Hogwarts Express

The Hogwarts Express is the official school train of Hogwarts. It is a bright red steam engine with a sign saying “Hogwarts Express” on the front, pulling a long line of carriages – plenty for the “ordinaries” and a couple of posh ones at the front for the Prefects. It carries pupils from Platform 9¾ at King’s Cross Station, London, to Hogsmeade station, situated somewhere in the north of Scotland. It has never been mentioned by JK if the train makes any other stops on the way to Hogsmeade station, so we can presume that it is a direct journey. However, it is left for us to wonder how students from other parts of the UK (such as Wales etc....) manage to make the journey down to London each year (and sometimes at least twice a year). Of course it is not impossible for pupils to make it to London in time for September 1st, although it is certainly an inconvenience, especially if you happen to live in Aberdeen, which is a lot closer to Hogwarts than London is.

The Express leaves Platform 9¾ on September 1st each year at approximately 11am. Students who fail to board the train by this time will have to make their own alternate travel arrangements to school (as Harry and Ron did in their second year at school, although their chosen means of transport didn’t meet with universal approval by the teachers). It is considered appropriate by Professor McGonagall to send an Owl to the school explaining your difficulty rather than using a flying car if you do happen to miss your ride.

The train arrives into Hogsmeade station sometime during the early evening. This is thought to be around 5/6pm by Potter’s Prophecy, due to the fact that the first feast of term (after the Sorting Ceremony has taken place) would probably not be held later than around 7 or 8pm.

The train makes several journey’s between Platform 9¾ and Hogsmeade Station each year. There is the initial journey for the start of term, whilst some pupils return home for both the Christmas and Easter holidays and require transport back to school. The train also makes the requisite return journeys at the end of each term, of course.

There is no need to say anymore, Miss Granger. Tell me, which of you will be dying this year?
