Freddie Stroma

Freddie Stroma

Freddie Stroma is actually a stage name for Frederic Wilhelm Sjostrom, who was born in London on January 8, 1987, to a Swedish father and German mother. Freddie attended Radley College, a boys only boarding school an hour outside of Ascot, where he grew up. He has an older sister and a younger brother. Freddie studied at University College of London and graduated in 2009 with a 2.1 BSc in Neuroscience. He did take a short break for filming but decided to return, stating that “would have been a shame to just throw it away.”

Around the age of 16, Freddie was accepted into the highly prestigious National Youth Theater (like many of the younger Potter cast). That has since led to prominent roles in cinema, including of course, Harry Potter. Freddie is also interested in singing and guitar, although he has never been trained in either.

"Potter" Career

"Potter" Career

Before being cast in the Potter films, Freddie (like so many others) was a fan of the novels – but had only read the first two, despite seeing all the films up until that point.

I read the first two books at a young age and had seen all the films. I liked all of them but if I had to pick one it would be Order of the Phoenix. I think there were some great performances, it was well shot and I like David Yates work, which made me very anxious and excited about working with him.

Freddie landed his role as Gryffindor Cormac McLaggen in quite a normal way: by auditioning!

I auditioned with the casting director and the tape was sent to the director David Yates. About three weeks later, I was told I had a callback at the studio. I went for the read with David and then once the scene was over, he told me in the room that he wanted me to do it. I was completely shocked, also because I didn’t know what I was going to do about the final year of me degree. Harry Potter was a much bigger project than my previous jobs. So it was a big step in the right direction. Personally it didn’t affect me too much. Some attention on the internet was about the most of it.

Due to not being cast until the sixth film, Freddie didn’t have the long days and hours of the principal cast. He did, however, still lament leaving when he was wrapped.

It was definitely very sad leaving but at the same time it was nice to see now how the actors go on and do different things. It’s nice to see people moving on as well and being allowed to show off their other talents as well. I was sad when I watched the final one. I was like, “Oh, so this is over. It’s an end of an era.” I can’t think of any other scenario where you have such a big franchise. I mean, you’ve got eight films that have been going for over a decade. It’s just so strange to see it end, I guess.

Some of his favorite memories from set:

One day we were filming and a bunch of bludgers were thrown at me, I had to just hit them away…I ended up hitting a light stand, a camera man, a costume man and managed to send one down a tube that was blasting air at me at the time. The filming was a lot of fun.

The scene I love the most is when I am slowly licking my fingers and looking at Hermione,” says the 22-year-old Stroma, who attempts to woo Emma Watson’s character Hermione Granger in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. “I’ve not done that to a girl that I’ve fancied. It’s just so disgusting!

  • Before getting into acting, he wanted to be a ninja!
  • He chose to study Neuroscience because “Neuroscience was absolutely perfect for me. To study the mind, brain, nervous system with a scientific approach is fun. It’s philosophical, psychological and biological, three areas I find fascinating.”
  • He is a massive fan of candy, stating that he “often” has candy with him, and loves Haribo or milk and cookies.
  • If he couldn’t be an actor, he would choose to be a singer because “I feel like being a neuroscientist would possibly be more fulfilling but the basic joy of singing and music is a very powerful thing.”
  • He finds acting inspiration from some of the greats: Marlon Brando, De Niro, Al Pacino, Dustin Hoffman, and Daniel Day Lewis.
