Interview with Podcast of Awesome:
1. Why do you have a wizard rock podcast?
I started my wizard rock podcast with one goal in mind: to spread the word on wizard rock, which is why I often play the lesser-known bands and have them on as co-hosts.
2. What do you personally get out of hosting a wizard rock podcast?
Music has always been a big part of my life, I can't imagine life without it. And because of my podcast I have met and spoken with some of the most amazing, and creative people and have come away with so many awesome friends. I didn't start this podcast for selfish reasons, I just wanted to spread the word on wizard rock and it seems to be working! There are new bands popping up every week, and the talent out there is just incredible! I can't get over how awesome Wizard Rock is.
3. How long have you hosted the podcast?
Since March 2007.
4. Does your podcast have a particular style/slant and if so what influences that?
The only style the show really has is wrocking out! Sometimes the episodes have themes, sometimes I have wizard rockers co-host, and sometimes I'm by myself telling stories of how I was singing some wizard rock song at work.
5. Do you plan to continue having episodes even though the Harry Potter series has been completed, and why?
Yes, of course! I love the series; it's been such a big part of my life, even more so since I started the podcast. Harry Potter and music control my life basically. Wizard Rock is here to stay!
6. What is your favorite part of being on a wizard rock podcast?
The co-hosts, definitely! And of course, the musical talent of these bands is just incredible. When you have kids as young as 5 performing concerts and selling CDs of music they've written it's just unbelievable. And the tightness of the wizard rock community is unheard of. I've never met such generous, talented people before and I feel blessed.
7. What is your least favorite part of being on a wizard rock podcast?
Editing! I like editing, don't get me wrong, but it's the most tedious part of the show. I once spent about an hour removing tons of "um" "ahh" "and" from the show just so I could get it down to a decent time!
8. What advice do you have for potential future wizard rock podcast hosts?
Make sure you get permission from the bands. They're pretty cool about it so it's nothing really to worry about, but it's always a good idea to let them know what's going on. It is their music you're promoting after all.
9. How do you explain wizard rock/your podcast to people who are new to the genre or to people who (heaven forbid) have never read Harry Potter?
I've actually had to explain this multiple times, so I sort of have a little speech down by now... "I host a Wizard Rock podcast called the Podcast of Awesome. Wizard Rock is basically a genre of music based off of the Harry Potter series. Like Led Zeppelin singing about Lord of the Rings only bigger! The bands come from all walks of life and all ages, and a lot of families are involved too. It's a really great way to get kids interested into not only music, but reading as well. Some of the most talented people I've ever met were Wizard Rockers."
10. Is your podcast completely DIY, and do you think that being completely DIY is an integral part of being a wizard rock podcast?
Yes, I set up the play list, I do all the editing, I ask the co-hosts if they're interested in co-hosting. The only thing I don't do is make the awesome music that I play on the show!
11. Is there any specific message you would like to share with your fans?
Thank you to each and every one of you for all of your support. I'm having so much fun and I hope you are to, whether you are old or young this is the best time to be in the Harry Potter fandom. Want to start a wizard rock band? Do it. Can't play an instrument? No problem, you an always learn one later. Oh, and remember... If the Wizard Rock is too loud, then you're a Muggle!
