JKR's open book tour of the US
JKR's open book tour of the US JK Rowling announced plans today to embark on an "Open Book Tour" of the United States. From her news section:

"In October I will be touring the USA for the first time since 2000. The Tour will include four events, three to be held for schoolchildren in Los Angeles, New Orleans and New York City and one event in New York City for any U.S. Harry Potter fan who wins a ticket through a sweepstakes to be held by Scholastic, my US publishers. At each event, I will read from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the seventh and final book in the Harry Potter series, answer questions about the entire series, and sign copies of the latest book."

Visit Scholastic's Potter section beginning July 30th for information on how to enter this sweepstakes and complete rules.

Awsomeness... It would be even more awesome if she'd do a tour of Australia too...

Posted by DeaflyHolla Jun 14th 2007

I hate when people type in 1st? so I'm not going to do it because I have tooooo much class (sticks tongue out)!

Posted by jeka110392 Jun 14th 2007

Lol, but Deafly you did type 1st? So does that mean you hate yourself for doing it, or that since you did type it, you dont have class or what?? =P

i feel both happy and frustrated. HP fans exist all over the world. But JKR seems definitely to get a preference for US fans. I know i must sound jealous and stupid. Well maybe i am. But most of all i'm sad. JKR should realise that the book sells too in spain, italy, china, japan, france, australia, etc. Well... i suppose there's nothing we can do against USA supremacy. But it is frustrating and so not HP. I mean, in the books we can feel she does not make difference between people coming from different countries. I suppose people are different between what they write and what they do. And again: i'm not angry, i'm really, really sad.

Posted by asleep_at_the_moment Jun 14th 2007

hmm. no good if you dont live in the us...

What about Canada? It's not that far from New York! All she has to do is take a plane to Toronto one day and do a reading there!

Posted by scotty_hp Jun 14th 2007

Awww ... well done american. Why doesnt she tour UK? LOL well I live in Edinburgh so I see her quite alot.

Posted by ravenclawsheart Jun 14th 2007

Yay i live in America; i can't wait (Top 10)

Posted by iceboots Jun 14th 2007

I will be so jealous of this if I don't win tickets to the UK reading.

Posted by ravenclawsheart Jun 14th 2007

oops not top ten sorry 11, i know i cant count. Others have made a fair point, why the US, why not Canada or the UK. Anyway the closest t me is New York City, which is i don't know over 500 miles away.

Posted by Tineke Jun 14th 2007

Oh my god, that is sooo cool!! the fact that she can finaly awnser EVERY question... she never has to say "I can't awnser that" again! Yeah! :-D

Posted by TheRealLifeHermioneGranger Jun 14th 2007

I WANNA GO!!!!! "Schoolchildren" ? Is that from a specific school, or open to any school-aged child, or what. (And, why doesn't she come to Philadelphia- my parents will never take me to NYC.....)

Posted by Shir Jun 14th 2007

too bad I don't live in the US. sounds amazing though. good luck to the americans here with the sweeptakes

Posted by medion Jun 14th 2007

OK i've gotta admit if i lived in toronto or sumwer like that i would feel pretty peeved that jkr was going to NY but not taking a day out to go to canada but then other canadians would want her to go to their own home town. What i'm tryin to say is where would she stop? Should she go to spain? france? japan? greece? et cetera et cetera. She's only one woman and can't be everywhere. And as for ppl sayin that she should do a book tour in the UK well she does plenty of television interviews around england so why not go to them and see her? i mean we here in the uk have the best deal because she is from here so if you live in edinburgh then you can even just see her at the local supermarket, who else gets to do that? Also i think america deserve to see her again being as its been 7 years since the last tour and many ppl who like HP now didnt realy know too much about her bak then, i mean i was only 11 then so i just cared about the book, not the author! I do apologise for such a long message.

COME TO CANADA JO, PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by harrypotterwiz101 Jun 14th 2007

YAY!!! I am so going to the one in New Orleans, if I can. You know how hard it would be to get in?!

Posted by wtwin Jun 14th 2007

You guys are so lucky. I swear you get everything in the US. JK, come to Australia, we love you too!!

Posted by lotte26 Jun 14th 2007

Wouldn't it be better if you could buy tickets not just have the odd chance that you might be able to go... there are other fans that arent schoolchildren either lol. She should come to New Zealand... gooood that would be coool

Posted by megblack89 Jun 14th 2007

Australia ? We wish.

Posted by EeveeLOVE Jun 14th 2007

nooooooooooooooooooooo! :( She's gonna be here in LA and I won't even be able to see her. that sucks sooo much! :(

Posted by Travis Jun 14th 2007

!!!OMG!!! I go to school in New Orleans! I guess they probably aren't selecting college students though, but maybe I'll run into her on Burbon Street!

Posted by CeciliaJ Jun 14th 2007

I have to say that all this sucks a bit. It feels like Us and Uk are the only two countries that count. What about the rest of the world?! Why not have any competitions and fun things in the rest of Europe?

Posted by soccerluver13 Jun 14th 2007

Why does NOTHING ever happen in Ohio ?

Posted by mcorleone Jun 14th 2007

Why only New York for all fans? She should come to Florida to do a dual appearance with Mary Grandpre and also to promote the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios not to mention its much nicer here than N.Y.

Posted by tonks5 Jun 14th 2007

I would give everything to go. Oh I hope I'll be able to!!!

Posted by Sirius_Black Jun 14th 2007

This is great news for US HP fans, but Jo, can you come to Australia?! Pleeeeease... :) *makes Unbreakable Vow with JKR (while Mrs Weasley isn't watching)* Haha now you have to come!

Posted by hpozfan Jun 14th 2007

YES!!!!!!

Posted by MJLovegood Jun 14th 2007

Schoolchildren? I'll be in LA late summer and I won't even be able to see her? :(

Posted by GramSybil Jun 14th 2007

I wish they could tape this, so all of us could see and hear all the questions and answers.

Posted by themangoblossom Jun 14th 2007

NOOOOO! Lucky people who live near those places!

Posted by h_boo Jun 14th 2007

YESSSSS! but wait. what does "schoolchildren" mean? oh no! high schoolers better count!!!!!!!!

Posted by hp_plot Jun 14th 2007

it sucks totally. wats this? givin preference only 2 te US? i feel terrible JKR... y cant u cum 2 oter contries also? IT PURELY SUCKS

Posted by DibaScuven Jun 14th 2007

WooooHooooo! I am 30 minutes from New Orleans, which by the way was my old stomping ground in my yesteryear. I yelled when I read New Orleans! We are so well known for our corrupt politicians that we usually get skipped for cool things. Anyway, now I have kids and will be entering them into the contest by what ever means possible. My 8 and 6 year olds are so engrossed in the books that if I do not read a chapter a night they feel I have slighted them in a big way. Sorry, to all those who do not live in the area. I know what a let down it is.

Posted by shadowkitten Jun 14th 2007

For all of you who are saying, "Why only americans?" You have to understand we're thinking, "Why only New Yorkers?" The United States is pretty large, and if you live in certain areas of the country, events like this tend to miss you. It's frustrating, because everything seems to happen in the Northeastern and Southwestern parts. If you live anywhere else, it'll cost as much as travelling to another country, almost, to get to New York or L.A. or any of those other places where things always happen. Unless you have a lot of money to spend, it's not worth it. It would be so nice if something Harry Potter-ish came to Florida (even MuggleCast/Mugglenet), although I shouldn't complain because we have Mary Grandpre...

Posted by essance_of_luna Jun 14th 2007

LASKDFJSLDKJFSIERU ok I must plan to go see her :]]]]] this is amazing!

Posted by CeciliaJ Jun 14th 2007

Shadowkitten! I understand what you mean, but atleast your "market" get's a chance. We can't even enter a competiton if we wanted to..

Posted by fathermackenzie Jun 14th 2007

Well of course JKR can't be everywhere. But still, you can't deny she (or whoever decides where she goes) is focused on english-speaking countries. and i'm not one of those who say they won't buy book7 or stuff like that. I'm still a hp fan and i still admire sincerely JKR and i still love her characters and the things she created in the books. but it's the same every time there's a new hp book, the foreign editors keep saying "we're in negotiations to make JKR coming" but it never happens. and honestly i feel really sad about that. even if she came in my country, i may won't be able to get at the reading or whatever, but at least that would prove that JKR gives importance to countries that are not english-speaking. I feel forgotten, see?

Posted by Slytherin_vs_Hufflepuff Jun 14th 2007

I agree, shadowkitten. I was soooo excited when I saw JKR was to come to the US- only to find she'd be in LA, NYC, and New Orleans. It seriously isn't worth it to drive anywhere cos of gas prices (I live in Illinois, and we have some of the highest gas prices in the US), and flying gets expensive. Nothing EVER happens in the Midwest, but we have gotten a few stops by Ben and Emerson with the MN book. *shurgs* I think the only thing worse than not having JKR come to your country is to have her in your country (doing four events, mind you!) and not being able to go to ANY of them.

Posted by HolyHorcruxes Jun 14th 2007

OMFG!!!! But... I'm not going to win the sweepstakes... so... I'll just give up my hope now. ='( Maybe some years from now she'll come back to more than four select cities!

Posted by OxfordGirl727 Jun 14th 2007

OMG!!!!!!!!!!!! I really wannna win but I don't wanna get my hopes up cause i prob wont. wait do u have to win a sweepstakes to go to the l.a one? or can u just go there? cause im only like 6 hours away lol 1 1/2 on the plane so maybe my parents would let me go.

Posted by HolyHorcruxes Jun 14th 2007

People in other countires, that is horribly sad and all, but really, she'd have to either a) learn to speak about 57 different languages or b) get a translater, who could never say things juussttt the same way JKR does. Plus, she's got three young kids and a husband. She's given her life for 10 or more years to HP and HP fans, so, now that she's done writing, she may want to spend some time with her family. I do realize that still really really stinks for you guys... I'm sure MN will have videos up from all four stops asap, though. Hopefully, since so few people can go!

Posted by july21tillhp7 Jun 14th 2007

NNNNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOO!! !!!! come to chicago!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !

Posted by Quantummilkshake Jun 14th 2007

OMG PLEASE LET IT BE A "WHOEVER TRIES THE HARDEST GETS THE TICKETS" CONTEST AND NOT A "LUCK" CONTEST. THAT'LL GIVE US ALL MORE OF A CHANCE TO WIN.... *THINKS* I. .. MUST.... GO!!!!

Posted by CeciliaJ Jun 14th 2007

Well JKR wouldn't have to learn how to speak so many different lanugages or get a translater, where I live in Scandinavia english is a second lanuage to everyone! I know where and why her priorities lie but I just think it's a bit sad that we don't get a chance aleast. They could have a reading or something with five winners from loads of different countries or something?!

Posted by Witchy_Woman Jun 14th 2007

That's so great. I could go to the one in NO it's not too far away but...would but that Chance would smile upon me.

Posted by Quantummilkshake Jun 14th 2007

The only thing that makes me angry is non "school aged" children have to enter a contest to even have a prayer of a chance of seeing her! Well... I'm in college. Does that make me "school age?" *shrugs* I look young for my age... maybe I can pose? JK HAS FANS OF ALL AGES WHO LOVE HER BOOKS!!!

Remember Cedric. Remember, if the time should come when you have to make a choice between what is right and what is easy, remember what happened to a boy who was good, and kind, and brave, because he strayed across the path of Lord Voldemort. Remember Cedric Diggory.
