Dormitories

The only dormitory we have any information about is the Gryffindor one that Harry shares with Ron, Neville, Dean and Seamus. Harry (as far as we are made aware) hasn’t even been in a dormitory for the boys from any other years, and certainly hasn’t been in any of the girls rooms (due to the sliding staircase effect that Ron found out about to his cost).

Harry’s dormitory is a round room at the top of a spiral staircase in Gryffindor Tower. It contains five four-poster beds arranged around the walls, with enough room for all the personal possessions of the students to be stored around them.

At first sight it appears that there must be a number of these dormitories for each year, as JK herself said that there were around 1000 students at Hogwarts. This equates to about 150 per year, which in turn leads to just under 20 of each sex per house. This should mean that there are at least four other boys dormitories like Harry’s for his year.

Having said this, other considerations suggest JK may have over-estimated the size of the student population. If there are 35-40 pupils per year per house, this is rather a large class size, as they attend classes in house groups. At least some, if not all, subjects are taken with another house, making a class of up to 80 pupils, which is far too large.

In addition to this, it seems odd that no other boys from Harry’s year have ever been mentioned: Harry, Ron, Neville, Dean and Seamus are the only ones. There could be other un-mentioned pupils of course, but it seems strange that Harry should never have any interaction with any of them. If there really were only 5 pupils of each sex per year (and hence only 1 dormitory) this would take the class sizes more manageable: 10 for a single-house class, 20 for a double. This would be realistic if all subjects are taught to houses in pairs.

This seems the most likely option, meaning that there really is only one dormitory per sex per year, and putting the pupil population closer to the 300 mark. The staffing levels are more appropriate to this number of students as well, and so this is our official conclusion!
