Chester (His Band) questions

Hi Ed, first of all thank you to take time to answer to our Questions... its such a honor for all of us at Ed online. Well, we would like to know, when exactly you found out that you had an awesome voice?

Well, I'm very flattered. I just like to sing really. I've never "discovered" that i have an amazing singing voice, because i don't. it's ok.

Who exactly is your inspiration?

As Richard said, we all have very diverse tastes, but I’ll speak for myself here. this is the opportunity to spread the word about legends like Jeff Buckley. he's my main influence, absolutely brilliant. in terms of vocal style people like Billie Holiday interest me - beautiful voices, but with a real experience behind them. I’d love to write lyrics like Leonard Cohen, John Lennon or Arthur lee.

Now, a question that I asked to Richard ...If you could make the first part of a famous band…which one would you choose?

I'm not sure what that means. If you mean, what band would I most like to have been a part of... hmm. the bonzo dog band. they're certainly a major influence on chester, though I have to tread carefully when speaking on behalf of all of us.

What will be the next step of Chester?

To record our album. we all have exams pretty soon which don't leave much time for anything else.

Did Chester ever sing in a Church, party, school, wedding or even Xmas events yet?

Not really. So far we've only had a few quiet invitation-only events, but our time will come...

Why the name "Chester" ?

The name came before I joined the band. I believe it was the invention of our keys player Nick, in one of his many contributions to the creative output of chester. chester was originally a person, a mysterious kind of entity, I think. Full name chester gnresh (we dropped the surname for obvious reasons)

What do your songs talk about?

Well, I mean, the one you've heard, Maurice Chestnut's lament, I didn’t write it but I believe it has to do with a troubled father-son relationship. I’d hate to be wrong though. as for my lyrics, they're usually based on emotions I’m going through at the time... the best way to explain what they say is just to listen to the songs, because when I wrote them I did so as a way of expressing what i felt.

What will your songs never talk about?

The sky's the limit. No idea, I don't think we have that kind of manifesto. there's some feeling that we should steer clear of straightforward love songs because they're so hard to do in an original way.

If you could make a cover of 3 songs with Chester...which one would you choose?

Well, we do quite often cover songs at practices. We do a pretty good House of the Rising Sun. It varies, though. Songs I’d currently like to cover include Jewel Box by Jeff Buckley, 20th Century Boy by T.Rex, Suffragette City by David Bowie - the list is nigh on endless. Also this great French song called Chatenay-Malabry by Vincent Delerm. I believe you're french-canadian, right? well have a listen to this guy if you can. really clever stuff.

If Chester could have another member which one would you choose between: Britney Spears, Ozzy Osborne, Sir Elton John, Amy Lee from Evanescence or Courtney Love?

Thats an interesting selection. My gut instinct is Ozzy, because.... You know. Ozzy. But then Britney might help us corner a market we haven't really paid much attention to.

How do you imagine the first music video of Chester?

Low budget and nonsensical. Realistically.

Ed Questions

What is your favorite film?

It's probably The Princess Bride. what a film. I know it's not the best ever made, but it's still my favorite.

What is the last film you saw in Cinema and in Video/DVD?

In the cinema: Shaun of the Dead. On video: it may have been scarface. i don't really remember.

What are you favorite bands?

Chester! I dunno. I feel I’ve covered that. At the moment I like... The Libertines, Outkast, and Radiohead.

Your favorite Songs?

Impossible. Seriously, I can't do that question justice.

Do you play sports? Which one is your fave?

Not really. I'm pathetic, athletically

What are your favorite Countries?

err. I quite like the one I live in. Sad to say I’ve never been to Canada, but I love France.

What was your worse day, and why?

I try to forget them.

What was your favorite day and why?

The day I found out I had been cast in Harry Potter, I was on holiday in Mauritius, it was idyllic. Often the best days are ones like we're getting in England at the moment when the sun's shining, the leaves are out and it's all just really good.

What was the most embarrassing moment of your life?

I don't get embarrassed too easily... well, not true. there was a moment a few weeks ago which came close, but I’m definitely not telling you.

Who is your favorite Actor?

I really admire Alec Guinness, James Stewart... I like an awful lot of actors, but those are two golden oldies.

Describe yourself?

I'm 5'11" and I have dark hair.

What is your biggest fear?

I don't like being alone in a room with an open door.

What do you think about Reality Shows like The Simple life or Pop Idol?

Poor.

What is the stupidest thing you've done in your life?

So much to choose from.

Harry Potter questions

How can you describe you experience?

Er... once in a lifetime? It really was amazing, I still haven't quite come to terms with it. Though I should say it was quite often dull as hell, because I was so rarely on set.

When and how did you learn that you got the part?

I've said this already, but it was on holiday, in Mauritius. In a swimming pool.

How was your first day on set?

Extraordinarily scary. I had lines sandwiched in between Kenneth Branagh and Alan Rickman. but everyone wants to put you at your ease and you very quickly befriend the other newcomers.

Describe to us your auditions?

I had three. Contrary to what's on your site, that isn't especially few. One was with a casting bod in London, the second with the director, producer and casting director at Leavesden Studios. At which I had my leg in a plaster cast, which must have made an impression I suppose. The third was at Shepperton Studios and it was properly filmed with lights and me moving around, as opposed to sitting with a plaster leg. There was quite a lot of improvised banter with the director, in character. if anything that was what did it for me because I’d worked on the character quite a bit by rereading the book. I should add that the wait after each audition was unbearable.

In the Chamber of Secrets, you were almost in all the Class scenes. How did it feel to be working with such great actors as Maggie Smith, Alan Rickman, etc?

Really special. They were all wonderful to observe, but Ken Branagh and Miriam Margolyes stand out as particularly entertaining.

Did you have the chance to talk to some of the actors on set, like Matthew Lewis, Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint or others?

Absolutely. Matt Lewis in particular, though I haven’t seen him since the film came out. Dan and Rupert were on very different schedules but while I was around them it was good fun.

Tell us how it was to attend the London Premiere?

It was Awesome, indeed. The most unbelievable night. Fortunately I had my parents and a friend with me to bring me back down to earth. I remember being in the "red carpet" section and some journalist knew who I was. I couldn't believe it - my answers to the questions he asked were about as coherent as you'd expect. Also, I met J.K. Rowling that night which was a dream. Though I forgot to ask her any of the questions I'd planned.

Have you read all of the books?

Yes. all of them. I'm an addict.

Are you a big fan of Harry Potter? I mean, watch all the films again and again, check some Harry Potter Websites, try to know the latest news on the films, etc?

A little bit. It's a slightly secret passion. I do try to keep abreast of news regarding the films. but I get told it all by friends anyway.

Since you did the second HP film, many people surely asked you some questions, which one is the most often asked?

"How much did you get paid?"

What was your favorite moment on set?

When at the end of day one Ken Branagh said as he walked past, "Good work today, young man." YESSSS.

Who is your fave Harry Potter Character?

Definitely not Justin. I love a lot of them: Hagrid, Dumbledore, Lupin in particular.

We know that Justin Flinch Fletcher takes a break in the third and fourth film, but we also know that he has a big role in the fifth book...he is in the D.A. Do you look forward to working on the fifth film?

Could I just set this straight... As far as I know I will not be in any further HP films. As for the fifth one, by the time they have whittled an 800-page book into a 100-page screenplay I am sure Justin will be nowhere in sight. Sorry.

How long took the filming of Harry Potter?

My first day of filming was, I think, late November, and my last was mid-July the next year. There was about a month more after that, but of course just as important are the bits before where they write and plan it, and the bits after where they edit it.

How do you react when you see that so many people like Harry Potter…and some people (the craziest ones) make a website on you?

I know why so many people like Harry Potter... I’m one of them. I am, however, completely baffled by the website. I just don't understand how anyone would go to that effort based on so little screen time. but I’m honoured.
