AIM Buddy Icons Help

For the most part, installing AIM Buddy Icons is a straightforward process; but enough problems have arisen that construction of a brief 'Help' section seemed appropriate. This page provides an overview of ways to solve common problems associated with AIM Buddy Icons.

Notice - Some of the AIM icons are "too big." You may find an error message upon clicking some of the icons that reads,

"The image you have selected is too big.
The maximum size allowed is 7168 bytes."

You will not be able to use these icons. I'm trying to weed these icons out, but it's possible that some might go undetected. If you receive that message, please send an email to messengerstuff at staff dot mugglenet dot com reporting which icon isn't working. Thank you.

AIM Triton -

For a while, a lot of people were having issues with AIM Triton rejecting buddy icons. The most common errors said something to the extent of, "You have clicked an AIM hyperlink that your client does not support." There are a couple ways to deal with this problem:

  1. Download the new Beta version of AIM Triton. This new version supports the use of custom buddy icons and can be found on this site. Note: You'll have to log in and read the license agreement.
  2. Use the older and better (in my opinion) version of AIM; 5.9. This version also supports AIM buddy icons found on MuggleNet and does not take up as much of your computer's memory. You can download it here.

AOL -

When you are using the AOL messaging service (not AIM, but the service that comes with the AOL software) and you click on a Buddy Icon two different issues may arise:

  1. You get a message that says something to the extent of, "The page cannot be displayed."
  2. Nothing happens.

To have an AIM Buddy Icon display with AOL Messenger, follow this procedure:

  1. Download and install either the new Beta Version of AIM Triton or AIM 5.9.
  2. Log into AIM using your AOL username and password.
  3. Select a Buddy Icon by clicking on it. A message should pop-up and say, "Are you sure that you wish to change your personal Buddy Icon for (your screen name)?"
  4. Click "OK" and an AIM Preferences section will come up displaying your icon.

At this point, you can either keep using AIM (it has most of the same features as AOL's messaging program) or close AIM, and use AOL; the Buddy Icon you set in AIM should be displaying there too.

Manual Installation of Buddy Icons -

If you're running a version of AIM that supports custom Buddy Icons (like Triton or 5.9) but clicking on the icons does not bring up a window asking if you want to change your icon, you can install it manually.

For PC users:

  1. Save the image: Right click the icon, select "Save Picture As" and chose a location on your computer to save it.
  2. If you're running AIM 5.9, go to the menu at the top of your buddy list, select "My AIM" then "Preferences" (or you can hit the "F3" key). With the new Triton Beta, go to "Edit" then "Settings" (or you can hit the "F7" key).
  3. This should bring you to a "Preferences" or "Settings" menu. Select "Expressions" from the list on the left.
  4. Select "Browse PC" or "Browse" and select the image you saved in step one.

For Mac OS X Users:

  1. Click the Buddy Icon and hold while pressing the control key, select "Save Image" or "Download Image to Disk" and save it to your desktop.
  2. In the top menu of AIM, choose "My Account Settings."
  3. Click the "Buddy Icons" tab, and hit the "Open Icons Folder" button.
  4. Drag the Buddy Icon from the desktop into the "AIM Buddy Icons" folder.
  5. Select the icon from the pull down menu and click "OK."

For Mac OS 9 Users:

  1. Click the Buddy Icon and hold while pressing the control key, select "Save Image" or "Download Image to Disk" and save it to your desktop.
  2. In the top menu of AIM, choose "Edit" then "Preferences."
  3. Select "Buddy Icons" in the Category window, and then choose "Reveal Icons Folder."
  4. Drag the Buddy Icon from the desktop into the "AIM Buddy Icons" folder, and then close it.
  5. Close "AIM preferences" by clicking "OK." Reopen them and the new icon should appear in the "My Buddy Icon" pull down menu.

If you have a question relating to a problem with MuggleNet's AIM Buddy Icons that is not outlined here; you can send an email to messengerstuff at staff dot mugglenet dot com.
