Interview with The Wrock Club:

1. Why do you have a wizard rock podcast?

We started the Wrock Club to serve as the "official" podcast of the
Wizrocklopedia. It's original intent was to be a sort of roundtable where wizard rock fans could communicate in a group voice chat online with bands and band members. We did this for several months until the technology we were using was no longer functioning, at which point we sort of became a more typical podcast with interviews and segments although concentrating heavily on the music including live audio from shows.

2. What do you personally get out of hosting a wizard rock podcast?

I got into podcasting by listening to the Tartan Podcast, a music podcast typically featuring only Scottish produced music. I loved the concept of showcasing a niche type of music and thought that it would be fun to do. Therefore, I do it for the music, and to help my favorite bands gain more exposure and keep doing what they're doing!

3. How long have you hosted the podcast?

We've been releasing episodes since October of 2006 and have been co-branded with AlleyCast since July.

4. Does your podcast have a particular style/slant and if so what influences that?

After transitioning to the typical podcast format I've taken my cues from Mark Hunter (of the Tartan Podcast). The show continues to be my motivation, even though it's no longer going on. I also ask for advice from other podcasters, Chris from AlleyCast obviously, and wizard rock band members.

5. Do you plan to continue having episodes even though the Harry Potter series has been completed, and why?

We're a music driven show so the content has less to do with the series and more to do with current and previous music releases, live shows, and the experiences of fans and music makers while at shows and on tour. In the event that there is absolutely no new music we might have to consider other topics, but that doesn't seem to be an issue at the moment.

6. What is your favorite part of being on a wizard rock podcast?

I've wanted to be in broadcasting since high school. I took TV production and journalism courses and hosting a music podcast has really helped me feel like I'm a part of that field. I also love the music so much - it feels incredible to share that enjoyment with other people. I love hearing their opinions on the music and the people involved as well as what they think of my show.

7. What is your least favorite part of being on a wizard rock podcast?

Editing can sometimes take awhile, especially when you're the person in charge of scheduling, hosting, choosing what music to play, etc. It's not terrible, just time consuming. Overall, there isn't some aspect of it that would make me want to stop.

8. What advice do you have for potential future wizard rock podcast hosts?

It's very difficult to come up with something that hasn't been done before. Be creative. Ask other people what they would want to hear. That really determines the success of your show. If you don't give listeners what they want to hear, they won't listen.

9. How do you explain wizard rock/your podcast to people who are new to the genre or to people who (heaven forbid) have never read Harry Potter?

I haven't come across a person who hasn't heard of Harry Potter, but whenever someone asks me what my podcast is about I just say it's a music podcast where the music is about or inspired by the Harry Potter series. I honestly can't remember a situation where anyone has reacted to it with anything other than a, "Wow, really?" and a smile.

10. Is your podcast completely DIY, and do you think that being completely DIY is an integral part of being a wizard rock podcast?

I'm not sure how a podcast could be something other than DIY. I mean, there are obviously the podcasts funded by radio or television stations where it's part of an existing job and your emotional involvement is entirely optional. But when it comes to even a podcast where the hosts don't edit and there are
five to ten people on staff I'd still consider it DIY. The DIY aspect of the wizrock community is amazing. I don't think there really is any other way for wizard rock to exist, unless if it were going the way of parody with the intent to be funny. So, integral? Absolutely.

11. Is there any specific message you would like to share with your fans?

Getting into podcasting has been one of the best things that's happened to me. I love connecting to people and hearing from listeners. Thanks for being awesome.
