‘Harry Potter’ actress Julie Walters to take part in fundraising performance this Sunday

According to an article in the Daily Mail, stage and film actress Julie Walters – who portrayed Molly Weasley in the Harry Potter series – will co-star with Patrick Stewart for a special fundraising performance of Agatha Christie’s “The Mousetrap” this Sunday, November 18, at the St. Martin’s Theatre. St. Martin’s Theatre is celebrating it’s Diamond Anniversary (60th year) of Agatha Christie’s “The Mousetrap”, which is the longest running show of any kind with over 24,000 performances. It is quite simply a great piece of theatrical history because of what it is, a whodunit written by the greatest crime writer of all time. Christie’s grandson Mathew Prichard, who was given the rights to “The Mousetrap” for his ninth birthday, will join producer Stephen Waley-Cohen in unveiling a memorial to Dame Agatha at St Martin’s Cross. It takes the form of a giant book containing her portrait. Read More »

Edinburgh University hits fundraising goal for Rowling MS clinic

Back in August of 2010, we reported that Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling had donated £10 million to Edinburgh University to help open a research clinic for Multiple Sclerosis (MS), the disease that took the life of her mother Anne at the age of 45, and was slated to be named the Anne Rowling Regenerative Neurology Clinic in her honor. Today, it was announced that the fundraising campaign by the university has reached its goal of £350 million and the research clinic is set to open next year. The announcement marks the end of a six-year fundraising drive to finance research, maintaining the buildings and providing financial aid for students. According to an article in Scotland’s STV News, the University director of development and alumni engagement had this to say: “What is significant, and what the university is most proud of, is that the campaign has funded projects that have the potential to change people’s lives for the better. Fundraising has become an integral part of the university and we will continue to work with supporters to ensure that all areas of the university can flourish.” In addition to the Anne Rowling Regenerative Neurology Clinic, projects receiving support include The ... Staffer Eric Scull celebrates 10 years with MuggleNet!

Today, MuggleNet staffer and MuggleCast co-host Eric Scull (pictured above with his father… not really…) celebrates 10 years with the site. Eric started way back on a Fall day in 2002, when Goblet of Fire was still fresh off the presses. He has a been a pillar of the Potter fan community, having dedicated roughly half his life to MuggleNet, running the site’s Caption Contest, participating in numerous events, and attending conventions all over the world. From London to Sydney to Las Vegas to New York, Eric has represented the site in literally all parts of the globe. Here’s a small sample of Eric’s work, from the Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Celebration. Many know him for his colorful, opinionated, and often times spiel-like contributions (hence the Twitter name @spielerman) on our podcast MuggleCast, which he has helped co-host since Episode 3 — that was over 7 years ago. Having helmed the infamous Caption Contest for the better part of a decade, we felt it only appropriate to allow you all the chance to caption this photo of Eric from LeakyCon 2012! From all of us here at MuggleNet, congrats on 10 years with the site! Read More »

Waterfall seen in ‘Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire’ to undergo repairs

Recognize this waterfall? That’s because it appears in the Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire film while Harry battles the Hungarian Horntail during the first task of the Triwizard Tournament. The Steall Falls, near Fort Williams in the UK, is so popular with walkers that it now needs repairs to its surface due to erosion. On average, 40,000 people a year climb the 393 ft. path up the falls. According to an article on deadline, the repair funds come from The John Muir Trust as well as donations from the public, which shows just how important the trail is to people. Footpath officer of the trust, Chris Goodman, said, “The path is justifiably popular – the trail is suitable for young families on a day out and elderly people who may find it too difficult to reach high summit.” Repairs will involve a helicopter because it will be the easiest way to drop necessary materials down on the path. This need and methods used for repair will mean closure for the path and road through Glen Nevis when work needs to be completed on the aerial section. Goodman also stated, “The trail retains that feel of wildness that people ... Read More »

Scientists offer “perfect” concealment in latest attempt at recreating Harry’s invisibility cloak

A true cloak of invisibility, as seen in the Harry Potter series, may soon come to fruition as scientists discover ways to “bend” light around objects. The team of electrical engineers from Duke University, who created the first ‘cloaking’ device in 2006, have been working on ways to iron out the problems of the earlier cloak (check out our previous article right here). Previous distortions meant that when look at the device people were aware of its presence, much the same way you are aware of the glass when looking out of a window. Now the team believe they have created ‘true’ invisibility by using materials that are capable of bending electromagnetic waves, such as light, around the object. This means that when looking at the current version of the cloak, a “diamond-shaped fibreglass and copper sheet’” people will only be able to see the light behind the concealed object, effectively making it invisible. The Duke University scientists are now researching ways in which they can apply these principles to a three dimensional device. What do you think of this new research? What other magical Potter object would you like to be made a reality? Read More »

Caution: Don’t pick a fight with Robbie Coltrane

Although he may be smaller in stature than his Harry Potter persona, Rubeus Hagrid, Robbie Coltrane is by no means short on personality. In a recent interview with The Guardian, Coltrane spoke quite candidly regarding his feelings towards his secondary school experience, his journey leading up to realizing he wanted to be an actor, and the complete image overhaul he underwent during and post-Potter. He also chatted about his recent project playing Mr. Jaggers in a film adaptation of the classic Charles Dickens novel Great Expectations, which is under the direction of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire director Mike Newell. While reminiscing upon his days at secondary school, Coltrane makes it very clear that he was not to be messed with, saying “I didn’t accept the hierarchy, basically” and “It’s essentially survival of the fittest and I was one of the fittest, so I have no complaints.” He later addressed how he finds his new exemplar position to his younger Potter fans, saying “Kids come up to you and they go: ‘Would you like to sign my book?’ with those big doe-eyes. And it’s a serious responsibility.” This film version of Great Expectations was adapted by David Nicholls ... Read More »
