Defective copies of book 5 turning up
This could be straight out of a horror story -- no ending?:

The last kid clad in scholar robes and round glasses was gone. The line of midnight book buyers had diminished. Candy and party favors were cleared from the Adventures for Kids bookstore floor when an employee slipped a copy of "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix" from a box. She took it home, skimming the end for a sneak peek on which character died. She thumbed the final chapters of the 870-page book. What she saw left her horrified. Page 850 did not move to 851. It reverted to page 819, 820, 821 -- all the way up to 850. Then, the book ended, with no ending at all.

The shop can account for 80 bad copies. Sixty are in the store. At least 20 are out there somewhere.

And then the copies that were printed upside-down:

"I opened it up and couldn't understand a word. Then I realised it was all upside down," she said. "I turned the book around and started reading from the back and it was great."
