Armour

There are many suits of armour at Hogwarts. They line the corridors – presumably to add to the atmosphere of the place – but serve no particular useful purpose. Ghouls are known to inhabit them occasionally, and they presumably have to be kept clean by Argus Filch and/or the army of house-elves that work in the school.

In Harry’s early days at the school, he found the layout rather confusing – something not helped by the constantly-moving staircases and doors which only open if you ask them nicely. He was convinced at this time that the suits of armour could actually walk around, although whether they really can or not is unconfirmed.

They certainly have some sense of perception and ability of movement, however. It is said more than once that they creak when they move, and one even looked round and laughed at Neville when he put his foot in a trick stair at an awkward moment once. They don’t seem to have any particular loyalty to the teaching hierarchy either – Harry hid behind a suit of armour when he was trying to break into Professor Umbridge’s office and it did nothing to give him away.

Exactly what suits of armour are capable of doing and thinking will have to remain unclear for now – but we certainly do know that just like a lot of things at Hogwarts, they have something of a life of their own.
