Interview with The Remus Lupins:
1. Why do you play wizard rock?
I play Wizard Rock because of the fans. As strange as that may be to say, it is absolutely true. The group of people that listens the music and comes to the show is inspiring to me in a way that no other group has ever been for me. Kids at shows are so full of positive energy; it’s really a very unique experience. I play Wizard Rock because I love being part of something that brings people together and doesn't do it by draining from people's lives, but by enriching it and promoting one of my favorite things ever - reading.
2. What do you personally get out of being in a wizard rock band?
The commercial endorsements are pretty good. The best part of it is getting to meet new people, and see parts of the country I never would have otherwise. I love having an outlet to make fun music too.
3. What influences your music/your style?
The music I listen to, I would expect. I usually don’t go into a song saying, "Here’s what I want to do," it just sort of comes out. That is informed by the bands I listen to and admire though. Here are some people I've been listening to lately : The Beatles, Simon Dawes, Of Montreal, Death Cab, Rilo Kiley, We Are Scientists, Voxtrot, The Shins,Spoon, The Decemberists, Elliott Smith, Metric, the Good Cheer, and of course a healthy dose of Cascada.
4. How long have you been playing?
I sang for a band in high school, and it was horrible. I started playing guitar about 4 years ago. I still think I'm horrible at both, but its fun to play.
5. Do you plan to continue having shows and writing songs even though the Harry Potter series has been completed, and why?
I think that there are a lot of songs to write. A good number of the songs on my records have been forward-looking, and I don’t think that has to end. That spirit of revolution still exists within the pages of those books, and just because there is an end point to it now doesn’t mean that the emotions and stories therein are any less relevant.
6. What is your favorite part of being in a wizard rock band?
Again, the corporate sponsorships. I think that the best part is being able to do what I love – play music - and be in such a great supportive environment all the time. And the free apple juice that people bring to shows.
7. What is your least favorite part of being in a wizard rock band?
I don’t really have a part I don’t like. One thing that got pretty bad was people wanting to talk about Snape on the summer tour. That got rough. It’s such a nuanced discussion, and having had it with no less than 800 fans, by the time July 21 came around, I couldn’t even hear the name Snape without collapsing into a ball and crying. Though I suppose that’s where many of us were at that point.
8. What advice do you have for potential future wizard rockers?
Play. Write. Record. Perform. Rinse and Repeat. My advice would be to do it, and not care what people who don’t get it say. Just play and have a good time with it!!
9. How do you explain wizard rock to people who are new to the genre or to people who (heaven forbid) have never read Harry Potter?
"What is Wizard Rock?" "Its the most awesome thing ever. Come to a show. You'll understand." Usually that works.
10. Is your band completely DIY, and do you think that being completely DIY is an integral part of being a wizard rock band?
I'm not really sure what DIY means in an age when a kid with a laptop computer can produce music of the same quality as people in a top notch recording studio. DIY is a state of mind more than a practice I think. In terms of that - yes, I think the Remus Lupins are all about doing as much as we can by ourselves. We have some really amazing friends, and we haven’t had to reach outside our circle of close friends for anything yet. I think that anyone can do this - just put your mind to it.
11. Have you ever been approached by a corporate record-label asking to sponsor your band? If so, what was your reaction and if not, what would your reaction be in such a situation?
We have been approached. We said "No, thank you!" It was pretty empowering. Dumbledore's Army forever.
12. Has your band ever had any copyright-infringement issues, and if so how have you dealt with them?
Nah, I think Warner Bros knows that Jo loves us. I mean...everyone knows that right? JK Rowling loves Wizard Rock. I have no idea. Maybe she does. I would think she would. Its pretty damn cool. In reality, we are getting kids excited about reading and about the messages of the books - Love, Friendship, Loyalty...who would want to shut something like that down?
13. Is there any specific message you would like to share with your fans?
Fight Evil, Read Books. Oh. And Keep Each Other Safe. Keep Faith.
