Library The library of Hogwarts is located on the fourth floor of the castle, and the head librarian is a stern, angular woman named Irma Pince. Not your usual librarian type, she has instead cast herself as the jealous custodian of her treasured books, doing her best to protect them from the grubby little fingers of any pupils who might want to read them at all times. If you happen to be a Hogwarts pupil who has any kind of query about the books or their contents, then the best advice is to forget it. The books themselves are charmed to prevent them being defaced, but should any student succeed in overcoming these spells and disfigure a book in any way (and it should be remembered that Hermione actually managed to tear a page on Basilisks out of one once) the wrath of Madam Pince was sure to be unending. The library itself contains thousands upon thousands of books, all relating to magical spells, wizards and wizarding phenomena. It is reasonable to assume that the library contains a section for each of the Hogwarts subjects. What is known for sure is that there is a Restricted Section, which is home to the darkest and most powerful tomes. The only way to get a book from this section is to have in your possession a signed note of approval from a teacher. Hermione chose the easy route of getting a signature from Professor Lockhart when she wanted to procure Most Potente Potions in order to concoct a Polyjuice Potion. One can only assume that Professor Snape, for example, would not have been so obliging, or indeed gullible. The library closes each night at 8pm.
