Interview with 142 Staircases:
1. Why do you play wizard rock?
Because it's just about the most fun thing ever! And because the wizard rock fandom is made up of some of the most amazing and loving people on the planet. I love the love.
2. What do you personally get out of being in a wizard rock band?
A chance to learn how to express myself musically in a forum that's encouraging and supportive, and a chance to give something back to this AWESOME fandom.
3. What influences your music/your style?
A ton of other rock bands give me inspiration, but mostly my sound is just however I'm feeling at the moment when writing a song.
4. How long have you been playing?
I've been playing piano on and off since I was little, and bass on and off (mostly off, haha) for a few years. I started wrocking in June 2007, but didn't start 142 Staircases until October. I'm also ½ of Chocolate in the Library, which started earlier.
5. Do you plan to continue having shows and writing songs even though the Harry Potter series has been completed, and why?
I haven't had any shows yet, but I'd love to someday! And there is no way I'll stop writing songs anytime soon. It's just too much fun!
6. What is your favorite part of being in a wizard rock band?
The love! :)
7. What is your least favorite part of being in a wizard rock band?
There is no least favorite. Silly interviewer.
8. What advice do you have for potential future wizard rockers?
Go for it! Even (perhaps especially) if you don't have musical experience. Get yourself a myspace, write up some lyrics, find a catchy tune, and run with it! We'll love it, I promise.
9. How do you explain wizard rock to people who are new to the genre or to people who (heaven forbid) have never read Harry Potter?
I do something dramatic like gasp and fall over, then force my iPod headphones into their ears. Or, in the case of someone who's never read the series, I'll march them directly to the library. Or to my house. Whatever it takes, hehe.
10. Is your band completely DIY, and do you think that being completely DIY is an integral part of being a wizard rock band?
Yep, it's totally DIY, and I do think it's a crucial part of being truly wizard rock. Wrock is one of those genres that's more like a state of mind than a genre, like punk. I mean, getting help from a friend, paying to get your tshirts screen printed, or recording your music at a professional studio is fine if you have the resources; it's having complete creative control over your music and making sure you're in charge of choosing whether to go to the professional screen printer that's important. You make the decisions, you create the music and style, and you make it what you want.
11. Have you ever been approached by a corporate record-label asking to sponsor your band? If so, what was your reaction and if not, what would your reaction be in such a situation?
No, and my reaction would have to be negative. I couldn't possibly accept a corporate sponsorship after that little ditty about having complete creative control.
12. Has your band ever had any copyright-infringement issues, and if so how have you dealt with them?
Nope!
13. Is there any specific message you would like to share with your fans?
You are amazing. I love you. Send me messages, 'cause I love to read them!!!
