Scholastic's financial advisor, William Bird, said in a report that he believed the sixth Harry Potter book would come out "in the summer of 2005 at the earliest but more likely in the summer of 2006."

Copy Richard Harris? Never!
Asked whether he was conscious that he was taking over a much-loved character, Michael Gambon told The Observer:

"Do a sort of Richard Harris impersonation, you mean? It never crossed my mind. If you were playing Lear, you wouldn't copy the last person to do it."

Thanks, James!

MuggleNet t-shirts: second run
The second printing of MuggleNet T-Shirts is set to begin next week, and to avoid delays such as those last time, we will not be selling any shirts until they've arrived and are ready to be sent out. As we've explained, last time it was necessary to take shirt orders first because we could not estimate the number of shirts to order.

However, we're unsure how many people would still like to order a shirt. For this printing, it appears we will only be able to take orders from the U.S. and Canada (by mail or online by credit card, in USD ONLY by mail) and from the U.K. However, if you do live in another country, please follow the directions below and also indicate your country and postal code so that we can estimate a shipping cost (please note that international shipping can become very expensive).

If you would like to order a shirt, we are only asking that you tell us of your plans now (you do not need to pay at this time or include your mailing address). Please go to our feedback form and select "T-Shirt Request" from the drop-down menu as the subject of your message. Please include your name, the sizes you would like to order in a few weeks, and your postal code. We will use these notes to calculate the size of our printing next week. Please note that this should be used for serious inquiries only.

We are awaiting permission to use a fan-submitted photo as a demonstration of what the shirts look like. If you have a photo of yourself in a shirt, please feel free to submit it.

Casting letter for Parvati and Padma Patil
Vicky sent in the letter she received after sending photos to Shaheen Baig, the casting director for Parvati and Padma, of herself and her twin sister Nicole. Unfortunately, they didn't get asked to audition as they live in America, but Vicky had this to say about the letter:

This may not seem like such a big story to anyone, but to me it was! I was just another girl wanting to be an actress, especially in the Harry Potter movie. I wasn't expecting anything at all sent back to me. When my mom gave me this letter yesterday I was shocked! I can't believe that Shaheen would give up her free time to write a letter saying I didn't get the part, and also to say that she loved my letters & wished me luck. It just made me happy. So now I'm sending a letter back to say thank you. If I get a response I'll tell you all.

Report: HarryPotter.com's new look
TLC was able to get a look at the new layout for the Official Site that's being unveiled next month. Here's what they had to say about it:

The Marauder's Map, which on the site is detailed and patterned as if it came out of a Tolkien anthology, serves, naturally, as the navigational tool for the entire site. It folds out like an accordion, pops up like a pop-up book, leading around a very detailed map of Hogwarts (and the different elements of the site). This may not be exactly how the map looks in the movie, as different elements are needed for a web site, but it's based on it. The different areas of the site are different rooms in Diagon Alley/Hogwarts: a spooky piece of background art of each empty room is the backdrop on each section.

One of the pages leads you to the interior of the Leaky Cauldron and what looks like the table where Harry and the Weasleys eat the night before returning to Hogwarts. The lantern-lit area isn't complete yet - I was told there'd be spooky and magical happenings on the walls before the page goes live. (This was my favorite page, of course!)

In the Divination classroom, a crystal ball sits smack in the center of the page and holds the promise of portents when the page goes live. Also in that picture (and in the movie) is a large, almost toppling, pyramid of teacups. At leat 10 feet high.

On the Care of Magical Creatures Page is an added game involving learning how to open the "Monster Book of Monsters," which is very furry and has gums and teeth for a clasp. The book will act as it does in the book, when you try to open it. On each of these pages is a new set of menu options; at least six per section.

On the main page is a very striking shot of the Trio (looking much older than they should be allowed to have grown by now, in this editor's opinion!) Behind them is a backdrop of swirling, menacing dementors.

Everything has a glowing, soft-but-spooky, haunted-house feel to it. The logo, like in the trailers, no longer has the blue tint; it's cold silver. Everything feels older and darker, as it should.

Cho update
Natasha Neeson, the Cho-hopeful featured in the story below, wrote in the comments:
Hi, just thought you'd like to know, the paper made a mistake. It was actually the final 12.
And they've chosen Cho already. I got a lot of the remaining girls' mobile numbers. Last week, they started rejecting people. I didn't get the part because I look too old on screen as many of you have said. For press reasons I don't know who got the part of Cho, but I guess that they have picked her, as all the other girls rang me up with the news.
Exciting stuff, eh?
This has been confirmed by James, who attends the same drama school as Natasha.

Update: Natasha has told us what the second and third stages of the auditions were like and also scanned in the casting letter she received from Warner Brothers.

Genuine PoA film cell on eBay?
An authentic Prisoner of Azkaban film cell is up for sale on eBay, and the plaque that it comes with features two (small) PoA pictures that I don't believe we've seen before. One is Emma Thompson with Trelawney's huge specs, and the other is Harry and Hermione riding a strange-looking Buckbeak. Although, we can't say for sure whether these are official or not.

Thanks to Charlotte for bringing this to our attention.

UPDATE: Thanks to everyone who pointed out that this is a fake. You can view the enlarged film cell here, which clearly shows a picture of "Emma Chambers," not Emma Thompson as Trelawney. (Additional thanks to Emma Watson News).

Has Cho been picked?
NiteStar wrote in with this information:

Hey, not sure if I saw right or not but I was at work in the kitchen and the TV was on showing CNN and the caption said "Fairy Tale Ending." It looked like a restaurant called PF Chang and there was a girl - with very 'Cho' features dressed in what looked like a school uniform...not sure but she just might be Cho. Couldn't really tell you the whole story because people were making too much noise, but check into it. Note - she looked like she was working as a waitress. Not sure, but just wanted to give you guys a heads up!

Update: A MuggleNet reader e-mailed in to say that this story was about a waitress who received a car for a tip, so no Cho has been picked as of yet.

Bozhinov: It's important they chose a Bulgarian to play Krum
Victor Bozhinov, who headed up the panel of judges for the Sofia auditions for Viktor Krum, has expressed his delight that producers in London have picked a native Bulgarian for the part. He also added that candidates for the part of Viktor Krum from all over the world were able to send their pictures and taped performances to London, so until the last minute it was not certain whether a Bulgarian would get the role.

Until the last moment, British casting directors hesitated whether the part should go to the London-living teenager, or to one of two other Krum wannabes. They were among the 46 candidates whose taped appearances were sent to London by the Bulgarian panel of judges.

He also reiterated the fact that Warner Brothers has not released any names or pictures regarding the casting of Krum.

Viktor Krum has been chosen
Novinite.com is reporting that a Bulgarian boy that is currently living in London was chosen to play the part of Viktor Krum in GoF.

Until the last moment, British casting directors hesitated whether the part should go to the London-living teenager, or to one of two other Krum wannabes. They were among the 46 candidates whose taped appearances were sent to London by a Bulgarian jury, led by producer Victor Bozhinov, who had this to say:

It was a tough choice for people in London, because they were impressed by many of the Bulgarian candidates.

Warner Brothers has not given any official confirmation on this, nor have released any names or pictures: as soon as we get word we'll let you all know.

Scarier new Azkaban trailer on its way
CBBC Newsround is reporting that a new, scarier Prisoner of Azkaban trailer is due out any time soon, but an exact date is still unknown.

The new trailer, with a run time of 1:45, has been given a 'PG' rating by the British Board of Film Classification in contrast to the 'U' (Universal) rating the first trailer was given. This means that while it should still be suitable for all audiences, some scenes may be too scary for younger children.

Guillermo del Toro has seen PoA
In an interview with Latino Review, 'Hellboy' director Guillermo del Toro revealed that he was able to see PoA in London, and has nothing but praise for it:

How was it? And is it darker from the other the two films?

Guillermo del Toro: It's absolutely fantastic. It's not only a beautiful Harry Potter film, it's an absolutely delight of a film period. Its just...Alfonso's imagination, for anyone who saw Little Princess, it's extremely rich and
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban is incredibly detailed, incredibly full of spectacle and intelligence. I mean I was blown away by it, I think it's going to be a huge success. I saw it in London and it's simply fantastic.

Would you have taken a project like Harry Potter?

Guillermo del Toro: They actually offered me
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban before Alfonso. Which is actually very good in terms of realizing the way Latino filmmakers are regarded. I was very sincere with what I said before. I love the Harry Potter universe, I love the books but I felt more passion towards doing HELLBOY. It was a project that I had been involved so long and if I didn't do it now, I could never get to do it. I'm extremely happy that Alfonso took it and he did a fantastic productive job. I think it's one the best children's movies I have ever seen in my life.

Thanks to Coming Soon.

Snape in a dress? "Hilarious, no other way to describe it"
Matthew Lewis was on hand to answer a couple questions about the new movie that we were itching to ask:

Can you tell us what it was like to film the Boggart scene in PoA?
It was really cool, not only the bit with Alan Rickman but the rest of the scene is very funny too.

How different is Michael Gambon's portrayal of Dumbledore compared to the great Richard Harris?
Richard Harris was perfect for Dumbledore, there is no denying that. Michael Gambon from what I have seen has done a great job in keeping the magic of Dumbledore alive.

Was the atmosphere on the PoA set any different from the first two movies?
It wasn't different from the second but it was from the first. After the first film everybody knew each other and it was easier, you could relax more, which allowed you to do your job better. But all three were excellent to work on.

I've got to ask - how was it seeing Alan Rickman in the dress with the handbag?
Hilarious, no other way to describe it. He was really great with it too, very funny. He was still really intimidating, though.

Further questions will soon be posted that have been answered by Devon Murray and James and Oliver Phelps. Stay tuned! Remember, Matthew Lewis will be signing in person at the Celebrity Autograph Expo in March.

Rain drives HP crew from Scotland
Sunday Mail is reporting that Scotland will be relegated to a supporting role in the next Harry Potter movie because it rains too much. IGN interviews Robbie Coltrane
In addition to the previous interview with IGN, Robbie Coltrane followed up with a few more comments about PoA:

Q: Can you talk about the difference between working with [Azkaban Director Alfonso Cuaron] vs. working with Chris Columbus? What does he bring to Harry Potter?
He's got a different style of shooting. I think, I mean, you'd have to ask him. I know he was very keen to get out of the studio. [Harry Potter] was very studio-bound. That's the trouble with anything which essentially has a lot of bits that are physically impossible. You're left, stuck, in the studio. And that's a shame. You're making a movie. You don't want it to stay put, you want it to be a movie – to move. And I think he's been very keen to do that.

Q: How about his directing style vs. Chris? Is he more hands on? Does he let you do your thing?
You know Chris is always very hands-on ... one of the many things I liked about Chris was that he wasn't one of those directors who sits by the monitor and goes, "Again! No! Again!" Between takes he runs to the set and tells everyone what was wrong, so everyone knows what was wrong. So then you're trying to get it right next time, because you felt that it was an obvious thing that something that the lower director missed. (Everyone laughs.) No names! So yeah, he is very hands-on, and he's very good with the kids, too. I mean they're at a kind of strange and very odd age, 12, 13. So they kind of don't know whether to play with the train set or look at the nudie mags. And so he gets that because he know exactly how protected they need to be, but he also knows that they are semi-adults.

Chris Rankin tells all
HPANA has posted a wonderful - and lengthy - interview with Chris Rankin, or, Percy Weasley. I found one part in particular quite worthy of singling out:

What do you hope fans of the books get from the movies?
I reckon most of them find it quite bizarre, the true fans of the books I find don't necessarily like the movies. Every fan has a very different image of how they imagined Hogwarts and how they imagined the charactors to be. I think they get overprotective of their own imagery, but sometimes in the films there are bits - certainly in the third one - where you can read more into characters than what's in the book, because I think JK Rowling had a bit more to do with the script this time. With the direction Alfonso has taken it, he's sort of taken a huge left-hand turn at the traffic lights and gone off on a much different way. I think it's going to bring a lot more of the book out.

Gambon talks about his current and future roles
The Telegraph interviewed Sir Michael Gambon:

It's no surprise, then, that the great Gambon has been invited to play Hamm, the central figure in arguably the darkest of all [Samuel] Beckett's works, Endgame, which begins previews at the Albery Theatre on February 25. It's equally unsurprising, though, that "he took a lot of persuading", according to his director, Matthew Warchus.

He had this to say on his role as Professor Dumbledore:

"It's good fun. I enjoy playing that professor with a beard, and the people are very obliging. They'll shift their schedules to accommodate you."

Two HP birthdays to celebrate today
We'd like to wish a very happy 17th birthday to MuggleNet's big cheese Emerson Spartz, who is celebrating his golden birthday today. At the risk of him being annoyed by me sucking up, I would just like to say that Emerson is a really great guy and I feel privileged to know him.

Also celebrating their day of birth is HP actress Bonnie Wright (Ginny) who is now 13 years of age.

Jamie's Edit: I'd also like to express my gratitude to Emerson "Carrot Cake" Spartz and wish him a very happy birthday!

Emerson's Edit: For clarification: he just made that nickname up.

January Contest Winners
We know many of you have been wondering what happened with the Alivan's contest winners, and we must admit, it's one of the things that disappeared due to the t-shirt problems (which we're resolving at the moment... orders coming soon!). Unfortunately, you aren't mistaken, there were no winners for December. There actually were winners, but they never responded to our messages, so we're getting two new winners for December's contest and will contact them accordingly. Also, today is February 15th, so two new winners will be selected this evening to win for this month. In the meantime, we must congratulate the two winners for January:

First off, is our broom winner, Lorenzo from Las Vegas, NV, USA. He is 12 and enjoys Harry Potter in both book and LEGO format. He chose the Scarlet Falcon broom from Alivan's. Our wand winner for January was Heather in Denver, CO, USA who chose the Holly/Ebony combination wand from Alivan's. Congratuations to them!

Don't forget, MuggleNet has a drawing every month for a broom and wand winner. You can enter by clicking the button right under the layout changer in the right column. If you don't want to wait to win or can't enter, you're always welcome to order from Alivan's... the best shop online for wands, brooms and other wizard-wares, and an official sponsor of MuggleNet.

UPDATE: For those of you who are confused about this, I've talked with Alivan's and you do not have to re-enter the contest every month. Your entry will roll over into the next month if you've already registered.

Fans serve up Valentine's Day present for Dan
Many of you will remember that one of Dan's New Year's resolutions was to learn to cook. The staff at DanRadcliffe.com and the fans on their forums worked hard to create a cookbook for Dan, which he received on Valentine's Day. He replied today with this message:

Dear Jenna, the Staff at Dan Radcliffe.com and all the Fans

Thank you soooooooooo much for the amazing recipe book to get me started. I have to admit my resolution hasn't gone well so far this year - far too much homework, revision, exams etc. However, now that I have this fabulous book I will make sure I try some of the recipes. I will probably start with one of my favourite dishes - Spaghetti Carbonara which was donated by Elena from Italy and Brittany from USA. I promise I will let you know how I progress. I am always overwhelmed by the time and effort that went into this book and particularly from Jenna who wrote them all out by hand - I'm speechless!! Thank you ...thank you.

Thompson on Trelawney
Emma Thompson talked briefly with Empire Online about her role as Trelawney in PoA:

"She was so much fun to play, I decided that, since she was someone who saw into the future, she had to be someone who couldn’t see anything at all in the present. Like where she was going, her clothing, anything. I decided to dress her slightly differently, and had wonderful co-operation from my director and designer and everything."

She also mentioned that, in April, she will start filming Nanny McPhee, the self-written adaptation of the children's "Nurse Matilda" series.

Thanks, Nick!

More Tintin rumors
Dark Horizons, Ain't it Cool and MovieHole have all posted updates to the Rupert Grint-for-Tintin rumors that have been flying around the net. DH's summary:

Moviehole reports that there are actually two “Tintin” films potentially in the works. Aside from Steven Spielberg’s planned project, last year's Oscar-winning director Roman Polanski is also purportedly interested in trying to bring the European adventurer to the big screen. Polanski is apparently eyeing the “Tintin in Tibet” comic to be used as the film's storyline.

Spielberg's version though is ahead and currently undergoing casting considerations. Two names being branded about are Rupert Grint ("Harry Potter") and Jamie Bell ("Billy Elliot"). Elliot is said to be a favourite choice of the director, but “since he only wants to do just one film, not two or more, Rupert Grint was then mentioned”.

Thanks to Colin and Brooke.

Strike could mean Italian PoA release date is not met
A strike by Italy's dubbers could jeopardize the day-and-date releases of big Hollywood pics including "Troy" and "The Day After Tomorrow" in May, and "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban" in early June. Just as actors in the U.S. are holding contract talks, the thesps who give English-speaking actors a voice in Italy are in the middle of a contract renewal dispute. They want a wage hike and are fighting what they call unreasonably short deadlines for delivering a dubbed pic:

"We want 20 days to work on a movie, not just five, as is the case now," said a spokesman for the union --- called AIDAC --- which started the all-out strike on Friday.

Let's hope things get sorted out quickly! (Thanks, TLC).

Andrew Wilson answers questions about Greek translation
We caught up with Andrew Wilson, who has just finished translating Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone into classic Greek, and asked him a few questions regarding his work:
Had you read the Harry Potter books before you applied to translate Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone?
No! I read the book chapter by chapter as I translated - I wanted to keep the freshness of discovery, thinking that if I was amused or excited by anything it would be more likely tio come across in the Greek - rather than if it was all a bit stale.

Translating and researching the book must have been a huge and momentous task. Were there any points at which you wished you hadn't taken it on?
Yes - when I was halfway through my allotted time and only about a quarter through the book!

How did you go about translating the book?
First I read as much as I could of original Greek that was relevant to the JKR style and subject matter - especially Lucian, who wrote in the 3rd cent AD (but in the style and vocab of 600 years earlier). His most famous work is "The True Story" which he says contains not a word of truth. It contains a trip to the moon, a visit to an island made of cheese, and being swallowed by a whale, on a forested island in whose stomach his hero lives for a considerable time (and much more). I worked either at home, or in a university library surrounded by dictionaries, grammar books, and the works of Lucian and other Greek authors.

Now that you've finished translating it, what will your thoughts be when you see the finished product on the shelves?
Relieved! It's taken a long time proof reading and getting the Greek on the jacket right - there are no ancient Greek typesetters! It will look like all the other HP books - apart from the Greek!

Thanks, Andrew! Further details of the translation will soon be available here. (page will be available in a few days)

WB approve 56 Krums
A total of 56 boys, divided into two different groups judged by their appearance, were approved by the judges at the Sofia casting for the part of Viktor Krum. The casting director, Bozhinov, explained that some of the kids strictly match "the dark hair, thick eyebrows and a slightly bent nose" look, while the other boys were more athletic build and robust. He also revealed that there were some Krum wannabes that didn't match the needed look but were "very cute guys".

When asked whether the Bulgarian boys stand a real chance of becoming a part of the next Harry Potter blockbuster, Bozhinov explained that his job was to find the most appropriate candidates, but producers in London are to decide. The London approved boys will be taken to England and the movie producers will decide who is the most suitable one. In Bozhinov's words they will judge upon the candidates' acting skills.

Tom Felton advises potential Cho Changs
Tom Felton has given out advice to the hopefuls who will be auditioning tomorrow at Pineapple Studios for the role of Cho Chang:

Tom, who plays Draco Malfoy, said it's good to make the casting people laugh, as it'll stick in their minds. "If you can make them remember you, then it helps," he said. "Obviously being a good actor helps too!"

Tom also added this on filming PoA:

"There's a new director (Alfonso Cuaron) and new cast members, which is always a good laugh because they always fit in perfectly," he said. "There's some location shooting in Scotland and new places I've never been to before so it's been a good laugh, an all-round good experience."

Emerson's Note: Jamie will be at the auditions tomorrow, so if you see him walking by, make sure you say hello!

Chamber of Secrets holding another secret?
After quite a few long (and excruciating) months, the sleuths at MuggleNet's New Clues Forums (official forums for the dicussion of Wizarding World Press's book New Clues to Harry Potter: Book Five) have made some headway on another one of the three subplots uncovered by Master Sleuths Galadriel Waters, Professor Astre Mithrandir, and E. L. Fossa.

It seems J.K.R. may have been hinting at something very secretively... possible new goings on in the Chamber of Secrets -- right under Hogwarts itself! See the sleuths' ingenious findings explained here... but don't forget, even with as much as they've found, there's still more wrapped up in this secret...

SUMMARY: Eric has written up a summary of this subplot, which has been approved by Galadriel Waters, for those of you would like (slightly) less reading.

Letter from JKR to adult fans
Thanks to HPANA for linking us to a letter from J.K. Rowling to Ali Wildgoose who, last year, organized a project involving older Harry Potter fans entitled The Letter Box. Its purpose was to show JK how many adult fans she had. She wrote back with this:

Dear International Association of Potter Fans,

I apologize most sincerely for the long wait for a response. You congratulated me on his birth - and no, he's not a Squib - but David is indeed the main reason that I am horrendously behind on my correspondence. Bulgarian boy cast as Krum unlikely to get hefty Hollywood pay
The Bulgarian boy who hopefully will be selected for the part of Victor Krum in the fourth Harry Potter film is not likely to get the hefty pay of a Hollywood star, Bulgarian Casting Director Victor Bozhinov said in an interview for Trud Daily.

The chance to star in the movie and become an international celebrity has gripped the nation's teenagers, but Bozhinov expressed serious doubts that the role could bring wealth as well as international popularity.

Carole Bouquet in GoF?
Rumor has it that French actress Carole Bouquet (filmography - pictures) has won a part in GoF, perhaps being cast as Madame Maxime or Fleur Delacour. Mike Newell apparently said this in french magazine Studio, but I'd take this with a grain of salt until we get official confirmation. (Thanks to TLC!)

Emerson's Note: Back in December, "Cinémascope", on the French TV station MCM, reported the same.

Update on Krum casting in Bulgaria
The casting for the role of Viktor Krum will take place at the "Studentski Dom" in Sofia on two successive days - February 4th and 5th, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Candidates must be between 15 and 19, which is a new requirement together with the need for fluent English, good health and a resemblance to Krum's description in the books.

If anyone auditions or manages to go to the auditions, send us any pictures you get and a report and we'll post it together with credit.

Mark my words, the first words out of those poor petrified people's mouths will be 'It was Hagrid.' Frankly, I'm astounded Professor McGonagall thinks all these security measures are necessary.
