The Forbidden Forest

The Forbidden Forest is a vast wooded area which lies to the East of Hogwarts castle. Hagrid’s hut lies close to its edges, and he is known to venture into it from time to time. But with that aside, people rarely venture in. The students are simply banned from going in there, and with very good reason: it’s exceptionally dangerous.

The trees grow very thick and close in the forest. Their roots always seem to be grabbing at your feet, trying to trip you up, and when you are any distance into the woods, they seem to block out the light. There are wide paths to follow, but you’d be well advised to stay on them: the vegetation on either side is incredibly dense and if you leave the path you might just not ever find it again.

In addition to all this, dangerous creatures infest the place, most of whom have little or no respect for humans. If you ended up meeting any of these you could just as easily end up dead rather than simply lost. All of the following are known to live there (more details about each of these beasts can be found in the Monster Book of Monsters section):

Centaurs
Unicorns
A 3-Headed Dog (Fluffy)
Acromantulas
Thestrals
A Giant (Grawp)

Out of any of these, only a Unicorn is likely to ask any questions at all before eating you.

Despite all this, Harry has ventured into the forest on several occasions, and although he’s had a number of very close shaves, he has survived. Along with Hermione, Draco and Neville, Harry was even forced to enter the place at night as part of a detention, where he found a slaughtered Unicorn and none other than Lord Voldemort himself. As punishments go, it makes lines seem rather inadequate.

He has also gone into the forest of his own accord on a number of other occasions:

He went in with Ron to speak with Aragog,
He went in with Krum when following Bartemius Crouch,
He went to see Grawp with Hagrid and Hermione,
He went in with Hermione, Ron, Luna, Ginny and Neville to get Thestrals and used them to fly to the Ministry of Magic.
He flew in on his broomstick and landed in a tree to listen to Snape talking to Quirrell.

Each time he has some out alive, but in some cases, only just.

Think my name's funny, do you? No need to ask who you are. My father told me all the Weasleys have red hair, freckles and more children than they can afford.
