mostly based more on the whole moive concept then the books.......why? because it's warner bros who is mainly involved. Even if they say they want it to be as authentic as possible based on the books we all know i will be more based on the movies.........they only thing they needed from JK is permisson because of any copyright issues etc......other than that it's 99.9% warner bros involvement.........Unive rsal Studios is a place that has attractions based on movies not books if you know anything about this place...........NOW maybe if the theme was REALLY based on the books and ONLY the books then it would make LOTS of sense to have it made in the UK and not in the USA. Do you all see the big picture here now???? I really don't think it's nice of you guys to bash other countries as well, it borders on racisim.
I can't wait to see how it turns out!
If you want the authentic Harry Potter experience, build it in Britain where you can get all that lovely authentic rain :D To be honest, I think the whole idea of a Harry Potter theme park is a very typical American thing to do so I'm fine with it being built there. One request though: Please, please, PLEASE use British actors to portray the wizards/witches etc/ Oh dear, I can hear the American Dick-Van-Dyke esque accents now...
OMFG. This is the BEST thing that's EVER happened. I can't believe that Universal Studios & Warner Bros. are actually managing to make the amazing world JK Rowling has created come to life! Expect to see me there on opening day. This is SO darn cool.
Yes! This is awesome! Thank You! Yes, Ive always wanted to go to one of these, a Harry Potter Theme Park! Awesome! Thanks!
On another note, I will be a poor student at university at that point so I better get saving :D
This is so cool! Universal Studios is THE one who has the know-how and money and workforce to build these fantasy sets as close to real-life scale as possible. Harry Potter will be forever popularized (even more) for future generations! It is wonderful to have a new, contemporary theme. You notice all the rest, like pirates, are variations on an old theme (oldies but goodies, of course!).
sweet!! and best of all its IN THE U.S.!!!! =)
omgsh I live like 20 minutes away from there! ORLANDO FTW
x_x; They're going to try and suck every last dime from the Harry Potter series, aren't they?
Woo, very exciting and all that, but why is it in America??:( Harry's English, surely that's enough of a reason to have it over here? Plus that way JKR could oversee parts of its construction, to make sure its authentic... Still very exciting though :D
OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I MUST GO TO THAT!!!! I WILL FIND A WAY!!!
Wow the pictures are beatiful.
Yahoo says Late 2009, but you say Early 2010. Which is it?
YAY!! I AM SOOOOOOOOOOO EXCITED!! I AM GOING THERE!! maybe I could get a job there....?!
that could be amazing if they did it right! although we would have to wait like three years i'll be graduating then
whooohooo!! that is soo cool! :] love, katie jane
I live an hour and a half away from Orlando. Do you have any idea how many times I'll be going to that place??? I am exited beyond belief, you have no idea how much this has made my day, the concept art seems so true to everything I had ever imagined. I love it!!!
CLASS !!!!!!!!!!! I can't wait, i'll be 37 when it opens but i'll still be the biggest kid there when i do get over. I hope they do it right !!
