The Hook-Ups of Harry PotterAs the inevitable due date of the sixth HP book rolls around, we all want to know what is going to happen to our favorite characters, especially as they come of age. With the arrival of Book Six, our favorite trio will be sixteen years old. For those of you who have already lived through the sixteenth year, it is one of confusion, lust, and humility. The one characteristic of being sixteen that I would like to focus on in this week’s article is love/lust: who will hook up with whom in HP? This is a sort of continuation of last week’s article, with a specific angle of love. Let us look at the trio of Harry, Hermione, and Ron firstly. Harry is the somewhat humble hero, Hermione is the loyal bookworm, and Ron is the sarcastic sidekick. We want all three of them to end up happy because they mean so much to us and they all deserve it! I am still unsure if any of the trio will end up together in the end, but I can see a Hermione/Ron match as the most likely. They love to hate each other, yet have a very large amount of respect for one another and are completely loyal. They also have many awkward moments; Ron is insanely jealous of Viktor Krum now that Hermione has shown the slightest hint of interest. They argue constantly, but yet never seem mad at each other. They both have a strong love and sense of loyalty to Harry, and that is what has kept them together. Apparently those who are close to the series and films seem to playing on this relationship. At then end of the film version of The Chamber of Secrets, Ron and Hermione share an awkward “embrace” that ends up putting them closer than they think they should be. As the previews show, a scene in the film version of The Prisoner of Azkaban shows Hermione clutching Ron’s hand, realizing what she did, then pulling away. There is a huge tension among these two that Harry and Hermione do not have. So what about Harry and Hermione then? Although they are great friends in the largest sense, I do not see them romantically linked. They have almost too much in common for it to be a good match. They are so comfortable with each other that they could not think of a relationship any different from the one they already have. I am satisfied with this because every person needs to have a friendship with someone from the opposite sex the way that Harry and Hermione do. They do not mind talking to each other about deep desires or wishes and dreams, but we have yet to see Harry think of Hermione in any sort of romantic way. I just do not think this one will happen. So who will Harry end up with? Good question. At this point, if he will end up with someone in the sixth or seventh year, my money is on Ginny or Luna. There is a myth that tells of guys ending up with their best friend’s younger sister. It actually happens a lot! We know that Ginny fancied Harry at one point, and I think that there is still potential for her liking him in that way again. Also, in Book Five, we see Harry start to notice Ginny more and more. Ginny is the awkward Weasley, but with more emphasis put on her at the end of Order of the Phoenix, we should keep an eye on her. As for Luna and Harry, I also think that there is potential. Although I believe that Luna is smitten with Ron, she has more in common with Harry. At the end of the last book, Harry is perplexed by Luna; she always surprises him. We know that she is extremely brave and loyal, particularly based on what she has to put up with her peers. I think that Harry and Luna would be a good next romance for Harry, but I think it will be short-lived (she is just a little too weird!). As I mentioned in the last edition, Cho and Harry are over. I believe that they will remain friends, but Cho is too much of the stereotypical popular girl to win Harry over. After the last book, Harry is realizing more the difference between lust and love, although many people do not realize this until well later in life (particularly males, hehehe). One thing is certain for the next book: our favorite characters are coming of age and emotions are going to get in the way of a lot of relationships, good or bad. With as much as Malfoy pretends to hate Hermione, I think that deep down he really likes her. She is the ultimate unattainable female in his world: the best friend of his nemesis. I think that the closer Ron and Hermione get, the more jealous and horrible Malfoy will become. I can see the beginnings of a stand-off among the three of them will someone getting hurt of killed. Let’s look at how likely some other relationships may go: Neville/Ginny. If Ginny does not end up with Harry, she might go for Neville. They were dates to the Yule Ball, and they seem to spend a lot of time together as the “forgotten” kids in the DA. They both have incredible talent, but are not really popular enough for others to recognize it. They get along great, and have a great respect for one another. Draco/Hermione. This would an interesting one. As stated above, I think that Malfoy is absolutely in love with Hermione, but his feelings are definitely not reciprocated. There is very little chance, in my opinion, of this relationship having any substance. Ron/Luna. Aww, this would be so sweet. Putting together the two most funny characters in the series would be really cute, but their chemistry is not good. Luna thinks Ron is funny, Ron thinks Luna is funny, too, but in a crazy psychopath way. I do not think this will happen, or work out even if it does happen. Do you have any hunches on who will end with whom? Any comments you would like me to read regarding any of the Quibbler articles? Please use the feedback form and let me know! I love to read your ideas and comments, and it gives me inspiration to keep writing as well. Never hesitate to write! I will probably keep coming back to this subject because there are so many different layers of personality that all the characters have, so keep reading, keep writing, and I will do the same! Next week’s article will focus more on the third movie than on any of the books. What exactly was Lupin talking about when he mentions Lily Potter? We will explore the life, love, and death of Lily Potter. Until next week…. 1/23/05
