Quidditch - House Teams

The number one wizarding sport is of course Quidditch and this is no exception at Hogwarts. Students who are chosen as a part of their house team have a large responsibility to help the team win over the other three Houses, eventually accumulating enough points to go on and win the Quidditch Cup.

There are necessarily changes in each House team almost every year as the players move through the school system and eventually leave. Therefore one of the first tasks of the school year for the current Quidditch captains are the new player trials that are held in the first month of term. These allow the team for the year to be chosen, leaving enough time to train the new player(s) with the other team members and also to set and practice tactics etc... Students who wish to become a member of their house Quidditch team have to apply via Madam Hooch (the school Flying teacher) and their respective Quidditch house captain. In Harry’s case, however, he was asked to join when his natural ability on a broom was noted by Professor McGonagall.

The school Quidditch season begins in October and continues through until late in May, consisting of six games in all (so that every House plays once against every other one) . Matches are attended by a large proportion of the school, including those from all Houses and not just those taking part. The supporters sit in large stands which are situated around the four sides of the Quidditch pitch.

Once a game of Quidditch has started, it can take any length of time to complete, with some games being known to have lasted several days. What would happen at Hogwarts if this was the case is not known, as the games featured so far have all ended in a reasonable length of time. Once the teams are out on the pitch and the whistle goes, the word of the team captains becomes law. The Captain is responsible for their team’s failure or success on the field, they lead the tactics and co-ordinate formations during play, and it is they who will carry the can if their team loses.

Gryffindor Quidditch Team

Gryffindor team robes are scarlet and gold. They are traditionally regarded as a good Quidditch house, although the days of their greatest glories may have passed with the 1970s team of James Potter and the 1980s team of Charlie Weasley. After this time, the title of Hogwarts’ greatest team passed to Slytherin who dominated the Quidditch Cup until the mid-1990s. Gryffindor were still their closest rivals, and the Gryffindor vs Slytherin matches were always closely fought, but for many years it was always Slytherin who came out on top.

Gryffindor finally won the Cup back in the 1993/1994 season after nearly a decade of Slytherin domination (although nobody won it in 1992/1993 as no Cup was awarded in that year). The Triwizard Tournament of 1994/1995 one again caused Quidditch to be cancelled, but on its return the following season, Gryffindor triumphed again.

When Harry began to play for the house team in 1991, during his first year at the school, he was the youngest player to play in a House team in more than 100 years. He also had to be given special dispensation to have his own broomstick at school (a privilege normally reserved for second-years and above).

Known players:

Oliver Wood – Keeper (and Team Captain) (1991-1993)
Ron Weasley – Keeper (1995-1996)
Fred Weasley – Beater (1991-1995)
George Weasley – Beater (1991-1995)
Andrew Kirke – Beater (1995-1996)
Jack Sloper – Beater (1995-1996)
Angelina Johnson – Chaser (1991-1996) (Team Captain 1995-1996)
Katie Bell – Chaser (1991-1996)
Alicia Spinnet – Chaser (1991-1996)
James Potter – Chaser (1970s)
Harry Potter – Seeker (1991-1995)
Ginny Weasley – Seeker (1995-1996)
Charlie Weasley – Seeker (1980s)

Slytherin Quidditch Team

Slytherin Quidditch team robes are dark green and silver in colour. Slytherin and Gryffindor are fierce rivals, and are usually the two teams in main contention for the Quidditch House Cup. Both teams have a strong Quidditch history, though Slytherin prefer to play a physical game, which verges on dirty especially when they’re up against Gryffindor. Their run of Quidditch Cup victories ended in the 1992/1993 season, since when Gryffindor have won twice and once the competition was cancelled.

Known players:

Miles Bletchley – Keeper (1991)
Bole – Beater (1991-1993)
Derrick – Beater (1991-1993)
Vincent Crabbe – Beater (1995-1996)
Gregory Goyle – Beater (1995-1996)
Marcus Flint – Chaser (and Team Captain) (1991-1993)
Montague - Chaser (1991-1996) (Team Captain 1995-1996)
Adrian Pucey – Chaser (1991)
C Warrington - Chaser (1992-1993)
Terence Higgs – Seeker (1991-1992)
Draco Malfoy – Seeker (1992-1996)

Hufflepuff Quidditch Team

The Hufflepuff team robes are yellow and gold in colour. Hufflepuff’s only prominent player of recent times was Cedric Diggory in the 1993 season. He was captain of the team at this time and managed to beat Gryffindor in one match (a feat which his father was immensely proud of).

Known Players:

Zacharias Smith - Chaser
Summerby – Seeker
Cedric Diggory- Seeker (and Team Captain 1993-1994)

Ravenclaw Quidditch Team

Not many details have been given about the Ravenclaw Quidditch team. As far as Harry was concerned, the most interesting thing about them was that Cho Chang played Seeker for them, which made his stomach go a bit wobbly before the game in the 1993/1994 season.

Known Players:

Roger Davis – Chaser (and Team Captain)
Cho Chang – Seeker (1992-1996)
