Background

Students have been assigned to a particular house only if this has been explicitly stated in one of the books, or confirmed by JK herself. It has been assumed that, given the catchment area of Howarts and the fact that no other wizarding schools have been mentioned, it is the only school of wizardry in Britain. It therefore serves England, Wales and Scotland, but not Ireland.

Any wizards or witches who can reasonably be assumed to come from any qualifying country, and who were born since Hogwarts was founded around 1000 years ago, are treated as potential students. It is recognised that fewer people entered full-time education in the distant past, and so anyone from this time period is listed only as “Possible”. Those whose education details are unknown but come from more recent times are listed as “Probable”.

All Death Eaters are assumed to have been in Slytherin.

Where first names of adult characters are not known, they are replaced with a title (eg Mr, Mrs, Professor, etc). Any unknown parts of the names of children/students are marked “???”. Hogwarts staff members are included (even if they did not attend Hogwarts as a pupil) and are marked “(Staff)” to identify them.
