Sir John Hurt

Sir John Hurt was born on January 22, 1940, in Shirebrook, Derbyshire, England. The third and youngest child of an actress and a clergyman, John was interested in acting from a young age. However, his parents discouraged this ambition, and he attended art school. In 1962, he made his stage debut as a member of the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. He has since been in numerous television, film, and stage productions, including animated projects and narration for documentaries. Sir John Hurt’s career has spanned more than five decades, and in 2015 he was awarded the Knight Bachelor of the Order of the British Empire for his services to drama.

Originally cast for Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, he reprised the role in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (the scenes he appeared in were eventually cut) and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Parts 1 and 2.
